1/3 of Americans don't use a computer!
It's true, according to a survey by the Nation Telecommunications & Information Administration.
The survey concluded that the majority of the people within this one third were either poor, seniors, and/or minorities and the reason for not having Internet ranged from not really needing it to the $$$ factor.

Nope. Not only is the internet my favorite form of entertainment, it's also an invaluable tool. I don't know how I would have survived college without it, and now I use it all the time to look up ideas and find materials for student teaching. So no, I couldn't live without the internet.

Having a computer and paying for internet access is very expensive. So yes, I can see how some have to do without. But I can't imagine. I look up recipes, keep in touch with out of state/country family friends and that saves on the long distance bill. I use it daily to look up something of some value to me.
Elderly I can understand for sure. It's too difficult for my 80 year old Mom. She has a computer however to play games.

I guess its because they are not really informed of what 'the internet thing' is about and get scared by the idea of something unknown…I have a friend who seemed very intimidated when he was in front of my online computer for the 1st time around 1998, and now 12 years later he is basically an internet addict.

Re: busiest bee – yeah, i'm positive that the reason so many people in the united states don't use the internet or have internet access is because there are many more people living in poverty in this country than we pay mind. internet privileges ARE expensive. and while i can understand why you might think those who don't use it are elderly (certainly because this is a reasonable assumption), it makes no sense to assume that someone can't use the internet because they are blind…technology DOES accommodate the visually impaired.
It's called the Digital Gap… and it's a serious problem, considering so much that is required of us is on the internet. There are incredible programs in place that reach out to these communities by providing a free laptop or netbook. With our unemployment rate being so high and most companies no longer taking paper applications or mailed resumes, no wonder it is so difficult to find a job for many of these people!
Believe this or not, there was a time, and not that long ago, when there was no internet - or microwave ovens, cell phones, remote controls, caller ID, call waiting or Tivo - and we all managed just fine!
Seriously? I don't think that the elderly and the homeless really make up 33% of the population.
As for everyone else, get the fuck out of 1993 and come to the real world, where we have cell phones, iPods and the internet.

Actually, yes. My cell phone went a 7 months ago and cable 2 months ago. Cordless phones went 2 weeks ago and replaced with old fashioned rotaries. Internet is next. I have a goal to return to the good times simplicity of the 70's I was raised in. And I'm lovin' it so far…but I know it's not for everyone.
And 80% are not down with the grammars.

My mom doesn't use internet. The only reason I do is because I had to buy a computer for school and we have internet connection in our dorms… It's really not that hard to go without.
Yeah, I can definitely live without the internet. I often take sabbaticals from logging online. I get the same icky feeling from browsing the 'net too much as I do from watching too much crappy, "reality" TV; it rots your brain and brings out the social retard in many. However, it's a great tool for up-to-the minute news, work, research, homework, and provides alternative sources of news other than the biased drivel we see on TV.

I bought my mom a used laptop and tried to help her use it. She could have had a lot of fun looking up the movie stars and singers that she loves, connecting with old friends, and listening to music. For various reasons, it didn't work out, but I tried. Even my elderly next-door neighbor is on the Internet, and I've e-mailed her XD
