Update! Lesbian Teen Stands Her Ground Despite School Board Revoking Prom!!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayInspiration

What a brave girl!!

We reported earlier that a Mississippi county school board cancelled prom for an entire high school after a lesbian student attempted to fight a rule that banned her from bringing her girlfriend to the dance.

The student, Constance McMillen, returned to school today for the first time since the announcement, and despite backlash from her peers, is holding her ground!!

McMillen says:

"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am. The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on. Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.' I guess they would rather do that than what's right, what's constitutionally correct. It's a small town in Mississippi, and it's run by an older generation with money. Most of them are more conservative and they don't agree with it."

Poor thing!!

She seems like such a smart, well-adjusted young woman with a good head on her shoulders!!

Daryl Presgraves, spokesman for the advocacy group Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education network, says:

"A lot of schools actually react rather than do the research and find out what the rights of these students are. It sends a message that these students shouldn't be treated the same."

So unfair and sad.

We said it before, but hang in there, Constance!!

We know how hard this must be for you, but by holding your head up high and not backing down, you are no doubt inspiring TONS of gay kids everywhere to believe in who they are!!

We think you're a real hero!!

What a hero! If there were a vote for gay rights amongst YOUNG PEOPLE it would pass by a landslide eventually the old bigots will die off.

  2. 2

THIS IS THE PRINCIPAL'S EMAIL ADDRESS:

    mnanney@itawamba.k12.ms.us

LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!

  3. 3

But..if she was famous and not ready to come out, you'd be the first one to call her some nasty L-words, wouldn't you?

  4. 4

Stand proud, Constance!!! You are wise beyond your years so please hang in there — there is so much more out there than high school. You should be SO PROUD of yourself!!!! You deserve to be able to take whoever you want to prom just like everyone else - this is discrimination & that's all it is. YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION!!!! And I'm so glad your Dad supports you - what a GREAT father to a WONDERFUL YOUNG LADY!!!

  5. 5

I hope their fire insurance is all paid up…

  6. 6

Good for her! Same thing happened here in Canada a few years ago, Marc Hall wanted to bring his boyfriend to prom and the school wouldn't let him. He sued the schoolboard and won! He got to bring his bf to prom. They even made a movie about it: "Prom Queen, the Marc Hall Story". Hang in there girl!

  7. 7

    YOU GO BABY GIRL!!!!!!!

  8. 8

    what an amazing young lady.

  9. 9

Good for YOU!!!!!!!! So many kids are terrorized because of their sexuality that they end up doing something awful. You my dear, have done something positive and something that Mississippi needs to learn to deal with. Don't hold back and don't give up! You have alot of people behind you!

  10. 10

She is amazing and sounds like she has fantastic supportive parents…. as they should be! Well done Contance, sounds like those peers need at least another year in school, they have a lot to learn.

  11. 11

Gee, I bet she's popular around her school. LOL

  12. 12

Are you Fuckin kidding? wow. she looks 16, lol. I admit the school went tooo far, but damn she couldve lied, been like this my cousin, LOL.

besides it's Lesbians!! Thats HOT! gay guys then fuck that shit close the school, LOL

I dont hate gays, they are ppl to, But sorry they cant win in a str8 mans world

  13. 13

Extremely brave beyond her years. Good luck to her. We should all take a note from her book and stand up for ourselves no matter what because who will look out for you if you won’t, And maybe you will give strength to someone who thinks they can’t.

  14. 14

Way to ruin it for everyone! Nobody gets a prom because of your selfishness. I bet she's popular with the kids that have been looking forward to that prom for 18 years.

  15. 15

she's so cute!! fight for your rights BB!

  16. 16

    Email sent :P

  17. 17

Definitely a hero. You have a ton of people backing you up, girl. So don't give up. :)

  18. 18

Perez should throw her a prom!

  19. 19

That's a well spoken young girl.

  20. 20

The school system should take a second to realize that they are violating McMillen's rights and are being discriminative towards a minor.
This message that the school system is showing to the rest of the nation is a terrible, and which can only cause more isolation for McMillen, because some of her classmates are mad at her for "ruining their prom" and perhaps perform gay-bashing acts towards her, which not only hurts McMillen, but it can hurt other people as well, such as other students in the school district who have not "came out of the closet" yet.

I admire that her dad is being supportive of her and is encouraging her to keep her head held up high. Acceptance and adult responsibility like this is what saves a person's life and sanity.

