Therefore, if you are gay and wish to live in common law with your partner — all the power to you, but it's antithetical to to what religion stands for… Originally, marriage was for procreation, not for love and harmony. The daughter was the property of the father and property was exchanged. In so doing, she was expected to provide property - in the way of children - to her husband.

      Second, as long as the state is involved in "marriage", via benefits, laws giving greater rights to married couples, tax benefits, adoption, etc., then "marriage" is absolutely a CIVIL issue, not a religious issue. If a church doesn't want to marry a gay couple, whatever. As long as they can still go to judge or some other secular official and get married.

      The simplest thing to do is to completely change the paradigm. NO ONE gets married by the state. You go to the state and sign a contract for a civil union, whether you are straight or gay. You want your church to sanctify it, fine.
