Chinese Gymnast May Be Stripped Of Her Olympic Bronze!

The International Gymnastics Federation is calling China's gymnastics team out on some decade-old bullshiz!

Although they were originally cleared, the officials are demanding China give back the Olympic bronze medal the country won in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney because one of their gymnasts was 14 years old!

14-year-old Yang Yun won a bronze metal for uneven bars in the 2000 games, but at the time there was "insufficient evidence" to prove the Chinese lied about her age.

A spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee has said they have received the findings from the FIG and will investigate the situation further before any action is taken.

"Clearly, we need to take time to consider the findings before the executive board can consider the matter," said the rep. "We would like to thank the FIG for their work and we would refer further inquiries to them."

And that poor girl probably thought she was in the clear!

Not surprising.. all of those girls looked like they were about 9.

Let the girls grow up– too much pressure at that age (plus there is supposedly an advantage at that weight/size ?)

    2. 2

let her keep it. If a 14 year old can kick ass then she deserves it.

    3. 3

she was good enough to win the bronze at 14.. So I think she should get to keep it.. yea I know rules are rules..but still..

    4. 4

Those of you saying she should keep it because she was "good enough to win at just 14" - you're dumb. Being younger gives you an unfair advantage in gymnastics. It doesn't hinder you. The Chinese have always cheated in this sport. It was obvious even in Beijing. Their government will fake all the necessary documents to get ahead in the Olympics. Take the medal away.

    5. 5

It might be a little too late to take it away, but I wouldn't disagree if they did. It should have been done a long time ago. There is someone else out there who is deserving of that medal and did not have a chance to have their moment.

    6. 6

Why poor girl? The girl and her country both new it was against the rules to compete at 14.

    7. 7

You know? If ALL THE OTHER COUNTRIES have to follow the rules, so should China. It doesn't matter that she's really good, if she's not old enough to compete, then she shouldn't be in the competition! PHUCKA YOU CHINA.

    8. 8

I remember them looking really young but it couldn't be proven

There is nothing 'poor girl' about this story. It is a wide known fact that the Chinese government supplies its gymnastic team with false documents and passports. Other countries follow the rules and so should China. End of story.

Actually the FIG launched an investigation into both Yang Yun & Dong Fanxiao, members of China's bronze medal in the team competition. Yang Yun was not charged as they said there was not enough evidence. Dong, however, was the gymnast found to have been age ineligible (even though we all know Yang Yun was too, she even admitted it in an interview). Sooo, IF the IOC decides to strip China of the team medal (& they should b/c it is unfair to other teams who could have brought younger gymnasts & thus scored higher) the bronze would then go to the US team. Personally, I am totally against the minimum age requirement, but since the rule is there it needs to be followed in order for the competition to be fair.

    11. 11

The rules are 16, typical for China to cheat

    12. 12

16 is the age rule, not 14. She and her coaches knew the rules. Take the medal back.

    13. 13

Re: heidelberg – You are Correct. I am glad someone said something cuz if they didn't I was gonna have too! :) )

    14. 14

Re: JoeyW – I hope soon if they continue to cheat as you say ALWAYS then they will continue! So Hopefully they will investigate and continue and if there is proof they are still cheating they should banish them all together from ever competing in the Olympics and never lets them back! WHY should they continue to be allowed when they cheat? Everyone else follows the rules, So should they!!!!!!

    15. 15

      chinese ppl cheat

    16. 16

      no surprise there
      take the medal away

    17. 17

Rules are rules. After being a gymnast for over ten years I can personally tell you that size and age are a definite advantage! There's nothing "poor girl" about it. I'm sure she'll be in the next summer Olympics since she will only be 18.

    18. 18

If she was underage.. I agree take it, they should not encourage children to be used for fame and money.. If all is in the clear more power to them.

    19. 19

being 14 makes it easier, not harder!
      take the medal back!

    20. 20

didnt this bs happen with china during the summer olympics?? im surprise this girl even made it to 14, dont they drown their girls at birth?

