Kid Directs Air Traffic At JFK!

Must have been "Take Your Kid To Work" day or something, but the Federal Aviation Administration is pissed!

A child's voice was recorded directing the air traffic at JFK airport in New York City, but he obviously has his father or guardian assisting him as heard on the tape.

Regardless of the pilots finding it funny, the FAA doesn't think it's a laughing matter releasing the following statement:

“Pending the outcome of our investigation, the employees involved in this incident are not controlling air traffic. This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees.”

Whoops! But we think it's kinda cute and so do others in the tape — check it out above!

    4. 4

The child was in a restricted area and was a distraction. Someone needs to get suspended over this incident.

look..when a story has been all over broadcast news the day before, I don't need you to post an old story like this

    6. 6

OMG!!!! Shut the fuck up about this already!!!!! Who gives a flying fuck that the kid was told what to say by his Dad and it was cute. Whoopty Doo!!!!! I am so sick of this story!!!!

    7. 7

cute?? thats something you dont mess around with. perez you have the mental capacity of an 8 year old dumbass

    8. 8

The pilots' amusement made me laugh.

    9. 9

      old news

    10. 10

This is no different than a surgeon allowing someone to ask for an instrument other than herself/himself. The surgeon is alway in control and it would only happen if the surgeon was comfortable with the circumstances.

The pilots and ATCs are trained professionals and obviously the interaction was of benefit to all involved. The FAA needs to look other way; it's a non-event.

I think it was cute …
hope they don't get in trouble for it

    15. 15

The persons responsible for this irratic behavior should be fired…life isn't a video game…other people's lives were @ stake…

    16. 16

It's not like the guy left his kid in charge and left the room. Geez.

    17. 17

There is no harm to it. Its not like the kid is doing it with out supervision. People are overreacting to this. I've been up in the trafficking tour several times throughout my life and I really don't feel the controller was putting the lives of people in jeopardy.

    18. 18

      its SUPER cute : )

    19. 19

oh fabulous… I'm flying out of JFK this Saturday morning!!

    20. 20

When I first heard this, I thought wow, this kid must be having the time of his life. Then I realized that it was a serious offense and the guy could get fired. It was a busy airport and it could have caused a huge distraction. Hearing a kid could have even made them unsure or think it was a prank. I hope he told all the pilots what he was doing before hand. If so, I don't see a problem.

    21. 21

The guy should be FIRED. This is not cute. Would you think it would be "cute" if people were killed as a result of an error being made by an untrained child? What if your fat ass was on one of those planes? When people's lives are at stake, something like this is not "cute". Fuck you Perez.

Oh yeah, and you are a few days late with this news anyway

    22. 22

He said exactlly what he was told to say. so what's the big deal?
there's always the "what if he didn't say what he was supposed to?" well he did. Obviously his dad trusted him enough to say a few words.
No reason for the dad to lose his job over this.

    23. 23

      soo frikkin cute
      but uhhhhh…
maybe they could just PRETEND he's directing air traffic next time
i doubt he'd know the difference

    24. 24

America needs more loving fathers like this guy!
The kids are lucky to have a dad that is so enthusiastic about teaching them his profession; it's a shame that the media is runing what could have been a fond memory between a father and his children. He was in control the entire time, and wouldn't have let them report emergency instructions. Seriously, the instruction that was given was simply a formality (only stated 'for the record") and the pilots were already aware of their surroundings being "clear"
I remember sitting on my dad's lap, holding the steering wheel of the lawn mower when I was young, while cutting the grass, and thought it was so cool. I think it was a mistake ONLY because he put his JOB at risk. Other than that I think it is a shame that people are making a big deal out of this.
Plus we need more air traffic controllers, desperately. Maybe this will influence them to pursue a career in the industry!

    25. 25

      Re: unreal5511
There were no lives at stake you fucking idiot. They were simply relaying a message, not making a judgment call. It's not like they were diverting planes from collision; only advising pilots that they were clear AT THE DISCRETION OF THEIR FATHER

    26. 26

I hope the air traffic controller that allow his child to do this is fired. What a stupid stunt!

    27. 27

No harm, no foul… something could have gone wrong, such as a pilot misinterpreting the child's message, but the father was clearly in control.

The father should be reprimanded, not fired. Reprimanding him will set an example– so other air traffic controllers dont bring their kids to the microphone– and punish him for taking a safety risk. Firing is over-the-top and just unnecessary.

    28. 28

Just goes to show you that people need to take a big chill pill, the poor kid only said what dad told him to and everyone knew what was going on. Jerks..can't anyone bring their kids to work anymore? I work in a major metro hospiatl in my city, if i brought my niece to work i'd probably get dismissed for violating HIPPA even though all my niece would do is watch me work and never see any actual patient info, america needs to lighten up.

    29. 29

Distract the pilot when I'm not a passenger on the plane!!!!!
Get your kid to do that with a sesna and daddy's in the captain's chair.
      Play pretend!

    30. 30

Re: LaGatita – Go to hell you douche comet. Kids are going to be kids and sometimes they say things that they are not told to say. Would you want to be on a plane being directed by a kid? Probably not. You people defending the parent should all be on the next plane that goes down. With Perez piloting.

    31. 31

Wow Perez. This hit the news early yesterday morning. It would be who of you to be more time efficient with the things you post.

    32. SNM25 says – reply to this

      32

I am an Air Traffic Controller and to be honest, this is no different then when you have a new trainee sitting on the mic. They're fed everything and have to repeat to the pilots what you said verbatim. Sounds like this kid didn't do half bad. If you noticed the Dad stepped in and said anything that was not "contact departure" or "clear for takeoff". Lighten up people!

