Best Original Song Oscar Nominees Won't Perform!

| Filed under: Music MinuteFilm FlickersAwardz

That's a real break with tradition!

The Academy Awards' executive producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic have told the nominated artists for Best Original Song that they won't be performing during the awards which has them all a bit disgruntled!

The music from the songs will instead be played along with footage from each movie.

The five nominated songs include two from The Princess and The Frog, "Almost There" and "Down In New Orleans", "Loin de Paname" from Paris 36, "Take It All" from Nine and "The Weary Kind" from Crazy Heart.

The producers likely nixed the performances to put more focus on the TEN Best Picture nominees throughout the night, but is that fair to the artists who were looking forward to getting their moments onstage?

What do U think?

Better performed than played. Too many best picture nominees. Might as well just have one show for that.

  2. 2

Well that is really stupid. One of the highlights of the Oscars is getting to watch live performances of the best song nominations. Why don't they just cut some of the boring awards out of the show like best documentary and animated short? that's what makes the show run way to long!

  3. 3

it's like showing the entire videos for the best record grammy.

  4. 4

One of the hallmarks of the Oscars is that we get to hear the Original Song nominees. The Globes and the Critics Choice awards give out awards for Original Song, but you don't get to see them performed. Shankman and the other guy are really effin' up this Oscar telecast.

It's crap that they do this. Think of best songs that made Top 40 history, such as Streisand's Evergreen from A Star Is Born or Carly Simon's Let The River Run from Working Girl.

well, It's always been bulshit anyways, I remember when they didn't let Jorge Drexler perform his own song for Motorcycle Diaries and decided to put Antonio Banderas instead as the singer! WTF??? it was just so awful and disrespectful….

i completely agree that the nominees for best song performing is a huge part of the oscars!

It's pretty obvious that this year NONE of the nominated songs are well known, let alone hits…. or even performed by anyone popular, for that matter. I think that's the REAL reason they are sitting this year out.

Maybe they don't want to pay them performance fees. They just want their songs to sell their movies.

Actually, I do like it better! I have been embarrassed for years about all the hokey nonsense that passes for entertainment at the Oscars. It isn't a variety show after all! All the musical crap is…crap. Playing the music along with footage from the movie gives it context and makes people appreciate how the song works for the movie it was in.I think the song and dance stuff should all get dumped. I watched the British Academy Awards (BAFTAs) and the show lasts two hours, it's fun, and it moves right along, with no musical comedy acts just a really classy M.C. and a nice set. No costume changes or anything!

It doesn't matter. The Oscars jumped the shark years ago anyway. When those dolts actually handed an Academy Award to John Wayne for one of the worst screen performances of all time, it all ceased to mean anything.

  12. 12

anything to make it less boring and shorter.

  13. 13

That is one of the highlights of the show. Especially when there are a few good tunes. Last years performance was good. So I guess that the songs this year most suck. I bet if Bruce Springsteen or U2 had songs in movies this year and they were nominated then they would want them to perform.

  14. 14

The performances are by far the best part of the Oscars. It's always nice to have a few musicians break up the boredom of watching actors congratulate each other. What a shame.

  15. 15

The song performances at the Oscars have been boring the last few years, so I won't miss them.

  16. 16

I enjoy the Best Original Song part. Heck it's the best part. But why 10 Best Pictures? I hope they pull this off alright.

  17. 17

This is BULLSHIT!! The Academy is taking away all the traditions! It won't be the Oscars anymore! They're trying to turn it into the TEEN CHOICE AWARDS or some RUBBISH like that!

  18. 18

That kinda sucks for the nominees! But then again, unless it's Beyonce, Madonna or someone like Bono or Bjork then they would gladly have them sing the theme song.

  19. 19

Adam knows what he is doing. Im sure it is all very thought out. The oscars r going to be amazing with his energy in it!

Kayla from So You Think You Can Dance…is performing at the Oscars

That sucks. That is favorite part of the Oscars. I was really looking forward to seeing Ryan Bingham. I hope he wins.

To me this does't even seem like a real oscar year. :( It's a mess….

Disney hasn't won in the best song category in years and years. 2 yrs ago, enchanted had 3 songs nominated for best song, but the song from the irish movie 'once' won instead. i guess they thought it wasn't worth the money/burden, because there's so much crazy heart hype that it will probably win in that category.

Good! I hated that part anyway. Most of the time it was those cheesy Disney songs.
