Mississippi School District SUED For Discriminating Against Lesbian Student!!
Good!! People NEED to know that this is NOT OKAY.
After the Itawamba school district in Mississippi decided to cancel their high school's prom rather than let a lesbian student attend the dance with her girlfriend, they were slapped with a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union!!
The ACLU claims that the student, Constance McMillen, has had her First Amendment right to freely express herself taken away, and is asking that the U.S. District Court have the school's prom reinstated.
McMillen says:
"All I wanted was the same chance to enjoy my prom night like any other student. But my school would rather hurt all the students than treat everyone fairly. This isn't just about me and my rights anymore — now I'm fighting for the right of all the students at my school to have our prom."
Once again, we can't believe how much grace and strength this young woman speaks with.

Anyways when I read the story today I was disgusted. I live maybe 10 mins down the highway from the Ittawamba community. I don't understand why the whole prom was called off. But the schools around here are crazy. Go to school with one hole in your pants anywhere, you will be sent back home & counted absent.

Hey perez - I just sent the district some money to help offset the costs that the tart says "the district has spent too much money on it to cancel"
Also - the district can't be forced to have it. And even if the court tells them they have to, I'd set up the prom in a meeting room at the motel 6…and I think all the students who are against the gays going to prom together, should just not show up and have their own alternative prom.
I think I'll find some parents willing to have a "no gays" prom and send them some money to make it happen.
So, your girls can have their prom, by themsleves, and the rest of the kids can have fun with everyone else.

Here is what I don't get… Constance has interracted with her peers for 4 years in that high school. Her and her classmates have been in classes together, probably walked past each other in the hallways, shared the same recess area and used the same bathroom facilities. What is the difference between her attending classes and her attending the dance with her classmates? What is she going to lay her girlfriend on the appetizer table and eat her out? It is just such an overreaction from the school, for what would probably have been an uneventful night had the girls attended.
This really is too bad. We (hubs and I) had a friend in high school who wanted to bring a girl too prom and she was banned from going. Like some others when we bought our tickets we had to say who we were going with…. On the one hand I do think it is really really sad that they wouldn't allow her to go with who she wanted and really effed up that they canceled the whole thing, on the other School do have rules and regulations, albeit outdated rules, and she knew that. If they change the rules for one student more and more are going to come out of the woods looking for other rules to be changed. Its kind of just a lose lose situation.
Constance and all of her classmates need a prom. Someone needs to sponsor it. Where is MTV? They could film it. Get an awesome DJ, some security instead of chaperones. Perez should chaperone. How fun would that be? It sounds like it is not the students who are the problem so why should they ALL be denied a prom. Constance should be Prom Queen. And HELLO? Last semester, senior year, everything is a distraction, so that claim was bogus.
I hope that suit gets her alotta money….at least enough to pay for university!

It's more than fair that they are being held responsible for acting in an illegal, homophic way.
They missed a perfect opportunity to teach their students tolerance and acceptance of diversity . As educators, shame on them for living in the 18th century.

The school administration was bullying McMillen by cancelling the prom — they were obviously trying to turn the whole student body against her. They may have put her in danger and should be ashamed.
Congrats to the parents — they obviously did an excellent job raising their daughter.

They can, and have been, canceled at other schools for various reasons. 2) As a school SPONSORED event, the school has a legal commitment to regulate the function. And, they can do this as they see fit, by setting certain hours for the dance, setting certain standards for attire (MEN in tuxes / WOMEN in evening style attire), not allowing drinking, deciding on the music to be played, etc. All this dyke had to do was show up, and hang with her girlfriend. But, as with most cases involving HOMO's, she HAD to make a point. The school is well within it's rights to do what it did. The ACLU is not going to win this, unless the school board caves in. As to her statement, SHE got the prom canceled. I hope all the kids who just lost their Sr. prom because of this dyke remembers that.

AprilB- There you go again comparing two very different things. Anyone can CHOOSE to go to the prom naked. People can't CHOOSE their sexual preference. They are born with it.
I grew up in MS and spent most of my adult life there, and I want everyone to know that not everyone in that state uses bad grammar, is missing teeth, and are backwards, uneducated gay-haters! In fact, most Mississippians are wonderful people. It's the 'precious few' that give the rest of us a bad name. Anyway, some of my old high school pals and I were discussing this topic (since we graduated from a school about 30 miles from Fulton) this morning and we all remembered that we went to the prom in groups…..some in pairs…..girls with other girls…guys with guys, and it was no bigee. Hmmmmmm what's the big deal about this now? I feel sorry for the kids in Fulton not having a prom…..I really do. It's time for all schools to step up and realize all kids are just like adults and already know their sexual preferences and should be allowed to live their lives openly and without discrimination. As a parent, I'd be worried about drugs and weapons being brought to a prom, NOT a girl bringing a female date with her!

I'm absolutely appalled that a school district would so callously disregard the constitutional rights of a student and alienate her from her school and community. Good for you, Perez, for bringing light to this issue.
