Pay Up And He'll Stay

With Howard Stern's Sirius XM Radio deal coming to an end later this year, the funny man is using this time to try and negotiate a new contract.

Howard's being pretty smart about it too, making sure to mention it publicly.

Just last month, he mentioned being approached by terrestrial radio and even getting offers. And Clear Channel Communications is interested in Stern as well.

However, Stern's current contract gave him $500 MILLION(!!!!!) for a five year deal.

And with Sirius XM's stock as low as it is, and the economy as bad as it is, who's really going to have the money to pay him the big bucks for a new show?

But Sirius XM does want him to stay. Says Sirius chief Mel Karmazin:

"In this world of fragmentation, content prevails. Howard Stern is great content. Howard would be sought-after by anyone. He's a great talent. Having said that, we would like him to stay with us, and we are optimistic he will continue to do so."

Yea, if he takes a paycut maybe.

And Clear Channel Radio CEO John Hogan has publicly admitted that Stern would be a great fit for his company. Adding that Clear Channel is "the most logical company for (Stern) to optimize his exposure and financial return."

Money talks. And if Clear Channel can outbid Sirius, we have a feeling Stern will make the move.

Sirius should just pay up. Stern's one of the few reasons to own satellite radio, in a day and age where iPods and cell phones can sync easily to a car stereo.

  2. 2

Yeah, I think we all know that he isn't the kind of man that is going to be loyal to a company that has already paid him a half a billion dollars, even though he knows they'll fail if he leaves. There isn't enough money on the planet for this a-hole. He lost me about 2 years ago, Just couldn't do it anymore. Him and his royal crew. What a shame, they were absolutely the best.

  3. 3

It's not like he needs the money! But, don't burn your bridges.

  4. 4

HOWARD COME BACK TO RADIO - YOU'VE LOST YOUR RELEVANCE

  5. 5

i used to be a huge fan. but i can't listen anymore since artie stabbed himself. so, i don't care anymore what howard does.

  6. 6

Not sure why you keep on posting old news! He is the only reason that I pay for Sirius radio. I have a personal music library of over 30,000 songs so I do not need it for the music. I think that they need him. But not sure if they can afford to pay that much money. But then again Sirius would have went out of business 5 years ago without him. By the way the show is so much better with out that fat loser Artie. Howard talks a lot more now and is not interrupted has much and he is picking on the rest of the staff a lot more. Not sure what tonybotz means by Howard lost his relevance! He took sirius from 600,000 to over 6 million before the merger and his is the most taked about radio personality.

  7. 7

Clearly you really don't listen to Howard Stern, he has said repeatly he will never ever return to terrestial radio especially under Clear Channel, the one company that crippled his creativity. It is all a smokescreen to get people to listen to regular radio again. Howard said he would retire before he would be under those corporate nuts again. FREEDOM IS A WONDERFUL THING!!!

  8. 8

Sirius needs to pay, otherwise I will drop the service, like millions of other listeners. Howard is the only reason I have Sirius.

  9. 9

Dude perez do your fucking homework, Howard Stern will never go back to terrestrial radio….EVER! He has said it like a million times.

  10. 10

Re: tonybotz – Dude, lost his relevance? are you serious? He single handendly forced the merger of both satelite radio companies, got 6 million people to pay for radio and still makes headlines with his interviews and appearances. He always gives Letterman huge ratings when he's on and couldnt be more relevant than he is now.

  11. 11

howard is the only reason i have satellite. If he leaves, i drop sirius. although, i must say that he is pulling for reasons to make the show interesting lately. I miss artie. I miss his stories, I miss his comments. Esp. now during football season, he'd be providing us with much more a full show. Howard sounds bored.. and i'm getting bored, but will stick it out. Everything is cyclical.

  12. 12

I say let him quit…Has anybody listened to the show lately. Stern is really a shadow of his former persona. Most of the time it seems that he can't wait to finish a daily show and go home. The contract that Stern and his cronies signed with Sirius must be the world's best contract ever. The show is hampered by constant vacations, endless reruns, unfunny banter and strange tangents that make Stern sound like a crusty old man…Perhaps because that's what he is…I find myself listening to his show less and less…Sirius is full of other wonderful content and it will surely survive eminent departure of Stern…I say let him go and let him work for some terrestrial station…Let him work for a living…Give him a dose of reality. Look in the mirror Stern…you are Imus!!!

