WTF?

The National Socialist Movement Denver Unit adopted a mile stretch of pavement along the highway to maintain. A spokesman for the group says, "We're not bad people."

Uhh, what government official allowed something so inappropriate? Maybe they really needed those highways cleaned up no matter who they offend!

      This is allowed because a) this is the United States of America and these individuals have the right to do this whether we like their message or not and b) because there is already a US Supreme Court ruling on the Neo Nazi's side (Yarnell v. Cuffley) when they refused to hear a state's appeal of the KKK adopting a stretch of highway.

      It is hypocritical to be advocating the rights of gays (for which I am one) with the NO H8 stuff and at the same time be decrying this group their freedom of speech regardless of its acceptability to us.

      While states are required to do this, they also fight back in their own ways like naming those stretches of highways after people of the group the hate group dislikes. So that section of highway might suddenly be named after a Jewish person in the near future.

      I live in Colorado and don't have a problem with it. At least they are cleaning the highway. It isn't as if people agree with their ideology, but making a big deal out of it just gives them the publicity they want.

      It's true. We do Live In the United Sates of America and these Neo Nazi's have just as much right as anyone else to adopt a highway. I don't think that is the issue here. The issue is that it is now 2010 where groups like this should no longer exist and placing their name on a highway is throwing it in the faces of our ansestors and everything they have worked for to make American the most accepting country of all races and walks of life. We are very lucky to be American and have a the freedom of speach, but just because we have it doesn't mean we should abuse it. I have the right to say whatever I feel but that doesn't mean I should. Hopefully we all value are right for freedom of speach with out forgetting the morals are parents have taught us. Promoting gay rights is promoting freedom for all walks of life to get the same treatment as anyone else. To promote Neo Nazism is to promote freedom for one race. One race being surpior to all others. They have the right to adopt a highway but personally I will never accept their belief that there is one superior race.

      They are citizens and pay taxes just like we do. As long as they aren't breaking the law, the Nazis can adopt highways, have parades, and do whatever any other citizen can legally do.

      In America, we believe in freedom of speech and expression. It is unconstitutional to deny any legal citizen any rights unless they break the law (or go into an airport, but I digress)… and political groups (even hate groups) like the Nazis are made up of legal citizens. While many of us disagree with what they believe, as Americans, it's our place to let them live and participate in society with us. To do otherwise would be to limit freedom… which none of us wants to happen, including you, Perez.

      It is called freedom of speech. They are allowed to exsist in this country because we have fought for EVERYONE to have the ability to express their own views.       The government official had to approve this group to adopt the highway because if he/she didn't they would have gotten a class action lawsuit for denying freedom of speech, lost their job and been unable to work in the same field in the future. It sucks that hate groups are out there, but they have rights to their opinions even if their opinions are of hatred.

      it's called the law, people. the government can't discriminate against a group because people might (and in this case do) disagree with their ideology. as long as they are not breaking a law (and highway cleanup is a good deed no matter who is doing it) the government has no choice but to allow them to do it. this is what freedom is. our constitution and subsequent laws protect everyone. as much as this group makes most of us angry, the fact that they were able to adopt that stretch of highway should be a comfort to us all because the constitution is being upheld in an objective way. if you're really upset and you really want to make a difference, put your energy toward creating your own group, comprised of people who oppose hate in all forms, who are dedicated to replacing fear and ignorance with love and respect. don't complain when the government does the right thing. do you really think the underpaid public servant who signed off on this was excited to do so?

      Re: RandolPants – regardless of what you think about their views, are they not human? are they not american? what exactly is it that makes them "not like everyone else?" you don't have to agree with what they believe in, but to say that they shouldn't be allowed to adopt-a-highway (which is a good thing to do for the community) is the same as saying a LGBT group can't adopt-a-highway because not everyone agrees that that's a proper way to live.
