Late Night Wars: Did Conan Mess Up?

It seems that way — at least a little bit when it comes to the contract.

Conan O'Brien's reps apparently never asked for a guaranteed time period for The Tonight Show giving NBC the freedom to run the show whenever they choose.

As for Jay Leno, his deal notes the 10:00 PM time period specifically, which means a new deal must be negotiated before he moves back to the 11:35 PM time slot.

What NBC did guarantee for Conan is that he would be the host of The Tonight Show, but as we know Conan is not to keen on being pushed back. Now he is arguing that the time slot for The Tonight Show is implied based on its long-running history.

Supposedly Conan and his team met with NBC yesterday to negotiate a settlement and an out for Conan. Some NBC execs are even blaming the red-haired host saying that he didn't take notes from the big bosses, simply replying with, "I do what I do."

Sounds like it wasn't the best of working relationships, so maybe Conan will be better off without NBC?

    Team Conan!!!

  2. 2

Buddy's Done! He might as well beg to go back to writing for the Simpsons. He was never funny doing stand up. No great loss for NBC.

  3. 3

They're trying to screw him on a technicality. Why they are bending over for fat obnoxious Jay Leno is a mystery. Conan should go to Fox where he will be free to do his own kind of humor. NBC sucks.

  4. 4

he's screwed. i understand it would be easy to assume The Tonight Show would always be at 11:30pm like it has for like 50 years. but to not get that in the contract was a horrible oversight by his lawyers.

sucks he's got to be punished for NBC fucking up. When Leno took over The Tonight Show his numbers weren't that great at first either, but NBC gave him the time needed to establish his own fan base. NBC should not be throwing Conan under the bus just b/c their programmers are idiots.

Well, really the guy has been working for you for 15 years. You know what he does. You can not make him be someone else. You can take as many notes as you want!

  6. 6

It wouldn't be Conan, it would be Conan's lawyers that messed up not putting in a time with the contract.
Leno is a scumbag, NBC will regret not keeping Conan.

I don't feel sorry for O'Brien at all.
His ratings were in the dumps. Whose fault is that?
    The writing's on the wall.
This hot-shot from Harvard apparently didn't pay close enough attention to his contract. Oops.

I like Conan. I find him *gasp* intelligent. I find what he said to be spot on. Not surprising that you, Perez, have no fucking clue.

  9. 9

haha I am shocked that NBC didn't cut parts of his show last night. He was trash talking NBC the whole night! The best part of the show was the segment about NBC being a pimp, and all their late night hosts were hoes. NBC just doesn't wanna lose any of their hoes to other pimp!

  10. 10

Doesn't matter where Conan goes. Not funny either way

Hey Perez..unfortunately, your translation service with Google does a really bad job of "translating" your website. It translates the English into a pidgin German….lots of the stuff doesn't make sense at all. I think that it is really cool to offer the service, but it doesn't really work….thought you would want to know. Maybe the Google translation service works better with some other foreign language, but not with German!

Keith Olbermann said on his show yesterday that he had a meeting with the top executive on the 52nd floor(NBC,who he works for)
I think he was telling us in his sly way, that he was going to be sitting at Conans desk very shortly

Re: caroaber – So Leno's poor ratings had nothing to do with leading Conan? Laughable…..
I also know Leno wasn't wowing the world with his ratings when he first came on the scene. Took the interview with Hugh for him to finally beat Dave in the ratings. Leno also had ER, and all those detective lead in that helped him too.
Leno and NBC looks like idiots….thats the writing on the wall.

NBC will suck no matter what… Conan staying, leaving - it really doesn't matter. Because both of those options will not get them their ratings back. The only thing I like on the entire network is 30 Rock.

Re: Yellow Peeps – TEAM CONAN!!!

Re: Yellow Peeps – You know who's not funny? YOU'RE NOT FUNNY! I can tell from your avatar you're a dork! So if you're going to insult our red headed stepchild, then be prepared for the backlash! If you had a funny avatar that said something relevant, but you don't, so you're not, so I'm considering the source. You seem like one of those unfunny Leno lovers.

  17. 17

    Team Conan!!!!!!

i don't care you don't pull that kind of stuff and think there are going to go for it!and then in public! thats so low even for NBC! NO KIND OF RESPECT THERE!NBC YOUR CRED IS WORTH CRAP.

  19. 19

nbc has conan on the ropes unless the court will find that the time was an implied term because of his 'non compete' clause, he won't be able to go work anywhere else and will be forced to continue at midnight.

  20. 20

PREZ CAN YOU NOT HEAR THE WHIRR OF NBC SPIN DOCS FROM YOUR CONDO OR TABLE AT COFFEE HOUSE ON SUNSET ??? The guy got screwed. They did not promote him they diluted his audience with talk show lead in and he is right the time for the tonight show has not changed since its inception in 1951. Sorry I think the time is implied after 59 years !! Jay's an ass and regardless of how Conan preformed in that position NBC really set him up to fail.

  21. 21

You can't blame Conan for that! The Tonight Show has been in the SAME TIME SLOT for like 60 years! Why in the hell would he think he would have to guarantee his time? NBC f'ed this situation up royally. They should have just cut Jay off if his show wasn't working. Now they look like back stabbing assholes for how they "forced" Conan to choose…its obvious how they really feel about Conan. Team Conan all the way!

  22. 22

So basically Leno learned from experience to state all the details in a contract and Conan didn't thats sucky man, but to be fair not the first time Leno has been in NBC dramas.

  23. 23

Team Conan Absolutely!!!!!! They should be a shame of what they doing to Conan, not fair!!! Leno says he retired and what he did was make another show !! And because is not going good now he wants to go back !! WTF!!!!
