Filed under: Film Flickers > Johnny Depp

The initial numbers for Alice In Wonderland are out of control!

The majorly hyped Tim Burton 3-D flick brought in a massive $45 million on Friday alone, and there's speculation that the movie could bring in $115-$120 million by the weekend's close!

Which would be even bigger than Avatar's opening weekend!!

Amazing!!

    2. 2

      It's Johnny Depp! HELLLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!

    3. 3

That would be very impressive! Avatar has made so much money and been number one for how long! WOW , I dunno. I do know that I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT! ;)

    4. 4

I saw it on Friday afternoon in 3D and even though I liked it, overall it was quite the disappointment :(
      .
Still, I give it 7* out of 10*
      .

    5. 5

      FAIL!!!11
      ILL JUST SAY IT NOW!!!!!!

      EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!

    6. 6

Re: HonestyPlease – Hellllloooooooooo, Johnny Depp's last movie that Dillinger flick was a complete FLOP :(

    7. 7

I hope it does. Hell if it makes a billion i'll go out and see it for sure

    8. 8

      i believe it…i can't find a single theather that hasn't sold out

    9. 9

Never comment before but had to on this, just saw the film today and was so so disappointed. Really love Burton films but this movie I felt was so empty and disjointed.

    10. 10

      this movie was great!

      11

It could have been bigger, see the U.K.

    12. 12

Re: chunkylulu – Really! O' NO! I hate that! I will wait till it dies down! :)

    13. 13

      YAY!!! Finally!!

    14. 14

Re: SpaceyBliss – O' NO! I hope I don't feel the same! :( I always loved Alice in Wonderland growing up! And was hoping to see some RAVING reviews here :( ! Shame.

    15. 15

I saw it lastnight and thought it was pretty good. Helena Bohnam Carter stole the movie…she was AMAZING!!! Johnny Depp was just as eccentric as usual, perfect part for him!

    16. 16

I didn't really have high expectations for it….so maybe that is why I thought it was good. I'm not normally a huge Tim Burton fan.

    17. 17

of course its going to beat that blue crap, who would pay to see that?

    18. 18

Saw it Friday, thought it was boring as hell. Great visually, but lame..

    19. 19

Lol, it wouldn't be too impressive if it beat Avatar in the Opening Weekend. What made avatar so big is that it CONTINUED to be #1 for so long, constantly raking in money. Most movies drop like 65% after opening weekend, Avatar dropped like, 6%. Oh, and your precious New Moon dropped like 90%

    20. 20

I saw Alice in Wonderland on Friday and liked it, but I think Avatar was waaaaaaay better, so I would be upset if Alice in Wonderland made more money than Avatar.

    21. 21

saw the movie last night. Not bad, but not what I had expected either.
If it would beat Avatar that would be amazing, since I didn't like that movie at all. Good luck to Tim Burton and the gang. If anyone can pull it off it's them with this movie

    22. 22

Re: SammiDe – It'll make more money than "Avatar" did in its first 3 days, that's for sure. It won't catch up to the $700 million + that Avatar has made however.
      Re: cute_puppy
I agree Mr. Puppy. It wasn't all that great. Entertaining, but could've been way better.

    23. 23

I took my daughter to see this movie and we were both dissapointed. We ended up leaving the movie before it was even over because we were both bored. We just saw Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squekeul and my daughter was glued to that and even I thought it was a cute movie. but this was not as good as I expected. I wish I had not wasted my money. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

    24. 24

Because this movie is actually good!
I ddidn't, and still don't, get what Avatar is/was about.
Johnny Depp [&Tim Burton] are ahmayzing! FTW!

    25. 25

Re: OpenYourEyesandMind – yeah I have Avatar bootlegged and have seen it on my HUMONGOUS TV (lol) w/surround sound and I don't see the big deal about it! I guess I am just not into flying to another planet and turning blue! LOL!

    26. 26

Re: SammiDe – my comments are always getting linked! LOL! Wth whatever, it's cute I guess! ;)

    27. 27

Alice in Wonderland is NOTHING like AVATAR! AIW was okay, but overall a true disappointment. It was kinda dull.. The hype wont last. It doesnt come anywhere close to Avatar.

