Susan Boyle was the receiving end of some serious fighting words from musical theater star and British songstress Elaine Paige, with whom she was reportedly thrilled to perform a duet in December.
While attending South Bank Awards, Paige lost her lid over Boyle's success.
"It's all about turning someone into an immediate celebrity at the expense of longevity and working hard and experience. Susan Boyle is doing terribly well considering she literally came to the attention of the world overnight with the advent of YouTube."

She was commenting on how long SuBo will last without experience I think you'll find. Sure she was inspirational but SuBo will never be as good as Elaine Paige and she wont last as long. The Youtube society means that as something new comes along, we forget about the old unless they have something new to offer us. That's the way it is and Elaine has a very valid point with that.
Silly Perez..you seem to think higher record sales equate to superior talent. Did you ever stop to think that maybe Elaine has a point? These reality shows just make anyone an instant celebrity…look at Heidi Montag or Sookie, for instance. The point is, no one would have bought Susan Boyle album if it was put out without all the fanfare that preceded it. Jealous? I doubt it…Elaine has a had a successful recording and stage career in the UK, despite the fact that some people on here have never heard of her. She's also well known for her outspokenness, so a comment like this is nothing new.

i had no idea who elaine paige was until susan gave her a "shout out" before her infamous performance, stating that elaine was an inspiration to her. though i don't care for either girl's style of music i do think it was a bit catty for elaine to say that…jealousy is a bitch.

The ONLY reason that SuBo has made it as big as she has is because she was previously a very homely, unkept woman with a really great voice. THAT IS IT. The combination of both goes against all that we know when it comes to celebrity (just think back to Simon Cowell's face with the raised eyebrows as she sang her first note). THAT sums it up. Sad but that's how the ball bounces in this world. There are 1000's maybe millions of people that can sing as well as she does, but SHE had the gimmick. I'm actually quite sick of hearing about her and she definitely is somewhat 'touched". All you need to do is watch her in an interview. Something is missing.

MOST PEOPLE HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD of Elaine Paige until Susan Boyle mentioned her name on that show! And even then, the audience rolled their eyes and giggled. I saw the duet , by the way, and Elaine Paige, for however successful she may or may not have been in the past, was terrible. Susan Boyle was great. Since Susan's success was sudden, she will learn as she goes along.

You have to remember that a musical star like Elaine Paige was a total package. She looked good, could act and sing. Susan Boyle has a beautiful voice - no question - but to achieve the longevity in a singing career she needs to lose about 50 pounds and then work on her other skills. No impossible but rather improbable. I'd welcome it, but I can't see it happening. As for those readers who needed Susan Boyle to introduce them to Elaine Paige, i can only imagine you must be have lived your life on the far side of the moon, or to be more charitable, you may be under six years old, in which I commend you for being able to type.
As talented as Paige is, she's a jealous jerk. There are tons of people in show business who made it because of nepotism…simply being born into a name…why isn't she blasting them? Kate Hudson, Gwenyth Paltrow, Liza Minelli, Jennifer Anniston, Anderson Cooper, Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Sigourney Weaver…the list goes on and on. Doesn't mean they're not talented, but they all had connections and most didn't have to struggle as hard as un-connected people. That's LIFE - happens in every business. Susan Boyle struck a chord with the public and deserves to be where she is.
She's got a point. People like Subo, Gaga, Kesha and all the other flavors of the moment won't be around in 20 years. Elaine Paige has been revered by her, admittedly stodgy, fan base for decades. Still, what a cruel thing to say publicly about a woman known to have some emotional issues. Hope Subo can shake it off.
While I seriously doubt that Susan is going to "fight" her over this, it does sound as if someone is a might jealous. Regardless of HOW she became famous, if you don't have talent to back it up, you won't stay that way. Susan is immensely talented and is really trying to stay as normal as she can with this insanity surrounding her. I do think she will be bummed that her fave singer has such mean things to say about her though.

Anyone who watched that duet with Susan and Elaine knows that Susan completely blew this bitch out of the water. Paige sounded reedy and struggled hitting the highs. Elaine Paige is a stage star in England. She has worked hard and long at her art. The British take their stage performing VERY seriously. Although Ms. Boyle has a marvelous voice, she does not have much stage presence. It seems to me that's what Ms. Paige is objecting to.

Elaine Paige is a bitch. Youtube provides exposure…not talent someone doesn't already possess. The fact that Boyle was more accessible cannot negate the entertainment value she provides. She spent decades tending to her family, and toward the end of those years her mother. What Paige is referring to is "paying your dues" to become famous…the years of hard work it takes to become successful. I think Boyle relinquishing her dreams to focus on her family more than suffices for those dues one pays to be worthy of the level of success that Boyle has achieved…and most certainly deserves.
There's a lot of truth to what she says, but she's old enough to know that life is a lot about luck, too. You could say the same thing about lottery winners. What would life be without a little bit of luck? All grind, I say.

I HATE SuBo but I think Paige is a bit off base here. I'm sure that Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, and Miranda Lambert (Nashville Star) would be puzzled by the idea that longevity can't be earned through reality show competitions. And I'm sure that folks like Beyonce (who was on Star Search as a kid with Destiny's Child), Justin Timberlake (also on Star Search and on the Mickey Mouse Club), Christina Aguilera (who was the Mickey Mouse Club), Fergie (on Kids Incorporated), Alannis Morriesette (You Can't Do That On Television), and Drake (Degrassi) also don't know what it means to entertainment ppl because they have a reality/television show background. It's a good thing Paige is here to enlighten us all about that.
