The New And Improved Coney Island

New York City has revealed its plan for a new amusement park in Coney Island scheduled to open this May.
Luna Park at Coney Island will have 19 rides including two roller coasters, a human slingshot and go-karts.
"Coney Island remains one of the most known and beloved neighborhoods around the world," said Mayor Bloomberg. "But for decades its famed amusement park has just dwindled to just a tiny fraction of what it once was. This summer, we're reversing the trend."
Luna Park is part of NYC's Coney Island Revitalization Plan which is hoping to create jobs while preserving and growing the historic area.
Will U be checking out the new amusement park this summer?

Hmmm…could this be, perhaps, the new scenery for some season 2 of fist-pumping with Snooki & Co?

It won't open until, 2011!!!! But the rides planned seem pretty cool, and are in keeping with the vintage feel of the place.
Rollercoasters rule!!!!! I'll be going!!!!
I've lived in Brooklyn my whole life, and I don't even want to go to Coney Island. It has gone downhill. I don't think anything will save it.
Bloomberg is a dick (I can say that bc he's my mayor) but this plan might work. I still hate his ass though lmfao I might go there just to check it out.
Wonderful news. NY and its 8 million people deserve a top notch amusement park. this will be a good start.
You betcha!!!
Luna Park was the name of part of Coney Island from the turn of the last century that was so famous that many other amusement parks around the world are known just as Luna Park after the original in NYC. The original was destroyed in a fire in the early 1940's so this is a great harkening back to the past to ensure a good and awesome future for the true americana landmark that is the entirety of coney island.
I'm a Brooklynite with family in Coney Island, so I'll def be checking this out. I look forward to seeing what they do with the area.
I think they still have some of the old bathhouses left. I would love to see this. It's too bad the original burned, tho it wouldn't have survived intact anyway. K, I'm not making sense, not awake yet. Wish they hadn't torn down that last coaster a few years ago, what was it? Thunderbolt? The one with the house underneath it.
perhaps i should since ive lived on long island my whole life and have been to magic mountain in california more times than this place..
Re: Andy27 – sounds like a great idea. they shoulda considered it before jumping to south beach
unfortunately coney island sits in the middle of the ghetto. for real, ghetto projects. the police presence is HUGE with tons of undercovers, but it's not a nice area unless you enjoy 15 year olds pushing strollers while fighting with their babydaddy and their cornrows..
Come one, come all!
Stop by the sideshow and Freak Bar for a drink… perhaps a burlesque show!!!
Lots of love to those work with such commitment & passion for NYC…
YOU LUNA GUYS ROCK!
I live in BK and can't wait to see the new Coney. Congrats all around!
This is such exciting news!!! Hey, just a heads-up that Coney Island Craft Lagers(R) (handcrafted by Shmaltz Brewing Company) is putting out a special summer release called Coney Island Luna Lager(TM).
Luna Lager(TM) commemorates the launch of the new Luna Park 2010, and brings to life a delicious newcomer to their award-winning craft lager lineup for the community to enjoy this summer at America's Playground.
Proceeds from Coney Island Craft Lagers(R) also continue to help Coney Island USA, a 501(c)(3) Arts Non-Profit fulfill its mission to defend the honor of lost forms of American popular culture in Brooklyn's historic Coney Island neighborhood. Coney Island Luna Lager(TM) will be available this summer throughout New York City in 22 oz. bottles and a very limited supply of kegs at specialty shops and select bars.
