SeaWorld Killer Whale Had Violent Past!

16_540x360.jpg

Of course, it did! It's a wild animal!

At Sealand in British Columbia in the mid-90s, a trainer drowned while in the tank with Tillikum, the whale who killed a trainer Dawn Brancheau at SeaWorld on Wednesday.

He was sold in 1999 to SeaWorld Orlando and another incident occurred. The scratched and bruised naked body of Daniel Dukes was found draped over the whale. He has apparently gotten past security and tried to interact with the animal.

"He's not an aggressive animal. He's good with the trainers. He has a good relationship with a lot of the trainers. He understands people," said park officials after the incident.

What kind of effing idiot would do that?! It is a whale and it's pissed that it's stuck doing tricks for people in a small tank and not frolicking in the ocean.

Haven't U ever seen Free Willy?!

    love the last line :P

  2. 2

i hope they don't put it to sleep RELEASE IT IN THE OCEAN PEOPLE!!!!

  3. 3

    Now you're
    the Whale Whisperer?

  4. 4

FAREWELL PEREZ! I can't go on reading stupid sites like this. These gossip joints have taken over my life and I'm sick of it. I don't care about any of these stories. They are irrelevant. I think I have lost a few brain cells by reading your column. Adieu!!!!

  5. 5

Perez, Agree completely with you. Why are people so shocked when wild animals kill?????? I live in Florida and people are always getting bitten in the ocean , then wanting to kill the shark that did it. HELLO —you were in their home idiot!!

  6. 6

Poor Tillikum, to him that tank is the size of the bathroom. My heart goes out to the trainer's family, though. So sad.

  7. 7

in the wild, these whales stay with their mothers their whole lives. they are tight knit groups (pods) with each pod having it's own distinct language. it has been proven that whales kept in captivity still respond to and try to communicate with tape-recorded sounds of their family pod, even decades after capture. stories like this and the one above prove it is time to stop keeping these wild animals behind glass walls.

  8. 8

THIS MAMMAL DID WHAT IT DOES SEAWORLD ISN'T BLAMING ANYTHING OR BODY IT'S THOSE TERRORIST ANIMAL ACTIVISTS…..

I SAY LETS START WATERBOARDING THE ANIMAL ACTIVISTS……IT WOULD MAKE THIS WORLD A MUCH BETTER PLACE….

OH AND GET RID OF RELIGION…

  9. 9

theyre called killer whales for a reasn you know

  10. 10

OK now it"s the trainer's fault she got killed?

  11. 11

    lawsuit.

  12. 12

There is no such thing as Sealand in British Columbia. It's called the Vancouver Aquarium which isn't even close. FAIL!

  13. 13

I sooo agree!!! the poor thing just got frusterated and something snapped for the poor thing! ITS NOT THE ANIMALS FAULT!

  14. 14

…if Daniel Dukes had slipped pass the security, then he sorta had it coming. Having done dinner with Shamu multiple times, they've said that if someone were to go and interact, that the whales would probably accidentally kill you because they would think that you were trying to play.

…I think they either need to make the stadium wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy bigger for the whales sake, or find something else for them.

  15. 15

I wish people would stop adding to the bad name that "killer whales" have by calling them "killer whales". they are Orcas. And you cant release it back to the ocean with out teaching it how to fish and finding it family. it takes A LOT of HARD WORK to release these animals. most people dont wanna spend the time or money to do it.

  16. 16

What I love is the part where it say's "He was sold," What gives someone the right to "own" a creature like that? It's horrible what happened, but it's also horrible that human's think they have the right to own them like play toys.

  17. 17

    Violent past?
Chris Brown may have a violent past but this is a predatory animal that does not belong in a fucking POOL!
The above caption is right on. Being controlled to do what "trainers" want him to do will eventually take a toll on the brain. Poor girl and poor whale!
    Tragic!

  18. 18

This information about it being involved in other deaths was released yesterday. I would not call it a violent past. It is just an animal doing what ever it does. I really do not think that people are shocked that this happened. If they are shocked then they are a bunch of stupid people.

