      Sorry folks. Not only is Gaga a real talent she is considered by most in the industry to be "Madonna on steroids" or "Madonna with talent". Not only can she write on her own material, she can sing (live too!), and is a true visionary. She does not need the stupid comparisons to Madonna! The only similarity is that both women are ambitous. In fact Gaga's idol is none other than the amazing Grace Jones and David Bowie, who Madonna owes a great deal of respect to but would never acknowledge them. I respect Madonna as a master of reinvention, but she also does this by ripping off other artists visions and taking their flame (think Bjork, Kylie, etc.). My only wish is that Gaga does not kiss this woman (Madonna) and pay her to much homage because Madonna is on the prowl for new material (for her new label and album) and will suck the life out this girls career (Gaga) if she is not careful. Beware of Madge, Gaga, she's old, desperate and hungry and will ravage you (she's done it to many others before). Watch the Madtv parody of Britney and Madonna. They joke about it but there's much truth behind the clip.

      I like GaGa a lot and think she’s the “It” pop princess (along with Brit Brit) but neither will ever become the new Madonna…she’s truly the Queen of Pop and a creative genius like MJ. They are once in a lifetime entertainers and did stuff and made music career wise when nobody else was willing to do it. Madonna in the early 1990s wrote about topics so controversial people today would still be scared to touch. GaGa definitely took a lot from Madonna; the importance of image, making catchy dance-pop, creative music videos and marketing the most important part that she hasn’t recognized is the meaning of the songs themselves. Sure Madonna has a lot of carefree dance songs but there are so many with deeper meaning; Empowerment, Sexual Desire, Religion and Spirituality, Domestic Abuse, Family drama, race, AIDs epidemic, love etc with lyrics that truly mean something and each Madonna album sounds completely different. I can’t think of another artist that is defined but eras and completely different sounds like Madonna has. GaGa has potential but Madonna is a Queen.

Because people have been writing songs on those topics you listed about 20-30 years before Madonna decided she wanted to do it because everyone at that time (late 80s/early 90s) was doing the same (Tracy Chapman, Tori Amos, Suzanne Vega, Janet Jackson, Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs). Listen to some old Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Yoko Ono (no, that's not a typo), Loretta Lynn, Bob Marley, Billie Holiday, Kate Bush, the Supremes, Janis Ian, Heart, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joan Baez, Melanie, Helen Reddy, Donna Summer, Bronski Beat, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Queen, Public Enemy, Rod Stewart, The Staple Singers, etc and you can find songs about empowerment, homosexuality, sexuality in general, racism, spirituality, etc. Even Cher sang about racism in the 70s with "Half Breed" and "Gypsies Tramps & Thieves" (and if your response is, "well, she didn't write those songs"–no, she didn't but she had the balls to record them when everyone turned them down or wouldn't touch them). And I wouldn't say people are scared to touch those topics today (Pink? Christina?).

      You can argue over and over again that people have done stuff before or after but the point is the BIGGEST female star in the world talked about those topics. I can think of 3 songs in particular that are extremely deep: “In this Life” off the Erotica album was about losing friends to AIDS during the pandemic….who else from that time period of that level of fame was that vocal? Sure artists are today but in the 80’s when it could have been career suicide and into the early 90’s Madonna was the leading celebrity figure and spokes person for safe sex and AIDS awareness. Like a Prayer got the Vatican to condemn her, what other celebrity has had that. Express Yourself came out at the same time or before the songs/artists you claim came out at the same time. And what about Papa Don’t Preach” (abortion) “Till Death Do Us Part” (domestic abuse) or even Deeper and Deeper (falling for the same sex), Ray of Light (which is practically a spiritual revival)….She took risks when it mattered. I like most of the artists you mentioned but the point is Madonna has always been the most visible, vocal and put those topics into excellent songs. Madonna has always stood up for people and has made her career from challenging the status quo when it should be challenged. GaGa, Britney, Rihanna and all the others are just following the path that Madonna, MJ and Prince made for them.

