Not A Good Sign! Dear John Gets New Ending

Guess the test audiences must have flipped their shiz!!
The latest crappy romance Nicholas Sparks book turned film, Dear John, made a last minute change to the ending and shot a new scene in early January!
Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum both were present for filming in Los Feliz, CA.
According to a rep,
"The filmmakers, with Nicholas' blessing, added a scene that leaves the audience with more possibility of what might happen."
Making last minute changes is never a good sign!
Although we can't account for the quality of the book, Nicholas Sparks isn't exactly James Joyce so we're sure alterations to the story aren't compromising the novel's 'integrity!'
Either way, we bet this one won't suck as badly as the one Slutty Cyrus had him write for her though!!!

Dear John is not some crappy romance novel. It is the best book I've ever read. I don't know about the movie, but the book was outstanding.
i've read the book and i don't want to ruin it for anyone but yeah it isn't the happy fairy tale ending that every freaking romance story has. so of course they are going to add in a scene so all the teen girls don't cry their little hearts out. why not keep the original ending and let the girls realize that THIS IS REALITY.
So I read the book. The ending in the book…well…it doesn't suck…it's not a happy ending. Not for a Nicholas Sparks book. So now I will go see the movie to see if the movie gets a better ending. It's a great book, just not the ending that leaves you content.
Great book, but I was a little bummed at the end… I was wondering how audiences would take it… Excited to see the end result. : )
i usually never comment on what perez writes b/c usually they're funny. this time, it irritated me so much that i had to say something. nicholas sparks is a fantastic writer! Dear John is an amazing novel about someone's selfless love! the fact that you would call it a "crappy romance" before you've even read the book exposes your ignorance and stupidity.
This is GREAT news!! I absolutely LOVED the book… up until the end that is. The ending was completely unrealistic and ruined the entire book-long love story.
I'm not familiar with any Nicholas Sparks' work but I am with James Joyce and I think it's just poor journalism that you choose to compare two authors who write two completely different genres. James Joyce is famous for his sacrilegious tales that negatively depicts Ireland whereas, from the sounds of things, this Nicholas Sparks writes romance novels. It's like comparing Paparotti and Britney Spears!!! IDIOT!!!!!!!
the book was really awesome, its really really great, i am looking forward to the movie, especially now that channing is starring in it
Dear John is a fabulous novel but I have to say the ending just isnt what you would expect it to be.. I NEVER say this, but I am for once in my life happy they changed the ending… I really was hoping they would. I mean lets face it with the ending it had, the movie would not have the best reviews, they had no choice but to change it.
Dear John is an AMAAAAZING book!! It's not a crappy romance novel like you may think. Give it a read and you'll see. The book brings alive emotions SO well. It's a wonderful book and I hope the movie does it justice. I wish they had kept the ending of the movie the same as the book's, but I guess we'll see how they make it different.
Changing endings is not that uncommon after previewing the movie for a test audience. The ending to "Fatal Attraction" was changed and they added scenes to "Top Gun" after filiming was completed. Those are just two that come to mind. It doesn't mean the film is bad, just that it didn't test well.
Oh yes, one more thing though. The filmmakers TOTALLY ruined the ending to the "Time Travelers Wife" by changing the ending. I can't believe the writer let them do that.
Re: SS_Savannah – by saying its the best book you've ever read, your also saying you haven't read many books.
Nicholas Sparks is an exceptional writer. The book, Dear John, is amazing even w/o a happy ending. The book he wrote for M.C., The Last Song, is a wonderful read too. None of the movies have come close to his books. I look forward to seeing Dear John but am not expecting to be blown away.
I cant wait for Dear John and I know it will be amazing! As for the Last Song with Miley I think that will be even better because it is my favorite book and I know she will be amazing! I don't see why you hate Miley so much? What has she ever done to you? NOTHING! Anyway Both Dear John and The LAst SOng will be amazing but I think The Last Song will be better!
Ok how can you say that about Nicholas Sparks…Umm helloo what about the Notebook, Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember? As I recall those were ALL great movies base on books WRITTEN by NICHOLAS SPARKS!
Well in my opinion this was one of the best romance novels i've read. I'm so excited to see the movie, the ending was sad and not exactly what i was hoping for so i'm anxious to see how they're going to change it.