  21. 21

    yay uppity

  22. 22

Re: highboo – Speak the truth and shame the devil!

  23. 6one9 says – reply to this

    23

My daughters H.S. has NO probs with being gay or lesbian. So Calif here.

  24. 24

She'll probably end up married to a boy in about 5 years!!!

  25. 25

That takes GUTS. Good for her!

  26. 26

she's amazing. and her classmates are stupid.
they should be standing up for constance's rights, and not bashing her because they "ruined" their senior year.
you'll get another prom in college!

  27. 27

Wow, she is indeed very brave. It's disgusting how the school board has set her up to be picked on by her schoolmates.

  28. 28

    This is lame news

  29. 29

Also, you can write the principal to show your support!

  30. 30

DO YOUR PART AND BURN DOWN A CATHOLIC CHURCH TODAY

  31. 31

To the person who told her "Thanks for ruining my senior year"..
thanks for ruining the future with your stupid selfish ignorance its people like that who pass the hate to their kids!.

  32. 32

Wow, it's nice to see a role model coming from a normal teenager. She's so blessed to have a supporting family, that teaches her bravery from a very young age. I hope she wins!

  33. 33

    Re: highboo

death threat to principal sent. thanks for the email

  34. 34

it shouldn't matter who you go to prom with whether it be male or female. I went to an all girls public high school(which they are attempting to close as of 2011) Eventhough it was an all girls school owned by nuns none the less they still let us as people take whom ever we wanted. I am in no way or form against gay or lesbian relationships, it's how people grow you can't go against what makes people happy.

  35. 35

Hero? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! This little girl's selfish choice is taking away everyone else's long-awaited and deserved event. That's not "heroic" you idiot! It's unbelievably SELFISH!

"Heroism" would be standing up against the school board or what have you if she were asked to leave the school because of her sexual preference. THIS IS AN INSULT TO REAL HERO'S.

But once again, the wants of the few impede on the right's of the all. You want to bring your girlfriend to the dance and the school say's "No." F the school and do something else! Like those two idiot twin brothers that wanted to join the Boy Scouts of America (Christian based organization) then through a fit because their Atheist views conflicted with those of the Scouts.

The grotesque selfishness in this world is appalling.

I'm sure it'll be REAL funny when this girl bring's her husband to her 10 year reunion and apologizes for ruining something for everybody that she can never get back.

  36. 36

I've really tried all day to refrain from commenting on this subject because I am so emotional about it. But I can't hold back any longer. TOO MANY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE HAVE DIED TO PRESERVE THE RIGHT TO DIGNITY AND RESPECT FOR ALL!
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ layed down his life for us" - I John 3:16
R.I.P. MLK, Matthew Shepherd and all the other heroes.

  37. 37

Re: Dan1863 – That is what I am saying! Way to be selfish and destroy what should be a very special night for everyone!

  38. 38

this is what people say your gay nobody should have prom or lesbians things ugly bitch

  39. 39

    tomate frito

  40. 40

Dan1863, she had NOTHING to do with the prom's cancellation. Blame that on the cave men who run that school. This is 2010, not 1950. That school violated her basic human rights.

  41. 41

Oh my god, what kind of backward school is this? This is blatant discrimination; if she lived in Britain she could sue and win. Not that any school here would ban a homosexual from bringing a date to a prom, but then some parts of America do seem stuck in the 17th century. Like the magician who got arrested for practicing witchcraft a few years ago.

So glad I live in Britain.

  42. 42

Perez throw this girl and students around the country in her situation a prom! you would make it more amaze-balls than the ones a silly school could throw. They deserve it!

  43. 43

its best the school cancelled the prom its quite clear all she wanted to do is make a fool of herself –and you know how these people are monkey see monkey do–lets all act like worthless people no matter who it hurts-im sure there were no crippled or changled people or that wanted to go to the prom, but what do you care your a freak who likes to do it with misfits.

  44. 44

Don't be gay, then you won't be in this dilemma!!!

  45. 45

"She seems like such a smart, well-adjusted young woman with a good head on her shoulders!!"
Uhh no, beingg gay is a mental illness.

  46. 46

    Re: Indrid Cold

    shut the fuck up dipshit

*kicks soapbox out from under indrid colds fat ass*

  47. 47

everybody–everybody listen to me im a hero i have no morals im gay i shove all kinds of things up my ass and asses of others,im a hero im out of the closet,i need to tell everybody that im nomal-and mom and dad i wont be having children or getting married but i promise to make you guys a laughing stock in our town,im a hero

  48. 48

Oh Perez-you used the word fa**ot in hate and didn't apologize for it so you only contribute to close minded people like those school officials.

