Anne Hathaway Left The Catholic Church For Her Gay Brother

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayAnne HathawayLGBT

Anne Hathaway has revealed that she and her family made the difficult decision to leave the Catholic church when Hathaway's brother came out.

"The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out," Anne revealed in a recent interview with GQ. "Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?"

How incredibly touching!

But Anne soon found she wasn't comfortable calling herself an Episcopalian, either.

"So I'm… nothing," said Hathaway. "F**k it, I'm forming. I'm a work in progress."

Take your time, sweetie!

too bad….you shouldn't let someone's preference on where they put their cock interfere with your faith.

  2. 2

I don't know how much more STYLISH anyone can get.
    We LOVE her.

  3. 3

    The title
    of this
    sounds kinky

  4. 4

    She did the right thing.

  5. 5

Just be yourself, who needs a cult like christianity to tell you what to do or be. Religion is the greatest evil of this world.

  6. 6

I am Episcopalian and my husband Catholic. Non practising and we see the schism in both religions as ancient and outdated. My ex is gay and in a very happy partnership. We need to become more open minded and accept people for who they are not what they are. Mario you are still an idiot.

  7. 7

Good for her. I'm Christian. I attend a church that welcomes everybody. I couldn't have it any other way. I don't believe it's our place to judge…it's God's. Oh and I'm straight but I don't think that matters.

  8. 8

Amazing! What a big decision to make to show how much they love and support their son/brother! In order to fight for gay rights it's going to take the support from heterosexuals as well, the majority needs to join the minority!!

  9. 9

Re: buck – "Where someone puts their cock" shouldn't define them, and shouldn't be an EXCUSE to exlude/descriminate against them…. She stood up for her family. If you can't count on your family then who can you count on?

  10. 10

That was pretty lame of her and her family. Your brother is gay we get it but it shouldn't interfere with your faith. That's just a stupid excuse to quit your religion since nobody freaking cares who's in or out of the closet we're all equal. The problem with gays is that they keep being a bit dramatic when we're all the same in and out. Who fucking cares? Geez.

  11. 11

My family and I were in the same situation when my brother came out. We love him and are delighted to accept him and his husband. Loving my brother and loving the Catholic Church did not jive. I love my brother more than anything in the whole world, so the Catholic Church had to go. There are definitely christian sects that do accept same-sex marriages and are open-minded, but I just haven't found the right place for me yet. I will stay spiritual, but I won't confine myself to a specific arm of Christianity. I am happy I have made the choices that I have made.

I love you Perez, but I'm a sinner and a Catholic and my Church loves me and all sinners. I think it should be reported that the Hathaways left the Catholic Church because it did not prescribe to their life styles. The Catholic Church doesn't care what your race or gender is. They only require your love for the Holy Trinity.

  13. 13

    Re: buck
Well, a religion/faith shouldn't try to insert itself into the sexuality debate and comment on where someone "puts their cock." I'm a pro-choice, pro-gay marriage and pro-female priests Catholic. If the church doesn't evolve soon and make some changes (i.e. support sex prevention in Africa instead of teaching abstinence, while millions and millions of Africans are dying of AIDS, allow female priests, etc.), then I'll leave just like Anne did.

  14. 14

I think that is is worse to give up on the church. We should be working with them to help them accept all individuals instead of removing yourself from the faith. What people don't realize (because the media refuses to print this side of the story) is that in most Catholic churches (maybe more so in the northeast) gays ARE accepted. I even know a few in my own congregation. It's just at this point they are not allowed to marry in the church (a point which I think will eventually change). Isn't it hypocritical to turn your back on one group in order to embrace another? We should all be working together to being the church into a more "modern" route of thinking; remember, the Catholic church is one of the most powerful insitutions in the world. Wouldn't you want to put in the effort to have them on your side? I am sure if the gay community worked at it and presented their argument in a logical and non-accusatory manner, eventually they will win their fight. And don't say "well, they shouldn't have to; they should just be accepted." That's not the way things work. Change happens over time, the gay community won't wake up one morning and realize the U.S. gov't gave them everything they wanted.