      Lady Gaga has one thing in common with Madonna: they're both the only artists in the past 3 decades who, regardless of their specific talents, marked a turning point in pop music with a huge cultural impact. There something about both artists that is just inexplicable: something that makes them different, special and unique. I welcome Lady Gaga as true fresh air in a very flat and prefabricated musical enviroment. It's so good to have someone coming up and just doing her thing the way she feels like, playing the songs she wants and performing how she feels it better suits her. It's so natural and spontaneous. i guess that's the trick: people just feel them very close and real, they see that they own the characters that they play.

      Well, I don't know how old you are, but I'm old enough (not that old) to remember the Madonna phenomenon in the 80s. If she so much sneezed, it made headline news. So of course when Madonna gets banned by the Vatican, it's a BIG thing (even though Sinead O'Connor pretty much told them to f*** off). Songs get banned by MTV, the BBC, Southern radio stations, etc. all the time, and have been since the history of pop music, sometimes by (what we would think are) the least offensive songs, but the controversy surrounding them weren't all that newsworthy and are now just footnotes in history–something that makes for good trivia. I can remember the whole Tipper Gore hearings and how songs like "Sugar Walls" by Sheena Easton, "Darling Nikki" by Prince, and "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper were considered controversial, but who remembers that now? Everyone remembers what Madonna has done, even though EROTICA was her FIRST album to carry a warning sticker long after CDs been labeled with those. Unless you're a die hard Helen Reddy or Eurythmics fan, no one's going to really remember women empowerment songs like "I am Woman" by Helen Reddy or "Sisters are Doing it For Themselves" by Eurythmics/Aretha, but everyone knows "Express Yourself." Madonna gets credit for things because she's more popular, and people have a better recollection of her controversies.

      As far as Madonna touching on the AIDS crisis, I do remember a few artists were involved in helping out with the AIDS crisis at a time when it was still kind of taboo to mention it. Dionne Warwick comes to mind (although I heard she was shady with the money she raised), as well as Lisa Stansfield, Jody Watley, KD Lang, Debbie Harry, George Michael, to name a few . My memory is shot to hell, so I can't recall a whole lot of songs that dealt with the topic back then, but songs like "Blood Makes Noise" by Suzanne Vega and "One" by U2 are some examples.
      What you might not know is Madonna got a lot of flack from the gay community in the early 90s, because some gay activists felt at that time as a gay icon she wasn't doing enough for the community. It was then she started getting more involved and talking about it more openly (even outing her own brother). I'm not trying to diminish her accomplishments, even though I'm not a big fan of her as a person. I'm just trying to shed some light on her and some other unsung heroes, and an era that was such a magnificent time that seemed like eons ago.

      Madonna has been successful due to her ambition, intelligence, and self-centered, devil-may-care, winner take all attitude to rise to the top. Both Gaga and Madonna are of Italian descent, both seem intelligent, and I would say that the underlying timbre of their voices resemble each other. Madonna is a mediocre singer and an amazing performer, with an undeniable work ethic and one of the most competitive instincts I have ever witnessed. She has clawed her way to the top, and she has shown that her ability to use her mental prowess to manipulate the media and the world at large has been highly successful. Gaga isn't there yet, though I do like her music, and I would agree that comparisons at this stage are a bit premature.

      To be honest, I rather have her being compared to madonna…then britney spears. At least if you strip her away from all of her theatrics, and her crazy outfits, you still have a girl with a great voice, and can actually play a musical instrument.

      Geez, it's not like shes running around saying "I'm gonna be the next Madonna." Madonna and others influenced her, that's nothing new. Everybody always has an inspiration.

      This woman is incredibly smart. She takes the high road every time someone compares her to this artist or that. She shows an enormous degree of humility. In a world so overblown by blowhards she's a breath of fresh air to mix some metaphors there. She's making the the right steps so far as I can tell. Let's see how long the public likes her music.