    28. 28

The special effects are crazy good. Johnny Depp was damn creepy but in a good way. I didn't like the film though. It was boring. Kind of a waste of time. Well then again I didn't like Avatar either.

    29. 29

      Avatar sucked.

I just saw Alice a couple hours ago, it was AMAZING. The 3D effects were so intense. 10 out of 10 from me and my friends for sure!

    30. 30

Re: vincenotvance – Thanks. It's been a while since someone called me Mr. Puppy ;)

    31. 31

i didnt think the movie looked too good and thot it wld probably be overrated
but w/e johnny depp is fiiiine AND hes a good actor

    32. 32

People weren't as hyped for Avatar because it looked bad, but then they heard how good it was and started going. It blew up. Alice in Wonderland was so built up that everyone is going to see it, but they're coming out disappointed.

    33. 33

That poster actually looks like Madonna…right down to the gap in her front teeth.

    34. 34

please let it be… James Cameron is a Ass-Hooooooooole :P

    35. 35

Avatar had a bad opening weekend, or at least worse than expected. If I'm not mistaken, it made more on its second week? So this means absolutely nothing.

    36. 36

I just saw it today..the matinee show, got there half n hour early and the theatre was packed before I even got in. I liked it, but I didn't think it was worth the $14. I thought it would be more 3D like things flying out of the screen and what not…it was OK

    37. iorio says – reply to this

      37

I seriously hope its bigger than Avatar because Johnny Depp was amazing in it !

    38. 38

Avatar is disappointing to those who seen it the next weeks because the story is too similar to Dancing with Wolves and Pocahtas. I seen it in 2-D though so I didn't get the full animated experience. There are a lot of movies with bigger opening weekend than Avatar.

    39. 39

I can't say I'm surprised… Alice in Wonderland was an AMAZING movie.
however, I doubt that there's any chance in it beating Avatar over all.
They're both great movies, but the only person who can beat James Cameron, is James Cameron.

    40. 40

Thats cause it cost more to see it. I paid $12.50 to see Avatar Imax 3D & $14 for Alice, Avatar was better 3d FOR SURE

    41. 41

I saw Alice yesterday and it was AMAZING. I loved it. BUT to be fair Avatar's opening weekend numbers weren't as amazing as it could have been because most of the northeast was covered in a 3day blizzard.

    42. 42

this movie was horrible!!!! i was soooo disappointed!! like most tim burton movies….it was overhyped!!! avatar was at least worth watching!

    43. 43

p.s. this was my first time commenting too! i had to make a profile to talk about how "shiteous" this movie was!

    44. 44

just saw it, i could not have been more disappointed. and im a HUGE tim burton fan… :(

    45. 45

      i

    46. 46

Avatar was also so controversial and people all over the world were either LOVING or HATING it! So I don't think Alice in Wonderland will top that! Avatar was and is a worldwide sensation!!!

    47. 47

over hyped in 3d and for being s movie you cant sneak in too you have to pay for the film

    48. 48

it was so much better than avatar! it had an original story line and not no ferngully tree hugger stuff!

    49. 49

Went to see Alice and Wonderland and was not disappointed. My little nephews and I loved it! Even my mom and she isn't a Tim Burton fan. I'd go see it again.

    50. 50

Too bad it's just a horrible film. Boring.

    51. 51

      Alice>Avatar

    52. 52

Saw it on 3D the effects were cool but the movie was pretty bad..nothing to do with the original, least to say the person next to me feel asleep.

    53. 53

I already saw the movie hours ago and OMG it was AWESOME!!!
It was my first 3D movie ever!! and as well thanks to the amazing Avril Lavigne for soundtrack it sound AMAZING at the end!!! EPIC

      The threater was SOLD OUT!

