He's a smart guy that Leonardo DiCaprio.

While he goes to his fair share of parties, it's safe to say that Leo mostly stays out of the limelight and focuses on his career.

He said recently of River Phoenix who tragically died from a drug overdose in 1993, before Leo's star was officially on the rise:

"When I was eighteen, River Phoenix was far and away my hero. Think of all those early great performances — My Own Private Idaho. Stand by Me. I always wanted to meet him. One night, I was at this Halloween party, and he passed me. He was beyond pale — he looked white. Before I got a chance to say hello, he was gone, driving off to the Viper Room, where he fell over and died.

That's a lesson."

It certainly is and one that many young stars with great potential don't seem to learn! We're looking at you, Lohan!

Lohan in a league with Phoenix? Who would give shit if Lindsay left this earth? River on the other hand was a huge loss, along the lines of Heath Ledger.

Leo has so much talent and so much class!

Show some compassion for a young woman who clearly is struggling. Stop judging, and start showing some love. Clearly this woman is in pain, and you are only making it worse through your cruel reporting.

    copy and paste much?

    -
River seemed a nice enough kid but he was not a particularly good actor.

Wow, I just got the shivers reading that. One minute you're alive and the next, in a blink of an eye you're gone. I can see where Leo is coming from, as far as I know Phoenix was an awesome actor, although I haven't watched any of his films. Such a tragic loss

Thats so sad. River was a great talent. I really, really hope Lindsay gets some help. I just wish there was someone that would just take her away from hollywood and help her get better :(

  9. 9

River was a superb actor, one of the best in his time! It is a shame that he passed away. If he had remained alive he would have become the leading male actor of Hollywood.

Thank God we still have his brother! That family has the acting gene embedded in their DNA!

Re: alfabravo – please go see My Own Private Idaho before you say that. The man was talented. He had soo mch potential

  11. 11

What a wise statement, coming from someone who hasn't had to go through the school of hard knocks. I see ya in a whole new light Leonardo. Bravo!

  12. 12

Fucking please. DiCaprio has SO done his fair share of drugs and still does. There is probably less than 3% of Hollywood who hasn't dabbled in drugs. Leo ain't one of them. He is a known coke head at the industry parties. Who the fuck is he kidding.

Seen it. Big stretch, he was likely gay anyway.

Ever seen 'A Night in The Life of Jimmy Reardon"? - 'nuf said.

    awwww, rip river phoenix.
I'm still so inlove with him.

  15. 15

Your tweets to Lindsay tell the real story how you gloated about the Vienna Ball thing. Remember how her latest fuckup makes your job sooo much easier??? Why even act the least bit concerned when her untimely death will get so many more hits for your site? You are no better than a vulture poised to feed off her carcass.

    thats such a sad story

    i love leo…..

my NEW BF and i watched that revolution road or whatever it was with him and kate winslet and we laughed so hard saying thats the titanic lovers 10 years on fighting like hell and punching the car

leo ur a hollywood megastar xxxxxx

  17. 17

Might want to add - died of a drug overdose. And add - because he was stupid and careless. Those who were close to him and loved him lost a lot because he was careless and stupid

  18. 18

    whoa! that is crazy…

  19. 19

River pheonix was a tragedy we all loved his work and it
such a huge loss, he was great and his movies will always be
    remmbered.

  20. 20

Internet cockroach Perez Hilton somehow finds great joy in constantly pushing Lindsay's buttons, gloating every time she screws up, deliberately trying to instigate trouble with her — all things that motivate addicts to use and recovering addicts to relapse.
    .
Mark my words: when he succeeds at what he seems to be trying to do, his post will be "we knew this would happen!!! sad sad!!! our hearts go out to Lindsay's family and friends at this terrible time." This, of course will be as sincere as all his other 'condolences' posts. Not sincere at all.

  21. 21

Damn another Delicious Man on your site tonight :( ! Such a tragedy I wish that he would have never even left the world that terrible night! :( Rip River YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MISSED !

Re: Blinky – Leo has class! ? Do you know what he does in his spare time! Wow. LMAO!

  23. 23

Re: Novel1 – yep, everyone makes it sound like he died because of some tragic accident like he got hit by a car. not to be harsh but the bottom line is that he CHOSE to do drugs. he CHOSE the life he led. what should be celebrated are the people who DONT do drugs and do not make bad decisions.

