British Cinemas Threaten Alice!

Fighting fire with fire!
British cinemas Odeon, Vue and Cineworld are threatening to boycott the upcoming Alice in Wonderland if they don't keep the standard interval of 17 weeks from screens to DVD.
Disney wants to reduce the interval to 12 weeks to tap into the home video market quicker, but the movie theaters obviously want to make more money so they might scrap showing the film altogether!
Insiders close to the situation believe that it's only a matter of time before the window between cinema and DVD becomes smaller and that is simply because films rarely stay in the theaters longer than six weeks anyway — eight weeks if it's a blockbuster.
We wonder who will win?
Disney is a pretty big conglomerate that we probably wouldn't want to mess with, but the cinemas could be holding the upper hand as well!
What do U think?

12 weeks is enough for any movie.
yeah they do the same thing in Holland.. pretty lame if you ask me.. nobody ever goes to these movies here after the first few weeks anyways. theatre's are just being greedy. If people get enough of this crap, and start downloading the thing from the net, neither of them will be making money. dumbasses.
nooooooo ive been excited about this for weeks i love the disney classics and the remake makes it more real as it isnt cartoon-though i love the classics
It kind of makes sense. 12 weeks is nothing really…..it might encourage people not to go to the cinema. Yes i agree cinemas these days are SO expensive. But still, I love going!
As if those 5 weeks are going to matter. How stupid are they. So they're threatening to NOT show the movie at all, potentially losing a lot of money, b/c they're worried about losing money… Uh… what?
Several European cinema chains are doing the same thing, even some cinema's in the US. Even though it sucks because I really want to see this movie, they have a point. There are written rules and agreements about when to release the dvd and Disney thinks these rules don't apply to them. I think it's good these cinemas are putting their foot down.
I do not go to the theaters that much anymore, Why bother if they are out on video in a few months.
Maybe if they stopped charging £10 a ticket, more people would go to the cinema and when they add on the extra £5 for 3D do they still wonder why they are loosing business, I hope disney beat the greedy b*stards.
It's $10.75 for a movie ticket here in Arizona, USA. The cinemas really need to stop being so greedy and lower their prices. That's where they will make more money, not worrying about those 5 weeks. Most people that will see the movie have already seen it by then.
So instead of getting the dregs, the cinemas will forgo any revenue altogether. Seems like either blatant stupidity or idle threats.
w.e. cineworld know they would loose far to much money if they didnt put Alice In Wonderland on the big screen.
Go ask Alice!!!!!!!!
Most people who really want to see a movie in the theater go to see it within the first 3 weeks. I'm all for shortening the length of time from cinema to DVD since I rarely go to the movies. If I do go it's to the first showing of the day for $5. Anytime after that the prices are outrageous….here in Houston, TX its' $5 for the first show of the day, $6.75 after that, $8.75 after 6 pm, $9.25 Fri/Sat after 6, XD is $12.00, XD Real 3d is $14.00 and if not in XD the 3D is $3.00 above regular ticket price. Quite frankly, I'd rather wait the couple of days (sometimes a week or so) to download and watch at home.
Heck, if Disney really wanted to push it they could. Enough people want to see this movie badly that if they released straight to DVD (to purchase) and not release to rent (for a few weeks) they could make a TON.
This is something that may be implemented all over - not just this movie and not just disney. And it's 13 1/2 weeks - not 12. The NORM is 16, not 17 weeks. So, it's only cutting it short by 2 1/2 weeks. Works for me - faster dvd releases.
I think dvds should come out sooner. That's why they lose money to bootlegging; they need to put out the product within about 6 weeks really.
I think that this story is about a week old, Keep up perez.
no!! where will i go see it if cineworld, odeon AND vue all refuse to show it? utter shambles.
Re: smiley010992 – - which cinema are you going to?!!!! my closest one charges about £5-6 and about £9 for 3-D
who cares - i rarely never go to the cinema - i have pay tv
WHAT!? nooooo dont do it! They're practically the only cinemas in the UK! Well around me anyway ):
Re: smiley010992 –
You should seriously switch cinemas… the most I pay for a ticket is £9 and that's for IMAX 3d….. for a normal showing it's £6 max! I pay £2.50 on a wednesday
No, No, No!!! My friends and I were going to see this in The Ve opening week -please don't do this!!
Alice? Alice? Who the xxxx is Alice? Disney has said that Cineworld are now playing it.
