Conan Might Stay On Air, If He Decides To

Looks like there might be a slight chance Conan O'Brien will stay on the air.

After reports surfaced that Jay Leno would be returning to his 11:30pm time slot, rumors began circulating that it marked the end for O'Brien.

But now according to new reports, the decision to stay on air will be Conan's.

NBC is giving Conan the option to choose if he'd like to take the midnight time slot, moving his show from 12:00am to 1:00am. That would then cause Leno's show to run just 30 minutes.

But if Conan decides not to move his time spot, they'll give Leno the full hour and Conan gets the boot.

Conan, who was given no advanced warning this would be happening, has reportedly not decided what he'll do yet, but we hope there's a big salary bump if he moves times. Doubt it though.

So just reprinting another press release?

  2. 2

So which one will be hosting the Tonight Show???

  3. 3

in this picture don't they both look like overgrown boys? Btw Conan is awesome and Jay Leno isn't funny. At all

  4. 4

Nobodoy wants Leno anymore…thats why his show sucks, no one watches it. They better keep Conan or i'm not watching anymore of their shows!

  5. 5

    Conans sooo much better!!

  6. 6

Jay Leno ruins everything… My grandmother won't even watch his show… my GRANDMOTHER!!!!!!

  7. 7

sorry, this doesn't make any sense. If Jay's show returned to 11:30 and then why wouldn't Conan's just return to it's original time slot? I don't understand the "Jay doing a 30-minute show" thing. Why would he? Why would that effect Conan? Please clarify, this post seems to have a lot of sketchy info.

  8. 8

Jay Leno is a fat douche bag. Give Conan his chance.

  9. 9

both of their shows are awful.

  10. 10

WTF?? A half hour Leno show?? What is that…that doesn't leave time for anything. Maybe a 3 minute monologue, one guest and the rest is commercials. That is stupid. Jay should leave the whole effed up NBC mess and go where he is appreciated.

I find this whole situation totally unfortunate. Conan is a brilliant comic and an extremely hard worker who turned Late Night into a real franchise. He deserves The Tonight Show, he earned that slot, and quite frankly, I find him funnier than Jay. With that being said, New York was a better fit for Conan - he's not fit for LA because he's simply too smart. And the fact that Jay stuck around on NBC is questionable. Jay likes to play the innocent guy who stepped aside for Conan, but I find his move to remain on NBC undermining to Conan's chances at success. Clearly, I want Conan back in New York, where he belongs, and I think he should bring the Tonight Show with him.

Fox is probably calling him right now!

This is a victory for network original programming (now lets pare down the number of network reality shows….2 each during the original programing season), I originally supported the idea because I thought about TV's past with various variety/talk shows going back to the dawn of the medium. But the reality was not good.
I hope Jay takes the 1/2 hour deal and Conan stays on the built his earlier in the night (morning) brand. It seems like the best solution for all.

  14. 14

    Leno sucks.

  15. 15

NBC had not given Conan a real chance with the Tonight Show bc they didnt really let Jay go. Conan is a better host and they need to give him a real shot at the show, not change his time for Jay.

  16. 16

Conan in NYC doing the Tonight Show. Yes. Maybe Leno should continue in the 10pm slot, just not 5 days per week. Some of their dramas are 10pm shows, and should not be shown earlier.

  17. 17

I hope leno is not coming back. he's just not FUNNY !

  18. 18

where does all of this leave jimmy fallon?

  19. 19

Jay sucks NBC should fire his dumb ass….

  20. 20

FUCK LENO! CONAN ALL THE WAY!

  21. 21

Leno Sucks!!!!!! Conan Sucks!!!! The only person getting the shaft is Jimmy Fallon.

  22. 22

this is NBC's ridiculous way of voiding their contract with Conan. the agreement is that he has the Tonight Show, or they have to pay him 45 million. by putting the decision in his hand to accept or decline the shift in times, they won't have to pay him if he declines and leaves. downright manipulative…

  23. 23

Screw NBC! Conan deserves better, he should move to a competing network and stick it to NBC. Jay Leno isn't even funny.

  24. 24

    Team Conando!

Since Law & Order has only one season left to break a record (with basement ratings), NBC could rebuild its schedule by taking back Law & Order Criminal Intent from USA (they air the reruns in summer anyway). Jeff Goldblum has done great work on the show. (as there is no courtroom component to the show anymore that would open up a spot for a legal drama like the successful Good Wife on CBS and the new legal drama starting on ABC). Part 1

    27

    Part II
White Collar is new enough on USA that they could rebroadcast the season over the summer and take season 2 onto the network. I think the other USA shows are too identified with the network to "steal".
I don't think either Stargate Universe or Santuary (or even Caprica) could be "borrowed from SYFI (plus ABC has seen mixed to failing results with V and Flashpoint).
I would be curious to see how Top Chef would do with a network time slot (but Queer Eye was a miserable failure when they tried this).
No matter what they have a massive rebuilding project ahead that may take years to see returns.
One problem is that despite getting 3 more episodes Trauma is as good as cancelled as is Mercy by the end of the season.
Parks & Recreation ,Community, and Heroes are all considered possible for cancellation (I am almost alone in liking Parks and Recreation) and hate community so I fear both are doomed. Heros has seen its viewership go from 13, 11, 7, to now only 5-6 million viewers. It may be given a 5th season to wrap things up. I am not confident about Chuck.
That leaves only 3 current NBC shows (non-reality) left and guaranteed renewal, 30 Rock, The Office, and L&O SVU which it creeping back up in the ratings and should do better with a return to Tuesday at 10pm.
    Proud as a Peacock, indeed.

