The always seksi and usually intelligent Johnny Depp decided to put his two cents in about director Roman Polanski's upcoming return to the US to face charges for drugging and sodomizing a 13 year old girl in 1977.
Depp, who must be prepping for a role as a conspiracy theorist, says,
"Why now? Obviously there is something going on somewhere. Somebody has made a deal with someone. Maybe there was a little money involved, but why now?"
Um, we hate to be rude, Johnny, but we saw The Ninth Gate, the SHITEOUS movie you two collaborated on, and if that is any indication of what Polanski is capable of, then you should know better.
Apparently he doesn't though, and continued to say,
"Roman is not a predator. He's 75 or 76 years old. He has got two beautiful kids, he has got a wife that he has been with for a long, long time. He is not out on the street."
Who cares if he's a predator or not? He committed a PREMEDITATED, VIOLENT crime against a minor. Actions have consequences, folks. Let's all keep that in mind.

Polanski may have committed a crime, but it does not mean he is a criminal. To put him to trial now is not morally correct, and to condemn him would be even worse.
It is sad.. people forget this is not about who Roman is now.. It's about the crime committed then and the fact that he has been on the run from it. He needs to be treated like everyone else… and come back and face the consequences of his actions.

Johnny didn't defend him. He's asking valid questions. Why now? Actions may have consequences but our legal system isn't perfect and most definitely was not with RP was convicted. I hope you've done your research on that to help form your opinion on this situation. I don't know the proper punishment for this crime but I think the victim should choose and because it's been outstanding so long this isn't cut and dry. There are many other factors (age, his behavior since 77, the mother of the victim, the victim, the prosecutor in 77, etc.) that now have to be heavily considered. It's a unique case, they all are.

YOU ARE WRONG! The victim has forgiven Polanski a long time ago and fount peace and rest after all that has happened. This girl hasn't been the only young girl who got involved with an older guy in a sexual relationship, only to regret it afterwards and to have a feeling of being pressured into it all.
The US Justice system failed at a few points. To make sure the girl stayed anonimous, Polansky pleaded guilty to unlawful intercourse with a minor. For this, his punishment would be reduced to time served in prison. But the judge made it clear he would not honour this agreement thus Polanski fled. And with good reason.
All that has been proven is that he had sex with a minor. It's unclear if she was willing or not, if she was forced or not, if she was drugged by him or by her own actions. So violent? Not proven. Premeditated? Not proven. Is he a predator? Even that's not proven. You're not a judge, jury and executioner! Stop behaving as such!

Perez, I understand your frustration but I don't think you understand the situation COMPLETELY. Watch the film Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. It was an HBO documentary that came out about a year and a half ago. It sets the stage for what happened before, during and after the case and I think it might change your opinion on it. Or maybe it won't. Still, it will provide you with information you might not have known before. The more we educate ourselves the more of a balanced perspective we can have. Check it out.

If you even bothered to look up the case (which you clearly haven't) you would know that the charges were dropped for the rape and drugging of the young girl, they were then changed to consentual sex with a minor due to the little evidence and the mothers and the girls background in the industry. It's still a crime yes, but the things to keep in mind are he's european and the age of consent there is much lower (north america i think it's 16, europe its 14). Try not to forget the victim in this case though, who has said on record countless times, that she has made peace with what happened, and has made peace with polanski. She wants nothing more than to be left alone and has even said that she feels polanski has served a sentence equal to the punishment he would have received, had he not fled the country, upon fleeing the united states.

I've said this before. I am not condoning by any means what he did 30 + years ago, but, laws were broken not only by Polanski, but also by the prosecutor and judge at the time. A deal was made. He served the time given to him. This is called DOUBLE JEOPARDY folks. He was being convicted for the same crime twice. Good or bad, the courts have to follow our constitution. If you went to court and the judge says you have to pay a 50 dollar fine for speeding, and you say ok, and pay, and later the judge comes back asn says, you know what, pay another 100 bucks and do a few months in jail, how would you feel? 1) He pleaded not guilty on all counts at arbitration.
2) Agreed to plead guilty to sex w a minor only as part of a plea bargain.
3) The victims mother presented her daughter as being much older in hopes of furthering her career.
5) The accuser received a half million dollars in damages from Polanksi, publicly forgave him, and doesn't want him to be prosecuted.
6) Polanski completed court ordered rehab periods, fleeing the country after the fact upon learning the plea bargain which had been agreed to by BOTH parties and he had kept up his end, would not be honoured.
The kids mother is the real criminal, offering up her daughter like that to further her career, lying about the kids age, and getting a hefty paycheck outta it.
Polanski paid their price, and kept up his end of the plea bargain, why should he be punished for a 3rd time because some fame hungry judge decided not to keep his word decades ago. Leave the man alone.

Re: tnieblas – Johnny made his mistakes…he was a Hollywood bad boy, he trashed hotels, he did some drugs, he dropped out of school, he got in fights, he has had his friend die of an OD infront of the club he co-owned. He had his issues but he has always been smart and an amazing actor. Johnny may not be the poster boy of the cookie-cutter actor but thats what makes the fans love him so much; he plays crazy roles, he's got that rebel look and he was a bad boy but he never did anything that was actually really bad and that would make you write him off and think he was a bad person.