    54. 54

I don;t what movie most of ya'll saw, but AIW that i saw WAS AMAZING. i was glued, laughed, cried of excitement, and was MORE than i expected. I've been waiting for this movie since forever, cause I LOVE helena, johnny and tim burton together, they're geniuses, and i was beginning to be worried that i would be disappointed, but it was better than some reviews said it was. the movie was amazing, i hope it does better than that crapatar - just like pocahontas with aliens, retarded movie. anyway

    55. 55

      Re: lovers

Original story line? A good leader versus a bad leader with a scary monster? Yeah that's totally new. Avatar may have been like Pocahontas in a way, but having all of the life on a planet being connected as if it were one organism is not exactly an overdone concept.

    56. 56

      Cool. I loved the movie.

    57. 57

Uhhhh Avatar opened during a snow storm…. So of course it could happen! :p

    58. 58

I went to the 3D showing of this movie and I loved it. My Neice whom I took with me who's 6 also loved it. I hope that Alice in Wonderland can beat Avatar. My Neices' favotire park was the Mad Hatter's dance.

    59. 59

      WoW sounds cool.
In my town we are not able to watch movies in 3D….i was MAD.

    60. 60

Just saw it..Loved it, but thought they could have done so much more with it. Johnny Depp was amazing and Mia Whatzername was a faboush Alice.. Helena did steal the show

    61. 61

      Costumes were amazing too!

    62. 62

      Cant wait!

    63. 63

Since you called Avatar a failure after the opening weekend, according to your logic this movie is a failure. You sure made yourself look like an asshole, douchebag. lmao

    64. 64

don't look for Alice to have any legs… Mediocre reviews don't help either . It will have a few good weeks and a pretty gradual decline. It will have nowhere near Avatars run.

    65. 65

Re: Miss_J – do you realize what an ill informed douche you are? Like it or not Avatar is huge.

    66. 66

sorry but in the long run avatar is unbeatable, at lease for a good few years anyway

    67. 67

i hope so… Avatar is not so good, but alice in wanderland i just love it!
      i love tim n johnny too =)

    68. 68

wow he looks like Madonna lol

    69. 69

wow… i relle wanna c it nd i heard dat avatar was bad story line wise but it graphics were amazing

    70. 70

      The movie was… okay.
      Didn't meet my expectation.
I guess Sharon Osbourne is an idiot for saying that this movie actually makes Avatar looks like Flintstones.
Jeez, this movie is NOTHING compare to Avatar.
Her taste of movie is so YUCK.

    71. 71

Alice was disappointing and Avatar was amazing. If Alice wasn't produced by Disney I think they could have done more with it - it was a bit too slow and lacked substance.

    72. 72

Boriiiing. Although Alice looks good, it seems every latest film out breaks box office records.

    73. 73

saw it :IMAX 3D and it kicked SERIOUS ASS. Anyone who didn't think so is LAME.

    74. 74

The reason that Alice will make a lot of money (aside from it being an interesting and exciting movie) is that there is nothing out there to see. People want to go to the movies and everything right now sucks. Bigger than Avatar? I don't know about that. But then again, didn't you say that Avatar was going to bomb after it's "poor" opening weekend of a mere $73 million dollars???? Really, Perez, you are losing your touch, BIG TIME.

    75. 75

I saw the movie on friday and was really disappointed. I expected so much more, the story was kind of lame and compared to Avatar, the 3D effects where just boring.

    76. ddbby says – reply to this

      76

So what if it beats Avatar on the opening weekend. It will have a big drop by next week. I agree with some of the other comments…it was disappointing and boring.

    77. 77

Certain movies or music are greatly enhanced, with the right drug, to be appreciated.
I never "got" The Beatles when they went that crazy talk route, 'cuz I never did weed.
This one looks like a bad acid trip.

    78. delan says – reply to this

      78

Avatar has not fallen out of the top 5 since it opened over two months ago. Plus the word of mouth campaign that boosted this movie is unprecedented. Avatar is the movie of the decade, hands down.

    79. 79

Wow, i seen it on Friday, absolutely amazing! Loved it… especially Johnny Depp

    80. 80

It was a great movie so I can believe it!

    81. 81

I saw this movie last night and thought it was crap. It was so overhyped. I'll admit the graphics and art were good but other than that, it was a disappointment. It was slow and the acting was seemed forced.