  15. 15

People are so stupid with this religion bullshit. It is all fake and does not mean a thing. Made up by people to control weaker people. If there was really a god do you think he would have the time or concern to deal with 7 billion people and countless numbers of other life! Just have faith in yourself, have respect and be good to others. if by some chance that there is a god you would be ok. It does not matter if you are straight, gay or bi.

  16. 16

That is the sweetest thing I have ever heard. I heart her.

  17. 17

    Re: stephie86
I definitely agree with your message, and it is an optimistic one. As a Catholic, I know that the church rarely changes or evolves. There is a drastic need for priests - but the church, thus far, does not allow priests to marry or to allow female priests. Various groups have approached the church to do this. Why won't the church budge? There is an AIDS epidemic in Africa, but the church won't support handing out condoms…which would SAVE LIVES. Why not? Because the church is against BIRTH CONTROL. Faiths should evolve, and the Catholic Church has not. My uncle divorced when he was younger because his wife cheated on him. He was not allowed to get married in a church to his second wife. What a joke. Not the forgiving and accepting message that Jesus preached, right? As much as I believe in the scriptures and in my faith, the church is antiquated and is NOT open to discussion.

  18. 18

Seeing how ALL religion is just another name for "cult", she did the right thing.

  19. 19

episcopalian faith is amazing and so accepting!

  20. 20

Re: coocoosmith – Rational thinking, baby!! that's the way to live your life. Say adios to that imaginary friend and take control!

  21. 21

    fuck this stupid bitch

  22. 22

  23. 23

    good for her!!

  24. 24

Although the Catholic church doesn't believe in homosexuality….the Catholic church believe's that homosexuality is between that person who is gay and God. The people of the Catholic church is not allowed to judge. PERIOD. No one is going to say 'oh you can't be Catholic because your Gay'

  25. 25

    Re: Aussieone
AGREED 1000% percent!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

  26. 26

Which means she was never really Catholic to begin with! ROFL! She left nothing. WHAT A JOKE!

  27. 27

    Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today…

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religon too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace…

    Imagine no possesions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    In a brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world…

You may say i'm a dreamer
But i'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
    -John Lennon

  28. 28

    she's sooooooooooooo smart!!!

  29. 29

Re: Emcanuck – The Episcopal church is probably the closest to Catholic (Church of England vs. Church of Rome) with a big exception. Episcopalians are taught to be tolerant and accept everyone whether they are straight, gay or otherwise. Forgiveness is also big.

  30. 30

Jesus is fake. When you look at the narrative about him, it's all borrowed from older religions. If you look at the Egyptian god Horus, you'll see a lot of parallels between him and jeebus.
Both were born of a virgin.
Both are considered the son of "god".
Both are said to be of royal descent.
Horus's birth was "witnessed" by three solar dieties, jeebus's was witnessed by three wise men.
No data of them exists between the ages of 12 and 30.
Both walked on water, cast out demons, healed the sick, restored sight to the blind.
    Both were crucified.
    Both rose from the grave.
So you see, not only is jesus fake, but the entire concept of him isn't even original. It's bad enough to worship something that's not real, it's even worse when you worship something that was plagiarized.
All gods are fake stolen story stolen birthdates its all a load of shit to control stupid people! fake as fuck

    Re: tnieblas – 24
The catholic church does not give communion to openly gay humans…

  32. 32

It's so sad to know that we've got plenty of non- believers on here. Come on people wake up. Don't be deceived by the devil. God is waiting for you to come back to him. Why would you people praise somebody like this actress who doesn't even know what she is. I agree with her when she said that she is nothing. She is nothing for God is not in her life. Why is it so hard for you people to believe that there is a God? Why do you people got such overwhelming pride? I am hoping that you people now the truth before alla this is over. Believing in God is a winner take all kinda thing. I mean, it wouldn't hurt to be a believer, it wouldn't make you a lesser person to believe in Jesus. Non- believers will always be at the losing end that I am very sure of. I hope you all find the light soon before it's too late.

  33. 33

    All organized religions are idiotic.

Re: gimlet123 – 29 Love the Episcopalians who practice what they preach. God's love is all inclusive. Forgiveness is freedom.

  37. 37

There are no atheists in foxholes”

You have undoubtedly heard the above quote innumerable times.

And it is true, and not only in foxholes, but in all situations in which we might die — when we face possible death, we look to God.

