Did The Gorillaz's Snatch Their New Single???

According to Eddy Grant they did!

The UK singer is consulting lawyers this week to consider suing the Gorillaz for substantial damages over allegedly plagiarizing a song. Grant insists that the band's new single Stylo has the same keyboard riff from his 1983 track Time Warp. He even suggests that the group's leader, Damon Albarn, is completely aware of the steal. He explains:

"Damon Albarn knows in his heart of hearts - it's unfortunate that we cant get into people's hearts - he knows that this is a song that he's loved, in his club days… I don't know the guy… but he knows this is a song he loves."

It wouldn't be too far of a stretch, considering that both artists are signed on with the same publishing company, EMI, but we think this guy is just trying to jump onto their success.

    Are you on crack?

  3. 3

The only snatch you know is is Teddy's balloon knot dog humper! harry sez " See you in Hell douchebag!' Later cum guzzler!

  4. 4

    I can definitely hear it!

  5. 5

I hear the similarities for sure. Hell, classical musicians used to even do that back in the day- take something someone else wrote and tweak it, calling it a variation and sometimes that would become more popular than the original. I wonder if they paid the original composer for the lift back then?

I don't think the Gorillaz stole anything. Maybe Eddy is trying to distance himself from being the 'Electric Avenue' guy or something.

Grant must be broke and desperate. I love it when someone sniffing out easy money says that his victim "knows" in his "heart of hearts." The only Eddy Grant song I've ever heard is the god-awful Electric Avenue. Never heard of Time Warp, and I suppose it's distinctly possible that Damon Albarn hasn't either. Get a job, Grant.

Actually, yes, it does sound similar.

Um yeah… I listened to it this morning, but I don't hear it. Stylo was supposed to sound like an 80's dancehall track, so of course some similarities could be there. Not just with this track however!

Eddy Grant it the MAN and that is a clear snatch! I love Gorillaz too but Eddy was first with that cherry.

  11. 11

Sounds a wee bit similar but i love damon so cant say anything bad x x x

  12. 12

Honestly… it's 3 notes. We start awarding one dude for 3 notes we're never going to get new music because people will be terrified of having to pay royalties to every Tom, Dick and Harry who came before.

  14. 14

    damon you naughty naughty boy!!

  15. 15

*LOVE* Gorillaz and the new album, BUT, yes, Stylo is a slower version of that song (first time I heard it. I did like Electric Avenue though).

I often wonder if sometimes a songwriter hears a song once, then years later accidentally recreates that, without realizing where their inspiration comes from.

  16. 16

    I don't here it.

  17. 17

Lol, I swear, some of you people have to hear EVERYTHING EXACTLY the same before you "get it". I guess not everyone has an ear for music. No Sherlock Holmes' on here!

It's the same, just slower. The same "driving" background rhythm at a slower pace, the same keyboard chords…

I respect Damon big time; he's truly talented musically, so I won't be surprised when he apologizes for accidentally recreating a song he liked decades ago without realizing where his influence was coming from.

  18. 18

    i love Gorillaz

  19. 19

    similar but not that much
    besides BOTH songs suck

  20. 20

I hear it…first time I've ever heard it on Perez' posts.

  21. 21

Actually, the beginning sounds like "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats.

    22

Bullshit. It's not even close to being the same song. This sounds like a rather pathetic attempt to knock Gorillaz off the charts. Whose bitch is Eddie who? Lady Gaga's?

  23. Heidi says – reply to this

    23

Absolutely! It's a slowed down version, but you cannot deny it's the same. And I'm a huge fan of the Gorillaz, but I gotta call 'em like I see 'em (or hear 'em in this case).

  24. 24

Similar, not the same and so not worth legal action. Eddy Grant should just chill this has already helped his career. I had never heard of him till now, and I actually like his song.