    21. 21

i hope if this is true they do take that medal!

and i hope they figure out the REAL ages of some of those chinese female gynmasts from 2008 b/c at least 3 of them looked no older than 11. i totally can believe the Chinese government would lie about their ages and forge documents to make them older.

definitely would not the be worst thing China has ever done, so it's utterly probable.

    22. 22

Dong and Yang were great in 2000, but rules are rules and they shouldn't have been at the olympics, they were only junior gymnasts. Maybe if they weren't so tired and injured by then they would have made it to Athens. I think this is a way for the FIG to cover the scandal of 2008. Dong and Yang looked way older back in 2000 when they were 14 than He Kexin in 2008. There is no way she's 16 and she took golds.

    23. 23

This would be heartbreaking…. but it's her own fault for lying about her age. I feel like China does this alot?

    24. 24

Fuck "this poor girl" she knew what she was doing.

    25. 25

I remember when this happened. I hope they take the medal away from this lying, little zipperhead.

    26. 26

The Chinese are notorious for cheating the age limits. In 2008 the entire team was suspect!! Does anyone believe that any of the girls on that team were 16? Hell no!! My bet is every single one of them were about 13 years old. It was ridiculous. The Chinese go to great lengths to hide the true ages of their competitors. They make up phony documents, make fake histories. In fact most of these girls are taken from their parents at the young ages of 2 or 3 years old. They're trained to do this one thing for The Olympics. They'd better not lose or else they just disappear.

    27. 27

there is an advantage being at a younger age. Not to mention the pressure put on their shoulders that the Chinese enforces. (I was once an Olympic hopeful at one point in my career, but because of my age they have JUNIOR OLYMPICS). I agree they should be investigated for the rest of their careers so the Chinese know not to put this kind of pressure on the 14 year old and so the 14 year old knows it is absolutely wrong and she will be found out eventually, causing them embarrassment they so richly deserve.

For having an INSIDE perspective, the age minimum is REQUIRED. The stunts being performed are incredibly dangerous. It's like underage and overworked children working in factories. Would YOU let that happen too??

    28. 28

don't you mean medal, not metal*

    29. 29

Let her keep it but make China pay a heavy penalty or be eliminated entirely in the next games. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

    30. 30

she deserves to keep it.. she won fair and square at the age of 14. Its not like she didnt actually win the event and got to keep the medal.

    31. 31

Duh, it's China for god's sake! Most asian countries pull this shit so they can win, it's no surprise. They're all greedy. If all the countires have to follow the rules, China is no different. Strip them off of the bronze, this shit is unfair.

    32. 32

It's not unusual for the IOC to go back and investigate. As far as I know, they don't have a statute of limitations. The Chinese are known for putting athletes on their squad that are younger than the age limit. The IOC stripped the German ladies swimming squad of their medals from the 70's well into the 90's when it was found that they had doped. If they're not going to follow the rules, they should pay…regardless of how long it's been.
I personally believe the age rule is silly (Nadia would've been ineligible for her Olympics with the age limit) but if that's the rule…it should be followed. Fight it at the level it needs to be fought.

    33. 33

Re: SheeBop – Sure she was good enough. Gymnasts like Nastia Liukin were good enough too at the same age. But they were prevented from making an Olympic team because their respective countries RESPECTED the age rule. The field of play was NOT fair, therefore-strip the Chinese of their team medal.

    34. 34

Re: LoTr1985 – The German female swimmers from the 1976 Olympics were NOT stripped of their medals. The IOC took no action in their case partly due to the fact that it was well past the statute of limitations-8 years, and partly due to the fact that the 1970's doping lab never caught them. You cannot 'grandfather' in modern day doping procedures, and retroactively remove medals from athletes that were awarded them over 3 decades go.

    35. 35

I think they also cheated in the Beijing olympics. Those girls didn't even look 16. That should also be investigated.

    36. 36

yea, why poor girl? she cheated
