It'll Be Like Titanic, Only Longer…And Without The Boat

Okay, it really won't be like Titanic at all except that it will star Kate Winslet and maybe win a lot of awards if it is any good.
HBO has just picked-up a five hour mini-series called Mildred Pierce. Kate will star as Mildred from the adaptation of the classic novel about a proud single mother working to connect with her daughter during the Great Depression in El Lay.
Production is slated to start in New York by April and no other roles have been casted. We imagine this all means we won't see much of this thing until next year.
Sounds like an easy way to get Kate an Emmy, though!

I'm watching the original right now on TCM. They should leave this classic alone. It's one of Joan Crawford's best roles and there is no way Kate Winslet can improve on the original. The best thing about the film noirs of the 1940s is the campy overacting! And who is going to play the bitchy daughter!!! Sounds like a disaster!!!

so let me get this straight, they're remaking a fabulous 2 hr. classic movie and turning it into a 5 hr. mini-series? I love Winslet, but she's no Crawford.
I agree with Jack920. I love the original Mildred Pierce and HBO should not be trying to remake a classic. The story, by itself, is so-so, not all that original so they will probably spice it up with a lot of sex scenes, as they have True Blood. Nothing wrong with sex scenes, but there is also nothing wrong with the film now without them. Don't fix what isn't broke. HBO needs to look for fresh material. If they had any sense they would be adapting the Outlander series by Diana Galbadon. It is not your typical highlander in a kilt story by any means, there is much more to the story than that, intrigue, history galore, action, fascinating characters and a love story that has many layers. HBO would have a field day mining this series. They would have so much material they wouldn't have to add anything to keep the series interesting.

I definitely agree with Dick Gozingya - Miss Lohan is Vida - amoral, demanding, uncaring, boozey and ready for any good time that comes her way, until she gets her stupid little hands on a gun and kills the first man who ever says no to her. But Winslet is all wrong as Mildred - Katey can only play parts in the nude and Pierce is draped in chicken fat stained furs.

When is Holllywood going to learn, you can't remake a classic. This won Joan Crawford the Oscar and put her back on top. Rent the original, it's got a twist like the Usual Suspects and you'll love it.
