Horrendous! 8.8 Earthquake Strikes Chile!

A devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile early Saturday morning, which has resulted in tsunami warnings for both Chile and Hawaii.
Geophysicists from the U.S. Geological Survey say the earthquake was 700-800 times stronger than the quake that hit Haiti earlier this winter.
A reported 122 casualties have been named, but officials expect the death toll to rise as the day goes on.
Awful.
Aftershocks have been occurring hourly and many Chilean residents at this point are still without power, water and phone service.
Our thoughts are with the people of Chile and hope they can recover from the crippling natural disaster.

I live in Santiago and the earthquake woke us up at 3:34 aprox in the morning… we are a very used to quakes and i'm ussualy not scared by them, but this time was very strong, the stronguest I've felt in my life… I wasn't born yet for the one that hit in 1985, but this one lasted for a very long time, things were falling off the walls and shelves, the ligths went out even befor the earthquake was over and alarms were going off everywere… it was horrible….

Hawaii will be getting one most likely at 3pm est., but a tsunami can reach to japan. Again, the power from this quake, a little off shore from Chile was almost 1,000 x the power of the one of Haiti. The power just radiates everywhere, the waves can go ANYWHERE.
That doesn't even make since 700-800 times worse. It was only 100 times worse. Haiti was like 6.6 and this was 8.8. Do the math.
When you post this kind of stuff next to all your posts about absolute trash, it just comes off as really disrespectful. All you're saying is "Oh no, there was a quake in Chile guys……but come look at all the disgusting pictures of a fat transvestite in a thong and gay porn stars."
And one more time, like the pendejos we are, we gonna pull millions of dollars out of our assholes, pardon me, the politicians and every other asshole with "humanitarian" agendas will pull money of our assholes to send it to Chile. Once the money is there they will find faults with our help and perhaps, put our people in jail for smuggling people out of their mess. We can't even have compassion for our own people that even in the middle of wealthy towns are starving, but have millions to funnel to this countries were their own government had put people at risk in cases of natural disasters and other emergency situations due to the rampant corruption in their administration. Of course we walk with our heads in the ass and won't be able to see this and will continue being were we possibly are not wanted, only our cash. Pardon me for not being more sympathetic but let every one scratch their booty with their own nails.

Perez i'm from Santiago, Chile and was the worst time in my life. The flat was shaking and we couldn't see nothing. it was dark everywhere. luckily nothing happen to us and the flat. We couldnt sleep cause we were afraid. But now everything is alright.. though.
Chili has not asked for international help at this time. I hope that there is not a lot of deaths or damage. Alas, there will be. Waiting to hear from our niece, her husband and their baby son who live in Santiago.

Im from chile and im still so freaking scared, it was horrible but i had luck my family is fine and my house is still on its feets, chile is well known because of the earthquakes, the biggest one in the world struck chile in 1960. The destruccion is terrible half of the roads that connect the capital with the south of chile are destroyed.

I'm not unsypathetic - Chile is a beautiful country and I'm heartbroken this happend. But their unemployment rate is substantially lower than ours. The countries who DO have money need to step up to the plate. I'm sure many will - but, seriously, where will the $$'s come from, folks?
Americans purely lack compassion and have an agenda for everything. Some of these posts make me very sad. My heart goes out to all and to all here who have written from Chile.
I'm not religious - but my best thoughts and hopes are with Chile and all countries affected. Just watching and hoping for the smallest numbers re deaths and destruction.
It seems funny to me that even though this earthquake is 700 TIMES stronger than the one that hit Haiti the only thing that people have to say is too bad so sad. This is directly affecting an AMERICAN state and of course the only things you hear are "hopes" and "prayers" for the people of Hawaii and of course nobody is going to donate millions of dollars to help rebuild the infrastructure that will no doubt be decimated in the tsunami. It's fucking infuriating that third world black people deserve our help when our own people are hurting and starving. Celebrities think it's cool to be splashed across the front of a magazine telling everyone how much they donated to those stupid Haitians who are too fucking stupid to even have a political system and I would just like to send a huge FUCK YOU to all of them. Way to be an awesome American. Let's help the country who spreads AIDS to the rest of the world and who offers nothing positive in return. Where was all this help when Katrina hit? NOWHERE, other countries pointed and laughed at us while we were left to pick up the pieces but of course whenever something happens to other countries we're forced to donate our time, money and other resources. i have family there, luckily we heard from them before the power was cut. To all the assholes worried your precious dollars are going to be sent to Chile, you needn't worry. Chile is a strong country economically, and is, in fact, not asking for international help. Turn on the damn news and you'll see that many things are up and running once again. The focus is on finding all those missing, dealing with the casualties, and eventually re-building everything that fell.