And that is unquestionably the right thing to do.

But it is a big mistake to only look to God when we are in a life or death situation.

Believe in God ALL THE TIME and you will enrich and strengthen your life in ALL situations.

So how do you believe in God?

    It's easy.

    Accept Him.

And accept Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior.

    Then serve God.

    Love others.

    Help others.

    Accept others.

And soon you will be teaching others – by your actions as well as your words.

And always remember that believing in God consists of ACTION — as well as the belief.

So when you truly believe in God, you will take action EVERY DAY to help others and make the world a better place.

And your life will never be the same!

EVERTYHING in your life will strengthen.

  38. 38

Yeah, it's FINE to be a BIGOTTED, JUDGEMENTAL HYPOCRITE when it's not your own brother…STUPID BITCH!

  39. 39

    Family first.
Thousands of gay kids are rejected and disowned by their parents for being honest about their sexuality. The depths of the love demonstrated by the Hathaway family is refreshing and moving.

  40. 40

God doesn't have a denomination is what we all need to learn.

  41. 41

All of you dumb fucks tauting religion and the FAKE god can fuck off!

  42. 42

that is stupid on their parts!!
her brother made a bad choice!

  43. 43

Re: pradagirl7 – they are not treated equally. That is the friggen point.

  44. 44

  45. 45

Meanwhile the Catholic Church has done more than just about any other private organization to help HIV and AIDS patients around the world, and Yes, I mean Gay Men.

Religion is a CULT. Drink the Kool-Aid!!!

  47. 47

    Re: renesmeecullen
"There are no atheists in foxholes” what a load of shit… Another myth just like your god!
That statement "there are no atheists in foxholes" isn't just mistaken, it's bigoted and ugly; a denial of atheists' humanity and the reality of atheist experience with death.
Australian Bureau of Statistics: 45% of Australian troops in world war 2 where atheists.. My grandfather one of them. Noted is the fact this is simular to 42% of UK troops who were atheists.
and 63% of Australian troops in vietnam where atheists.

  48. 48

Re: tnieblas – i grew up as a catholic, went to catholic schools etc. I've "searched", if you will, and tried other religions and in my opinion, catholics are highly judgemental and non accepting of something or someone different and are huge hipocrites.

  49. 49

    Re: graphicphotobug
When did you make the "choice" ? How many men and how many women did you sleep with before you made up your mind ?

  50. 50

    Re: Island25
The Catholic Church's irrational opposition to birth control has caused human suffering especially in Africa where AIDS is spread at a higher rate due to church dogma. …. The catholic dogma against condoms in Africa causes human suffering and death.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most diverse countries on Earth, ….. PNG has the highest incidence of HIV and AIDS in the Pacific region the actons and dogma of the Catholic Church with its irrational opposition to condoms can be directly linked as the key contributing factor- Department of health. Commonwealth government of Australia.

  51. 51

Good for her, I like her even more now. Embrace the atheist in you dear.

  52. 52

Re: renesmeecullen – Mmmmmmm, that's some good prostletyzing. It's still a load of shit. People should care about what is true and work together in reason and common sense to promote the progress of humanity, not promote what makes them feel good and back it up by primitive arameic fables

  53. 53

Re: Island25 – Ha! You can't be fucking serious.

  54. 54

I'm a Catholic, and people seem to think that Catholics are totally against gays, especially in Ireland where I live.
But I actually have two gay best friends and I don't let religion get in the way of our friendship. Screw religion, family and friends are more important.

    Re: pradagirl7

it sounds like this family will support their children and couldn't continue to attend a church that treats one of them differently. good for this stand up family. if more families followed their example, maybe the catholic church would notice the loss of contributions (the only thing they seem to notice) and rethink the stand against the gays.

    Re: KateT

grow up fool the catholic church hates the gays unless a gay wants to become a priest.

  57. 57

She's NOTHING, she's right, she is NOTHING.

She sold her soul to the entertainment media who only sees practicing judaism or gayness the right religion. The film and tv moguls only accept you if you are NOTHING, GAY, OR JEW. Everybody else is made to feel like they have to hide deny or be something they are not.

With a Christian name like Anne unless she changes it to judy or sara, i'm sure she was baptized so maybe there is hope for her yet, if she doesn't kill anybody.

