It took them long enough!!!!

The Academy has finally apologized for omitting Farrah Fawcett from the "In Memoriam" segment on Sunday night's Oscars!

After days of criticism, executive director Bruce Davis has offered the following apology:

"There's nothing you can say to people, particularly to family members, within a day or two of the show that helps at all. They tend to be surprised and hurt, and we understand that and we're sorry for it."

Davis also added that her "remarkable television work" was honored at this year's Emmy's, which he believes was a more fitting arena for a tribute.

Hmmmm.

What do U think?

I agree. She was a television actress - If she worked in Films….I certainly don't remember it. The Emmys was more appropriate.

    2

When are they going to apologize for not mentioning Billy Mays ….. now that guy was an actor.

  3. 3

    They should have say something!

  4. 4

Charlies Angles may be iconic but it was hardly some of her best work. …movies like the Burning Bed and Jewel are her better work….

  5. 5

    I totally agree,
I love farrah but she was never a huge movie star or ever nominated for an oscar, why would she be mentioned?

  6. 6

I actually DO agree that the tribute she received at the Emmys was appropriate and enough. She was largely a television actress, after all. That said, I do wonder why Michael Jackson got a tribute at the Oscars. He wasn't a film actor. Yes, he had an incredible talent and was a world phenomenon. He did some brilliant videos. But an Oscar tribute? Not really appropriate. I'm sure there were other movie actors who died during the last year and were omitted from mention during the broadcast who deserved mention more than Jackson did. Just saying.

    7

I think that it is bull! That is not an apology.

  8. 8

Agreed. I love Farrah as much as the next person, but the Emmy tribute is the better fit. Arguably, Farrah's best work was in the Burning Bed….a TELEVISION movie.
Just because we've never heard of the lighting and sound directors from decades ago, doesn't mean they shouldnt be recognized. They worked hard at their craft and should be honored. Why doesn't anyone get that?

  9. 9

I think its really lame that they neglected to honor Farah Fawcett–she was in several big budget movies, and she shined in smaller films like Extremities and The Apostle.

  10. 10

They only have so much room and never include all the hollywood-ites that passed the year before.

  11. 11

    I think that's fair enough.

  12. 12

The more I think about this the more upset it makes me. Michael Jackson stared in one horrible movie in the 70's and made 3 or 3 guess appearances since. Gets ample time in the presentation!!! People do not at all think of him has a movie star. Yet Farrah was in like 12 or 13 movies and was not honored. Was this actually an over site on their part or did they really give it some consideration.

  13. 13

WOW, if people only knew how amazing Farrah was in the movie, "The Burning Bed". It was a low-budget film, I believe, but it was an unforgettable performance. How sad the Oscars did not recognize her. She is an icon. Every male and female on this planet, who are over the age of 30, knows who she is!!

  14. 14

Um…Michael Jackson wasn't in films per se and he was included in the segment. She should have been included whether she was in films or not. She was a part of the entertainment family. Also missing from the segment was Ed McMahon and Bea Arthur….what is wrong with the Academy?

  15. 15

If an actor is limited to one awards show tribute, then, yes, the Emmys were more appropriate. However, her work in Extremities was phenomenal (but only got her a Golden Globe nom) — i think she should have been included. Maybe instead of Michael Jackson…

  16. 16

I think give me a break. How do you explain Michael Jackson's inclusion then??

  17. 17

I think give me a break! How do they explain Michael Jackson's inclusion then?? I think someone just dropped the ball and now they're trying to brush it off.

  18. 18

She was a TV actress not a movie actress…

  19. 19

    What about Bea Arthur?

  20. 20

Re: Alliestp – Sorry Allie, but she was also in movies.—Perhaps not blockbuster films, but she was in a few. Check her out in some. I think you will agree that she deserved a nod.

  21. 21

She was a member of the Academy for 40 years and was in many movies…not just made for tv ones either. That's why she should've been mentioned.

That BS is not an apology. It's an attempt to placate folks. Looks like it worked on you, Perez. Others can see right through it.

  22. 22

What about Bea Arthur? The academy is SOOO full of shit it's not even funny

  23. 23

If that is the case then why was Michael Jackson's tribute at the GRAMMY's AND VMA's not enough of a fitting tribute??
Thats BS.. the argument that ppl would have been upset had he not been part of the Oscars is ridiculous because no one associates film work with MJ's work.
    Lame excuse Academy.

  24. 24

uhm BEA ARTHUR!!!! She was in MAME!! CLASSIC. if Michael can have a spot so can Bea and Farrah. Come on now. 6-7 extra seconds would not have made a difference, the OSCARS went over like 35 minutes anyways.

  25. 25

wasnt extremities at the theater, oh then she is an actress who should have been mentioned at the oscars tribute, im not buying it.

  26. 26

so they did purposely leave her out? crazy

  27. 27

She was in 17 films, she did plenty more than Michael Jackson. I call bullshiz.

