For the first time in history, a transgendered politician has been honored as a senior technical advisor for the Department of Commerce. Amanda Simpson now joins the ranks of the few transgender presidential appointees to the federal government in our nation's history.
Amanda, an aerospace and defense veteran, released a statement to the National Center for Transgender Equality saying:
"I'm truly honored to have received this appointment and am eager and excited about this opportunity that is before me. And at the same time, as one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others."
Congrats Amanda and nice work, Obama.

Great Job, Obama… instead of legalizing gay marriage, just start appointing gay people to your staff. Sounds real effective. If Obama really cared about gays, he'd legalize gay marriage instead of placating gays with some administrative positions. For the record, I don't believe that people should be hired just because of their sexual orientation, creed, race, whatever… but if the person is right for the job, they should not be discriminated against.

I'm sure that its appointment had more to do with its capabilities than whether or not it had surgery in a futile attempt to change its gender, Perez. And if it wants to delude itself that its appointment is going to make a huge difference for others of its kind, it needs a reality check, but its delusion is harmless.

This is such an awesome move. Its about time us trans girls got some love. I'm sure her being the most qualified was simply icing on the cake so to speak. I want to see blessings of consciousness rain down on all this year. Hopefully Obama's examples of change will squash out ignorance, and light the path towards consciousness and enlightment.

You know, I honestly think people need to stop focusing on sexual orientation and get to the heart of the matter.. "are they right for the job?". I don't mind what someone does on their own time, it's none of my business… I think focusing on these things actually takes a step backwards. Do you think Amanda Simpson wants everyone to talk about the fact that she is transgenered? Or do you think, just maybe, she is the right person for the job, and her personal life and choices had nothing to do with it?

Lets stop picking people based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. and start picking them based on their qualifications! And lets start with the Presidency!

Thank you for pointing out the importance of state leadership! Our democracy is based on a collection of states that agree to accept our Constitution, and States are legal bodies unto themselves. Most people think that the US Houses of Congress are our only Representatives worth paying attention to, but the States have the power to make and break laws… no matter WHAT the federal govt. wants them to do! States now have very little power because citizens ignore their importance.
When citizens fail to support and communicate with their state leaders, they lose their voice… which leads to Congress getting most of our power, leading to bureaucratic and economic disasters (like what's going on today)… Bring back states rights– by supporting them and letting them know what you want to be legal and illegal in your state! If you want gay marriage to be legalized, your state representatives are the ones to make that happen. If you don't want your state to accept Bailouts, Real ID, or public healthcare– or if you do– START SUPPORTING YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES and they can help make your home reflect your beliefs!!!
Let's not remember Amanda for her sexual orientation, but how she is fit for the job. I'm sure that she wants to be taken seriously and not remembered as the one person who got appointed just because of her sexual orientation. And if we do remember this, then all people– black, white, gay, purple with spots, whatever– can be elected to public office because of their merits, not because of their lifestyle or demographic… which will allow those who are different than the mainstream become everyday citizens (thus eliminating discrimination and applying the all citizens are equal idea)

Team Pyrex statements like that make it seem like the LBGT community has some master plan to which we all agree and want implemented. Don't pretend to speak for all of us, ever.
One issue that goes along with the post is how much of a role transgendered persons should take in the equality debates. Some will not go forward without everyone, L,B,G and T included in the language of a bill for say, employment non-discrimination. Others say if the inclusion of the transgendered precludes passage of a bill than lets forget them and for the better good, take what equal rights we can get.
We are a diverse lot, and in my case would rather these issues not be brought up here, on a gossip site, but in a forum designed to address these issues in the manner they should be.

They don't wish ANYONE to be trans-gendered and had to find themselves throughout their lives. They go through so much pain as children (internal) that they wouldn't want others to go through the same thing.