  58. 58

she's right! I won't support a church who killed millions, destroyed civilizations , won't accept birth control and worked hard for YEARS to put women down.

  59. 59

    LOVE you, Anne Hathaway!

  60. 60

    shes amazing.

Re: Island25 – I challenge your assertion. Please cite sources for your assertion that the Catholic church as done more than any other organization to help gay men suffering from AIDS.

  68. 68

I love her. I love my brother and if he were gay, then I would leave my close minded religion too. Religions are nothing but divisive and unbelievable. If there was a god, the Christian/Muslim/Catholic/Jewish/Hindu god is definitely not IT.

  69. 69

Re: Aussieone – That's the most asinine thing I've ever heard! You can't blame the spread of AIDS in Africa on Catholicism! LOL! Just look at a map of world religions, genius. The majority of Africa is either Muslim or Hindu! If the Catholic Church's opposition to condoms was such a huge contributing factor in the spread of AIDS, then it would be RAMPANT and a bigger problem in South America, where the majority of the population IS catholic. Lol!

  70. 70

    I think I love her ..

  71. 71

    Re: buck
Homosexuality is considered sinful. How is not inserting an opinion?

  72. 72

Re: buck – Buck would be one of those type parents who abuses their child for being gay and would reject his adult children for not thinking exactly as he does. He would rather regale you with bon mots of divisive lies and he celebrates hate as if it were the gospel. The voices in his head tell him to come to a gay man's website and deliver anti-gay messages because his behaviour demonstrates his need for self-serving free speech is more important than a communities need to enjoy conventional gossip.

  73. 73

    Good for her.
Everyone needs to figure out what they truly believe. In my opinion, love trumps all.

  74. 74

    Re: MyGuiltyPleasure
Aids rates are higher in nations where chatholisim is the predominate religion.
The Catholic Church is telling people in countries stricken by Aids not to use condoms because they have tiny holes in them through which HIV can pass - potentially exposing thousands of people to risk.
The church is making the claims across four continents despite a widespread scientific consensus that condoms are impermeable to HIV
In 2003, the WHO denounced statements by the Roman Curia's health department, saying: "These incorrect statements about condoms and HIV are dangerous when we are facing a global pandemic which has already killed more than 20 million people, and currently affects at least 42 million."
South American Nations like Brazil have defied the Catholic church and provide condoms for free to there citizens. Since the government of Brazil took these action Hiv/Aids rates have droped dramaticly. 45 million condoms will be provided for free by the government of brazil durring this years carnival.
The Australia government provided masive funding for free condoms to PNG this was when the chruch began making the false claims regarding condoms.
The "faithful" refused to use them.
Use some facts in your argument! Do some research! Think!!

  75. 75

    Re: buck – 65
How much money was spent on prop 8 by churches again ??

  76. 76

good for ever. everyone should be free to believe in what they want, nothing better than a cult telling you what you should and shouldnt do/think.

  77. 77

That's kinda hypocritical considering she had no problem with her church when they were treating homosexuals differently, but then when her brother admitted he was gay, then the tables turned. That's basically like saying "It's okay to treat homosexuals differently, but not if one of them is my brother".

  78. 78

im not religious, as i believe religion has probably killed as many lives as it has saved. but just because i dont agree or believe in it doesnt mean i would persecute or isolate people that do. the churches and religions of the world need to think about the fact that many non-religious people are not opposed to their beliefs, so why should they oppose or oppress others because of theirs? as a straight person, im all for gay rights.

  79. 79

Re: Aussieone – I'd like to correct my first post: the majority of Africa is made up of either Muslim or Indigenous religions. You see, I WAS doing my research when I made that mistake. The map keys shades of lilac and um, orchid (?) were hard to differentiate at first, lol. :) But the fact that Catholicism isn't the predominant religion in even 10% of Africa remains true. Doesn't that fact alone debunk your whole argument? Like I said, if the Catholic religion was truly responsible for the rapid spread of AIDS, South America would have a larger AIDS problem than Africa (even if we excluded Brazil!), because Catholicism is the predominant religion of 85% of the continent. I understand that you're anti-religion and dislike the Catholic church and all, but c'mon. Blaming a religion for the actions or happenings of people who hold completely different faiths is foolish.

