Horrendous! 8.8 Earthquake Strikes Chile!

A devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile early Saturday morning, which has resulted in tsunami warnings for both Chile and Hawaii.

Geophysicists from the U.S. Geological Survey say the earthquake was 700-800 times stronger than the quake that hit Haiti earlier this winter.

A reported 122 casualties have been named, but officials expect the death toll to rise as the day goes on.

Awful.

Aftershocks have been occurring hourly and many Chilean residents at this point are still without power, water and phone service.

Our thoughts are with the people of Chile and hope they can recover from the crippling natural disaster.

    6. 6

I feel another bad remake of We Are The World. Blahblah12 natural disasters happen every year, don't be stupid and naive. Also it has nothing to do with 2012.

    7. 7

      we need perezito in chileeeeeee

    8. 8

Mario, this is a tragedy but you are not CNN…stick with the celebrity news!!

    10. 10

Is this the lead up to 2012? Thoughts are with everyone out there. Hopefully the tsunami heading for Hawaii doesn't do too much damage.

    11. 11

I am praying for everyone in chile including my mom and dad's family that are still in chile. HOpe they are ok

      13

well now we'll have to have a Chile fundraising campaing, so Obama can send over more tax dollars. Please tell me the Chilean government has enough money to pay for this mess?

    14. 14

WOW, 7.0 QUAKE IN JAPAN AND 8.8 IN CHILE… WHERE ARE THE CHARITY CONCERTS, MONEY DRIVES FOR THESE COUNTRIES??? SMFH. JUST SHOWS PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT BY BLACKS IN AMERICA. FIRST THEY CLAIM RACISM THEN TURN A BLIND EYE TO OTHER RACES IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS. OBAMA IS BLACK AND THAT IS WHY HAITI WAS MADE A PRIORITY WHILST IGNORING HELP FOR THE POOR AND DESPERATE IN AMERICA ITSELF!! WHAT HAPPENED TO KATRINA AND TSUNAMI VICTIMS IN THAILAND AND SURROUNDING REGIONS? WHERE IS WYCLEF THERE? EXACTLY… AMERICAN IS NOT A PARTIAL COUNTRY AND HAS SKEWED AGENDAS LIKE EVERYWHERE ELSE. JUST SAYIN.

    15. 15

I live in Santiago and the earthquake woke us up at 3:34 aprox in the morning… we are a very used to quakes and i'm ussualy not scared by them, but this time was very strong, the stronguest I've felt in my life… I wasn't born yet for the one that hit in 1985, but this one lasted for a very long time, things were falling off the walls and shelves, the ligths went out even befor the earthquake was over and alarms were going off everywere… it was horrible….

    16. 16

IM SO HAPPY YOU POSTED THIS PEREZ. IM FROM CHILE LIVING IN MIAMI.
I ORGANIZED A SHOW/RELIEF DRIVE FOR HAITI WHEN THE EARTHQUAKE HIT.
WE RAISED $3,000, AND I HOPE PEOPL HELP THE SAME WAY THE DID FOR HAITI, I KNOW I AM. PLEASE KEEP CHILE IN YOUR PRAYERS.

    17. 17

Re: yilimellado – Chile already got hit with a Tsunami from the quake. the ENTIRE PACIFIC is endanger of a tsunami from this quake. alerts are going up to Alaska, down to Antartica. Hawaii will be getting one most likely at 3pm est., but a tsunami can reach to japan. Again, the power from this quake, a little off shore from Chile was almost 1,000 x the power of the one of Haiti. The power just radiates everywhere, the waves can go ANYWHERE.

    18. chiro says – reply to this

      18

That doesn't even make since 700-800 times worse. It was only 100 times worse. Haiti was like 6.6 and this was 8.8. Do the math.

    19. 19

When you post this kind of stuff next to all your posts about absolute trash, it just comes off as really disrespectful. All you're saying is "Oh no, there was a quake in Chile guys……but come look at all the disgusting pictures of a fat transvestite in a thong and gay porn stars."