  19. 19

oh em gee.. a killer whale killed someone…duh fuc'kers its a killer whale emphasis on the killer….cmon_what do people expect

  20. 20

Once again….. Their name should indicate what these animals are known for. HELLO.
Their name isn't Cuddly super friendly whale. No… it's KILLER whale.
Watch a nature program. These beasts aren't friendly and often kill for the hell of it.
This particular whale was caught wild and I'm sure keeps some of that instinct no matter how well it is treated.

  21. 21

Go het 'em Tillikum!! Wild animals don't belong in swimming pools!! Kill and Attack

  22. 22

a)its called a Killer Whale — enough said. b)that tank is the size of a toilet for that poor animal. c)STOP BEING MONEY HUNGRY AND RELEASE THE POOR THING INTO THE WILD SO IT CAN RETURN HOME AND DO WHAT NATURE INTENDED FOR IT TO DO!!!! –> so sad seeing these animals locked up for our amusement .. they don't deserve it .. and any1 who blames the whale for all this is just an idiot. as sad as this situation is i find it hard to feel sorry for all those injured by this animal. its ur own fault and stupidity. its a wild animal. its nature is in the name [KILLER]……the only thing that should happen to this animal is that it is released into the wild NOTHING else.

  23. 23

Finally - you say something I totally agree with. People cage these wild animals, make them do ridiculous things and then are "shocked" when they lash out. People are idiots.

  24. 24

Daniel Dukes jumped the fence at night and attempted to SWIM with KILLER whales (Orcas). OF COURSE he was killed. WILD animals people will ALWAYS be wild. DOn't be fucking surprised when a monkey rips your face off or and Orca kills you.

  25. 25

FREE WILLY WAS NOT VIOLENT. I AGREE WITH U PEREZ. HE WAS "FREE". THAT WAS THE POINT OF THE MOVIE. HUMANS NEED TO STOP THINKING THEY CAN TAME THE WILD, AND CONTROL IT. EVER SEEN JARASSIC PARK? LET NATURE BE. SOME THINGS WERE BETTER WHEN THEY WERE DEAD AND STAYED DEAD (DINOSAURS).

  26. 26

If this had been a dog, it would have been put down immediately after the first death. I agree with most here–time to release him back into the ocean. But they won't–he's used for stud, which means $$$ to the powers that be. Greed trumps risk and danger to others everytime, I suppose.

  27. 27

Re: jaybles – THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN KIDNAPPING AND FUCKING WITH THE WHALES IN THE FIRST PLACE. THAT'S THE POINT. NOW THEY REALISED THE CONSEQUENCES. THEY'RE ONLY KEEPING THEM TO MAKE MONEY. NOTHING BUT DISGUSTING MONEY HUNGRY IDIOTS.

  28. 28

    She deserved it!

  29. 29

I hope that they dont do anything bad to this whale.
That accidents are tragedies.. but this is a wild animal.
It deserves respect and proper care.
I dont think it should be released as it cannot care for itself since its been in captivity.. but maybe let it do its own thing… no more dumb tricks. It seems like he isnt happy

  30. 30

it's a dolphin not a whale you know 0 things about this animal

  31. 31

When an animal acts in a violent manner, especially after having been held in captivity for so long. Shouldn't they take into consideration why it is acting the way it is. How else will a whale tell someone they are not happy. We as humans have voices, what does a whale have? So, now, I suppose that this poor unhappy creature will be put to rest. When he's been trying to tell people that he's not happy, in a place where he is not free. And she(trainer) will not be seen as having taken the risk, knowing full well the potential for danger.

  32. 32

I feel very bad for the trainer, as well as the other people who were injured/killed by the whale, but I do have to say that I think that the ruination of the incident(s) is due the animals own treatment. For over decade the whale had to be like a show dog and lived a majority of his life in what I consider to be a small tank for his size, so I'm not surprised to hear that the animal would become aggressive with people. Sad.

