An anti-smoking campaign in France has just released a series of posters advocating the end of teenagers smoking cigarettes. As we're sure you've notice, the ads liken the act of "sexual submission" to that of inhaling tar. Since we know most of you don't read French, the punchline slogan on these ads reads: "Smoking means being a slave to tobacco."
Naturally, people are pissed, calling the ads "inappropriate" and "counterproductive," but the head of the Non-Smoker' Rights Association, Remi Parola, says the ads were a necessary step to reaching out to the youth demographic:
"We noticed that the traditional anti-smoking campaigns no longer got across amongst the youth. We thus had to use another way in order to raise awareness…We were surprised by the extent of the media buzz. But it's above all a message of public health that got across."
Certainly got our attention, but is it effective?

How is this any different than cigarette ads from previous years that make it appear to be sexy? I'm sure that plenty of teens view oral sex as a pleasurable experience, and now cigarettes are connected to that reaction.

I'm French, and here it's clearly in reference with a fellatio, not at all religious! But even if we're more permissive than you guys upon some subjects, these ads are bringing a lot of controversy. I personnally don't like them. Most of the time, when kids smoke, it's not by submission, but by imitation. They just wanna do like their friends.

Re: blucigs – The US needs to be tougher on smokers, like Canada. In Europe you get real messages about smoking: "YOU WILL DIE". In the US, you get "This could cause cancer, so be careful". It's pathetic. People need to realise that their nasty habit will kill them.
I know someone who nearly died of lung cancer from 2nd hand smoke, from working in smoke-filled nightclubs for years. People who smoke around their children should have the same consequences as if they were beating them.

The messages like "Smoking kills" are pointless. People don't care about it. We're used to seeing them on every packet. Only the price of cigarettes can have an influence on smokers.

Parents need to just tell their kids look if u smoke i will kill u…it worked for my sister and i….they also said if we get pregnant we will kill u…so we waited till our 30's to get married and the oral sex is great….its not governments job to raise our kids right its the parents job to raise their kids right….if ur parents smoke then ur probably gonna smoke if ur parents are promiscuous well ur most likely be the same unless u rise above it….

I found this interesting because there is just as much a chance of getting oral cancers from HPV via oral sex as there are of getting it from smoking cigarettes, if the ad tied these themes together it would have been brilliant.
I think it's great, it got everyone's attention and made the point. Very effective avertisement. I only wish they had used people of all walks of life. This targets just one demographic.
Actually incase you aren't aware, unprotected oral sex is on the rise and with it, higher incidents of throat cancer, due to the human papillomavirus. So, one could argue that it's effective.