  28. 28

Way to act like a complete A hole, Jay. JUST RETIRE ALREADY and quit ruining everything. Can someone please explain NBCs hard on for Jay? he's not even funny!

  29. 29

They should just return everything to the way it was. Forget a 1/2 hour. Conan did well later on…

  30. 30

Over the past couple of weeks I've been comparing the guests that appear on Leno, Letterman, and Conan show. Basically Letterman is getting all the better guests, than Leno, and finally Conan gets the crappy ones like cast mates from the Jersey Shore. NBC is basically catering to Leno and can't freaking see that is screwing up the rest of the schedule. If you give all the big time stars to Leno's show–which no one is really watching cause they'd rather watch something better, than Conan has no chance of standing up against Letterman. Sorry NBC giving Leno and Conan a different time slot will not change anything.

  31. 31

Both shows suck. I'll keep watching Letterman - he should have gotten the Tonight Show after Johnny (Leno is a backstabbing hypocrite).

  32. 32

i got this from an inside source….

Conan is going to 12.. Leno 11:30. Heard it here first.

  33. 33

Okay so now we figured out the cause of 2012.. the world will end if NBC is dumb enough to kick Conan (the funniest man in history) off.
Soooo its your choice, NBC.. end the world in 2012 or save humanity.

  34. 34

Conan's humor is informed by a silly intellect that the majority of dumb Americans who watch talk shows at 11:30pm just don't get. It's above their unintellectual and vapid heads. So, it's a not a surprise that he's not doing well in this time slot that appeals mostly to sheeps and drones that watch for a stupid laugh before getting up for their boring-ass jobs. Conan is too good for all of you!

  35. 35

NBC needs to just admit that their little experiment failed, and then get rid of Leno - he was supposed to retire origianlly, wasn't he? Putting him on at a later time and then having Conan on after that just adds insult to injury and will culminate with viewer drop-off. Why can't they just cut their losses and move on?

  36. 36

Neither one of them is funny or attractive. No wonder they are having viewer trouble.

  37. 37

    Wasn't Leno "retiring?" WTF?

  38. 38

i already told everyone put jay leno to his old time slot move connan back to his old time slot move jimmy into carsons time slot and get rid of that fucker since no one has watched carson since he left trl and besides look at the guy fuck he has aged faster than dick clark!!! dick looks better than carson stupid as ass he had the pick of hollywoods litter and he ends up knocking some slut he probably had a one night stand with dumb fuck….trust me the rating will come back but connan should get to keep his money for the contract he originally had also move him back to new york he was way funnier out there than in shallow la where the audiences are to stupid to understand his jokes…and this whole mess could have been averted had jay not decided he was going to retire then changed his mind dumb ass…but then jimmy would not have gotten his shot at the late night big league and he is actually really really funny….

  39. 39

ive been to both live shows back in their old time slots…i waited 3 hours for stand by tickets to see conan in january!! i froze my ass off from 6 to 9 when they give out all the stand by tickets…but u know what when all the people got the stand by tickets where told to show up at 4pm we where treated like vip…we got seated first and at the front of the audience…connan was so awesome he came out and shook our hands…and who would have thought this guy is super tall super pale and super skinny…oh and we all got t-shirts when we left….we got crappy seats for leno and no special treatment not even a nbc cup or key chain…had to buy my tonight show shot glass from the the souvenir cart outside the studio…the reason why nbc wants to keep leno is cause there are still old-timers who watch leno not because they love him but but they also remind him of the old johnny carson and nbc wants to keep that audience…besides most of the college kids will be out in the clubs and coming home to the middle of connan and the end of jimmy…they just need to put everything back to like i said in my last post

  40. 40

…..one last thing about leno it does kinda makes u wonder if in the late shift (the movie) he was actually given an accurate portrayal of his sneeky ways…just with how like everyone else here has said leno and nbc never really gave conan a clean shot…but i honestly think he really wanted to retire but then he got sick of having to be in the same house with his wife 24/7 so he changed his mind its not like he really needs the money he has said that he has never touched his tonight show money the only money he spends is from his stand up shows he has scheduled every weekend…..so whats really going on here ???

  41. 41

I don't know what's the big deal. There's nothing wrong with his show. I think it's better than Jay's bullshit.