  33. 33

Now, that is the coolest thing that's happened in a long time. It would have been fun to have been there with the sirens going off and the suits coming out of the woodwork shouting at people to leave….lol.

  34. 34

Re: badnfluenz – The saddest thing is these Orca's Can not just be RELEASED back to the Ocean ! In captivity their main dorsal fin which helps them figure out distances folds over and doesnt work the same anymore for the poor whales and once RELEASED the fin never rises again! So therefore the ANIMAL WILL NEVER BE THE SAME OR SAFE in the WIDE OPEN OCEAN EVER AGAIN! THEY SHOULD NOT CAGE THESE POOR WHALES! ya think Free Willy would have caused more awareness!

  35. 35

My sentiments exactly, Perez!!! I HATE zoos and animal parks!

  36. 36

Re: HOWARD STERN RULEZ….baba booey – Look at your name! Do you HONESTLY think anyone would listen to you ?

  37. 37

I commented yesterday, saying it more likely was the same whale that killed a trainer in BC, and i was correct. This whale was pulled from the wild and will still be wild! it does not come down to preformance, he is not a whale born in captivity. At this point sea world should do like another keiko project and put this whale back into the wild and research it. He would be a great candadite for something like this. I was at Orlando when they first recieved this whale and they all knew not to go in the water with him. Did you ever think he was too large for the pool? he is a male killer whale, and his dorsoal fin alone is 6ft tall.

  38. 38

    Killer whales, forget about it.
Stick to bears and tigers…oh wait, that didn't work out very well either.

  39. 39

Re: LaurenNicole – yes I agree with this !and Plain Jane! I really don't think that the whales TRY to kill anyone! I mean where is blood ? the body is always just lifeless then brought back up when the whales find out , O NO they arent moving anymore ! I mean really those whales could rip us limb from limb and they would if it was a killing mode ! It was all play I have no doubt! But, this leads back to the reason these ANIMALS need to not be kept in the tanks and not in the wild! They BETTER NOT KILL that WHALE! They NEED and SHOULD have long ago caged him off in his own tank and let him take a break from humans !

  40. 40

THIS IS A FUCKING ANIMAL, IT'S NOT VIOLENT, THAT'S THE WAY A WILD ANIMAL ACTS! THERE SHOULD BE NO ATTEMPT TO HUMANIZE IT! PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE FUCKING WHALE IN THE OCEAN, WHERE IT BELONGS. BUT NO, THEY BROUGHT IT OVER TO THE WORLD OF THE STUPID TO BE MISERABLE IN A TANK, ENTERTAINING THE OXYMORONS!!! NOW THE WHALE IS " VIOLENT" ?????? FUCKING BULL SHIT!!!

  41. 41

To many of the previous posters - they are called "Killer Whales" because they kill other whales in the wild. They have never killed a human in the wild. Their average life span is 35 years in the wild - 4 years in captivity. This whale was kept as a "breeder" and was in an isolation tank a lot of the time. They're not solitary creatures - orcas should NOT be kept in captivity - period.

  42. 42

I really hope they stop using him if he's now killed 3 PEOPLE. maybe that will wake up the park a bit…probably not though.
The problem is that he's probably been in captivity too long and become too dependent on people that he wouldn't be able to survive in the wild.. he needs to be in some kind of animal sanctuary and kept away from the public

  43. 43

Perez you think you know so much don't you? All of you insensitive people are not realizing this was a loved woman. Someone's wife, someone's daughter, someone's sister, someone's best friend. Dawn was a wonderful soul and a wonderful spirit. I will miss Dawn she was a sincere kind and giving human being and a wonderful friend to my entire family. With all this sensationalizing let us not forget this resulted in the loss of a human life, for something that was not her fault at all. Dawn loved her job and loved those whales, please have some respect and decency. She will be truly missed, I can't even express how much and how shocked we are all to lose her.

  44. 44

Re: lancecappy – hey Lance I saw your comment yesterday and thought of you when I read this! You were so right! and that is sad this animals shouldnt be in SHOWS ! And now they will blame HIM! so Sad.