  49. 49

Re: Indrid Cold – Your suggestion of acceptance of marginalization makes me want to reach through my laptop screen and smack you, but violence is not the answer…thank heaven for virtual kung-fu!

  50. 50

Too bad. This is why many districts have separate Gay and Lesbian Proms so things like this don't happen. While I don't agree with the school's decision to shut down prom, the girl shouldn't be so selfish and demand the school cater to HER. Sounds like her house is going to get burned down or she will end up face down in a ditch somewhere.

  51. 51

    Yay! what a Hero

  52. 52

    i'd hit it, hard

  53. 53

Perez you should start a fund for her prom!! I will totally donate like five buck (I know it is not much, but if everybody does it it would add up!)

  54. 54

Re: BILL-PAYER – it's about equality. no matter if the person is gay or in a wheelchair, they should be equally allowed to be welcomed into the prom to celebrate their future. No one sees even now and it's sad. Closed minds. Open it up a little and things will be clearer.

  55. 55

HEY ALL YOU FUCKING MORONS SAYING THAT ITS THIS GIRLS FAULT THAT THE PROM WAS CANCELLED. ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED????????? THIS IS THE SCHOOL BOARDS POOR DECISION AND THEY ARE AT FAULT, NOT THIS GIRL. THEY CAN RECTIFY THE SITUATION IF THEY CHOSE BUT THEY HAVE FAILED BY DECIDING TO CANCEL THE EVENT ALL TOGETHER, THUS THEY ARE AT FAULT. GROW THE FUCK UP YOU GODDAMNED MORONS, IF I WAS THIS GIRL I WOULD PUT MY NOSE UP IN THE AIR AT ALL OF YOU ASSCLOWNS AND PROCLAIM 'TOUGH SHIT, CONSULT THE SCHOOL BOARD. AINT MY PROBLEM'

  56. 56

Brave young lady, and a fabulous role model for all of the gay, lesbian and transgendered students to follow. Hold your head up high, honey! You are a HERO!!!

  57. 57

i feel so sorry for her

  58. 58

Good for her! She shouldnt let the school or anyone in her community make her feel bad for who she is. She has the right to take her girlfriend to the prom if she wants.

  59. 59

    Re: residentevil808

MAKE SENSE NEXT TIME YOU FUCKING SHITHEEL. FEED YOUR HEAD INTO A WOODCHIPPER NOW!

  60. 60

I'm so proud of this girl, and her parents for encouraging her to stand up for herself and be proud of who she is. The people responsible for the decision to cancel prom are a bunch of bigots, and their actions are only going to promote anger and resentment toward this young woman, particularly from her peers. They should be ashamed of themselves for creating such a hostile, intolerant environment and for teaching young people to be ashamed of their sexual orientation - and of themselves! Stay strong, Constance!! You're an inspiration!! :)

  61. 61

Hopefully years from now we will look back and be so ashamed that gay people did not have the same rights as us, just as we are embarrassed about everything leading up to the civil rights movement. I cant believe some people are still against gay rights. Why does this girl not deserve to go to her prom like the other kids at her school? How is her bringing a girl going to affect anyones life? People need to realize that our lives are not going to change just because gays have rights! Isnt equality supposed to be what america is all about?

  62. 62

She is HOT! :) …Wish I was her date! :( *Giggles*

  63. 63

Prom is kinda lame anyway… ;)

And wots some people, like being condescending & homophobic on the comments boards….uh, yer reading PerezHilton….confused much?!?

  64. 64

hero is a bit strong. but good for her

  65. 65

Re: BILL-PAYER – We're talking about a child here. You should be ashamed of your disgusting self. I'm happily married but I can think of a few things I'd like to shove up your ass.

  66. 66

oh Porkez, you're so proud to be gay, right?
    "you're not a f**king artist … you're a f**king f*ggot."

    LOL, you're a joke.

  67. 67

hold a fund for her prom!!!!!!!!!!!!
You go Constance! Hold your head high, we are proud of you!

  68. 68

    hero!! wtf!
im glad they cancelled the prom.. sad for the ones that do deserve it and wont b able to enjoy their big event. if shes a hero then so is tiger woods.. u guys sux @ callin ppl lik her a hero, shes a confused soul in major need of god! read the bible bitch!!!!!

