A Worthwhile Cause

"Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.

Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation—and as a culturally diverse, free society. Now, with over one thousand World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out."

I just have to say that this is such a great program. My grandfather recently participated in an Honor Flight, and he said it made him feel so appreciated and valued. I think it's easy for us to forget about WWII veterans now with the current war on our minds, but they're the reason why we still have the opportunity to fight for our freedom, whether we agree with the circumstances or not. He said it was one of the best experiences of his life, so give if you can, and if you can't, keep these men and women in your thoughts, and if you're so inclined, your prayers.

We registered my grandfather, a WWII vet, for this and he was able to get on a trip last May. I live in the area and surprised him at the WWII Memorial. We toured it together and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life. These veterans are phenomenal and to hear them speak about their experience is surreal. Many were dressed in uniform or wore their dog tags or hats. The tour leaders were amazing and so knowledgable. Many of the vets cried and I certainly did when I saw them, listened to them, and saw the many tourists shake their hands, take pictures with them, hug them and thank them. This is an amazing organization and amazing group of people benefiting from their work.

Honor Flight operates out of my city as well, and it clearly means SO much to the veterans. Nicely done, Perez, on sharing this one, and agreed, lemier-it's purely about doing something special for the veterans who have never asked for anything in return. My Grandpa was a WWII vet as well, and I love that because of men and women like him, we CAN speak freely, and agree to disagree with one another without fear.

I have never posted before, just read and enjoyed. I felt compelled this time to do so. As a veteran of our Armed Forces (Navy/Marines) I am stunned that there are only 3 comments posted about this and 71 comments posted about a song. Not to take anything away from the artist.. BUT. This is an amazing program. Thank you for posting this on your blog. The more people informed the more Vet's we can assist! Yes friends Freedom Isn't Free and I was honored to wear the uniform of Both Divisions of the Armed Forces as a Female Corpsman.

Re: lemier – What is the website to locate this information? My father is a WWII Vet and still alive. Would love for him to go.

In answer to your question, the website is honorflight.org. It is a non profit and is in 35 states and 90 cities (and counting) You need to print off an application for your veteran and get them to fill it out and send it in. It is first come first served.
Thank you so much for posting this and helping get the word out so that all the Veterans can get a chance to go. God Bless America!

This is a wonderful program! As a Patriot Guard Rider, we have done escort missions of WWII vets going to see the WWII museum in DC a few times! God bless them for what they do to honor our heroes!

They just don't make them like these men anymore. Salutes.