  45. 45

Release it into the ocean? C'mon people… He was captured off the coast of Iceland at the age of 2 … IN 1983! He would never survive and Iceland refuses to consider it, because even if he could survive the parasites and viruses that he could possibly have could contaminate the waters. …Good job Seal World

  46. 46

    Re: luvstotango – LMAO Luvs

  47. 47

    ROSIE O'DONNELL KILLED SOMEONE????

  48. 48

MARIO, HAVEN'T YOU BRAGGED ABOUT GOING TO SEAWORLD BEFORE? ANY ONE WHO HAS PAID MONEY TO WATCH THESE WILD ANIMALS "DO TRICKS" TO ENTERTAIN MORONS ARE TO BLAME HERE! NO WILD ANIMALS SHOULD BE CAPTURED FOR HUMAN PLEASURE. ITS INHUMANE AND CRUEL!!! STOP FEEDING THE BEAST AND DON'T PAY MONEY TO SEE THIS BULLSHIT!

  49. 49

Re: curiousred – NO its not the trainers fault. Its Seaworlds fault for buying the animal and treating it like a circus animal when it was known to be violent in the past. JMO.

  50. 50

People, people…It is not a killer and it is not a whale. It is an orca and the poor thing has been kept in tiny tanks since his capture and overbred. Tragic for the trainer and her family; but not the orca's "fault"

  51. 51

I hope they just release the animal back into the wild.. Only drawback, if the animal has been in captivity all of its life, it will not survive in the wild. They should not punish the animal. Just like when they go looking for and kill the bears or bobcats who attack humans. We invaded their turf.

  52. 52

Re: sheesha – I am very sorry for your loss and I can attest to Dawn being a wonderful person. BUT that doesn't discount the fact that these animals are WILD and shouldn't be used as entertainment. I know Dawn loved what she did and should be proud of her accomplishments, but we also have the right to form our own opinions about the situation. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

  53. 53

No Human wants to go to jail willingly, why would any animal, fish, mammal, want to be held captive, they have no say in the matter and its basically prison to them.
They have natural instincts that humans can not get rid of. We belive we can but its a natural charectoristic of the whale to attack. Hense the name KILLER whale.
As a young woman who has studied animals for the past 6 years I hate to say ….. "you get whats comming to you when you play with non-domestic animals"
Hopefully this will have the whale released into the ocean where he belongs. Also lets hope it wont be to hard for him to re-adapt to his natural setting.

just like the circus…this is animal cruelty.

  54. 54

the incident that took place in 99 was a young man who actually stayed secretly after hours and jumped in the 50 degree water and startled the whale, im not sure what sane person would jump into a killer whale tank alone at night?

  55. 55

"re: FemTrek Forever" Did I say that i agreed with them being caged and away from the ocean? no, i dont believe i did. I actually agree 100% that they shouldnt have fucked with them in the first place. but they did, and now they have to deal with the consequences. one of those being that death of the trainers can happen. all i was saying is that now that they have them, why would they want to spend all the time and money to help the creature be free again? they make them how much money every year? why would they wanna help get rid of $$….they dont want to. its bullshit, they should be forced to. its called a WILD ANIMAL for a reason people!!

  56. 56

it's our fault as humans why this happened.
if i was the whale i'd be pissed too being stuck in a small tank when my mind really wants the giant ocean to swim in.
they better not put this guy to sleep because he's just reacting to the built up energy and frustration he feels in that small tank.

  57. 57

It is a misunderstand, like how sharks attack surfers. This animal hasn't really done anything wrong, and that guy who snuck into seaworld to play with the animal? That is just stupidity on his part and i'm all about survival of the fittest. And this animal isn't a wild animal, he has spent his whole life in a cage, he has no idea how to survive out in wild nature.

  58. 58

Re: pgal – i like you!!!! Right on!!