  13. 13

STERN IS NOT GETTING $500 MIL FOR HIMSELF!! FAT BOY DO YOUR RESEARCH!! STERN SAID $500 MIL IS $100 MIL/PER YEAR FOR THE ENTIRE SHOW. THAT INCLUDES HIS SALARY, STAFF, ADMIN COSTS, BOOKING, ETC. - EVERYTHING! ROBIN'S SALARY AND PRIMARY HOSTS ARE NEG SEPARATELY. STERN WOULD BE STUPID TO LEAVE PAY RADIO FOR TERRESTRIAL RADIO. HE'S NOT STUPID. THAT'S THE REASON HE LEFT TERRESTRIAL RADIO IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE IT'S A PITA. MEL KARMAZIN HAS BEEN STERNS BOSS 4EVER SINCE HIS CAREER STARTED AT CBS RADIO. HE'S THE ONE THAT STICKS UP FOR STERN AND WHY HE JUMPED TO SIRIUS. ANOTHER BOSS WOULDNT BE AS SUPPORTIVE WHEN SHIT HAPPENS. STERN TALKED SHIT ABOUT CLEAR CHANNEL FOR YEARS AND ALL OF SUDDEN THEY ARE HUNKY DORY?? NEVER HAPPEN… STERN WILL STAY WITH KARMAZIN.

  14. 14

    Re: Viclis

You got everything right. Good post.

  15. 15

Stern will never go back to terrestrial radio. He'll re-sign with Sirius or retire. End of story. All of this media speculation is pure BS. Don't get duped by these Clear Channel assholes.

  16. 16

man, he has said it a million times. pretty much since the day he started. NO TESTICLE RADIO.

  17. 17

I dont care if people like him. He does NOT deserve 500 million for being on a radio show.

This is how Sirius/XM should handle this, they should do twho versions of the Stern show, one for Broadcast radio to air in syndication, a version that would be censored, and less blue, albeit, broadcast live, much like Basic Cable TV. A second version of the Stern show should be done strictly for Sirius/XM Satelite Radio that is X-rated. In this way, Stern can, and will, renew his high profile in the media among broadcast radio audiences, which is the mainstream audience, while giving Sirius/XM Radio audience a Premium service, much like HBO, and Showtime, vs. Basic Cable TV ala MTV, and FX.

    19

The core of my last post is to point-out this, if Stern is placed back into Radio Syndication with a censored version of his show, while maintaining a sexed-up Rated-X version of the Stern Show on Sirius/XM, well, it then…makes maintaining a deal with Stern affordable for Sirius/XM…and it makes sense for Stern, as it gives him leeway to enjoy both the commercial radio broadcast market, as well as the pay to listen, satellite radio market. It is a win/win situation…for both Stern and Sirius/XM…and will only probably boost radio subscriptions for the pay satellite radio service, from listeners of broadcast radio that are able to hear the censored version of the Stern Show, if offered of free radio airwaves–and thus, it becomes a 4 hour long commercial for Sirius/XM, each day, everyday, five days a week, while raising Stern's public profile on Terrestrial Radio, and other media, again!!! One, helps the other, and vice-versa.

PLEASE MARIO I BEG YOU STOP POSTING SHIT ABOUT HOWARD !!!!!!!!!!! YOU REALLY SOUND LIKE 1) YOU DON'T LISTEN REG 2) YOU NEVER HAVE LISTENED REG 3) AN ASS Howie is worth every penny and what he gets paid is none of your business. SOMETHING IS WORTH WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT !!! It seems allot of us think he is worth the 12.95 a month and apparently Mel one of the better businessmen in this country also does.

  21. 21

Plus clear channel still owes Howie money from canceling his contract when he was on testicle radio… Howie is an elephant he never forgets shit ..NEVER He is not going back to someone who fired him and didn't even meet their contractual agreements. Listen to him rant about NBC and Leno he has far more respect for himself to lower himself to their level

  22. 22

that is one ugly dude. poor guy.