    33. 33

Jees moron, do at least a shred of research before you report news won't you? The story was all over the news, so it certainly shouldn't have been hard for you to at least know what you are talking about. Yes, it was indeed "take your kid to work day", and it was the child's Father that was directing him. He also did not interact with ANY planes that were in the air, only with ones taxiing on the ground. This was indeed a very bad decision on the Father's part, but the FAA is only making a spectacle of it to cover their own asses from backlash. The kid probably did a better job than half the people working there.

unreal5511: Get over yourself dipshit. Do you really think the kid was making the calls himself?? What an ass.

    34. 34

You're a day late and a dollar short on this story aren't you? Not surprising.

    35. 35

flying is already scary enough! what a fucking bunch of morons.

    36. 36

PEOPLE NEED TO LIGHTEN THE FUCK UUUPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    37. 37

p.s.: the video doesn't even work
perez ur videos are always fucked up/suckk

    38. 38

i don't think this is cute at all. an air traffic control tower is not the place for fun and games. no wonder the rest of the world looks at us and shakes their heads.

    39. 39

CUTE? You know, it's this kind of thing (adults thinking this is ok) that enrages me more than the actual crime. It's about as cute as your tax man letting his 7-yr-old compile your tax return. Or your surgeon allowing his 10-yr-old to close while he scrubs up. It's NOT CUTE. There are other people working a very serious job around this clown that allowed his kid to "play air traffic controller". Do you think they might have been distracted?

    40. 40

      Woww, way to over react.

    41. 41

I think it's funny how all these idiots misguided by the overreacting media are making a big deal out of something so silly.
It's not like the child is taking control over the tower…he's being told what to say, and in case of a real emergency his dad could immediately step in. I see no harm in it, what's harmfull is the media making it a big deal. I read an interview with the pilot and he mentioned that he didn't think it was a big deal, and in no time, it was harmfull. i think more parents should give their kids their time. My mom is a doctor, and she took me to the delivery room a few times, and let me watch when she was in the O.R. any kid is lucky to be able to come to work with their parents. whoever is saying the guy should be fired, is just jealous they didn't have a parent so loving!

    42. 42

This is NOT funny. It IS unprofessional and incredibly dangerous.

What's next?? Some surgeon is going to let his five year old finish an operation?

It's the same damn thing. Hope they get fired.

    43. 43

Its not like they're parents were in the cafeteria eating lunch…they were standing right next to them…and the pilots have to repeat the orders so if there was any confusion they would know it. I'm also sure it wasn't prime time air traffic. He told a few planes to take off. Not a big deal! It shouldn't become a normal thing, but this poor guy is gonna lose his job. So stupid.

    44. 44

Re: JJJJJR1 – GOOD. I hope he does lose his job. It's irresponsible behavior, and should not be allowed.

How do you know that the parent was right there? I'm sure he was, but how can you say that? " He told a few planes to take off. Not a big deal!" WHAT? You must have been taking the same kool aid as Perez when he said it was "cute". I'm sure all of these idiots saying it was ok would be the first to step up and sue if someone they cared about were killed in an accident as a result of such carelessness. Take your kid to work day? Whatever. This ain't Mickey D's folks, this is a serious job.

    45. 45

      that's scary.

    46. 46

NO,NO NO. Just NO. Was an Air Traffic Controller in the military. There are books thicker than Bibles that have rules on how to be professional with proper phraseology and all. Yes it may have been amusing, but all it takes is one missed transmission by the dad or one misunderstanding of a transmission by a pilot and something serious could happen. The controller even has to correct himself at one point. Would you feel comfortable with a kid directing an air craft you were a passenger on? Not me.

    47. 47

Re: FloFer – Your mom the doctor let you WATCH, she didn't let you actually deliver or operate, sounds ridiculous right? So is having a child speak to air craft in what was supposed to be an FAA regulated environment. There is nothing wrong with having the kid there; let him watch, listen to the pilots, look at the aircraft, interact with his dad, don't let the kid do the job, it's was just irresponsible on the dad's and the supervisor's part. Just because a pilot was OK with it doesn't make it right. Rules for controllers are different than pilots and clearly stated. This was just wrong. Period.

    48. 48

      Re: unreal5511

      God thank you.

    49. 49

      its not cute its dangerous
but wth this is a celeb gossip site and your posting yesterday's news THAT WAS EVERYWHERE ELSE before posted here
      get with it

    50. 50

Re: unreal5511 – We know his father was next to him because you can hear him! I admit that it shouldn't be something that is commonplace but if it was SOOOO dangerous, then why weren't the pilots or the other air traffic controllers upset by it? They were saying "good job buddy" etc. Suspend the guy, fine him whatever. Make sure it doesn't happen again. But the guy wasn't intentionally putting people in danger. He was doing his job and his kid went to work with him that day. That's why I don't think he should be fired. Should the soccer mom on her fucking cell phone while driving a Suburban be banned from driving a car ever again? It's about perspective people. That soccer mom biatch is much more likely to run me off the road and kill me. It's not like the kid was checking luggage at security or flying the airplane himself.

    51. 51

So I have heard. Good job, kid, however, it's not in a kid's jurisdiction to direct traffic and the father should know better.
      Just sayin'. :p

    52. 52

wtf??? the kid was CLEARLY told what to say, and when to say it… it's not like they had him single handedly directing air traffic, dear god people need to lighten the hell up, no one was in danger here

    53. 53

typical fear based news and the morons who buy into it. Get everyone scared the next time they go on a plane!!! Next at 11, toothpaste that might kill you!!! AHHHH We're all doomed. Seriously people? Relax.

    54. 54

      i loled

    55. 55

WTF! Are you serious? Everybody needs to calm down and lighten up. Sorry you have a pole up your ass that you can't see that this was cute and funny.
