Congress Approved This? "Negro" On 2010 Census Form
We can't imagine President Obama being too happy about this!
On the 2010 Census form there is an option under the "Race" category that reads, "Black, African Am., or Negro."
WHAT THE EFF?!
Apparently part of the excuse is that some of the older African Americans in the country still refer to themselves as "Negro," but we find that pretty hard to believe.
Especially when they interviewed an older black male in the clip above who doesn't agree with the term being on the form at all!
Crazy!

i've heard many people refer to themselves as "negro" and it's only okay if they use the term themselves. o_O what's the big deal…
OMG! Do they have Beaner? because I like beans! I will have to check that ! ha ha ha …blah
first
that office is majority of democrats
oh boy…incomperamouses
who cares, there are bigger issues like HEALTHCARE!
At least it didn't say "Colored"!
LOL…..it's for the people in the south.
"Negro" is the word "black" in Spanish, as you know. Maybe it's supposed to be for Spanish-speaking personas. Still insensitive, though.
lol, it's for the people in the south
W0W!
Hello - United Negro College Fund!!! Must not be that much off a slur!
Umm I haven't heard the word "Negro" since I watched old episodes of the TV show Good Times. Smh..seriously wtf? Congress is trippin!
The word "negro" and its variations is found in many languages around the world, and means "black." There are people who are black that are not "African Americans." These people may identify as "negro" if they come from many places, like Spain or Brazil, for example.
I'm not saying it's right. Seems an unnecessary distinction to me.
Most are not literate enough to understand correct terminology and definitions (Caucasian, Africans, Oceanian, etc.). Though I doubt many would return the census after reading the Race section, why care? Black, white, purple, green, orange, yellow, pink, red, blue… whatever… we are all a shade of gray in the end. Oversensitive… Sensationalism…
What, no "colored" choice?
African American sounds retarded if your not originally from Africa.
I would be really up in arms about this if there wasn't a negro college fund and advancement of COLORED people, what would have happned had they put colored on it. LOL
Yes and the old black man they interviewed speaks for all the old black men in the country.
I was a little upset by it too. But supposedly it was respectful back in the day. I really don't know why they need to include it though. It just seems unnecessary.
I'm Brasilian, and in brasil anybody from african decent calls them selves negros. Its not at all an insult and by calling yourself that it shows how much pride you have in your heritage.
Stop being so fucking sensitive. Jesus Christ.
RIDICULOUS!
Is there a box to check if you're a homo?
Negro is Spanish for "black". It's probably on there because everyone in this country is expected to know or speak Spanish now - ridiculous!
The last person I heard use the word "Negro" was Archie Bunker.
There really is only once race, the human race, but anthropologists define three, Caucasian, Negroid and Mongoloid (Asian). I really don't know why people get their panties into such a wad over the word "Negro". It is the anthropological definition of a human race. I did the Census 10 years ago and was told that if people wanted to name their "race" as "Hispanic" or "Mexican" (I live in South Texas) that we had to put that down, even though that is an ethnicity not a race. Hispanics would be either Negro or Caucasian in race. Basically, you can tell a Census taker that you are a Martian and they have to put that down! It really is time to get over the word "Negro" though. It is not a bad word, just a scientific one.
Please, why say Obama wouldnt be happy, he is half white!!! This shit is so stupid. African American cracks me up too, you were born here, your an American! My grandmother came from Poland to Ellis Island and I dont refer to myself as a Polish American, all of our families came from somewhere, Shit is rediculous.
Once Again, WHO CARES!!!
-
Negro (or, properly: Negroid) is a scientific term, akin to "caucasian."
-
get over it.
-
So…the opinion of one man represents the whole nation? You have an interesting way to look at things Perez…
republicans believe there are still a lot of negroes in the south
Re: Texas Mom – "Hispanics would be either Negro or Caucasian in race."