    20. 20

And one more time, like the pendejos we are, we gonna pull millions of dollars out of our assholes, pardon me, the politicians and every other asshole with "humanitarian" agendas will pull money of our assholes to send it to Chile. Once the money is there they will find faults with our help and perhaps, put our people in jail for smuggling people out of their mess. We can't even have compassion for our own people that even in the middle of wealthy towns are starving, but have millions to funnel to this countries were their own government had put people at risk in cases of natural disasters and other emergency situations due to the rampant corruption in their administration. Of course we walk with our heads in the ass and won't be able to see this and will continue being were we possibly are not wanted, only our cash. Pardon me for not being more sympathetic but let every one scratch their booty with their own nails.

    21. 21

someone call George Clooney - we need another star-studded telethon!

    22. 22

Re: bryanlizza – You are a fucking asshole, fuck you. I hope something bad happens to you and your tail will be between your legs. It is no one's fault these natural disasters happen so you can't say people have to pull themselves from their own bootstraps because its not like they wanted it! I bet it something happens to the United States, you would be crying for someone to help. I bet you listen to Rush Limbaugh, dumbass.

    23. 23

I hope Chile doesn't get the short end of
the stick when it comes to aid. That country is so pretty and
so are the people. Unlike Haiti , it wasn't a dump BEFORE the quake.

    24. 24

Perez i'm from Santiago, Chile and was the worst time in my life. The flat was shaking and we couldn't see nothing. it was dark everywhere. luckily nothing happen to us and the flat. We couldnt sleep cause we were afraid. But now everything is alright.. though.

    25. 25

Chili has not asked for international help at this time. I hope that there is not a lot of deaths or damage. Alas, there will be. Waiting to hear from our niece, her husband and their baby son who live in Santiago.

    26. 26

you people make me feel sick! chile isnt haiti, is a wealthy country and even if they need help who the fuck you think you are? USA is no the heroe of the entire planet, so many contries help to haiti of course they dont have celebs who make a whole campaigne about that…

    27. 27

Im from chile and im still so freaking scared, it was horrible but i had luck my family is fine and my house is still on its feets, chile is well known because of the earthquakes, the biggest one in the world struck chile in 1960. The destruccion is terrible half of the roads that connect the capital with the south of chile are destroyed.

    28. 28

RIP to those who died. 700-800x the one in Haiti though? WTF! Yeah natrual disasters do happen yearly but not this bad, this often, right?

    29. 29

So is there going to be a telethon for this? Probably not. Are there going to be jars in the grocery store and t-shirts for sale to help this country? Doubt it. What made Haiti so special and now this happens to this country? China has earthquakes all the time and we are never going there or having telethons for them….

Re: bryanlizza – YOU NEED TO GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT, CUZ RIGHT NOW YOU'RE JUST TALKING OUT OF YOUR ASS AND BEING VERY VERY RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL TOWARDS PEOPLE FROM CHILE(ME)YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE GOVERNMENT FROM HAITI TO THE ONE FROM CHILE. GO BACK AND CRAWL UNDER THAT IGNORANT ROCK YOU CAME FROM!

    31. 31

you idiot perez, it wasnt 800x "stronger" than the haiti quake, it actually was less powerful but covered a larger area which makes it look higher on the scale than the haiti one…….always knew u knew nothing about what u post…..

I wish people would shut up about how everyone is obsessed with Haiti and how Chile isn't getting any attention!

Get a damn grip, it just happened this damn morning! And F-U xcalibur, Obama being black made no difference to the help needed there. I'm sure Chile will get the attention it needs. People are probably more urgent about Haiti than quake that happened in Japan is because, well I dont know- maybe because it's a third world country.

    36. 36

Our prayers for everybody in Chile/ Nuestras oraciones para la buena gente de Chile…

    39. 39

Sorry to say this - but we are broke. Is a horrible thing, but a fact. Send money? Who will we borrow from this time?
      -
I'm not unsypathetic - Chile is a beautiful country and I'm heartbroken this happend. But their unemployment rate is substantially lower than ours. The countries who DO have money need to step up to the plate. I'm sure many will - but, seriously, where will the $$'s come from, folks?

