Nothing unusual within a European marriage. It has been going on for centuries.

I can't tell if the problem is the language barrier or if she's just really weird

They're probably having sexy times with other people, but who cares?! They're both adults and they knew what they were getting into when they got married. Quite honestly, having lived in Paris for a while, I find it hard to believe that the French are shocked (or even care) about this type of behavior. If anything, they'd be hypocrites for judging. I had the opportunity to enter into many an affair with married men and many whose wives were aware of their intentions. French women tend turn the other way as long as the husband maintains their status of living and is discreet.

I am not French, so I can't say I understand their views on marriage and sex, and I certainly mean no disrespect on French cultural views. She seems bright, but she seems like one of those kind of women who hangs on the arm of whichever man she's with and isn't too discriminating as long as he has money. Let's be honest, she got in good with Sarkozy and married him for money and prestige, not love. Sure doesn't sound like "love" was ever part of their relationship. At this point, she feels like she doesn't have to worry, if they divorce, she's set for life. Mission accomplished, eh Carla?

Re: NervousNell – Carla Bruni was born into wealth & then set about creating her own. She has been set for life from the minute she was born. Her childhood home was a castle for fucks sake + a first marriage at 40 years old does not a golddigger make…

Re: taylor_love – She is Italian

Re: blacklily.of.the.valley – The Italian aristocracy isn't any different.

    Re: blacklily.of.the.valley – She's French-Italian, actually, if we're going to get technical.

    who gives a shit?

Not all European marriages are like that. Its a case by case basis. People over there are more open to making certain rules and boundaries before or during their marriages. Not all couples have open marriages nor are they all cheating on eachother.

lol! yeah right, american marriages are so great?

Since Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (who spoke English, French and Spanish) no american First Lady has been able to give an interview in a foreign language. Carla Bruni, the wife of the French President, probably speaks 3 or more languages. Why don't the americans learn a second or third language - it would broaden their view of the world and open their mind, making them less judgemental of other cultures. It would teach them to stop condemning people such as Tiger Woods, President Clinton, John Edwards and others. But I'm not hopeful this will happen.

Cecilia and Nicolas Sarkozy both had affairs while married, and she wound up divorcing him and marrying her lover. (Yeah, she tried to be discreet, but the two were photographed together in NYC.) Indeed, Cecilia and Nicolas met and fell in love while married to other people.

I would not be surprised if the current Mrs. Sarkozy and her husband both slipped back into their old habits. After all, she included both a father and his married son among her conquests (and broke up his marriage because of it). Carla is a beautiful woman, but she IS la belle dame sans merci.

Re: blacklily.of.the.valley – While she was born in Italy, her family moved to France when she was quite young. She grew up and went to school in France and considers it her home. She is an Italian-born French citizen.

Boy she's not so beautiful in closeup video. Funny how she flips her hair around trying to be all coy, avoiding the question. Real professional.

I'm french and it's not because we're not shocked about open marriage or whatever that every marriage is like that.
French people aren't shocked about things like that because it's not our business so we don't care about what people do in their marriage. But trust me, married people in France doesn't react the same way when it's their wife or husband who have affairs. So it's really a cliché to say that french people aren't shocked because it's a normal thing to do in France, it's really not true.

Re: NervousNell – Besides saving a lot of money when she was a model Carla's family (italian) is very wealthy…I am not saying that she is truly in love with him but she's not running after money…power maybe.

  21. 21

Re: Kriis – That's funny how american people think/say/try to convince themselves they have more values/standards than european people.
Adultery is international..Kennedy cheated on his wife, Bill cheated on his wife, Tigger cheated on his wife, it's a never ending list…
As I already said, I can't picture Carla and Benjamin Biolay having an affair, it doesn't make any sense, but I really really don't care..

  22. 22

Re: Chickie319 – What has been going on for centuries in Europe? Cheating on your husband/wife or not paying attention to your husband/wife cheating on you? Let me tell you that no average french woman 9i.e. not a president wife) would accept a cheating husband same for the husband.
Where do you all get the idea that europeans would cheat more than americans?? Please give me precise data and reasons

I love Carla. She is realistic that love, marriage does not always last. Who knows where life will lead. She hopes it will be the there are so many people who say "we will last forever" and they spend all their time saying that and then surprise, divorce! She is refreshing and a free spirit.

  24. 24

    She's FABULOUS!!
    Love this woman!!

  25. 25

she's a goldigger and found that Napoleonic, stupid but powerful man so… who cares?

  26. 26

Lol why american people refer to Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy to judge about french marriage…
Should we believe that you all did a sextape and changed your bf/gf every week?
Come on, wake up! Stop spending your life on perezhilton.com it's not the real life but only the celebrity life!
I love american people but I can't stand what you say about our culture.