WRONG. Hispanics would be either Negro or Caucasians or Mongoloids (Asians) who migrated from Russia to North America when Alaska was connected what is now Russia and spread down the Americas. But Hispanics can also be a mixture of both Negroid and Caucasians AKA Mulattos OR Caucasians and Mongoloids (Asians) AKA Mestizos, Negroid and Mongoloids, and/or ALL 3.
I find the whole thing insane. Why the eff would someone call themselves African American? Does a black guy from the UK call themselves a African Englishman? All life came from Africa, science has already proved that man came from this continent first. Wouldn't that make ME African American no matter what race I am? If I'm white, you're black…..simple as that. If you live in America legally, then you're simply an American. Perhaps if you were born in Africa that would be a different story.
i think you got the N word confused PEREZ!!!
As you know (or should since supposedly you speak Spanish) it is a perfectly acceptable word in Spanish denoting the color black or a person's race.
whatever. Jeez does EVERYTHING have to be so PC now a days? The United Negro College fund is still happening. The media does everything in their power to stir up controversy when there is none. So sick of it.
c'mon now.
United Black College Fund? Nope never heard of it. United African American College Fund?? Never heard of that one ether. What is the name of it?? It's right on the tip of my tongue…just seen a commercial for it…OH YEAH!!! THE UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND!!!
Wow Perez…good thinking insinuating the IRS is racist. Have fun getting audited!
The term Negro is the right term.
Whiney bitches. Its impossible to be PC about everything. People need to stop taking themselves so seriously and give everyone the benefit of doubt geez!
Doesn't "Negro" mean "Black" in some languages?
it's for the hispanics who don't speak english - just kidding. Actually they said it'll make white people feel better since many aren't happy Obama won
Re: SWEETPIECE! – It's "rediculous" that you can't spell properly.
Um HELLO???? Negroid is part of the classification. It was shortened to Negro…but I am black, African American or Negro. I'm not offended. Usually it's the white people stirring up the controversy shut up and focus on HEALTH CARE.
This ties into all the problems in defining race. In Sociology, race is a social concept, a structure that our society develops to categorize and ultimately discriminate. For the US, being a "melting pot" we don't do a very good job.
Re: azulle – Re: mjfoxfan – It's not for Spanish people
Negro please!
It's one of several options on that form all referring to the same racial group. Perhaps it was put there for people who don't like calling themselves "African American". Who knows. I don't see the point in making a big deal out of it.
Re: bashinista – The word negro refers to the "color" black. That word therefore doesn't even begin to describe 99% of the African Diaspora. Most of us are not "black," we're brown. The word negro predates contact with Africans. When contact was established the word "negro" was unfortunately used to describe these people and it has stuck ever since. Hence the word Negro was prescribed to Africans and has always had a negative connotation as it denotes physical differences and promotes separation.
Mario,
As always you are grasping at straws and going into a subject you know little about
Re: HeartsContent – You've got to be kidding me! You know as well as I do that the term negro in South America is about as positive as the term "colored" in the united States. Brazilians are notoriously color obsessed and there is unfortunately a long history of discrimination and prejudice against darker skin in Latin America. Look at what Sammy Sosa, who is from the Dominican Republic, did to his skin! Give me a break.
get over ittt.
Re: Texas Mom – It's not a bad word but it's a bad term to apply to people! We're not talking about Negroid are we? No, we're talking about Negro which is totally different. Mongoloid isn't on the census, so obviously the government isn't interested in science!
You should get your facts straight!! What century are you living in? Where r u from the boondocks; some back water country? They shouldn't let just anyone post comments on these websites.
Speaking as one of those "negros", no we do not like to be called that nor do we refer to each other as such!! You should go back to school boo boo that's why we adopted the word "black" to get away from using that and other derogatory words. While we may have preferred that to others at one point.. it is not the term of choice now!! Wow!!
No, they just said Negro!!
What's wrong with just using African American/Black?????
Well the people of the South need to join this Century!!
We ain't slaves no more people!! Come on!! This is so sick!!