    40. 40

Americans purely lack compassion and have an agenda for everything. Some of these posts make me very sad. My heart goes out to all and to all here who have written from Chile.

    41. 41

I'm not religious - but my best thoughts and hopes are with Chile and all countries affected. Just watching and hoping for the smallest numbers re deaths and destruction.

    42. 42

It seems funny to me that even though this earthquake is 700 TIMES stronger than the one that hit Haiti the only thing that people have to say is too bad so sad. This is directly affecting an AMERICAN state and of course the only things you hear are "hopes" and "prayers" for the people of Hawaii and of course nobody is going to donate millions of dollars to help rebuild the infrastructure that will no doubt be decimated in the tsunami. It's fucking infuriating that third world black people deserve our help when our own people are hurting and starving. Celebrities think it's cool to be splashed across the front of a magazine telling everyone how much they donated to those stupid Haitians who are too fucking stupid to even have a political system and I would just like to send a huge FUCK YOU to all of them. Way to be an awesome American. Let's help the country who spreads AIDS to the rest of the world and who offers nothing positive in return. Where was all this help when Katrina hit? NOWHERE, other countries pointed and laughed at us while we were left to pick up the pieces but of course whenever something happens to other countries we're forced to donate our time, money and other resources. It's beyond fucked up and I don't really care if any of you are offended by this because all of you are thinking it, you just don't have the balls to say it.

    43. 43

Re: xcalibur – THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. FINNALLLLYY someone who agrees with me. It makes me sick how much shit we did for Haiti yet you didn't EVER see everyone over in Thailand or down in Louisiana. It's so fucking ridiculous. It makes me sick!!! AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO SAY "OH POOR HAITI A 3rd WORLD COUNTRY" UHM Hi. Let's fucking do something about all of the other 3rd world countries too. If someone gets pushed on the playground and they're poor, you're going to help them but not the other kid who falls off the swing and breaks his arm because he's rich? That's pretty sad.

    44. 44

      :O
i hope that everyone will do what they can to help!

    45. 45

Re: MissSmartyPants – Are you that fucking stupid? Something did happen to the United States you uneducated dumbass. It's called Katrina and you wanna know what other countries did to help? NOTHING and when the hurricane hit Hawaii in 1992 who was there to help rebuild it? NOBODY. Get your fucking facts straight before you talk.

    46. 46

i have family there, luckily we heard from them before the power was cut. To all the assholes worried your precious dollars are going to be sent to Chile, you needn't worry. Chile is a strong country economically, and is, in fact, not asking for international help. Turn on the damn news and you'll see that many things are up and running once again. The focus is on finding all those missing, dealing with the casualties, and eventually re-building everything that fell.

      thanks for caring anyway, assfaces.

    47. 47

i can't believe some comments!! people are so rude, first of all IT WAS bigger than Haiti but Chile is a country that suffered from earthquakes so it's prepare but still, railroads are completely ruined, bridges collapsed and the comunication system doesn't work, people need to stop being so selfish and start thinking about the others. If we think about it the entire world is a misery but there's nothing better than knowing you help someone who's life is now worse than yours. HERMANOS CHILENOS ESTAMOS CON USTEDES!! i'm marisa from argentina

ps: Mario you should warn about the possible tsunamis in other countries and the sequels of the earthquake in argentina that killed a little boy

      Re: maudlin19 – I would - and I'm considering - volunteering - I haven't money - but I can work to help.
      -
Its not a matter of "precious dollars" - we just don't have ANY dollars anymore (thanks, Bush, for 8 years of corruption). Clinton left the white house with a POSITIVE balance — Bush & cronies turned that into a trillon dollar debt.
      -
Can you advise me — if I volunteer, would you possibly know which agencies in Chile I should apply to? Thanks.

    53. 53

in the end days, there will be alot of "natural" disasters

    54. 54

Too bad that Chileian cvnt Snookie wasn't visiting her ancestral homeland when it happened. She woudn't have gotten hurt though because everything would have slid off her dirty greasy body

Weee are the worldddd … Weee are the childrennnnn ….

