At least, according to Southwest Airlines!
Director Kevin Smith was kicked off a flight leaving Oakland airport because they deemed him a safety risk and asked him to leave the flight. The worst part was that he was already seated and buckled in!
He took to his Twitter to explain.
"I broke no regulation, offered no 'safety risk,' (what, was I gonna roll on a fellow passenger?)," he Tweeted. "I'm way fat… But I'm not THERE just yet."
The airline eventually apologized and put him on another flight with $100 voucher for his trouble, but Smith wasn't having it!
"Dear @SouthwestAir, I'm on another one of your planes, safely seated & buckled-in again, waiting to be dragged off in front of the normies," he continued to Tweet. "Look how fat I am on your plane! Quick! Throw me off!"
Southwest even sent him some apologetic Tweets after they saw all the support he received on Twitter for his embarrassing inconvenience.
Ugh! Poor guy! That's enough to make you wanna eat!

I feel sorry for the guy but since I travel regularly for work, I can honestly say that it is even more uncomfortable for the person seated next to them. No matter what they do, especially if they are wayyyy overweight, the person seated next to them gets squashed. Since their body does not fit in the assigned seat, they almost always want to put up the armrest that separates it to the next seat (sometimes, they don't even have the courtesy to ask the person they are seated next to). If it is a male passenger (I'm female), I always have to use my arm to block my body (especially my chest), because guaranteed, unless they sit there without the slightest of movements, my breast or part of my body is always getting jabbed. You don't want to be rude but it is unfair that you are the one that is uncomfortable while they take a portion of the seat that you paid for.
OH MY GOD… I cannot believe that.. he's not skinny, but for god's sake, he's definitely not obese!!! I've seen people so fat on planes that they pour over into my seat… That's kind of lame.

Other than that it sucks to be overweight, but at the same time its a huge health risk that you can pay dearly for later in life they should promote healthy living, but they don't look at the crap they serve on planes and in airports if they don't want fat people on their planes maybe they shouldn't be selling junk food.
The last time I was on an airplane a fat guy sat next to me. He was jammed in the seat and jammed against me the whole time. Then he fell asleep and had the most God awful snoring coming from his fat throat. I was kind of hoping I'd get sick on the flight just so I could throw up on his fat stinking ass.

In Australia an airline asked a large person to by two tickets she complained and took them to court now she flies for free for life! Same thing happened in Canada.

One thing every pilot does before takeoff is too calculate the weight of the plane. In America, the average weight assigned to each individual is 195 pounds. He must have tipped them over the limit.
There has been one plane crash in America due to overload This is when airlines were still using 175 pounds. It was after this crash that the FAA increased it to 195.

I think Southwest owes him a lot more than a $100 Voucher and an apology, Southwest is the last airline I would consider buying a ticket from right now and yes I’m telling all my friends of every size to take their business elsewhere. They need to get ready to see their ticket sales go down and hopefully another airline will learn from their mistake and let people of size know they are actually welcome to travel on their airline without being in fear of being humiliated and discriminated against while travelling. In the Australian and Canadian cases the true reason for telling the larger folk to pay for a second seat was becuase the planes where carrying more frieght and it was easier and better for the airlines bottom line to just target the biggest person on the plane then to move the frieght to another flight.
The question is, how broke is Kevin that he needs to fly Southwest Airlines?
People over 240 lbs, should automatically be required to buy a second seat ticket!
Airlines calculate their passenger flight weight at 195 lbs per person, anyone who is more than 20% over that should have to pay.
P.S.: Kicking someone off the plane for being over weight is unacceptable.

That's not the *whole* story Mario. He originally bought 2 seats (because he knows he needs to). Then he tried to fly standby on an earlier flight, and they couldn't get two seats together for him. He needs adjacent seats, and sooner or later, flying standby will inevitably result in this situation. Shouldn't a famous actor worth millions be flying First Class anyway?!?

It is very uncomfortable to have fat creeping underneath the armrest and pressing into you, like being suffocated from the side. And then you have to deal with their upper bodies coming over the arm rest up top. These fatties make airline fuel costs higher and that means higher ticket prices, which normal sized people have to pay for.

I just spent the last hour listening to Kevin Smith's SModcast. I'll never get that hour of my life back. Heard his side, ok…WHAT DO YOU WANT NOW? Jesus. He recommends not flying Southwest, perfect! Maybe it will bring the fares down even more! Less money beening spent on extra fuel. The whole SModcast was the F-word. Not since Bennifer has he had this much free publicity before a movie coming out!
I love the people going off and bitching about "GAWD so gross fatties overflowing all over their seat next to me ugh!" How about following the facts, kids. Smith is fat, but he says he fits fine with the armrests down and doesn't need any special extender for the seat belt. That's Southwest's OWN GUIDELINE for determining whether someone should be required to buy another seat. And kicking him off for being "too fat" was just idiotic. This is clearly a case of an over-zealous flight crew with a hatred of fatties. While they violated Southwest's guidelines for determining who's too heavy, it's obvious the airline's policies and culture encourage this type of attitude.

The seats are uncomfortable for most people - the airlines should make the seats more comfortable for all their passengers. Fat people should not have to pay more - this will lead to all kinds of discrimination. Business won't hire fat people because they won't want to pay extra for business trips.

He's really not that rich. Most of his films were either independently financed or through Miramax - a studio that mostly did low-budget artsy stuff. There's not a whole lot of dough in that either way. I think he makes most of his money from speaking engagements.

I would hate be be sittting next to him on a flight. He knows the airline's policy and when he changed his flight to one where he had only one seat, he broke that policy. They have a right to enforce it.

You still aren't paying attention to what he said. He said he's flown many times before in a single seat with both armrests down. He also does not need the extender thingy for his seat belt. That means he doesn't technically violate Southwest's fatty policy. He said on his podcast that he often buys two or more seats because Southwest is so cheap that if he wants to bring his wife or someone else he has the seats paid for. When he got on an earlier flight as standby, he was only allotted one seat. The Southwest agents and flight crew assumed that because he had reserved two seats and was flying alone, it must be because of his weight.
If a passenger is so big they need two seats, then the airline should only ask for a surcharge for the extra space and not double the price of their ticket for two seats. It's possible that no two passengers paid the same price anyway, and if a large person is paying a higher tariff than a last minute Expedia ticket holder (which are bargain basement fares), the large person could end up paying three and four times more than the lowest fareholder, which isn't very fair.

I agree that hugely overweight passengers should be charged more for airplane tickets (that would resolve the issue of the plane being off-balance, if a large person is required to pay for two seats). BUT, as big as Kevin Smith is, he's not big enough to justify the behavior of the airline towards him. What a weird situation! I don't feel too badly for him, though, because he's pretty damn rich.