  28. 28

Very backhanded apology. Bringing up the Emmy nod was pretty dispicible too (since they mentioned her at the Emmy's it was OK to ommit from the Oscars…. not cool!!!!

  29. 29

Re: kasperado – or maybe mention them both instead of leaving one out. please, michael jackson produced all those video's and he acted in the wiz along with his musical career. i wish ppl would leave mchael Jackson out of their attacks

  30. 30

    Re: fairwindsandfollowingseas
She was an actress of BOTH tv and film.
    She SHOULD have been included.
    Michael Jackson in THE WIZ??????
    REALLY????????

  31. 31

What about the old guy from Fantasy Island? He was a movie star too. They left him out too.

  32. 32

also keith carradine, what because his death was controversial they should leave him out. comeone they screwed up simply

  33. 33

NO It is NOT FAIR PEOPLE! She was a MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY FOR 40+ YEARS AND THAT COULDN'T RECOGNIZE AND THANK HER FOR THAT! ABSURD!!!

  34. 34

Re: VickyB – Exactly and nicely said!!! :)

  35. 35

then why did they mention Michael Jackson? I think the apology is to late.

  36. 36

I agree with that answer, but that being said…the Grammy was the place to honor Michael Jackson, not the Oscars. So then it follows, if you made time to honor Michael (a singer), then you have time for Farrah (an actress).

  37. 37

Yes. Just like the Grammy's was a more fitting arena for a tribute to Michael Jackson, but that didn't stop them from including him.

  38. 38

I thought that the tribute to Farrah at the Emmy's was much more appropriate than anything they would have done at the Oscars. I don't think Michael Jackson should have been recognized either. And are we all forgetting that in the Horror Film Tribute 'Twilight' made an appearance? That's almost worse than leaving stars like Farrah and Bea Arthur out of the tribute reel.

  39. 39

Re: SammiDe – AND THAT ! OMG AND THEY* YOU CAN SO TELL I AM SICK TODAY ! WTF I CAN BARELY TYPE AND ITS PISSING ME OFF! LOL!

  40. 40

    Just for the record…..
    Myra Breckinridge
    Logan's Run
    Somebody Killed Her Husband
    Saturn 3
    Sunburn
    Cannonball Run
    Extremities
    See You In The Morning
    Man Of The House
    The Cookout
    Brave Little Toaster
    Dr. T And The Women

These were all THEATRICALLY released films of Farrah Fawcett, the majority she had top billing). So this should put to rest (completely) the arguement she was just a "TV" actress.

Her films credits and the fact she was a member of the academy for over 40 years, makes her abscense from the tribute kind of appalling.

  41. 41

I agree with the Academy. She is best known for her work in the television arena.

  42. 42

I understand what they're saying….BUT why the HELL did they include Michael Jackson?!?! I don't recall one movie he's been in, and he had his tribute at the MUSIC AWARDS where it belonged… SO… In that case, she should've been included, as well… And, then, there's Bea Arthur, who should've gotten at least an honorable mention, as well…

  43. 43

She did a lot more films than Michael Jackson did - how insulting is that.

They should hang their heads in shame.

Go to IMBd, she did plenty of films.

  44. 44

Farrah appeared in 17 films, including the great Extremities and Logan's Run, as well as Myra Breckinridge, The Cannonball Run, Man of the House, and The Apostle.

Michael Jackson was only in the awful The Wiz.

Why does he merit a mention and she doesn't?

  45. 45

I totally agree that the Emmy's was the place to do this

  46. 46

It's not like it was the first time Farrah's entire career was forgotten.

  47. 47

Farrah got TOP BILLING over a legendary actor such as Kirk Douglas, in Saturn 3.
HUGE feat for a little 'ol tv actress!

The Academy's whole arguement is ridiculous!

  48. 48

She was as much a movie star as she was a television star. The Burning Bed put her on the map as far as acting skills go, but when she did Extremeties, people stood up and took notice. The Apostle… If you do not recall her being in a movie, it just means you were never a fan. She should have been honored. Michael Jackson only did 2 movies, 1 after he died, and he was shown. He was also honored on the Emmys.. So she should have been honored as well..

  49. 49

They mentioned Michal Jackson, the King of Pop, whose appearances in films were mainly due to song usage or biographical pieces. His film legacy was mainly an addition to his music legacy but didn't distinguish the two. Farrah was in many films including, Dr. T and the Women, Man of the house and sitcoms. I think it would be appropriate if you are comparing TV careers of both stars, and Michael Jackson was mentioned, Farrah should also be mentioned.

  50. 50

Umm, let's see, Farrah was in well over a dozen films… Does no one remember Extremities? No? Well you lived in a shell, under a blanket, under a rock! MJ, well, gee, I guess we'll always have The Whiz… Yea, that was a good one. But, let's face it, "The Academy" snubbed a number of talents that deserved recognition. Not having enough time to honor say a half dozen or so people who provided a significant contribution to the craft is crap. It was a choice - and an unpopular one at that. Do me a favor, drop the "in memory" part of the show of if it doesn't reflect the true loss of the community. Or, better yet, put a muzzle on the scripted, unfunny hosts. Just doing that alone would keep the award show in better pace. HELLO?! People don't tune in for the hosts… People want to see the talent get recognized.

