American Idol Finalist Trapped In Chile & Needs Diabetic Supplies!

This is just awful! Someone needs to get on this FAST!

American Idol alum Elliot Yamin from season five was fortunate enough to survive the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile over the weekend. The singer has been in the country for the past eight days, playing at a musical festival 90 miles southwest of Santiago.

But the Type 1 diabetic crooner is slowly running out of supplies and fears for his health as he has been stranded with no way of receiving help. As of yet, he has been unable to reach the U.S Consulate at the embassy and if he does not get the medical supplies he needs soon, he could suffer from severe health problems - like a diabetic coma.

Elliot reached out the press in hopes that something could be done for him. He explained:

I am a Type 1 diabetic and I only packed enough insulin supplies for my pump to last a couple more days, so I’m starting to worry. I don’t know how long we’re going to be here. This country isn’t very keen on insulin pumps; supplies for my pump are running low. Hospitals here are very crowded, and as you can imagine, they are dealing with bigger things…We’re close to the airport here, but it is closed except for emergency purposes. The information has been so scarce regarding flights, one minute we’re leaving Wednesday, and then it is Friday. Now they are saying it could be beyond that time. I heard this morning that festival officials are hoping to drive us to Mendoza in Argentina, but I’m not keen because we have to drive through the Andes Mountains. They’re colossal and its single lane traffic. They claim the roads are passable, but nobody really knows. I think I am better off staying put where I am, I don’t want to take that death ride in an attempt to get to an airport…I hope to get home before I slip into a diabetic coma. That would be nice. I’m trying to be positive, I’m alive and well. I have all my limbs attached. I don’t know how we all got out of there unscathed. I’m very grateful we lived to tell about it.”

This poor guy!

We hope that somehow, he gets the medicine he needs or even better, gets back to the States to receive treatment.

Our thoughts and well wishes go out to him in what we are sure is a very difficult and scary time for him.

Somebody tell this guy that the road to Mendoza is perfectly safe; I did it once and it's also beautiful!

  2. 2

omg, poor guy, that sounds like living hell!

  3. 3

forget this loser! what about all the other people who need help? is this the best "news" u have to report these days?

  4. 4

oh god, this is awful, someone needs to get some insulin to this poor guy :(

    5

they have doctors and he can go to the diabetic association in santiago……..i was there once and i ran out of insuline and i did that…..just take all your medication with you so they can find the equivalent

  6. 6

Perez, are you kidding me? There are thousands of people that need help and you single this guy out cause he was on AI?

I hope he gets the help he needs but this post is somewhat insulting to other Chileans that require help

  7. 7

Jimena- I think he's worried that the road was damaged by the 8.8 hurricane not that it's a one lane road.

  8. 8

Perez….this is old news. He was on tv this morning saying he has new supplies and is perfectly fine. Stop being a drama queen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. 9

Quick send him a private jet! You can't leave an American Idol alumni without help! He's so more important than the rest of the country!

  10. 10

The road to Mendoza, Argentina is perfectly safe, single lane traffic or not. I went on that road with my husband and two kids two weeks ago and it was really beautiful, just fine. It's only "dangerous" or a problem when it snows and that happens in the winter not in the summer. Come to Argentina, you silly man!

    -
Way to travel like an American, dumb ass. It's not like the country was even set up to provide insulin in the form he needs without the earthquake.
    -
He goes off with just enough insulin to last the number of days he was visiting. Any doctor in the world would have told him to bring extra, a lot extra. If this hipster doofus had one ounce of common sense, he would have brought PLENTY extra
    -
The only thing this kid needs is a swift kick in the arse.

  12. 12

    Elliot-we'll pray for you!

  13. 13

someone, give him his insulin supplies! i feel so bad for the country of chile at this time..

  14. 14

Are you kidding me, Perez? How many diabetics do you think there are in Chile? WAY MORE THAN ONE. This is insulting and plain pathetic. You are always nagging on stars getting preferential treatment yet you single out ONE out of THOUSANDS that need help just because he was on American Idol??

So what, you think we should send insulin to him and not all of the others that need it? Idiot.

  15. 15

Oh no! That's terrible, i hope he gets his insulin in time :/ i love Elliot!

  16. 16

Golly, the music industry would be devastated if they lost Elliot Yamin! Just joking, can't he pay someone to loot a pharmacia there?