  23. 23

    $100 million a year ?

Who does he think he is, Rush

I remember him from years ago, and always thought he was funny, but he is not worth that much, just ask Rosie

  24. 24

Howard will not go back to terrestrial radio. If he ends up leaving Sirius, bye Sirius! I know I'm gone. Plus any listener can tell that Howard is "grooming" members of his staff who he thinks has talent so they could carry their own shows too. That will make it easier for him to retire or semi-retire and give him more time off. He only works 4 days a week now and if he renews his contract I'll bet he negotiates even more time off for himself with other shows added to his channels. Plus he probably will do an afternoon show rather that 6 am.

  25. 25

The REAL Howard Stern vanished in 1998! Why should I care who takes him now?

  26. 26

Ever since Artie, that fat failure, failed at a simple suicide attempt, the show has gone down hill. All Stern can do is criticize his co-workers and try to start arguments. Is that really talent? I will be laughing my ass off when he starts complaining about chest pain…which he eventually will. He wishes cancers on people and makes fun of everyone else and their medical problems, like Rush, well I think it will be hillarious when he gets cancer or has a heart attack.

  27. 27

as usual you know nothing fatass. He says on a daily basis money or not, he would not move back to regular radio as there are to many FCC restrictions.

  28. 28

I thought this scumbag was dead, he should stay where he is. Only lonely morons would pay for sat radio Why Why

  29. 29

Howard is the reason I went to Sirius 5 years ago, we pay $40+/mo to listen to him.
Oprah brought no listeners yet they paid her a boat load. No one is complaining about that.
Howard is the King of SiriusXM, if they want their company to succeed they need to keep him.
    If he goes, I go.

  30. 30

As a true Stern Show fan, I listen daily, and he stated last week (and several) times that he WILL NOT under any circumstances go back to terrestrial radio. Who can blame him? Who would want to be hassled daily & have their work edited? There is no replacement for him & his "royal crew" (as one said on here). If you are a real fan, you don't care about what he makes or the politics behind his decisions…

  31. 31

BTW….If you don't want to pay (or feel it's not worth the money), just go to thepiratebay.org and download it daily for free.

  32. 32

Howard and Mel have stuck together for decades and have always done right by each other, so here's my prediction - Howard will go back to Terrestrial Radio. He will sign a short-term (maybe 2 years to start and then yearly options after that) contract with Clear Channel. And the ONLY reason he decides to go back is when ClearChannel rolls out a big press release announcing the appointment of their new Chairman and CEO (drumroll please)… Mel Karmazin. and Mel will promise Howard to give him as much leeway as he possibly can to allow him to do the show he wants within the outer reaches of FCC guidelines. And Mel will also have a private stash of CC cash set aside to settle any FCC fines that come their way, and all of this will be board approved.

  33. 33

Re: Zip – dude, the show right now is 4 hours. Is he supposed to do 8 hours now? Even if he only did 1 hour each show, you would need guests and you'd be repeating the same topics over and over. What a dumb idea. You should just say clone 40 of him and he could do a country and hip hop show as well.

  34. 34

HOWARD WILL NEVER WORK FOR CLEAR CHANNEL- DONT YOU LISTEN TO HIM- YOU SAY U R A FAN PEREZ BUT YET YOU DONT KNOW THAT? HOW LONG HAS HE BEEN FREAKIN OUT ABOUT CLEAR CHANNEL -EVEN WHEN HE WAS ON TERRISTRIAL RADIO - HE TALKED ABOUT THEM-

  35. 35

Howard's not JUST about the $$. That's why I love him and have been a listener and fan for over 15 years. I pay money now just to hear his "content", as Mel K says. To me, he's worth every penny, if not more. However, I don't know him personally, but listening to the man as long as I have gives me an insight into his character. He's genuine, talented and most of all LOYAL. He puts out, every day, for his listeners. Wherever he lands (which for my money is Sirius) it will be in the best interest of his listener, his staff AND himself. LONG LIVE THE KING