  80. 80

She is such a hypocrite. She was a catholic as long as it fit her needs. She changed to another faith until that didn't work. Unfortunatley, that is not the way religion always works. It may not always be conveniant or easy. Its the whole reason it's called, "faith". Perez and others who comment on catholics show their ignorance. Catholics are not anti-gay. We have beliefs just like others. I thinks its funny how gays want to be like everyone else and accepted. However, they judge others because of their opinions and faiths. Hypocrites, Hypocrites, Hypocrites!

  81. 81

Then the numbers for the 10 countries that are predominantly Moslem in Africa and their HIV/AIDS adult infection stands like this:
    Muslims (%)HIV/AIDS rate (%)
    Somalia 100.0 1.0
    Morocco 99.9 0.1
    Algeria 96.7 0.1
    Libya 96.5 0.2
    Senegal 92.1 0.5
    Gambia 88.8 1.6
    Mali 87.0 1.7
    Egypt 86.5 0.1
    Sierra Leone 70.0 7.0
    Sudan 65.0 2.6
    Source G20
Clearly catholicism dogma of no condoms have a negative effect as apposed to those nations where Islam is the predominate religon with no anti condom dogma.

  82. 82

even the dalai lama has talked shit about us

    fuck 'em all i say

  83. 83

I support Anne 100%. I left a religion for it's bigotry and prejudice against gays and women and non believers and have never looked back since. Got tired of hearing hate speech!

  84. 84

Good on Anne. Like her a whole lot now. Religion itself is such a crock, the oldest scam known to mankind. I am like that about my gay son too. Friends of ours are stunned and shocked because I quit the e-mail jokes to them, avoid them now when I see them. They don't understand, but it's because he opened his mouth and indicated his homophic views of gays. They're toast.

  85. 85

what's with the need to define yourself anyway? i'm not a christian but i'm not an atheist as well (cos all they talk about is god anyway) but i wouldn't call myself nothing. i'm just me. i don't need a belief system or a religion to know who i am.

  86. 86

That's awesome. I wish all religions were more tolerant.

  87. 87

That's very sweet :) I'm sure it means so much to her brother.

  88. 88

Religion is a private thing, and I doubt her brother appreciates being the soapbox for her good image. Stand on your own two feet, and stop being so tacky.

  89. 89

  94. 94

    LOL!!! LoL!!! LoL!!!

  95. 95

There was a Christian lady who lived next door to an atheist. Every day, when the lady prayed, the atheist guy could hear her. He thought to himself, "She sure is crazy, praying all the time like that. Doesn't she know there isn't a God?"

Many times while she was praying, he would go to her house and harass her, saying "Lady, why do you pray all the time? Don't you know there is no God?" But she kept on praying.

One day, she ran out of groceries. As usual, she was praying to the Lord explaining her situation and thanking Him for what He was gonna do. As usual, the atheist heard her praying and thought to himself, "Humph! I'll fix her."

He went to the grocery store, bought a whole bunch of groceries, took them to her house, dropped them off on the front porch, rang the door bell and then hid in the bushes to see what she would do. When she opened the door and saw the groceries, she began to praise the Lord with all her heart, jumping, singing and shouting everywhere! The atheist then jumped out of the bushes and told her, "You ol' crazy lady, God didn't buy you those groceries, I bought those groceries!" At hearing this, she broke out and started running down the street, shouting and praising the Lord.

When he finally caught her, he asked what her problem was. She said, "I knew the Lord would provide me with some groceries, but I didn't know he was gonna make the devil pay for them!"

  96. 96

    Three religious truths:

    1. Jews don't recognize Jesus as the Messiah.

    2. Christians don't recognize Mohammed as the Prophet.

    3. Southern Baptists(Mormons, etc. take your pick) don't recognize each other in the liquor store.

  97. 97

  98. 98

quality is better than quantity… obviously she wansn´t a good catholic, PERIOD.
im glad she left being respectful with catholicism beliefs… unlike people like perez!

  99. 99

I don't understand why sexuality and religion are intertwined anyway. Just like I don't understand why religion and politics are intertwined. To me, none of them are related. Except for the bigots who hate Gays make them intertwined.