  17. 17

he could mitigate the consequences of no insulin by following a very low carbohydrate diet in the meantime…. but I guess from reading the rest of the notes above, he's already got supplies and is fine. I think it takes a lot of eating sugar/starch or going for a long while to go into diabetic coma. A more serious problem is overtaking insulin and not have any glucose ready by, you can slip into insulin shock.

  18. 18

He's in Viña del Mar (or maybe Santiago now) and here there's any kind of problems lack nor with food, medicine, gas, etc… Regarding to go to Mendoza, many has done that since the earthquake and there's no problem with that way. The area affected is 6 hours from where he is. I know a lot of diabetics in Chile and they use supplies from national and foreign labs. So I think he just want some kind of media attention and saw this as an oportunity… we have more serious problems in Chile right now.

  19. 19

Nothing is more terrifying for a Type 1 diabetic than to run out of supplies. People think Insulin is a cure but really it is just a medicine that allows us to live. Without Insulin type 1 diabetics die. So no insulin = waiting for death. I can not even begin to imagine the fear that Elliot is going through. I pray that insulin reaches him and everyone who needs it.

  20. 20

So from what I understand, supplies for his insulin PUMP are non-existent. So inject insulin the way millions of diabetics do who don't have a pump - with a needle.

  22. 22

He's criying for attention!!! I'm in Santiago right now and almost everything it's back to normal!! You can buy medicines and go to the hospital without any trouble!

They are serious problems going on in the south of the country and I resent some dumbass triying to get attention using something as horrible as a quake to gain some press! Get a life moron!

    23

This guy is so stupid… I hate how he keeps saying he's so grateful to be alive when he was more than 200 miles away from the epicenter… where he was, it wasn't even an earthquake… just a shake!
Also… for his information public hospitals might be crowded which i doubt, because there werent so many injured in santiago, but private clinics are working just fine and they could give him his insulin meds in a sec.
stupid asshole, he keeps trying to make everyone believe he lived through something very horrible when he didnt. there's people who really is in need, who is actually scared… so i hope this guy stops trying to gain media attention by telling lies, in an attempt to get back a career that he never had.

  24. 24

You know whats funny? Elliot Yamin was complaining about Chile before the earthquake and he suddenly had a change of heart afterwards. Im not trying to mean but he was talking stuff about Chile before and suddenly afterwards he was saying that it was a beautiful. I think he realizes that he has to depend on the people of Chile to get him out of this mess so thats why he is eating his words. The people of Chile are very nice so I think they will help him out

  25. 25

WHY DONT YOU REPORT ABOUT THE HELL WE'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH HERE??? "help him!" HELP US!!!!! My boyfriend had to drive 15 hours to save my grandparents from a town called Talca that was hit BAD. HELP CHILE!!! please donate!!!!

  26. 26

you should be embarrassed to post something like this! the whole country is in peril and all you can talk about is this dude who is in short supply of some insulin? our thoughts and well wishes go out to the people of chile in what we are sure is a very difficult and scary time for them!!

  27. 27

I was an Artist escort this guy at a concert and he is one of the most down to earth people I have every met. He is so sincere and greatful and doesn't have a huge ego. He is one of those people you only wish the best for. I hope they get some supplies to him in time.

  28. 28

    pleease!!!
the epicenter is way far, i know, because i LIVE THERE!!!!
and besides, he can go to ANY hospital and they will give them insuline, that is basic diabetic, and OMG it's one shot!!!

i love you perez but you should be intrested in real news!!!

  29. Kania says – reply to this

    29

Who care's about this guy?! There are other people that are hurt and in need of care more than him.

  30. 30

i am from chile and your stupid post offends me! you mention about the earthwake like what once? and now you are worried for this idiot who said 'thanx for nothing chile'.
Karma thats what it is. acting like a brad, like my country isnt going through enough already.
we have to worry for an irresponsible american who shouldve taken more insulin anyway!
like someone said before you should always take more than your normal doses of medicines when you travel…
yes its a sad situation but nowhere near as bad as verything else that is happening in Chile at the moment.
As a fellow latin american perez i wouldve expected you to be more supportive of my country, as you have been with haiti, etc.
but i guess Chile isnt 'poor' enough for the rest of the world to reach out…

  31. 31

this guy is ridiculous. i am an American living in Santiago. the road to Mendoza is perfectly safe. he is dramatic and ungrateful that he is in Santiago and not just a few miles more south where he would be without electrcity etc. Also, there are great hospitals and pharmacies on every corner here practically. i would bet a million bucks he has not even tried to resolve his insulin issue.

