Rosie Weighs In On Jay And Conan - And It's Hefty!

Rosie O'Donnell believes that Jay Leno should step down from NBC and let Conan O'Brien carry on with The Tonight Show saying:
"If you're privileged enough to drive the bus, you should say, 'Thank you' and drive it to the best of your ability, and when it's time for them to hire a new driver, you should say 'Thank you for allowing me to drive this as long as I did' and pass the keys to the new guy with red hair, and not try to flatten his tires before he even gets going."

Rosie also revealed that when Jay started on The Tonight Show back in the early '90s she was offered by NBC exec Brandon Tartikoff to sub in for Leno on Friday nights like Joan Rivers did for Johnny Carson.
But Leno put the kibosh on that deal because he didn't want to take any days off, infuriating Rosie and rightly so!
Sounds like Jay has been pretty selfish for most of his career — which is probably why nobody in the industry seems to care for him much!

Ugh, ok, do people remember 7 months ago when everyone felt bad for Jay and everyone felt like Conan was taking away something that was rightfully Jay's? Like it or not, Jay Leno had high ratings, he was the most watched night time host. So, if Conan didn't deliver on that, and Jay still could, then NBC has every right to decide who gets to be the host.
So you were promised the tonight show, Conan? BIG DEAL. Get over it and move on, clearly it wasn't working out in the first place.

So we should all thank Leno for not making us deal with her on Fridays. Rosie is all drama obviously. …who remember the view? Besides I don't think Jay wanted to give up the tonight show and Im sure there is another story here that we aren't hearing because it does seem like he should step down, but maybe its not him being selfish. Hard to say networks never let us know the whole truth.
Conan gave NBC an ultimatum years ago to get the Tonight Show. He wanted a date when he would take over. Jay was forced out then. Poetic justice loser Conan being forced out now. Dude couldn't beat Letterman repeats before Jay was even on the air.
She's a fucking loser; a total zero in Hollywood. No one cares what she thinks. Jay had higher ratings than letterman when he was at the 11:35 time slot. NBC might have fucked up, but everyone is going against jay cause he has the golden ticket.

Rosie is obviously just bitter from her entanglement with the Tonight show. This is not a Jay vs Conan issue and those of you who are making it that way are uniformed idiots. This is a BUSINESS decision made by NBC. They're sole purpose it to make money and the situation was not working, so they're going back to what made them money for 15 years. And to all the Conan fans, who apparently haven't been watching his show for the last 7 months…if Conan had been bringing in the ratings, this would NOT be happening!!! It's just as much Conan's fault as anyone else's…

Rosie used to be one of my favorites. Now she just talks when she should shut up. Jay didn't want to give up the Tonight Show in the first place, and was forced to say he would give it to Conan five years ago. Conan is the selfish one making demands that he would be given the Tonight Show or leave NBC. So, NBC forced Jay to say okay, it's yours in five years.
Well, Conan stinks! Just the facts, ma'me. He thinks he's funny when he's not at all funny. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno was doing pretty good until Jay had to give it to Conan. And Jay did it gracefully. You didn't hear any moaning from him….okay a few jokes, but he didn't slam Conan like Conan is doing to Jay.
Bring back Jay - at least HE'S funny. Conan….take a hike.

Totally agreed. Leno is a saboteur. It was rude to put him in before Conan to begin with and then he really showed that he has zero class by taking the show back. Beyond low. I won't be watching the Tonight Show after CoCo's gone. It's just not right.

First of all, who cares what Rosie thinks? She overreacts to just about everything and is not exactly known for being objective.
The NBC idiots who thought this up should be fired. If I, as a viewer, thought screwing around with a successful late night show (Jay's) was lunacy, then how come the suits at NBC didn't understand that? And then to make things worse, slot him (or anyone else) in during prime time, 5 nights a week, in a format that hasn't worked in TV for decades at that time, should have put the lunatics out of a job.
It is no wonder both Leno and Conan failed, given the circumstances. Neither one pulled in the viewers. Actually, I don't understand why NBC wants either one of them anymore. They are OK as comedians and talk hosts, but neither one is all that great. I think NBC should have cut both loose and started from scratch. They might if Leno fails to deliver now that he has the Late Show back. I would love to have been able to hear what Johnny Carson, Jack Paar and Steve Allen thought about all this.

What it all boils down to in the end is what NBC wants. It really doesn't matter what we think is fair or right and I don't think anyone is truly 'fighting'. I personally feel bad for them both. I think they both got shafted through the years.
Rosie would have gotten herself fired from the tonight show in pretty short order. I don't think the producers would have cared for her insensitivity to her guests and badmouthing them to their faces.
They probably thank Jay in retrospect.

After so many years at NBC, Jay has earned the right to do whatever he wants in late night television, and that includes kicking out newbie Conan… NBC execs made a mistake by hiring him, but that has now be corrected.
Jay just isn't funny. He never has been. Conan IS funny. Surely another network will snatch him up. Jay laughs at himself constantly. ANNOYING!

Re: Hate Low Class People – I have to agree here - Rosie lost her relevance the minute she decided she was bigger than her act. The danger of celebrity in the wrong hands. A wise man once said, "The minute you think you have nothing but sunshine coming out of your ass, all you REALLY have is an illuminated landing."
As for Jay, I think his act and material were better suited to The Tonight Show. I love Conan too, but he doesn't seem to care about his guests - it's the "Conan and Andy Show" with THEIR banter, leaving the poor guests to try to figure out what they're doing there. Anyone catch the looks on Rob Lowe's face the other night?
Jay's show never caught on because it deviated from the Tonight Show formula that people associated with him AND there was some decent competition from the other networks. The Tonight Show never worked with Conan because he was being asked to be Jay and Johnny - and wouldn't continue the prior working formulas. He will be a much better fit on FOX — and now we will REALLY have a late night ratings war! Definitely compelling entertainment for the viewer!