Re: bjade912 – NEWSFLASH: It's very common for people to fall in love with someone else. Fucking idiot.
For those who think Nicholas Sparks is a great writer- I laugh at you. I a major in English and Literature and am going for my master. If you tweens learned what real literature is- you'd realize the pure formulaic crap that Sparks dishes out. His novels are based on cliches. So Perez, I fully agree with you on this one. James Joyce=great writer. Nicholas Sparks=a joke. But for 12-15 year olds its okay.
I bet they're gonna change it to a happy ending.
Re: Christie7926 – Calm down. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. Abrasive bitch.
best book Ive ever read! just from the trailor I can see about a thousand changes from the book.. Im sure itll be fucked up! they always fuck up the movies from the book! Gr! I was really looking forward to this being a movie too and now Ill prolly hate it.. oh well @ least Ill always have the book.
Last Song was an amazing book as well. let go of your hatred for Miley because she is not the freak that is Lady GaGa
Re: Beanie72 – that's awesome that you're getting your masters and all but people don't read these books for "real literature" they read the books for entertainment.
I haven't read Dear John, but I have read The Last Song, and it's decent. I'm sure they'll be able to make decent movies for both…..
Re: Beanie72 –
wow you sound so obnoxious, i'm 22 years old not some tween and yes while the book is not great literature it has a great love story behind it and i don't think it's completely cliche. And honestly you're siding with perez…really? so really your opinion should be irrelevant.
alright perez, I love your site but DEAR JOHN IS NOT CRAPPY AND NICHOLAS SPARKS IS AMAZING. I don't like Miley Cyrus so she might destroy the last song with her terrible acting but that doesn't mean that the movie is crap. I think you're a little too hard on Miley Cyrus. Give the girl a break. Demi Lovato looks like a much bigger bitch
both dear john and the last song are great books.
im happy they are changing the ending as well as adding things to the script that are not in the book.. the book was good, but it for it to be put on the big screen it lacked certain depth. i cant wait to see the changes and see amanda and channing shine!
Unless Channing drops trou, what difference does it make?
Slutty Cyrus? Funny how she's Miley Cyrus the last few times and now it's back to name calling. Yup, this is proof that more than one person is writing PerezHilton.com aka your fucking sister.
I saw the premire of this held two weeks ago on Fort Bragg in NC. I did not read the book but I was told by those friends that I went with, who had read the book, that the movie did not follow the book. There is a happy ending. This is a cute movie.
Dear John is undeniably "chick lit." Nick Sparks's books are entertaining but formulaic. He's no James Joyce (kudos to woteio for pointing out that there's really no comparison anyway), nor is he a Gabriel Garcia Marquez or a Joseph Heller. He's the James Patterson of tearjerkers; he does for romance novels what Jodi Picoult does for trauma and Dan Brown does for conspiracy. None are great writers (and the books in no way belong in the literary canon), but they all have merits. They do well to write entertaining and engaging works.
Dear John does, in fact, technically fall into the category of "crappy romance novel." Nick Sparks does for romance what Jodi Picoult does for trauma and what Dan Brown does for conspiracy. His books, while entertaining, are formulaic and targeted toward teen girls and middle-aged women. Nicholas Sparks has almost succeeded in making the romance novel legitimate, and has certainly succeeded in cementing a place for himself in the market. His books are practically a genre in themselves - bona fide romantic tearjerkers. It's not that they're necessarily bad - it's just that I take offense at the idea that they should even remotely be included in the canon. I used to read Nick Sparks, but then I got taste.
Re: Beanie72 – This is the first time i have ever commented on one of these things but i think it is absolutely ridiculous that you are saying that nicholas sparks is for tweens. i am 23 years old and he is one of my favorite authors. i loved dear john and have read it a bunch of times and it gets better and better every time. i am so excited to see this movie and i think it will be a good depiction of the book from what i have seen so far.
and p.s. you say you are getting your masters in english & literature? maybe you should check your grammar. you made a couple mistakes there and you should probably stay in school a little longer. when i have children, i hope their teachers aren't as ignorant as you.
I am sooo excited for this news! i've read dear john (p.s. i'm 21, not a tween) and i loved the book minus the ending which put me in an absolutely horrible mood. so i was really worried about the movie! Furthermore, i've read the last song as well and although i didn't picture miley cyrus while i read it i think she will do just fine! Lastly, you should really read the books because you can't judge nicholas sparks until you've read one of his books!!