  32. 32

    12

  33. 33

For someone who hates Fox's News you do take a lot of stories from their webpage.

  34. 34

this is appalling. i have lived in Chile with a diabetic and guess what Idol, they have insulin there. this drama queen had nothing positive to say about my country until the earthquake hit and now he is milking this earthquake to draw attention to himself. Not everything is about you Elliot. You may not realize the extent of the damage in Chile because you are safe and sound in Vina del Mar, but only a few hours south of you entire towns were wiped out by waves. the destruction is unbelievable and i have seen it with my own eyes. it is mind boggling to me that someone could be so self centered. there are a million places you can get insulin Elliot. figure it out instead of whining about it

  35. 35

ok, this really upset me. And he ended up receiving his supplies, so stop freaking people out Perez, this story made me almost cry.

  36. ennui says – reply to this

    36

Elliot shut the fuck up already. You've had more blessings than you deserve thus far. I wish you had went down in the rumble.
typical bitching moaning self centered whining Jew.

this is why people the world over loathe and despise you all.

  37. 37

There were a lot of artists in Viña del Mar because there was a music festival happening… Two of them (that I know of) drove to Argentina, took each one a private plane and are safe and sound in Colombia and Mexico… All he has to do is take the freaking road and he'll be back home in no time…

  38. @v@ says – reply to this

    38

If he doesn't accept the drive to Argentina, perhaps someone in Mendoza could drive some supplies back to HIM. If it were me, I'd so take the ride to Argentina instead of sitting put, as the airport doesn't look to be opening up yet.

  39. 39

Seriously?? It's a shameful situation, but come on! Think about all the other non-celebrities in Chile who are probably in the same dire situation, if not worst.

  40. 40

You didn´t posted my previous post. Find out first, then copy and paste. He got his medicine yesterday, and where he is, teh situation is almost NORMAL.
I´m from Chile and I feel disgusted about your ignorant comments. 500 miles from where he is it is the real problem and if he wanted to go to a pahmacy and get the medicine he could. Or go to the chilean asociation of diabetes (because we do have medicine here, diabetic people don´t die). You are an ignorant, and stop copy and paste. You are not a journalist, you are a crappy blogger, which doesn´t even do his job the right way. In CHile we are a educated, well living country. The earthquake we had was worst than Haiti, and we are about 1,000 dead toll… nothing compared to Haiti. As a latin you shoud know, or just maybe go to wikipedia and copy and paste the info about Chile.

  41. 41

does he have some disease that deforms his face? this dude gets uglier and uglier

  42. 42

Re: TheMrsBradPitt – Type 1 diabetics can only go a day without insulin before slipping into a coma - no amount of low carb eating wil save them

  43. 43

i didn't know that elliot has perform in chile
    please come to argentina
    we love you ♥
(well at leat you have 1 fan here)
    =P

    ps: please help chile =(

  44. 44

Perez, this may or may not register with you, but CELEBRITIES ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE UNIVERSE. I am in Chile (one of the lucky ones, I wasn't very affected), but the town my family's vacation home is in is utterly ruined. Hit by the 'quake then a tsunami. So if you dare say this guy is worse off than those who live in Pelluhue, Curanipe, Chanco, Copticura, Talca and Cauquenes, then be aware that I have great motivation to jump on a plane and SLAP YOU.
Anyway, though Santiago was still greatly affected, hospitals are all in an okay condition (my aunt, grandma and grandpa are doctors, so I would know). They are open and functional, though crowded. This guy is just crying for attention. He's worse than you.
Oh, and someone said that it wasn't so bad in Santiago. They would be 100 percent wrong. It may not have been as bad as in other places, but it wasn't just a shake. Ignorance isn't nice. Do your research.

  45. 45

He got pumps and supplies delivered to him yesterday. So No Worries! = )

  46. 46

    I'll personnaly save him.

  47. 47

Re: @v@ – It's not like there isnt any insulin in Chile and he was in Viña del Mar where everything was working normally the day after. I say, attention whore.