    56. 56

Chile isn't asking for any help , they're strong enough to work this out. Also Chile is used to earthquakes so evereything is built stronger.

    57. 57

I feel a bit of relief, reading in the news that they aren't expecting a surge in deaths over the 122 that are already accounted for, and I praise Chiliean brothers and sisters for knowing what to do in this kind of situation to protect themselves. It is a beautiful country and hopefully they can recover quickly from this catastrophe

    60. 60

For those who rant about the fact «nobody» helped after Katrina, turn to Bush. Help came late, or not at all.
How many victims after Katrina? 1836 dead
How many after the quake in Haïti? 300 000 !
      In Chile ? 200…
      Get you fact straight.

Re: johnnycanada – Look.. the earthquake from haiti was actually less powerful than the Chilean one BUT! in Chile we are so used to earhquakes (we've had like 3 in 75 years) that all of our constructions are made to resist earthquakes so that is why it wasnt that catastrophic as haiti. And we can't compare Chile with haiti.. because our political system is more modern and we were prepared.. and which i really whish that haiti would've been prepared like us for such a catastrophic thing

    65. 65

Wyclef is hard at work trying to figure out a way to make money off this disaster.

    66. 66

    67. 67

    68. 68

Re: chiro – you obviously have no idea how earthquakes are measured these days moron

    69. 69

For those who don't know, the earthquake was almost a 1000x more powerfull than Haiti's earthquake. The big difference is than here in Chile we are used to earthquakes. Our country is on the ring of fire, so we have anti-sismic laws for construction. You can see from images that the destruction was big, but death aren't as many as you could thought. Our country hasn't asked for help to any other country. So please, stop comparing us to Haiti, we are a more trained against these kinds of natural dissasters.

    70. 70

worst experience ever, this earthquake was soo strong.

    71. 71

Re: Rosh – This is the third time you posted something about the earthquake and all you have to say is that? You should watch CNN, not read Perez, Perez is NOT a news source.

And yes, something bad happened to me, just now,, I read your silly post, lol….

    73. 73

Re: ylanaty – Why am I rude? Because I have enough guts to speak my mind? So there, I am rude, so what? 76. 76

I am a Chilean citizen who lived in the states for most of her schooling years, however I've been back in Chile for the last three years and intend to stay there, thank god I was here in Atlanta visiting some friends and did not live the horrible experience my friends and family are going through. As for Pereziiito, stop giving him a hard time for posting this in the middle of celebrity news and saying it is a lack of respect…I am thrilled to see that you, Perez, can take the time to acknowledge these kind of circumstances (not that I don't love celebrity gossip), I really do appreciate it and thank you on behalf of my country. We need all the support and encouragement we can get.

    77. 77

Re: YoliSaa – LOL… if your country is so swell, why are you here and not in your land of milk and honey??? And yes I am an asshole, and rude, but 'fraid to say not a mother fucker. A bitch maybe since I am a girl, a straight one too. And to you, I am Miss Bitch…

    78. 78

As for those asking about the Chilean financial situation to avoid having to give any more american money towards worldwide aid for catastrophes like this, the Chilean government is indeed stable and will have the monetary order to probably deal with it on its own, however it saddens me to see this kind of worrying for the states have always been generous, and it is appreciated, the rest of the world is already helping us and hopefully so will America, for it is what's right, and if something of this sort ever hit America, god forbid, Chile and other nations would be there for the states as well. Thank you perez for raising awareness, and keep doing what you do best, celebrity stories, but never stop your involvement and concern for the more "serious" events, it speaks very highly of you that you are this way. Thank you, as for me, I've got to go buy many things for my family who has lost many material posessions.