  59. 59

Re: Rican31 – Yeah. I don't know whether or not releasing this guy is a possibility. I don't know much about whales but I do know they are highly social and intelligent. Their survival may depend upon their pod and hierarchy of members etc. etc.
Sometimes reintroducing wildlife into their normal habitats after periods of captivity does work. It would be nice if this were one of those situations.
The whole thing makes me sick!

  60. 60

poor Tilikum they need to try to reintroduce him into the while like they tried to do with Keiko(Willy) he deffinitly deserves it! I just fee so bad for him

  61. 61

i hope every idiot associated with catching, trading, keeping and visiting these imprisoned creatures end up the the same way….. that includes ppl seeing them as tourist attraction. That means you mom and pops!!!

  62. 62

so sad, I agree with you Perez. He needs to be free like and all animals in captivity too. They always look so depressed. I am a huge animal lover (was obsessed when I was little) so my parents took me to a few zoos and I remember they upset me so much. To see such unhappy animals just shoved in a corner, scared of people etc ugh it's heartbreaking

  63. Lo says – reply to this

    63

not only that but they get sick very easily and a lot of them die up to 10 years short of a whale in the wild. They're not gold fish and the trainers understand there's a risk. If I was a whale I'd be pissed off too.

  64. 64

About the most sensible thing you've said in a long time.

  65. Eve29 says – reply to this

    65

    RELEASE THE WHALE!!!

  66. 66

Re: MariaBB – GOOD, AND GOOOODBYE!!! Can't wait not to see you around here anymore, you intolerant ass. (better not reply, that means you didn't leave his site remember!) We're going to keep tabs! :)

  67. @v@ says – reply to this

    67

Performing killer whales are specifically taught to toss upright people up a predetermined height in some acts. I wonder if the whale thought he was just playing like whales do. I don't know that he was even 'pissed.' They're big animals who wouldn't know their own comparative strength. They only limit their force in play as they are trained to do so over and over.

  68. 68

Please stop putting wild animals in small enclosed areas where they don't have room to roam and be free!!!!! I refuse to go to Aquariums and such. It is just animal cruelty. It's not their fault they were born animals and not people. What if you came back in your next life as a killer whale? Would you like to be stuck in a pool? A pool is like the equivalent of us being in a freaking closet. This is my soapbox! Damn animal cruelty ppl!!!!!

  69. 69

Re: HOWARD STERN RULEZ….baba booey – CALM DOWN FREAK! Oh that's your best cause huh? Wanting to torture people that are standing up for animals that are SUFFERING…SUFFERING FUCKING MERCILESSLY!!! There are HORRIBLE THINGS BEING DONE to animals AS WE SPEAK!!! The world didn't used to be like this, it's gotten HORRIFIC, this is the reaction to the world getting greedy and sick, is people standing up everywhere for animals finally. We need to quit pretending they have no meaning!

  70. 70

Re: tx2calgal – IT'S NOT A DOG, NOT EVEN CLOSE, IT'S BRAIN IS AT LEAST 3 TIMES BIGGER THEN YOURS!!!

  71. 71

these whales aren't meant to perform 24/7 for our pleasure…it's a wild animal…therefore it should be in the wild/ocean…it's always about money though…still very sad for the trainer/the family :(

  72. 72

The stupid fucktard who snuck in the whale's pen deserved it. Release the whale.

  73. 73

    Animals belong in the wild.
If someone forced you to be a clown in captivity you would probably kill them too if you were an animal.

i AGREE WITH PEREZ for once. It's sad for the trainer and for the whale. Unfortunate and necessary. It could have been avoided if the animal was not kept in captivity in the first place.

  74. 74

"It was from one of these pods, near Iceland, that Tillikum was most likely stolen over two decades ago. The capture was no doubt violent and traumatic because killer whales, like most creatures, will fight and defend their young. Before capturing baby whales was banned in US waters Sea World and other marine mammal parks used to regularly poach from whale pods in Puget Sound in Washington state - the following is footage of one of those operations:

A Flash object that is incompatible
    with mobile devices was here

The operations were planned military-style and involved the use of explosives and helicopters to disorient and separate the whales - which as you can see from the video are traumatized and screaming in fear and painIt was in one of these operations Tillikum was separated from his family - somewhere in the cold seas he was brutally ripped from his pod, where he would normally have spent his entire life, roaming the oceans, singing with his family and diving to extraordinary depths to fish. Instead he was taken as a young whale to a 35-foot deep pool in the warm sun of Florida….."

