Dreamworks' MLK Biopic Back On

Even though children from the King family threatened to sue Dreamworks last year, the Steven Spielberg-produced biopic of Martin Luther King Jr. is really happening!

The studio has hired the Oscar-award winning screenwriter of The Pianist, Ronald Harwood, to pen the feature film and Harwood is remaining mum over the details of the script.

"I will not say anything about my approach to this screenplay except to say what I always say: 'I will do my utmost to be true to truth,'" Harwood stated on Tuesday.

Dr. King's daughter Bernice and son Martin Luther King III strongly opposed the production of the film last May due to "many issues pertaining to the estate" of MLK, but Dreamworks says they have now been "authorized by the King estate to utilize the intellectual property of Dr. King to create the definitive portrait of his life."

Who would U like to see star as Dr. King in the film?

    Derek Luke would be perfect.

  2. 2

I do not want it — but they will cast Will Smith.

  3. 3

    absolutely

    Who will be the actor?

  5. 5

Eddie Murphy in a fat suit.

  6. 6

    Forest Whitaker or Denzel Washington

  7. 7

    Ving Rhames.

  8. 8

    It should be Denzel.

If they white wash his contacts with Communist Russia, his affairs and heavy reliance on Jewish organizers to produce marches, then I'd like to see dead Morgan Freeman get a shot at it.

  10. 10

    Chiwetel Ejiofor should play him

  11. 11

Denzel or Will Smith for sure

  12. 12

what about Sean Patrick Thomas…he's a great actor and not so super huge that his star will overshadow the role.

  13. 13

    Bernie Mac

  14. 14

MLK's children changing their minds and allowing this movie means they're getting paid, sad but true.
Oh and for MLK role, I vote LUCACRIS! And they can end it with a showstopping version of PANTS ON THE GROUND

  15. 15

    A plumped up Jamie Foxx?

  16. 16

Corey Feldman, "The Situation", Jason Priestley, Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. or Don Cheadle should audition for the role. Tough Choices!

Re: sunnysideup22125 – in black face-

  18. 18

Nelsan Ellis from True Blood should try out for the part.

  19. 19

Denzel is a better actor than Will Smith in my opinion…

MLK was already made into a REALLY amazing miniseries back in the late 70s called "King." my dad and i watched it on MLK day two years ago and it was INCREDIBLE! Paul Winfield did such a great character study that when he read King's famous speeches you'd swear it was the man itself.

so unless they can top "King", which i doubt, i won't be watching the movie and will stick with the amazing miniseries.

  21. 21

    Ving Rhames…excellent choice!!!

  22. 22

Re: widownixon – ????….he is black…black face won't be necessary.

  23. 23

I think Terrence Howard or Cuba Gooding Jr. would be good, Cuba is ripe for a comeback and he actually has the same look as MLK. I think though Terrence Howard has an awesome presence on screen and could do MLK justice as well. I DO NOT want to see Will Smith or Denzel Washington, they have both had their share of biopics already and I don't believe that they could be seamless enough. Just my opinion.

  24. 24

Will they show all of his "girlfriends"????? Just curious. Or the way all of his children are fighting over his money and legacy without never working themselves!

  25. 25

you know.. something extremely rascist could be said about MLK's kids. But i'll keep my mouth shut considering i think everyone is reading my mind anyways. Anything for a dollar and a place in the media, right kids?

  26. 26

Isn't it amazing that the children of MLK are more keen as to what kind of money they'll get rather than seeing their fathers message taken to a new generation?

What a couple of dirtbags! They may have the name, but that's about it! I wonder if MLK and his late wife are rolling in their graves?

  27. 27

Bernie Mac? You asswhole. Is that suppose to be a joke?

  28. 28

Brian J. White would be perfect. He even looks like MLK.

  31. 31

    Two words: Morgan. Freeman.
    … 1,2,3… GO!

  32. 32

I will not go see it because to be honest I have always thought this guys death was for nothing. He faught for the rights of African Americans and what did they do? 80 % of them decided to pop baby after baby out and live off welfare because they think America owes them something. They created that horrible rap crap telling kids that drugs, guns, violence and sex is cool and the slang and pants falling off your butt….Like I said this man died for nothing , all the black people did was destory this mans dream for there race

  33. 33

Will Smith, he would have to gain a bit of weight but that is who I would want to see play the part.

  34. 34

and who the fuck is worthy of playing MLK? No one, really.

  35. 35

they should get an unknown actor or it will just be 'will smith as mlk' or 'denzel washington as mlk' when people should be watching the film and almost believing its really him

  36. 36

Why do you have a watermark on the that picture Perez? were you walking in front taking it?

  37. 37

Re: XxTequilaSunrisexX – You should drink a tall glass of SHUT THE FUCK UP

  38. 38

Re: XxTequilaSunrisexX – lol 80% wow what an idiot i would respond back with another extremly over the top racist comment about stupid ass white people like you but i think your comment shows just how dumb, ignorant and delusional you are

    thanks for doing my job

  39. 39

Denzel duh, is there any other choice?
