Earlier last week, the coroner revealed that Brittany Murphy had a number of drugas running through her system at the time of her death, including the commonly prescribed painkiller, hydrocodone AKA Vicodin.
Reports now say Murphy was prescribed 120 hydrocodone pills 11 days before she died, and there were only 11 pills remaining the day Brittany died!!!!
WTF!
Yes, Murphy's death was ruled accidental, but still!
Where did those other 109 pills go????
The LA County Coroner's office is currently on a wild goose chase to find the doc that prescribed Brit the ridiculous amount of Vicodin, but so far, no luck.

Holy shet, why do people abuse their bodies like that?
Hopefully, for the sake of her family, she got the prescription but didn't fill it yet. I would hate to think that she took that many in such a short amount of time. I know sometimes docs write a large prescription so you wouldn't have to come in an fill your order every 2 secs but with a drug like that, they're not supposed to because they're supposed to do a quick check-up to make sure it isn't affecting you negatively.
That isn't a ridiculous amount of pills to be prescribed if someone has a painful condition and needs them on a daily regimen. In fact Perez, Hydrocodone is not nearly as strong as Oxycodone or Oxycontin, but I wouldn't expect you to know a thing about the meds. Nor do you even know what her dosage was. If she was on 5/500s or something that's really low dose.
Now the fact that so many were gone after 11 days is suspect, but her husband could have been taking them from her. You're always pointing the finger at the deceased, assuming that just because drugs are prescription they're being abused.
Try living with a chronic pain disease, when you can't even get out of bed because the pain is too great. And then imagine there's a medicine out there that helps with the pain and makes you able to get up, live life, and not have so much chronic pain all the time. It's amazing. It's people like YOU that spout out your mouth and give Rx drugs a bad name. People will abuse anything they can– there are people who huff compressed air cans for the rush, but you don't see anyone talking about the dangers of that.

Well she had pneumonia and hydrocodone would both help stop the coughing and relieve associated pain. If she'd OD'd on it, that would have already been noted in the coroner's report.

Hydrocodone is NOT Vicodan. It is pure whereas Vicodan is mixed with Tylenol. It's just ridiculous to keep hearing that they are not the same. Hydrocodone comes in a capsule that is orange and brown; I know that is a favorite pain killer. It is legal heroine it is fantastic it is much much much better than vicodan that is WATERED DOWN with tylenol as if the opiates aren't enough. It is a pain killer too and Simon prolly jacked it for his back problem.

doctors don't easily prescribe Hydrocodone because it is a class l narcotic and very addictive. she could not have gone through 109-11 pills in 11 days; impossible she wouldn't have had time to savor the flavor.

120 pills of hydrocodone is not an abnormal quantity to be prescribed. If it was hydrocodone APAP 5/500 (Vicodin), which contains 5 mg and 500 mg of acetaminophen aka tylenol, then the maximum dose a day would be 8 pills. And it's considered a C-III drug, so get your shit straight, people.
That is not a ridiculous amount of pills for one prescription. I am a nurse and an average prescription is 120-240 pills for a 30 day supply. A common prescription is to take 1-2 pills every four hours as needed. However, unless she had a chronic moderate-severe pain condition 109 pills in eleven days is excessive but not usually deadly.
maybe they should have done blood work on the husband too! he probably swiped the vicodin.

I'm perplexed! If, in fact, these were PRESCRIBED, then all the DA would have to do would be verify the prescription and get the doctor's name and license number. Pharmacies do not fill prescriptions to pretend or ghost physicians. Is there more to the story? Were they not prescribed? Does the LA police department not know how to conduct a simple investigation? Someone enlighten me.
I'm a pharmacist and #120 Hydrocodone is a very typical quantity. 4000mg of Tylenol is the max safe dose daily, so if she was on Hydrocodone/APAP 5/500 it should be a max of 8 tablets daily in order to avoid liver damage, however I see plenty of doctors ignoring that rule and prescribing up to 12 daily. This is one of the things I educate patients on all the time.
I am prescribed 10 30mg Oxycontin pills everyday. I see my doctor every 28 days so my RX is for 280 pills. I know two other people prescribed similar conditions because we live in chronic pain and need long term pain mangement to get by. Since this woman had a prescription you can't say she was abusing drugs. Not every person who takes a pain pill is a drug addict. Unless you know what her problem was or why she needed the medication-or if she needed it at all- you shouldn't scream drug addict and go get the doctor. Thats very presumptuous of you. You don't know what she was going through and have no business attacking her doctor either you have no idea why he prescribed what he did. Maybe she lied to get drugs maybe she really needed them. Bottom line is you don't know. Now let that beautiful girl rest in peace! Don't slander the dead, they cant defend themselves.

Remember that THIS was the reported reason for the prescription. Her primary physician wasn't treating her for the pneumonia, which wasn't even diagnosed. MAYBE you'd get some codeine cough syrup from a doctor if you were coughing, but all that Hydrocodone? I doubt it.
She was abusing the drug and someone(s) was enabling her to do that. Hydrocodone/ Vicodin/ Oxys whatever feel GOOD. So people abuse them and get addicted to them. It happens. And it sure looks like it happened to her.