    80. 80

Hey, you gringos are assholes (Not all of you, of course, I have read very sweet comments). I am chilean, I lived the earthquake, and yes we are used to quakes but not like this one, when you feel you're a dice in God's hand. Thank god, my family is doing fine, but I can't say the same for all chileans, and I feel it very deeply. So, you stupids talking about your taxes money, you can showe it up your asses, we don't want it. We have recovered from lot worse than this and we don't need your sympathy. I just hope you live through something like this so you know that the last thing you think about when something like this happens is money, and I also hope no one wants to give you a hand when you most need it. Fucking retards.

Thanks to all the people who have showed sympathy, your prayers are always welcomed. You really are human, God bless you.

    81. 81

Actually Chile got hit by a bunch of tsunamis already. And who cares if Perez is about celebrity news, this matter 100 times more that waht a celebrity doing. Wait until it happens here in the U.S and then u guys will give a shit. shallow ppl.

OMG, this is horrible. Prayers to Chile and everyone affected.

As for the comments: wtf? This has NO comparison to Haiti. Chile is a seismic country used to quakes, unlike Haiti. Chile has a stable government and so far, hasn't asked international help. Obama already offered help but hasn't been needed. Or better yet: READ THE NEWS instead of assuming crap. Really.

    86. 86

Re: xcalibur – you do realize that this JUST happened, right? also there were fundraisers for both Katrina and the tsunami in 2004. and Obama did come out and speak about the quake in chile and offered u.s. help. you clearly have no clue what the hell you are talking about.

    87. 87

when i heard this i couldn't help but think this is some kinda of warning.

i usually don't hold stock in conspiracy theories, but the whole 2012 doomsday calendar is starting to look a bit more credible these days with everything falling apart all over the planet.

    88. 88

      Re: xcalibur

xacliber WTF are you talking about? the $10 red cross text msg donation drive for Haiti has been huuuuge and there have been several telethons and charity concerts for Haiti in the last 6 weeks. have you been under a rock?

    89. 89

Snooki you betta go help yo ppl

    90. 90

Oh god… I am from Chile, I was so scared last night, it was horrible! It's a total disaster, a lot of people died :/ the airport is closed, oh god… pray for Chile.

    91. 91

    92. 92

Re: bryanlizza – if any of us are far away from our country we have reasons, personally I have friends here that I visit from time to time. As for your comments in regards to our government structure and how it has been chosen by it;s people…it's a democratic nation and one highly regarded for that fact, and honestly, having lived in America for over a decade, and being very fond of this country, I suggest you think twice before you speak….only 150 casualties (low number considering the circumstances) and a country working somewhat normally considering the circumstances, with plenty of hospitals supplies and resourcces to get by, can't say the same about the Bush administration for hurricane Katrina…. I'm pretty proud of CHile today, and am waiting for the santiago airport to open so i can finally go sometime this week and help out in whichever way i can, which says a lot about my moral compass….something i believe you lack….don't mean to be disrespectful, and i do admire your capability of speaking so openly, however, you do lack a certain sensibility and clearly could increase your E.Q.

    93. 93

were are the famous people at? is the help only for poor countries?

Remember Katrina? well, believe it or not Chile sent help that time… A LOT OF HELP.
This is an awful episode in my country Chile, but we will get back on our feet in no time, like we always do.
We haven't asked for help yet, but if we need it we will ask for it. Just like the US would do it in a catastrophe.
Some bright mind said " if your country is so swell, why are you here and not in your land of milk and honey???". Well, many people of Chile live here in the US for a while, like me, because we earned scholarships and then we come back to our country. Sounds familiar?
My whole family is in Chile and I'm having the worst time in my life, so I just thought "I'm gonna read perezhilton.com, so I can clear my mind a little bit".
But I guess some people are just stupid and ignorant… anyhow, thanks for the constructive comments and to the other ones, I really hope that if you find yourself in a situation like this you get help even if it comes from another country.

Thank you all for your support and concern, it helps a lot reading your positive remarks (aside from a few), it is extremely comforting to see that the world "has got our back". Thank you all. It is at times like this when the worldwide community shows it's sensibility and most heartwarming human side. As a Chilean citizen and resident I deeply appreciate it.
And thank you Perez, once again, for raising awareness when it comes to worldwide important events, I think very highly of you.
