Did You Steal Your Idea For Avatar, James Cameron???

| Filed under: Film FlickersLegal Matters

Of course he did! Have you not seen FernGully? Pocahontas? Hello! All the same shiz!

But while we all see that James Cameron IMAX epic has been done before, a man in China is claiming that James stole the story of Avatar directly from him and is suing him for a bundle.

Author Zhou Shaomou insists that Cameron's blockbuster is "80%" similar to the key plot points and elements found in his 1997 novel Tale Of The Blue Crows. Zhou spoke with the China Daily and explained:

"It tells the story of an epic journey taken by six astronauts to a distant planet which is home to a race of blue-skinned beings. I wrote in my novel that their space journey took them six years but in Cameron's movie the journey takes them five years, nine months and 22 days. I was shocked when I first saw that. It is too close."

Due to all the stunning similarities, Zhou is looking for over $145 million dollars in copyright infringement.

Yeah, good luck with that pal! You'll be lucky if they pay your airfare to come to El Lay so James Cameron can laugh in your face personally.

I'd laugh so hard if he actually won though !

  2. 2

    if it's a published novel…might have a case

  3. 3

Wanna bet is ex wife was in on this getting exposed? But these types of cases are extremely difficult to prove. And it is ironic that it is a Chinese person (with all the stealing of software, music and film that goes on in China) who is claiming this. I need to go see Avatar - I can't believe I haven't seen it yet.

  4. 4

i just find it interesting that you think this warrants no case but god forbid anyone wear uglyass rabbit ears a la lady gaga. cuz you know….fabric ears emulating those of an extremely populated animal is TRUE originality.

  5. 5

The cover art on the book is pretty similar, too. There's been a lot of internet articles on this since last year when the trailers came out. I think he's paid this guy off, but it's not a pretty situation for the film makers. Word out there is that Cameron stole about 80% of the story and the description of the characters etc. But because of the changes to the other 20% of the film, the Chinese man won't stand a chance. Sad.

  6. 6

I HEARD SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE."DANCES WITH WOLVES".

  7. 7

He really stone his idea from the blueberry girl in Willy Wonka :)

  8. 8

Cameron was successfully sued for stealing the story for Terminator from a novel, so this isn't so shocking.

  9. 9

You know the stories are similar but it's not like it is ALL that original! Besides it's not the story that was so special… it was actually kinda cheesy…. it was the visuals! That's what made the movie so much money! Not the stupid blue alien thing

  10. 10

Well, no one said that the story was an original ideal.

  11. 11

I hardly doubt that James Cameron stole this guys idea. I can't even find this book on amazon. It sounds really bad

  12. 12

Take that China! You pilfer stuff from us all the time, steal our ideas that have supposed patent protection and skirt litigation. How does it feel??

  13. 13

$145 million is pocket change to Cameron…

  14. 14

LOL How about the fact that Cameron's blockbuster is 80% similar to FERN GULLY!!!!!!!

  15. 15

Oh whatever. Avatar's storyline was nothing special to start with; what made it big was the special effect and Cameron's name. But yeah, it wouldn't hurt to ask some money from Cameron.

  16. 16

Cameron's a moron who makes trashy films for the uneducated lower masses and eco-terrorists.

  17. 17

I love fern gully used to watch that when I was a kid

  18. 18

Ummm…are you living in the past, Perez? This is old news, kiddo.

  19. 19

It's the same story/setting as Fern Gully from the early 90s

  20. 20

Wow, he really looks like an old lesbian in that picture.

  21. 21

James Cameron needs a good smacking around. I hope this guy beats the crap out of him in court.

  22. 22

if this wins best picture i will puke.. forget that he stole the idea from this book, how about he stole the plot from "Dances with Wolves". the idea is exactly the same.
Michelle Rodriguez painting her face and chopper at the end to fight against her own people was so cheesy. great special effects no doubt and worth seeing but it's a familiar plot with a lot of cheesy scenes.

  23. 23

omgawwww you thought of FernGully too!?!?!?!?! no waaaaay hahaha that's why i

  24. 24

Four days since I uploaded my avatar and I still get a palm tree there. Nice work Perez.

  25. 25

Anyone with a brain knows that Avatar is a piece of shit. It's politics are so blatant and it looks like it was made by some kid with ADHD. I'm not impressed by 3d shit; it dosen't make up for a stale story. The avatar script is HARDLY groundbreaking. It is just Pocahantus with blue people. I really want The Hurt Locker to win because it's a real movie adressing real issues, it would also be the first female to win an oscar for best director. The woman is also james cameron's ex wife, which would make it all the more glorious because James Cameron is a huge asshole

It should be pretty darn easy to prove in court using copyright infringement rubrik or however they determine these things. Lotsacash at stake. Yikes.

  27. 27

correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall hearing that James had been working and developing Avatar for the past 15 years, which would pre-date this man's claim as his novel was published 13 years ago.

  28. 28

I hope he wins his suit. If the novel is published, he certainly has a case. Dismissing it as a frivolous lawsuit is a rash assumption, Perez– we're not talking about effing pop music here.

As a writer, I hated that I loved Avatar. The story is so disgustingly simple and borrowed at that. The visuals made the movie. Period.

  29. 29

I hope Cameron loses! I would love to see that douche brought down a notch or 2. He is a legendary prick in the industry, so it's nice to see Karma paying him a visit.

  30. 30

Thinking about it, it's kinda like suing Coldplay for copyright infringment… there's so much borrowed, where the eff do you start figuring out what parts came from whom?

I think I could sue… my cat looks just like a Na'vi. LOL.

  31. 31

Avatar is basically star trek combined with star wars, so yeah, he kinda did steal it.. even if it wasn't this blue crow thing

  32. 32

    Thief. Pilferer. No talent.

  33. 33

Re: TotalTrash – #25 - Avatar SUCKS! No intelligent man or woman will say Avatar was amazing. It was average at best. Boring.

  34. ozmed says – reply to this

    34

Oh come on, the plot of the movie is standard fair. I could say Avatar is a ripoff of Battle for Terra. Live James alone and let him enjoy his millions.

  35. 35

Really? Well check out the book "Call Me Joe" by Poul Anderson which was written in 1957. It's about a paralyzed man who remotely controls a blue-skinned alien. I think the Chinese guy ripped his book from Anderson's. You must give credit where credit is due!!

  36. 36

Avatar is Dancing with Wolves, Pocahontas, and every indian movie ever made without the indians. It is only good with 3-D glasses on.

  37. 37

This wont be the first time. Cameron was sued by Harlan Ellison for The Terminator being VERY "similar" to a short story of his titled "The Soldier" Cameron had to give him credit in the end!

  38. 38

this guy just seems like a cheeseball. He takes himself way to serious.

  39. 39

Wow, people are just absolutely ridiculous now a days. So, if a movie has such vague similarities as this, then that means people are allowed to sue each other? Every idea has been used in one form or another, but this guy from China who wrote a book that probably only a handful of people read, majority probably Chinese, attacks Avatar for having blue creatures and involving space?? Just sad.

  40. 40

Has no one noticed that these storylines "stole" from the reality of colonial raping and pillaging of indigenous societies? It cracks me up that so many Americans are reminded of Hollywood movies and not our country's actual shame.

  41. 41

I hope the guy wins just cuz Jim Cameron is an idiot, but this plot is old crap anyway

  42. 42

    Dayumm

  43. 43

who gives a shit. the coolest part of that movie was the effects, not the plot. Most movies have a plot-a-like. Might as well have ferngully sue pocohantas if your going to worry about that shit