Stick to gossip, putz. This is a non-issue.
Actually our ancestors were from Africa hence the term 'African' and American like Latin American, etc. It's a racial and cultural terminalogy.
It's also, unfortunately, used in America as a way to distinguish one group of people from another thereby strengthen the segregation already in place in this Country and encouraging as well as promoting discrimination!!
same shit new decade
Having been involved in some social research, I was surprised to find out that many older blacks not only strongly preferred the term "Negro", they took great offense at being referred to as "African"… which they saw as a demeaning term akin to "savage". So while the younger generation may feel oppositely, I can definitely see why this change were made.
This is a dumb conversation. Im black and I dont find the word negro offensive because its the same damn thing as saying Im black. If I was to classify by color, I would say Im brown…. but god forbid they allow me to call myself that — all the guidos and non-whites of the world would be up in arms to be in the same brown boat as my negro self. Whatever folks, skin color is so topical literally and doesn't mean a damn thing.
Why does the federal government even need to ask this question on the census? They're supposed to COUNT people and that's it. Have you seen the other questions we're supposedly required by law to answer? Unreal…
lol funny!!!
Re: Jacobs Mom – mh no, but they have white trash i bet you like that one more!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmm, Congress consists of mostly Democrats. You know, the people you support, Perez. Oh the irony in this post.
The census bureau knew what they were doing. They could've chosen the easy route, and just keep it as Black and African American, that way you didn't offend anybody. But, no, they decide to add a term that could easily piss folks off (which it has). It is now 2010, not 1959. People no better, and they'll still do stupid shit, then play dumb. Yes, United Negro College Fund & NAACP use the dated term, but it was created in a certain time period, and it's also a historical foundation. The first language of the country ain't Spanish, so don't give that bullshit excuse either. I've never in my life called myself 'negro,' so because of that, why should I be ok with this. People are always insensitive when it's not dealing with something close to home. But, let this have been something against women (all hell raises), let this have been something homophobic (all hell raises), but the minute it's black folks ('oh here they go again overreacting, like they do about everything'). People are the biggest hypocrites.
Uhm, I hear it often by older african americans. And you think you are an expert because 1 guy disagreed with it?? You are such an idiot.
I prefer to be called Native American as opposed to American Indian…also, you may call me "The one who had family here way before the white men came, took away our heritage, stole our language, and raped our land" Yeah but they don't have enough room for that.
negro anglo whatever
Now they should put "Cracker" on there to balance things out
Yeah the UNCF or the United Negro College Fund hasn't used "Negro" for 66 years. I guess thats OK though.
I see they finally deleted "spear chucker."
They should use "jigaboo".
lol what it doesnt offend me its just fuckin stupid i have never been called a fuckin negro and i never even heard an old black person say it they should jus have black or african american why did they have to add negro this isnt 1960's the word is just completly uneccessary
and for people who keep talkin about the united negro foundation maybe you idiots didnt realize when the hell that shit was made,no one says negro anymore in reality it really sounds like some country ass BAMA shit
Re: Real American – why cant you white people ever produce a joke that is somewhat funny
corny motherfuckers = /
Negro is Black in Spanish and is not a rude or offensive word for us at all! is just a color name. So I think the document was made for Hispanic people too. So relax and stop making a big deal, I think now more then ever racism is over…..Obama, your president is black! Un presidente Negro. Viva la tolerancia!!!
Re: natbugsmomma – Yeah but your jewish so you dont count.
the shit was there last year and years b4 that its fucked up…why don't they put cracker or redneck for trailer trash…WTF so tired of the excuses..
I think they should just change all the names of the races. Cracker, Porch Monkey, Wetback, Zipperhead, Towelhead, Guido etc. That way they can offend everyone equally and there would be no uproar that the poor black man is being "disrespected".