I feel a bit of relief, reading in the news that they aren't expecting a surge in deaths over the 122 that are already accounted for, and I praise Chiliean brothers and sisters for knowing what to do in this kind of situation to protect themselves. It is a beautiful country and hopefully they can recover quickly from this catastrophe

And we can't compare Chile with haiti.. because our political system is more modern and we were prepared.. and which i really whish that haiti would've been prepared like us for such a catastrophic thing

For those who don't know, the earthquake was almost a 1000x more powerfull than Haiti's earthquake. The big difference is than here in Chile we are used to earthquakes. Our country is on the ring of fire, so we have anti-sismic laws for construction. You can see from images that the destruction was big, but death aren't as many as you could thought. Our country hasn't asked for help to any other country. So please, stop comparing us to Haiti, we are a more trained against these kinds of natural dissasters.

my grandma is in chile right now visiting her family. my mom finally got a hold of her at 1pm today and everyone is ok thankfully. their house are destroyed though.
I am a Chilean citizen who lived in the states for most of her schooling years, however I've been back in Chile for the last three years and intend to stay there, thank god I was here in Atlanta visiting some friends and did not live the horrible experience my friends and family are going through. As for Pereziiito, stop giving him a hard time for posting this in the middle of celebrity news and saying it is a lack of respect…I am thrilled to see that you, Perez, can take the time to acknowledge these kind of circumstances (not that I don't love celebrity gossip), I really do appreciate it and thank you on behalf of my country. As for those asking about the Chilean financial situation to avoid having to give any more american money towards worldwide aid for catastrophes like this, the Chilean government is indeed stable and will have the monetary order to probably deal with it on its own, however it saddens me to see this kind of worrying for the states have always been generous, and it is appreciated, the rest of the world is already helping us and hopefully so will America, for it is what's right, and if something of this sort ever hit America, god forbid, Chile and other nations would be there for the states as well. Thank you perez for raising awareness, and keep doing what you do best, celebrity stories, but never stop your involvement and concern for the more "serious" events, it speaks very highly of you that you are this way. Thank you, as for me, I've got to go buy many things for my family who has lost many material posessions.

I am chilean, I lived the earthquake, and yes we are used to quakes but not like this one, when you feel you're a dice in God's hand. Thank god, my family is doing fine, but I can't say the same for all chileans, and I feel it very deeply. So, you stupids talking about your taxes money, you can showe it up your asses, we don't want it. We have recovered from lot worse than this and we don't need your sympathy. As for the comments: wtf? This has NO comparison to Haiti. Chile is a seismic country used to quakes, unlike Haiti. Chile has a stable government and so far, hasn't asked international help. Obama already offered help but hasn't been needed. Or better yet: READ THE NEWS instead of assuming crap. Really.

As for your comments in regards to our government structure and how it has been chosen by it;s people…it's a democratic nation and one highly regarded for that fact, and honestly, having lived in America for over a decade, and being very fond of this country, I suggest you think twice before you speak….only 150 casualties (low number considering the circumstances) and a country working somewhat normally considering the circumstances, with plenty of hospitals supplies and resourcces to get by, can't say the same about the Bush administration for hurricane Katrina…. This is an awful episode in my country Chile, but we will get back on our feet in no time, like we always do.
We haven't asked for help yet, but if we need it we will ask for it. Just like the US would do it in a catastrophe.