    82. 82

The problem for MANY years with gauging the popularity of films, past and present, is that they're tallying the GROSS and not telling us the NUMBER OF TICKETS SOLD! Kind of like how the academy tells us who was nominated for Oscars, but doesn't let you see the actual nomination/award vote counts. Alice appeals to many children, who'll have to go with an adult and that increases the number of paying viewers. The price of tickets will keep going up, up, UP! And the best way to determine a film's popularity is: look at the population when it came out and figure out how many PEOPLE actually paid to see it. Just some thoughts. I haven't seen Avatar and have no plans to. The higher price of IMAX 3D tickets is lowered, at least where I live, on a certain day of the week, in our case, Tuesday. I'm going to pay for the privilege of watching Alice In Wonderland in the optimal IMAX format, which is the best way to see a movie if you can. It made The Dark Knight even better than it would have been otherwise. Too bad that whole film wasn't in IMAX!

    83. 83

Re: cute_puppy – that makes noooo sense. if you liked it how are you disappointed overall?!??

    84. 84

      I LOVE JOHNNY DEPP.

    85. 85

Saw this on the weekend and it is CRAP - one of the worst films I've seen in a long time. Very disappointing.

    86. @v@ says – reply to this

      86

The visuals are stunning. Period. The story of Alice is classic, but not for short attention spans.

    87. 87

people are talking alot of shit about the movie, yeah it has its flaws but it was way better then Transformers part 2 and james cameron is an a hole. Long live Johnny!

    88. 88

Re: Ooh la la – I know u! haha

    89. 89

I saw this today and it was such a huge disappointment. I think this movie could have been great but the script was so unintresting and turned into another Tim Burton "look what I can do with CGI" crap. Tim Burton gets way to much credit for the overproduced crap he puts out.

    90. 90

I have always hated the story, but I loved Tim Burton's version. Johnny Depp was brilliant. I kept forgetting that it was actually him.

    91. 91

no way this movie will beat Avatar, there are MANY negative reviews about this movie. I saw it last night and it was a huge disappointment. and Johnny Depp didn't really do his best in his part.

    92. 92

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, it is bound to be amazING.

    93. 93

      The movie was awful!

    94. 94

the problem with johnny depp now is that he plays so many offbeat roles that they are no longer offbeat or edgy. he basically plays edward siserhands in every role.

    95. 95

this movie was great. the 3D portion was a bit disappointing, not really worth the extra money but overall a great film full of brilliant actors. johnny depp was unbelievable and so convincing in this

    96. 96

Keep in mind that opening weekend of Avatar, NYC area had a pretty big snow storm and NYers dont do well in snow.

    97. 97

my mom has a guy who gets her high quality bootles dvd (yes, i know it's illegal) and sometimes i get them for movies i'm interested in seeing but don't want to pay an assload at the theater.

but i'm going to see Alice in the theaters this week b/c there's no way i could ever rip off the genius of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp…especially if Danny Elfman is doing the music. that trio is DIVINE moviemaking personfied and everything they do together is awesome.

    98. 98

      Re: Myzaree

Avatar is like a poorly written sci-fi. It copied any native cry that whites took something of theirs. We've heard this for quite a few years, even before Pocahontas…and I say sci-fi because the blue things are pretty much aliens, and the concept for it, well if you like neat concepts.. watch a few sci-fi films, you'd be thrilled with the things they come up with..so overall even the concept isn't outstanding and technically in reality things are really connected together maybe not literally with plugs but yes, they are.

Keep in mind, AiW never was original, why? Because a stoner originally wrote the story, NOT Tim Burton. If you don't like the generic bad vs. good, take it up with the guy who's been dead (the guy who wrote it).

Overall I went in to theaters expecting much less for AiW and came out absolutely thrilled. Never was a fan of the older movies of this particular story, however this one was done very well and was certainly not annoying.

ohh snow storm- excuses! Canada is like your snow storm 24/7 and we always manage to get to our destinations haha

    99. 99

I seen this movie lastnight, it was MIND BLOWING - loved it!!!

    100. 100

Oh my god I can't wait to see it! Is it good? Please review it on my site www.onesentencereview.com …
