MacGruber Pisses Off MacGyver Creator!

| Filed under: Ryan PhillippeFilm FlickersLegal MattersJason Bateman

The creator of MacGyver is all butt-hurt over the upcoming MacGruber movie!

Hey, buddy - it's been a sketch on SNL for years now!

Lee Zlotoff is looking to stop the April release of the film, starring Val Kilmer, Jason Bateman and Ryan Phillippe, because he believes the comedy violates copyright law!

"We feel they're infringing our rights," says Zlotoff's lawyer, who is helping his client file a lawsuit against Relativity Media, the execs behind the MacGruber flick.

    Copyright law clearly permits parody.

  2. 2

Copyright law permits parody but he should sue anyway just to keep the losers on SNL who cant make a funny movie for sh*t out of theaters. People all over the world bust their butts going to school, working tough jobs, and all these idiots have to do is make comedy which people do easily everyday, yet they can`t, and THEY are the "pros"??

  3. 3

This is dumb. SNL has been in production for this movie for a very long time. And now there going to say something about it!?!?

  4. 4

Re: Naomid – fuck you. snl is greattt, and they arn't making this movie, just the two people in the skit

  5. 5

    It's starring Will Forte.

  6. 6

    its hilarious on SNL.
    We need lubricatnt!!
    Anal lubricant?

  7. 7

I think its all part of the promotion.

The movie is gonna suck anyway, so why bother?

  9. 9

Parody is permitted by law, this will not hold up.

Spoofs can do that…(piss off the creator). Just ask Weird Al. They're a mad magazine type nod to something people recognize. Zlotoff should have thought of it himself. Wait. Something tells me he wouldn't spoof himself as he's the lawyering up type here. Another person would have enjoyed it. Maybe they want some cash.

of course, this guy should get $$. it is a take off of his writings and his idea. duh!

  12. 12

the hot shots movies were a parody of Rambo and did they sue them?… i don´t think so…..

  13. 13

"making life-saving inventions out of household materials, MacGruber!"

  14. 14

I watched last Saturdays episode of SNL.
OH MY GOD, the show is sooo bad, words cannot describe how painfully unfunny some (eh, most) of the sketches were.
I feel sorry for the those who missed out on the glory days.
SNL in the 90's was hilarious and filled with talent.
    Carvey, Hartman, Spade, Farely etc.
The current cast even makes Lubitz look like a comedy genius.
Samberg is the best talent they currently have, that is a sad statement.

  15. 15

That skit is so freaking stupid. SNL sucks now…

  16. 16

It's a terrible sketch, he should be upset. SNL hasn't been funny for a very, VERY long time.

  17. 17

I would mention the whole thing about parodies and how they're protected by law, but I kinda want to see something happen to the release of the movie, because it looks so fucking awful.

  18. 18

If thats the case then every single movie that the Wayans brothers had spoofed, like all the scary movie movies, or Dance Movie. Give it a break and stop cluttering up the legal system with frivolous law suits wasting tax payer money. But Perez knows all about that (Just ask The Black Eyed Peas) Its so funny that a band that begins with Black eye gave you one Perez.

  19. 19

you know what happens every time SNL makes a movie of one of their skits.. NOTHING !!

  20. 20

Just because you give the same character a slightly different name shouldn't give you the right to cash in on it. At least the "Starsky and Hutch" or "Dukes of Hazzard" movies weren't so shameless.

  21. 21

it does seem a bit too close to the original character. other parodies listed ("scary movie", for example) are not as focused and parody a genre.
can't imagine it will be a big moneymaker, but seems compensation and approval would be appropriate.
can you imagine the response from jk if a parody called "harry potters" came out?

  22. 22

No one knows more about "butt-hurt" than you Mario.

  23. 23

Re: pabst – It shouldn't permit if it the purpose is to make a movie of these type of standards to make a good buck from it.

  24. 24

It's a parody…. this will totally still happen. The creator has no argument!

  25. 25

It's as people have said…. Copyright laws permit parodies which this is.
I don't watch SNL, but thought the preview for this movie looked pretty funny.

  26. 26

The public at large should file a class action lawsuit against this movie!

It is an infringement of mental health issues. This 'sketch' from SNL sucks so bad it is incredible that anyone over the age of five would find it funny. Same with past sketches with Forte. (The Falconer, anyone??). He is the worst 'comic' on their show in many years.

  27. 27

If anything, its gonna tank ass, the skits on snl weren't that funny, infact it was down right lame. so…good luck with that.

  28. 28

I wonder if RDA is going to be in it.

  29. 29

LOL. I love how they waited until after the movie was made and ready to be released, so they could attach themselves to the money train. (If in fact it makes any.)

  30. 30

Zlotoff is a raging idiot. Thanks to Larry Flynt parody is a protected form of expression, and MacGruber is such an obvious parody that one can see Zlotoff's attempt to sue Relativity Media as truly pathetic.

  31. 31

Re: Naomid – you're an idiot. SNL has had funny movies in the theaters. Wayne's world ring a bell? They may have had some flops but this could be good, you don't know.

Also, copyright law does permit parody. Fair use. The MacGyver creator don't have a viable claim.

  32. 32

What you people who claim, "parody is fair use" don't get is that there is market harm to Zlotoff by virtue of "MacGruber" coming out. An actual MacGuyver movie is in development. This is often the most significant factor courts raise when ruling against a parody. So, Zlotoff has a case. A good one.

  33. 33

Lol MacGruber! I love that scit. But a movie. I don't know about that.

  34. @v@ says – reply to this

Re: dirtmovie – A MacGyver movie in development? How convenient. I say the MacGruber movie will help Zlotoff sell seats, because this generation doesn't even freaking know who the hell MacGyver is, so people might even go just to compare the two. There is no such thing as bad publicity, and that holds true here because MacGyver is such a singular and niche concept.

  35. 35

Re: Nostradamus – Agreed. It has been unfunny for years now. It seems it would be funny if you personally knew any of the cast members, but thats it. This film looks good, though.