  69. 69

That pisses me off so much. Why shouldn't she be allowed to bring her girlfriend? Love has no race, no gender, no religion. Everybody should be treated the same. Stories like this make me cry. The one that hurt me the most is Matthew Shepard's story.

  70. 70

Re: Indrid Cold – Are *you* kidding *me*?? This “little girl” is being persecuted for her sexual orientation, and you’re demonizing her for her decision to stand up for her rights? Have you even considered how special this event must be to Constance? It’s no less morally irreprehensible to deny this girl the opportunity to attend her prom on account of her gender or the colour of her skin. What these bigots responsible for cancelling prom are doing is wrong and Constance’s decision to stand up for herself *is* heroic, because she is inspiring others to stand up for themselves and to stand against bigotry. What’s *truly* selfish here is the desire of other students to go ahead with prom at the cost of another student’s rights. The school board is seeking to exclude a student from an event because of her very nature – that’s discrimination, sweetheart, and Constance is damn right to fight it.

  71. 71

she's inspiring to straight americans too! what a kick-ass kid!

  72. 72

The word hero is reserved for soldiers, firemen, police and rescue personnel. A high school lesbian who happens to conform to your agenda is not a hero asswipe. She's an ordinary citizen, nothing else.

  73. 73

Re: Dan1863 – I'm sorry, but if Prom is the only thing they've been looking forward to for 18 years (really, that's the only thing they've been looking forward to their whole life?) they're pathetic and will go nowhere in life.

  74. 74

I just read the complaint which was filed yesterday in Disctrict Court. She's got a strong lawsuit, the ACLU and amazing lawyers behind her. I know she will prevail. That school board is in for one heck of a blood bath.

  75. 75

Re: luvrobpatz – We are ALL sinners. Jesus Christ died for ALL of our sins…not that I feel being gay is a sin. REAL Christians love and respect all people, regardless of faith, gender, sexual orientation, profession, etc. Please don't use our Lord's name to promote hate and exclusion - that's not what Christ's teachings are about. No wonder people hate Christians, I've got people like you clumped in with people like me - ugh!

  76. 76

Re: diamondscarter – Uhhh no, but being a bigoted asshole is.

  77. 77

Wow… who would have thought that two girls dancing would be considered worse than the whole student body missing their prom.

Also, cancelling the prom is a way of bullying McMillan. The administration obviously was trying to turn the student body against her (this could have put her in serious danger) Who ever is responsible for this decision should be ashamed.

And congrats to the parents. You are obviously doing a great job raising your child — you should be proud.

  78. 78

HEY HEY HEY!! all the homophobes up in this bitch are just internally jelous, think about it dont argue with them they are on PEREZHILTON, he is a fucking queen. no offense perez(maybe you would take it as a compliment) do you really think they are straight homophobic people? um no their gay, not saying all straights here are homos,( the accepting but not believing its ok are straight, the cool straights are straight) the homophobic straights…ARE HOMOS! you big screaming queens, if u would really be all up in the bible u bitches wouldnt be here

  79. 79

Re: Worst Gossip Site Ever – MLK was not a hero? Ghandi was not a hero? Jesus Christ was not a hero? Fidel Castro was a soldier…is he a hero? Mark Fuhrman was a cop…is he a hero? Mark J. Weber was a firefighter convicted of murdering a black man in a hate crime with a fellow firefighter…are they heroes? Tarino Lightbourn was a paramedic who tried to blackmail John Travolta after his son died…is he a hero? My point: heroes come in all forms…just like evil-doers.

  80. 80

M REALLY SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE SAYING MISSISSIPPIANS ARE DUMB AND WE PREACH ABSTINCE ONLY AND HAVE A HORRIBLE EDUCATION SYSTEM. THAT IS SO NOT TRUE. 2 YEARS AGO I GRADUATED FROM THE #1 SCHOOL IN MISSISSIPPI AND I RECEIVE A GREAT EDUCATION AND I TOOK SEX CLASS, WHICH DIDN'T PREACH ABSTINENCE. ALSO AT MY HIGH SCHOOL I KNEW OF SEVERAL TRANSGENDERS, AND THEY DRESSED LIKE THE OPPOSITE SEX EVERYDAY AND NO ONE SAID ANYTHING. THEY WERE TREATED LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE. THEY HAD FRIENDS AND TEACHERS TALKED TO THEM TOO. FOR THE RECORD AT MY SCHOOL I KNEW A FEW PEOPLE THAT CAME TO PROM DRESSED IN TUXES AND OUR PRINCIPAL HAD NO PROBLEM WITH IT. WE AREN'T ALL NARROW MINDED.