  24. 24

Love Leo he seems like a great guy and of course very talented. And sigh River Phoenix was hugely talented and one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen on film. It's still such a shame 17 years after his death. What a waste.

  25. 25

I literally just learned about River Pheonix about a week ago. Aside from playing the young Indiana Jones (I didn't even know that was him), I've never seen his work - and yet watching his interviews he touched me. What strikes me the most is his innate ability to understand others and I think that is why he was such a good actor. It seems his life experience had some troubled times whether that was sexually or otherwise it was clear he could identify with the characters and give them a voice because he could feel for them personally and this realness is conveyed on screen. I can see that is why people loved him so much - because he could love others for who they were/are and it was easy to give that back to him. I truely believe he acted because he loved the skill - he did not come across to me as someone who hungered for the fame or the money. It is clear he had a pure heart. He really wanted to make a difference and I think had he lived longer he would have advocated and made enormous strides in a wide range of human rights issues.

  26. 26

notice: perez called lohan a young star with great potential!
    what she is/was/will be again?
leo should talk about this story with lindsay …

  27. 27

Do you mean if Lindsay Lohan sees Leonardo DiCaprio at a halloween party she say hello to him because this could happen to her too or do you mean Lindsay Lohan is a young star with great potential or do you mean Lindsay Lohan is going to die of drugs in front of some club or other in Hollywood? You really don't make things easy to read. You should take some more school classes.

  28. 28

Leo said that years ago too…just a rehash of an old story. I still love River Phoenix & think it was such a huge loss. He was so beautiful and acted well in Stand By Me, Idaho…in his later films you could see that he was drugged out sometimes & as much as I loved and admired him, I was totally pissed off with him for doing drugs and OD'ing. He tried to steer clear of LA/Hollywood…he called it the "dirty town" because he got in trouble when he was there. RIP Rio xx

  29. 29

I love Leo but he has to know how limited his career would be if River was still alive today - give proper props yo.

  30. Dr. M says – reply to this

While River was convulsing and dying on the sidewalk Christina Applegate and her friends were making fun of him. I know she was young. She really wishes that no one would remember - but I do.
    -
My point is - "Have some compassion Perez - Karma is a bitch".
    -
    Peace
    Dr. M

  31. 31

What you have to understand about River, is that his childhood was so closed off to the world. So as an adult he was very insecure and very naive. Although he loved others and loved to give a helping hand. He didn't like this life. He had a hard time coping with its faults. And being involved in the Hollywood scene and being around others who were doing the exact same drugs as he was…it was proably hard to say no. He did have people telling him no more but he was a very stubbourn person.

So before you go and judge someone for bad descions you should understand them as a human being. Things happen for a reason. This was River's fate. He is safer where he is now. And Perez is just worried about Lindsay and it would be tragic is something did happen.

  32. 32

I remember when River died… so many wonderful celebrities, musicians and artists taken from us for drugs. Who the FUCK cares about LiLo?

  33. 33

Re: Dr. M – is that true? how do u know that?? Christina Applegate did seem like a big bitch back in the day, abandoning Brad Pitt at a party.

  34. 34

Thats REALLY sad. You think of events like this and when your so close to doing something amazing and then you don't get to and then something horrible happens and you'll never get that chance again. I mean, it doesn't only include people dying and not getting a chance to get to know them, but anything. This story is just "one of those things." Its crazy that Leo was one of the people that saw River on his last night alive.

  35. 35

River's death will forever be etched in my mind. It truly affected me cause I looked up to him. He was like perfection to me and that was of course wrong to place him on that pedestal. I often think which roles he'd be playing now and yes, a lot of them would probably be the ones that Leonardo is offered.

  36. 36

He was soooo talented!!! What a waste!!

  37. 37

    Rest in peace, River.
Your acting talent was awesome ..

  38. 38

god i love him more and more as he gets older. sooo jealous of bar! i couldnt stand him back in the titanic and man in the iron mask days, but the departed? blood diamond? even the beach! LOVE LEO for being an environmentalist, for being scorcese's inspiration, and for getting soo much finer as he gets older!
