Pink Floyd Wins In Court

As we previously mentioned, Pink Floyd was suing EMI Group over music royalties - and they won!

The record label will no longer be selling single downloads from their concept albums. It has not been determined how much the band will be owed, but the costs are estimated at £60,000.

Despite the fact that Pink Floyd's contract stated that their music could not be "unbundled" from its original context, EMI had been selling the music as singles AND using it as ringtones.

Ouch!

Wonder how long its gonna be till EMI completely goes under?!

Rest in peace Syd and Rick, Yeah rip them a new one Dave and Nick, and you too Roger!

Agree with Hairless Cat. Syd was my favorite of Pink Floyd, and both he and Rick are gone too soon. But now's a good time for Roger's attitude. I hope he puts the screws in EMI for this.

      Agreed!
:] Wow Perez you posted something about my favourite band :o

I like Pink Floyd and I am all for artistic integrity. That said, I think that the law suit was somewhat hypocritical and disingenuous considering the fact that the group has no problem with radio stations playing individual songs 'out of context' as well as performing individual songs in concert without presenting the entire album live and in sequence. Seems to be more about money (selling full albums as opposed to single tracks) than anything else.

Wow my favorite band on Perez? So what if it was about the money? It's THEIR money!

It's the principle of the thing. They don't want their concept albums chopped up into single song sales for profits. The entire Floyd vs. EMI case isn't done being decided, either, so I read that EMI still continues to sell Floyd songs until the judge orders a cease and desist, which hasn't happened yet.

Re: stellagranos – Great point. I wondered if radio airplay is ok as it's supposed to motivate the listener to pick up the album the song is on, and the listener's ability to hear it is only random and at the mercy of the radio station's unpredictable playlist. I'd grant them some musical integrity - imagine a Symphony conductor cherry picking favorite bits from a long work. They do, but only for a favorites night to pull in money from the masses; thus I think it could be the opposite, with the mp3's designed to do what the favorites night does.

EMI have eaten themselves to the bone. There has never been such an egoistical record label. So many big heads frequent at the EMI headquarters.

And didn't OK GO stick two fingers up to EMI this week too?

      Great stuff!