Well if she was anything like me. I have a tendency to forget my medicine at home so I put it in different bottles and put some in my car some on me and some in my Book sack. Sometimes thing that seem horrible are just mis interpreted.

The average perscription for vicodin is 120 pills a month. You also don't say the strength. Most scrips are written for two every four hours. Don't make it seem like some thing it is not.
vicodin 5-500 is taken 1-2 q4-6 hours max of 8/day the the vicodin es is 1 q4-6hours max of 5/day…there is nothing wrong with the amount that she was prescribed..the next time you make criticizing comments, do you research. youre a gossip queen, not a doctor..so know your role

Reports are she had drugs consistent with treatment for a respiratory infection; you don't prescribe Vicodin for a respiratory infection! Painkillers for cough relief are only supposed to be used in the case of chronic coughs, like with lung cancer, as coughing clears out the airways and if you suppress a cough during an infection, you can end up with pneumonia. Vicodin's serious $hit and they shouldn't be handing it out for BS reasons like menstrual cramp - it's horribly addictive. Sound like she got a virus and gave herself pneumonia indulging a Vic addiction.
That really isn't that large of a quantity if she had chronic pain. However, if she was being treated for some type if chronic pain, as I believe was mentioned by her husband, she would be required to be seen by physician every month, and have her breathing and vital signs checked at that time. This would be a fairly average amount of medication for a month, but if some Dr just called that amount in for her, the DEA will be all over them.
It would be nice if you knew your facts before you make a fool of yourself.
Technically the amount of pills missing isn't so outrageous. Vicodin is often prescribed: 1-2 tabs every 4-6 hours- so you could, in effect, be taking 12 of them per day. It looks as though she was taking a little less than that. The worrisome part is that she was taking them for such a long period of time (usually Vicodin is prescribed for only a few days) -the longer you take them the less effective they are for pain but the more your body needs them to function. Whoever the doctor is who prescribed this amount of pills she be checked out too!
well if it helps any, im a pharamacy technician and when a doctor normally prescibes lortab, vicodin (hydrocodone) the directions are for the patient to take 1 to 2 tablets every four to six hours….so 120 pills…up to 12 pills a day..is a 10 day supply

It's really not that unusual. It was probably the lower mg. She could take up to 4 a day, so she had a 30 day supply. Big deal. I have knee issues and when it flares up, I take four a day to get through my pain. Maybe she gave some to her husband. Big deal.
She died because she was sick. She probably choked while vomiting, or her poor heart gave out when she was vomiting because she was weak. She wasn't too thin, either. Give it a rest.

Re: coqauvin – Dude, hydrocodone is the generic name for Vicodin & Lortab. It is hydrocodone (the narcotic) combined with acetaminophen (the generic name for Tylenol)… so it is the same thing.
why is it in the U.S. they cannot find out what doctor prescribed the drug? In Germany, only registered and certified doctors are allowed to write prexcriptions and only registered and certified pharmacies are allowed to give them to the person handing over the prescription! No matter whether you have a private or a public health insurance, you know we have BOTH types of insurances in germany an dEVERYONE here has health insurance…If you had one,t oo, maybe things like that would not have happened…

You are also correct in that the 5/500 is a very low dose of narcotic (5 mg) being the narcotic, 500 being what we know as tylenol.

Just the tylenol (acetamenaphen) a day she got from the Vicodin would have sent her into liver failure. Over 8grams (that's 16 extra strength tylenol) would have shut her liver down so she screwed herself either way.
So sad, but hopefully her story will help someone else.

As someone on pain management, 120 a month is not unusual. That is the standard # usually given. And NO I am not an ADDICT, so I am actually offended that you would label someone as one even if they truly need them. I have extreme scoliosis and will inevitably need back surgery but am putting that off for as long as possible being that i am still relatively young. That being said she obviously was either OVERTAKING her prescriptions or her DOUCHEBAG husband was partaking some for himself! Like I said 120 a month is the typical. I'm prescribed 4 a day but usually take about 2 a day unless I am in extreme pain that day and i might take 3 then.
I also want to say that yes some doctors are quacks i.e. MJ's dr. and deserve to lose their license and more but I am sick of this "WITCHHUNT" on doctors because THE PATIENTS MISUSE THEIR PRESCRIPTIONS. What ever happened to personal accountability. Again not dissing Ms. Murphy, none of us know the whole story and I wouldn't put it past her GREEDY husband taking her meds as well. R.I.P. Brittany Murphy. She seemed like such a sweet girl and I liked her as an actress.

You can take 2 Vicodin every four hours. That is up to 12 pills a day, so if she was in a lot of pain she could have taken that many pills in a short amount of time. If you come into the hospital we give medication like this on a schedule all the time. Doesn't mean they are ALWAYS drug addicts. Just means that the majority of them are in a lot of pain. Also, hydrocodone can help controll coughing. If she was doing a lot of coughing she would probably have some rib pain so they could have given her that for the pain and coughing. I think with all of the recent drug related deaths people are quick to jump to the conclusion that she was addicted to drugs too! I hate to think this about her because she was one of my favorite actresses!