  81. 81

someone with $$$$$$$$ needs to throw these kids a real prom! a dance where EVERYONE gets along and dances and can say "screw our school" if you stand up for what is right(sounds like this girl has been shown nothing but acceptance from her family-THANK GOD) you will persivere(sic). in my daughter's lifetime(she is 2 now) there will be a better world to grow up in thanks to teens like this girl. Must have been hard to do in Mississippi. mad props!!

  82. 82

One of my best friends is from Fulton, and it's not just that the girl is a lesbian. No one is allowed or has been allowed to bring a date of the same sex, regardless of their orientation. I mean, I'm not trying to defend the school or anything, but I think that that fact is really important and being overlooked.

  83. 83

God forbid the majority of people stand of for THEIR RIGHTS and take a stand against something that they find offensive. . . love it when the minority dictates morality for the majority. . . I applaud the school district for giving the proverbial bird to the ACLU (the human equivalent to the whackadoodles at PETA).

It isn't fair to the other kids in her school that one person is ruining it for everyone, but you gotta love it when a group of people stand of for their rights.

  84. 84

It's obvious that the school is pitting this girl against her classmates. No one is stopping the kids from having a prom. All they have to do is rent a place and sell tickets to pay for it. That's what kids at my school did because the school didn't have dances or proms.

  85. 85

Re: kimmyd1221 – hear that Perez????? I think that would be freakin amazing!!!! Anybody else agree??

  86. 86

Re: browchickenbrowncow – Their right to what? Discriminate? See, they don't actually have the right to that. If the community finds our American laws offensive, then they should move the whole town to Saudi Arabia, where gay people are rounded up and imprisoned and beaten.

  87. 87

She is brave and strong. A truly heroic person who not only stands up for her own rights, but the rights of her people. Bravo!

  88. 88

Support the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition. They are doing great work in Mississippi to promote eqaulity for all students. They rock.. "mssafeschools dot org"

  89. 89

awful principal…schools are meant to look after their students not put them in such awkward positions. all the students should protest and fight for their prom and the right to bring anyone they want to it

  90. 90

ok….maybe everybody wasn't paying attention, but the young lady's girlfriend is also a student at the school, at least that's what I read. That being said, I agree that they should just have an alternate prom…yo Perez, can we get a fund started for these kids? Time is tight, but I'm sure something can be done…with the right help for them, that is.

  91. 91

Re: highboo – he is not the principal any more. he was the principal when i was a sophomore and i am now a senior, trey wiygul is not the principal…i am 18 year old senior at the school!

  92. 92

Re: highboo – If you're going to literally pick apart the term hero and choose someone evil from from each category, then you better add lesbian murderess Aileen Wuornos. This high school lesbian is not in the same category as people who deserve the title hero. Using the media and the courts to take on a school board because you feel you've been discriminated against doesn't make you a hero.

  93. 93

    Aww good for her!!
I would do the same thing if i were a lesbian.
It's a free country, and the kids should be mad at the principal, not her.

  94. 94

Re: gregorydavid – Email address adjusted: twiygul@itawamba.k12.ms.us

    Thanks!

  95. 95

Damn, Too bad. Shes way too cute to be a dyke.

  96. 96

Re: Indrid Cold – I'M sorry you couldn't be more wrong or disgusting. The girl took a courageous stand especially in such a disgusting state with a history of bigotry. Only a callous damaged evil person would view the girl as anything but the victim in this disgusting example of republican bigotry at play. The girl wanted to enjoy the same rights non-gay people enjoy and gay tax payers pay for schooling too. The school decided it was going to play hard ball and punish all kids they are to blame not only for the bigotry but for the punitive tactic they took. I'm sorry but did I mention that you are disgusting and immoral?

  97. 97

Re: Denver5280 – Supporting bigotry nice morals. Puting your disgusting kid on the pic too.

  98. 98

Re: ChicoHijo – Ok cholo for now just don't join a gang like most in your family stop having 20 kids on welfare and leave gay people the fuck alone. Graffitti is not art work.

  99. 99

Re: mi mama me mima – Get a green card ,you lowlife cnt.

  100. 100

Re: BILL-PAYER – Bill payer does that make you special you ignorant trailer park white trash hick? We all pay bills you are not special. You really make me sick you hillbilly and your disgusting wife.
