PETA Goes After Punxsutawney Phil!!!!
We appreciate what they're trying to do, but this is a little MUCH, don't U think????
Apparently PETA has decided that the most badass groundhog on the planet, Punxsutawney Phil, is not treated with the respect he deserves, and instead of doing the job himself, they want a robot groundhog to let the world know if springtime is on its way or not!!
Gemma Vaughn, an Animals in Entertainment Specialist for the organization looking out for our animal friends, wrote in a statement,
“Make the compassionate decision to use an animatronic Phil and retire the live groundhogs who are used for Groundhog Day activities to a sanctuary. Tradition is no excuse for cruelty.”
Animatronic Phil? They might as well use one of the robot dinosaurs from Jurassic Park to do the job if tradition is so passé!
The Groundhog Club, which takes care of Phil, responded with,
“Phil is probably treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania. He’s got air conditioning in the summer, his pen is heated in winter … He has everything but a TV in there. What more do you want?”
HAHAHA. If that's truly the case, then we're gonna have to side with The Groundhog Club. Sounds like Punxsutawney Phil lives a pretty sweet animal life.

I'm willing to bet that if they opened the pen and tried to let Phil loose, he'd say, Hell No I Won't Go! and shuffle back in his comfy ass crib. PETA dipwads.

I work in the child protective services field not far from Punxsy and I can tell ya without a doubt Phil does get treated better then 90% of the kids in PA. Peta needs to focus their attention on something else and get a life!

In my neighborhood we set traps and put poison down groundhog tunnels and kill them. They eat my roses and I hate them with a passion!

I grew up in Punxsutawney. Phil is definitely treated very, very well. He's handled by one person, and that person knows how to properly hold him. People in Punxsutawney like to hunt groundhogs, so Phil never would have lived very long if he were in the wild. Alot of groundhogs get ran over by cars all the time. So there isn't anything wrong with Punxsutawney Phil. He's spoiled and lives a very easy life. He's worshiped by thousands of people, and there's no cruelty in how he is treated. PETA shouldn't be trying to ruin hundreds of years of tradition. There are a lot of issues that they should be focusing on instead.
The vice president of PETA, Marybeth Sweetland, is a type A diabetic, who stays alive by using insulin. We know that insulin manages diabetes through animal testing. She doesn't believe she is a hippocrite though, b/c she needs to stay alive in order to fight for animals lives. They kill 10,000 companion animals a year at their Norfolk, VA compound. They will send radicals to dog shows to poison and kill the dogs just so they cannot be shown. Sir Paul McCartney is a PETA supporter, yet he goes horseback riding….they are a cult of DANGEROUS hippocrites who feel justified in using extreme, violent force to shove there beliefs down everyones' throats. Please people, use your brains and God given ability to fact find. They're dangerous and hippocritical, and, they prey on the innocent love and compassion of animal lovers to fuel they're extemism!
This post is so fucking stupid Perez. All PETA's doing is trying to release a WILD ANIMAL back to the WILD. Is that so RIDICULOUS? Jeez.

pretzel, I live in a town about 20 minutes from Punxsutawney, PA. I've gone to see Phil a number of times, and my grandparents live less than a mile from his awesome habitat- that rodent has it made. Long live Phil, viva Punxsy! (and viva Perez & Gagaloo!)
I'm from punxsy and phil is fine. give it a rest PETA. find something else to cry about!
He works one hour a year. How can that be too stressful.
I've been to Gobblers Knob. Phil is only there on Groundhog Day. The rest of the year he has a habitat in town in the library window. He's not exposed to elements, doesn't have to forage for his own food and has a wonderful life as a beloved mascot for the city. Peta should do research before putting foot in mouth.
I'm surprised it took this long. PETA will do ANYTHING for publicity and they'll continue to do nothing for animals.

PETA is dumb as hell. There are animals being killed everyday that actually need help and they are worried about a groundhog living in captivity, who has heating and ac? I have neither of those. I'm pretty sure he has it made.
It's my opinion that the folks that look after Punxsutawney Phil look after him FAR better than Peta ever would. I've read layers of horror stories about what happens to stray dogs that they round up.
I think when watchdog groups like PETA act in such a silly and ridiculous manner, their cause is hurt, not helped. This kind of action prevents us from taking them seriously, and in the end it's basically self-destructive behavior.
Leave the Phil The Eff alone! If PETA was really concerned about ANIMALS then go after the Prez of the US. Check his and his wifes closet for Animal products!! Look for leather and Furs. Leave the Pampered Groundhog alone. Robot?? so effing dumb!
PETA needs to start using robotic Peta members. It's cruel and unnatural, all of those poor human beings being exposed to radical positions and being indoctrinated into doing Peta's bidding, when they should be living normal lives working and donating time and what they can spare to the lcoal S.P.C.A.
I'd rather retire the groundhog and get a little retarded boy or some white trash fat man to do it if they're treated so well. Give them some dosh in these hard, economic times.
Okay, i live in Punxsutawney, and Phil is a king here. In the summer he stays at the library in an air conditioned room. The library women yell at you if you tap on the glass/try to wake him up. trust me i've tried. last winter, i walked past my neighbors house (ben hughes, the handler) and i saw Phil in his house…. Really? if they treated Phil so horrible, i think he might be dead. I support PETA on everything, i'm completely against the abuse of animals and think people who do abuse their animals should be beat. But come on now. Phil is fine, he was at my school on friday and he was fine.. come on. find something else to talk about. Kay thanks.