  75. 75

Re: AniRosi – so says a person who eats meat and wears leather

i hope some cows trample you

  76. 76

There's a reason why they're not called kittens.

  77. 77

They should make fishtick out of that horrible creature >=)

  78. 78

who's fault is this? the whale? i think not…………..why didn't you leave the poor thing in it's own environment, no, it had to be put on display for all the numbnuts to pay money to go see these poor creatures do tricks for them. stupid stupid stupid………………

  79. 79

Hey guys, there's A LOT of commenting on the websitethe 'usa today' .com, under news and the heading is "M.E. says drowning, trauma killed whale trainer"…if anyone wants to get on there and comment and HELP ME OUT! :)

  80. 80

Re: pattyvdl – Or better yet, i'd rather have some Patty BRAIN STEW with carrots and taters!

  81. 81

It's simple, Whales belong at the ocean.
Whales are not here to entertain us, they are beautiful animals who swim hundreds of miles a day

  82. 82

Free Willy wasn't a documentary, idiot. That whale might have a terrible time after being released. Many times they don't have the immunities to battle ocean germs because of their more restricted diets in containment. He's spent 25 years in a tank you can't just release him and hope for the best. If you watched the actual documentary on that whale (from Free Willy) you would know it took months of preparation, adjusting the whale to ocean water and teaching him to hunt for himself.

  83. 83

Whales are very intellectual animals.. agreed. Being made to do silly tricks all day and kept in captivity. SO SO wrong.

  84. 84

This is what happens when we use animals for our amusement. Why are people trying to blame the whale?

  85. 85

It amounts to nothing more than torture. That trainer bitch got what she deserved. Next!

  86. 86

Re: JackWad – No need to get personal, WAD. Brain size has nothing to do with it–the whale's at least. Take bears, for example. If they attack and are captured, they are tagged, released, and monitored. If they attack a second time, it's noted. However, a third time and they are put down. Besides, the example I gave with relation to an attacking dog has been used all day today in news reports–as well as the fact that it will be kept for breeding purposes.

  87. 87

Set it free they don't deserve to be captured and used for entertainment

  88. 88

Blows my mind when people get shocked and horrified when a wild animal attacks other people.

Wild animals are not pets. They're known as KILLER WHALES for a reason. Jeeez

  89. 89

I couldn't agree with you more Perez! Wild animals should be in the WILD!!! Not stuck performing tricks in a small tank! I think any creature would go insane under those circumstances… Shame on Sea World though I do feel sorry for the lady that lost her life

  90. 90

    Re: risheerish
nope. you're the fail and perez has his facts straight. sealand was in victoria, bc in oak bay. after the trainer (a young wowan about 20) slipped into the water, the orca (tillikum) played with her and held her under water. sealand shut down soon after.

  91. 91

Seriously, those people had it coming…
    Maybe now they'll learn!

  92. @v@ says – reply to this

    92

Poor thing, and I mean both of them.

  93. 93

Re: tx2calgal – I know but it's still speciest to believe that because under the same logic where's the justice in the fact that we killed some of Tikium's family members during the militant capture of him in 1983? How do we decide who just gets "put down" when you're dealing with a complex being that we have ENSLAVED. If you think about it, I'm surprised these animals don't turn sooner! I don't think he can be RELEASED because he might die now, mayyyybe a danger to humans in the wild who's to say but highly unlikely. He's not going to go looking to kill humans now as a vendetta in the wild, he didn't try to EAT her….there are other options for him. The killer whale that they tried to release before was first put in that ocean enclosure on the coast in Oregon…something like that. but that would be sick of us to put this sentient, highly evolved and intelligent and extremely victimized already being, "down".