  51. 51

Re: tom951 – You don't have to be an actor to be recognized by the academy. Jackson was nominated for an Oscar for best song at the age of 14 for the film Ben. He acted in Oz and Moonwalker. He wrote the sound track for Free Willy, contributed to the soundtrack for ET. He did a musical short film Ghosts. And Thriller has been declared a short film.

  52. Theo says – reply to this

    52

She was the leading lady to co-star Robert DuVall who won an oscar for The Apostle…it was a critically acclaimed film….I don't get it….she was in films.

  53. 53

If they start mentioning every movie cameo or bit part actor in a tribute ike this, you'd need a day for that alone. C mon, stop making shit outta nothing !

  54. 54

    well put.
when "leo" passes, should he be recognized on the emmy awards because he was on 'facts of life' ?
many of us were saddened by farrah's death and don't really feel an acknowledgement on some awards program makes it better or worse.
    funny harv.

  55. 55

Re: SatanInHighHeels – #40 - THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT! I CAN NOT BELIEVE PEOPLE AREN'T USING GOOGLE OR IMBd BEFORE ASSUMING SHE WAS ONLY ON TV! AND I BET ALL THOSE PEOPLE ARE IN THEIR 20's and UNDER TOO! LOL!

  56. 56

Michael Jackson was presented. He wasn't an actor, but a singer.
Plus at the French "Oscars" a couple of weeks ago (The Cesars), they didn't even do a "in memoriam" for Michael Jackson…

  57. 57

They could have shown Farrah, Bea Arthur & Ricardo Montalban in a matter of seconds. Leaving them out due to time restraints is total BS.

  58. 58

To my knowledge FF is a television actress.

  59. 59

FF's only theatrical film was "Saturn 5", which I believe was a flop.

  60. 60

    Re: lovesmadea
    You are completely clueless…"nuff said!

  61. 61

Poor attempt at an apology. Someone seriously messed up on this one. Especially since they included Michael Jackson. Poor…very poor planning on the entire Oscars this year.

  62. FMB says – reply to this

    62

Backhanded apology only after the firestorm. Fact remains, she was a member of the academy for 40 years, was in over a dozen theatrical released MOVIES and she was nominated for a Golden Globe and Independent Spirit award. FUCK Bruce Davis, FUCK the Academy, and FUCK Oscar. It would have taken all of 5 seconds to flash her beautiful smile as Holly from Logan's Run but they are still trying to justify their INEXCUSABLE OMISSION. SICK FUCKS!!!

  63. 63

She did one TV show for one season.

    She did approx. 27 movies.

She was also a member of the Academy for years!

Bottom line….they are a bunch of angry, demented and chauvinistic old men.

  64. 64

they are full of shit. michael jackson did one freaking movie.

  65. 65

SHE WAS A FUCKING MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY, BRUCE DAVIS IS A PRICK AND A A HALF, THEY SCREWED FARRAH AND SHOULD MAKE UP FOR IT NEXT OSCAR TELECAST

  66. 66

Did they apologize for omitting Ricardo Motalban or Bea Arthur? Nope, I don't think so.

  67. 67

    What about Bea Arthur?!

  68. 68

Why did he even bother with such a disrespectful apology!
Shame on Bruce Davis and the Academy!

  69. 69

Sorry, but she was also a movie actress - and an icon - and she should have been recognized. They waste time on stupid patter, a horror movie tribute, a separate tribute to John Hughes, a stupid dance number - and yet no love for Farrah or Beatrice, and no onstage moment for Bacall or Corman. Tacky and thoughtless.

  70. 70

P.S. Why can't she have 2 tributes - one at the Emmys and one at the Oscars?
Also: Michael Jackson was honored at the Grammys and MTV and VH1.
Since he was more known for music than film, why didn't the Academy's 'logic' extend to him?

  71. 71

NOT an apology! If I say "I'm sorry it rained during your pool party," I'm not claiming responsibility for the weather NOR am I expressing any sort of regrets for my actions. Davis merely stated "they" are sorry family members feel bad. What he DID say was he can't do anything to make them feel better … like saying he was wrong; because he WON'T say that. He and other spokespeople like that odious Unger just offer increasingly lame excuses and the complete conviction that their actions were completely correct. It would have been a terrible waste of precious time to devote another minute or two (think one or two seconds a person) in their 3+ hour show to include the 60 or so people they struck from the list they had of notable Academy members who died this past year.

  72. 72

Can they get fucking serious?? Michael Jackson has been honoured a million times this year and he still got a mention.

  73. 73

MJ was not even mentioned in the Grammy in memoriam and nobody gave a fuck.
