New Jersey Senate Rejects Gay Marriage Bill

On a 20-14 vote, the New Jersey Senate rejected a same-sex marriage bill on Thursday. The announcement was made after hours of emotional public debate and protest rallies.
Residents of the state are divided over the issue as many feel that because they legalized civil unions in 2006, same-sex marriage is not necessary. Although civil partners are consistently denied pension benefits and hospitals continued to deny visits to partners.

Gays are not barred from marriage, they are barred from pretending they are married when in a same sex relationship. If they want to be treated as equals then they are just as free to follow the rule hetero's do and can marry members of the opposite sex for those benefits.

My issue with this vote is I think the wrong people voted, I think it should be left up to the people to vote how they feel about this issue. It should be on the ballot during the next election.

Government shouldn't be involved in marriage at all. That means the state shouldn't be recognizing any marriages at all and that means heteorsexual marriage. Marriage should be private; a private ceremony between two people with no recognition by the state.

I'm against marriage period whether it be gay or hetero, but if gays want to marry more power to them. It's obvious that no law will be passed anytime soon. I assume gays vote as well so you are also responsible for electing these politicians that don't listen to what you want. In the meantime, why don't couples just get a Power of Attorney??? Yes you'll have some legal fees to pay to file the paperwork but in the end it means you can see your significant other in the hospital and have the right to manage their affairs etc.

That is true the hospital situation is ridiculous. If that happens, you just have to complain hard enough and you will get through. I work at a hospital and we allow significant others in. As far as pensions and stuff, well I believe the reason why there are pensions is for special cases. Most people don't get pensions. Why should we make exceptions for gays. Then do we have to allow children, relatives, best friends, or even pets. The reason why opposite sex marriages get special treatment in some cases is that it should be the most promoted. It allows for procreation. It is best for children to have a male figure and female figure in a family. Plus, it challenges us to work together as males and females in a society of decisiveness. In a heterosexual marriage, there is a lot of things that are difficult just because of the difference between a man and a woman that is not present in a gay union. So lets uplift heterosexual marriage but still encourage the gay community to not feel rejected.
I am a christian. I do believe God loves everybody. I think it is cruel to deny people of these rights I really do. I really hadn't cared much before but when it comes down to the health of your significant other and denying them benefits. It is not fair. We are all entitled to our opinion and they are entitled to their right love who they choose.

Oh i am sorry…i didn't realize hetero sexuals married to get legal benefits even when they don't have any sexual affection towards each other.
the primary reason for marriage is about companionship…there are some legal benefits that the married couple are allowed to benefit from BUT if you ask the majority of the public what marriage means I strongly doubt many will simple blurt out what you have just identified as the "primary" reason for marrige.
Mario is on the right path, he's not championing marriage as a ways to "cheat" a system..he's championing the rights for an individual to make a committment to his/her life partner WHOMEVER it may be and from WHEREVER they may be. Heteros can fall inlove with a foreigner and marry them and build a life together should that be their choice…a homosexual can fall inlove with that foreigner but will not be able to marry when the foreigner has over extended their welcome to the country they must leave and the relatinship will be broken not by choice but by other powers and their desire to build a life together is terminated. There is no arguing that simple fact of disequality.
