Update! Lesbian Teen Stands Her Ground Despite School Board Revoking Prom!!
What a brave girl!!
We reported earlier that a Mississippi county school board cancelled prom for an entire high school after a lesbian student attempted to fight a rule that banned her from bringing her girlfriend to the dance.
The student, Constance McMillen, returned to school today for the first time since the announcement, and despite backlash from her peers, is holding her ground!!
McMillen says:
"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am. The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on. Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.' I guess they would rather do that than what's right, what's constitutionally correct. It's a small town in Mississippi, and it's run by an older generation with money. Most of them are more conservative and they don't agree with it."
Poor thing!!
She seems like such a smart, well-adjusted young woman with a good head on her shoulders!!
Daryl Presgraves, spokesman for the advocacy group Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education network, says:
"A lot of schools actually react rather than do the research and find out what the rights of these students are. It sends a message that these students shouldn't be treated the same."
So unfair and sad.
We said it before, but hang in there, Constance!!
We know how hard this must be for you, but by holding your head up high and not backing down, you are no doubt inspiring TONS of gay kids everywhere to believe in who they are!!
We think you're a real hero!!

i am a catholic, but i fully believe in gay rights. i believe in HUMAN rights. yet it annoys me that perez (though i love him) bashes the catholic church, along with some commenters. you guys need to realize that catholics are good people who help so many less fortunate people. not everyone is going to agree on topics such as homosexuality.

What is wrong with that school board? They need to direct their ire at the board's decision, and not this poor but brave young girl. The board is hiding their true colors behind a young girl. "Let's redirect our anger. I know, let's cancel the whole prom, and everyone will hate on the girl. It's a kind of blackmail if you ask me.

I agree that this is total discrimination … but let's get some facts straight. She's in a rural town in the middle of the bible belt and she demanded to wear a tuxedo to the prom.
The school did allow them to come , but under stupid conditions 1.) no tux 2.) enter separately 3.) if anyone is offended they could be asked to leave
That's where the ACLU stepped in and really started butting heads. If your from the south the ACLU is not exactly a welcomed force.
So it's not just one side that we're focused on but quite a number of them. Everyone wants time on this - what a mess!
That little girl is a true hero… I wish her classmates were on her side.
They cancelled prom for ONE person… Shows how idiotic these people are. That class most likely has been raising money for the prom since their freshman year. And now what? That money will most likely go back to the school. This is not fair. Those students have worked hard to raise that money. Cancelling prom just because one person wanted to bring their girlfriend is not a reason to cancel something that everybody has worked so hard for.

I read everything that went on with these girls on the CNN site. These girls didn't ruin the prom for everyone. The racist, bigoted schoolboard ruined it for everyone. But what can you expect from a state like Mississippi. Mississippi is behind the times by 300 years.

THis girl wants to bring a female with her and the school decides to cancel prom in order to prevent her from bringing a female with her… how is that her fault that the school has ignorant morons running the school… its not like she was given the option to have prom cancelled for everybody or not bring along her "friend" … the school made the decision! the students blaming her for their "ruin senior year" are the selfish assholes, thinking about a stupid dance over the rights of a fellow classmate.. if any of them were being prevented from doing something they would stand up for what is right.. those who disagree and think she is being selfish need a lot of growing up to do, because in the real world we stand up for what is right, and dont let other people with ignorant views step all over us…. we can be open to differences but this is a clear violation of her rights!

A hero can be any body that does a brave act or has great courage… look up the word since you seem to believe only a catergory of people can be called a "hero"… what this young girl is doing takes great courage especially at her age, against a school, and being singled out because of her orientation at her school by classmates now.

Is this the kind of 'Education' this school board had in mind? They did the exact same kind of thing in Mississippi during segregation. It looks like an old rerun. This kind of thing will help snowball the talked about Hate Laws into legislation.