If "Yo" momma or "Yo" Daddy ain't from A-Freak-a and the other breeder that spawned "yo" ain't from America then "yo" ain't "African-American". You are black or - as per the socially accepted term - Negro. (By acceptable, I mean, check with the United NEGRO College fund). Only America is so embarrassed by our slave-owning past that we invent terms to cover it up. When was the last time you heard of a "African-Canadian"? "African-Mexican" or "African-Brit"? Stop trying to act like you are from A-freak-a. You are American with black skin. Big freakin deal!!
Good God! We gave yo ex-slave, cotton pickers, jungle bunnies 40 acres and a mule - who cares what we call you - according to the Constitution you only count as 3/8th of a human being. Don't you think you have bigger battles to fight than if you are called "negro" or some other made-up arbitrary word that tries to not offend you by actually saying you are not white? Hello!!!!!?????? You have bigger fish to fry.
I can't believe people are all getting their panties all in a bunch for one word "NEgro". Geez get a freaking life…then again if you had one you wouldn't be worried about some stupid word. Come on people there are bigger problems in America today to worry about than some word.
I am from Latin America, where some have tried to introduce the African-whatever politically correct idiocy. The response has been unanimous: "Tu eres negro, no hay problema, aparte de Hugo Chavez."
The term is twice retarded: not just the "African" reference (come on, we're in the 21st century and a black guy is president), but also the "American" part (Mexico, Canada and Brazil are all American, but not part of the ___ing USA).
I just cant believe that! If it was in France, those who passed that "negro" in the census would be sued for discrimination and insult… Land of freedom?
Did you read the words in front of Negro? It says Black, African American and then Negro. If people of African decent would just pick something and stick with it there would n't be a problem. It seems each one of you want to be called something different. What would you have the government do? Any reason to bitch and you people are there. I'm so sick of it!!!!!!! I'm not bitching because it says WHITE!!!!! I could complain and say I'm beige but then I'd be just like you black people bitching about NOTHING!!!!!
there is nothing wrong with the word negro or negroid. it is a perfectly good and proper word to refer to one of the three major world races. its better than black. how many people do you see walking around that are actually black. ive only seen a handful of negros that i could honestly say had black skin. most have a brown or golden brown skin.
OMG!!! I am so sick of this shit!! Get over it you got your United Negro College Fund and numerous organizations. Today, there are 106 historically black colleges and universities in the United States. In some cases if you live close enough to the Mexican border you cannot get a job unless you are bilingual. It's a word people only a word that is truly derived from a scientific definition. It could be worse it could have be the other N word or perhaps coon. Then you would have a reason to bitch and I would agree. America has far bigger issues to deal with than that word. I agree that maybe it shouldn't be on the form but get over it. If people would put as much effort into making the states a better place and less time crying over shit like this america might actually be a wonderful place instead of the cesspool it is turning into.
Negro is the correct anthropological term, as is caucasion to refer to "white" people. African American is just some politically correct term they came up with that doesn't have any bearing on a person's race. And frankly, if you were born here you are an American of whatever ethnicity. This is just more crap meant to divide rather than unite.
Perez, you are an ignoramus. Negro is not a pejortive term especially in the contxt of a census form. Granted if some red-neck KKK member was stringing up some black dude or burning a cross on his front lawn, then HIS use of the term probably would be pejorative. Nevertheless, you're still an ignoramus. In America, it would be much more accurate to describe most black folks as mixed race. I recall reading, on average, most have about 20% white, or indigenous DNA. Personally I think the term African-American is as good as any I've heard, though it is probably as accurate as coloured or black. I think however, that convoluting the language like a pretzel to manufacture the latest euphemism is as fatuaous and pleurile a practice that really should be reserved for dizzy teenagers. Today's acceptable euphemism is tomorrow's cringe factor. The key is to not be a racist arsehole, or in your case Perez, a priggish, hypocritical, name calling prat. Proclaiming yourself the Chicken Little of racial abuse just exposes what a complete halfwit you are. On the other hand, ranting at you is somewhat cathartic.
Umm, negro is the spanish word for black. It's not that complicated. Why get offended?