I was one of the audiences you guys are talking about… save ur time and watch the notebook… the only difference is the guy is in the army. and they dont end up together…
quite simple… same author same basic story. im glad i didnt pay for this.
Remember Me was pretty good.
I was in those test audiences!!
Let me save you some money. watch the notebook, and now just imagine the guy is in the army and in the end they dont end up together….
Remember Me was alot better
Ok for the most part all off his books have a fucked ending.. not fairy tale.. for god sakes even the notebook ended sadly. But by far message in the bottle still has me choking up. I would like to see if they will do a alternate ending for the dvd.. like the real ending and the "fairy tale" ending movie ending which is what will most likely be played in theaters.. but i will still go and watch
Wow that's awesome! I read the book too and I hated the ending. It made me not want to watch the movie anymore but I think I will now. I'm in my twenties and appreciate romantic novels like Nicholas Sparks' books. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion and shouldn't be put down for it!
Re: kat2586 – I was thinking the same thing! Someone who is bragging on Perezhilton.com about his or her educational qualifications in an attempt to put others down for their taste in literature should probably proofread his or her post.
yay for making a great book into a crappy movie…..i hate books turn movies most of the time because a good majority of the movie does not follow the book. I loved this book and was looking forward to seeing it……I am not sure about the fact that they decided to change the ending…..that's not how the book goes.
Nicolas Sparks is an AMAZING writer, i bet you have never even picked up one of his novels, you just watch the movies instead! you are a fucking idiot who doesnt even research what they are talking about, you dont watch the shows you claim to either, prime example : true blood…people laugh at you because you pretend to know what you are talking about!
Dear John was an amazing book ! I couldn't put it down for most of it. I'd seen it in the store a couple months back as well with a new cover on it, and seen they made a movie out of it, so I have been looking forward to seeing that. The ending is not what you would normally expect, but it was an awesome book. My thoughts are that most movies that are made based on books are not as good as the book, and that's pretty normal. I'm planning on going to go see this movie.
lol, well im glad i didnt havent to say something. Looks as though everyone else did it for me. lol YAY! Nicholas Spark's books are amazing and leave you longing for that kind of love, even if you cant keep it. LOVE LOVE LOVE his books. Hate that when they turn them into movies they change shit!
Re: koolgiy – everyone is entitled to their opinion. If SS_Savannah thinks Dear John is the best book she's read than who cares??!!!! It's her opinion NOT YOURS!!!! And I can't wait to see the movie!!
Re: Beanie72 – I'm clapping for you!!!! (sense the sarcasm). People read Dear John for entertainment value not to learn something so who cares what other people read and think??. Btw just because you have a major in English and Literature doesn't mean your better than anyone else, but I do have a question wouldn't you know proper English if you were majoring in those subjects???? Just saying.
fuck you perez
Re: Crystal_Gonz – Re: kat2586 – Re: mountain girl1983 –
Sorry for everyone I offended but to one of you who said "Your siding with Perez" and then insults me, Why do you even come on this site if you hate him? I never get that
I did come off as obnoxious hahaha and I apologize but I really cannot stand Nicholas Sparks and all of my professors have made me grow to hate him. I just cannot appreciate anything thats formulaic anymore.
So again, everyone relax, I just think Sparks is highly over-rated. ALSO for those making fun of my grammar- dude, its perezhilton.com. I didn't look over my grammar before hitting "submit comment". So sorry for those I offended. Channing is hot. That is all
Re: kat2586 –
Also kat, I am not looking to becoming a professor- i'd die in that environment. But thanks anyways. I am sorry for offending anyone. But I stick by my literature point of view. Its like Twilight which makes me a bit mad.
Re: Pinkasaurus –
Like I said, its perezhilton.com and I didn't look over what I said before hitting submit. My bad.
Re: JacVA1 – a walk to remember movie was better than the book in my opinion.
lol you think nicholas and miley have no talent yet yourr oh so fond of lady gaga. HAHA SHES the one without talent.. OHHHH i get it now, its perhaps because she resembles a man.
and beanie just shut the fuck up
Fuck you! Nicholas Sparks is a great writer!!
Re: Froggy338 – i second that!
