Michel Gondry Slams GaGaloo!
We won't deny that Michel Gondry, acclaimed filmmaker and music video director for the likes of The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, and The White Stripes, has vision.
But fool, you must be downright BLIND if you're not AMAZED by Lady Gaga!
During a recent interview with Michel, he said of GaGa:
“I’m not interested. To me it’s like a form of Marilyn Manson. It’s hard for me to talk about it; I’ve seen a couple of videos of hers, and not for very long. I stop watching them each time because I don’t think there’s melodies. I’m sorry to be negative. Like I’m not a big fan of Madonna. I respect her very much, but unfortunately the videos didn’t help the music in the long run. Well, I guess it helped it to survive to the point where the video was irrelevant. So music has to find its own way, which is good for the music. It becomes smaller and more alive and it’s not as crazy, except for some R&B. To me, it’s just talking about the surface. I compare it to Marilyn Manson. The music to me is very expected. I don’t think there’s anything in the tone or the melody that makes me say, ‘Oh, there’s something going on.’… And I like commercial music. Michael Jackson will always be my favorite pop musician; he was for years and years until his death, which was horrible to me. So I like pop culture. But to me, even if it’s popular, there is a quality in the music you have to be able to appreciate. And I don’t see it. Her melodies are very conventional. I remember when my friend and I would argue about Killing Joke. I remember him saying, ‘It’s so great!’ But I said, ‘It’s so conventional! How can you find anything original? It’s just surface!’ I don’t know, maybe the comparison is ridiculous. But the melody was very, very flat. That’s probably why they are famous. But maybe it’s considered high art just because of the way she dresses?”
We read all that and all we got was "Blah, blah, blah, JEALOUS!!!, blah, blah, blah!
Next time you make a video, we'll put it up against GaGa's and see which one fares better.

she does suck. Not alot of talent, but alot of costumes and makeup that make people pay attention to her like retards focusing on a shiny object! Her fucking songs SUCK! Singing about a fucking telephone, clubs, and alcohol only get you the attention span of chewing gum.

He's absolutely right, and I actually enjoy Gaga. Her vids are fun to watch, but there's no substance to the music. Poker Face and Telephone are almost interchangeable musically. She's going to need to get some real music out there before long, or she'll be a flash in the pan. It really is all about the music, after all.

I am a huge fan of Michel Gondry and I also love Lady Gaga. He has his right to his own opinion, don't hate! He does bring up valid points that her music is commercialized at times, but I love her still! And please, if you put one of his videos or films against her, he will always be better he is a genious!
Look, I enjoy Lady Gaga as much as the next person, but to say that her videos and music is above and beyond and some fantastical piece of performance art is stretching it. Michel Gondry makes incredible stories with amazing imagery and to deny that he is extremely talented is ignorant at best. He was creating awesome videos for music before Lady Gaga even erupted adult teeth so surely he has a right to hold his opinion. Can you really go past the super amazing 'Everlong' video for Foo Fighters as proof of his genius? Really? And that's just one of many! To say that he is jealous is just stupid Perez, not everyone is going to like Lady Gaga and they have the right to hold their own opinions, even if it doesn't gell with yours. Ultimately, this article is just trivial and you should be focusing efforts on more worthier causes.

Yup, totally agree, it should be about the music, and GaGa is pretty unoriginal, not saying it aint fun, but it certainly doesn't fit the persona she projects. She's a female Elton John, so what! Obviously much easier to design a "look" than write great melodies and songlines.

As an Artist I am over GAGA…i think she went way to far and way too fast and now its just boring to me. Im ready to see her be something real…that would be worth watching…because she is an incredible musician…so i just dont get why she is overshadowing that with all the crazy shit!!

I want to star saying Im a Lagy GaGa fan. It's nothing against her, but I think that as the human she is, she can make mistakes Perez. From my point of view, of course very personal, she pushes the line a little bit too much some times. It's ok, how we say my country "en gustos se rompren géneros" and I think having an opinion is something we must all respect. I feel sometimes we are blinded for the love or admiration we have for some people, and its ok, in the very end we are all the same; I admire you for having a strong point of view and "cero pelos en la lengua" and being out there saying it to the world, but let me tell you that I also feel that sometimes you are not very objective when it comes to GaGa. Besides desquialifying other people can make us less credible. So let me finish my comment saying that, despite we like GaGa and we think she is great, its no law that whatever she does is right, cool and the best to the eyes of other people.

i thoroughly enjoy lady gaga. although yes what she's doing has been done before, it is what it is. it's pop music. no one asks for substance just a great hook and something you can dance to. although i do find her incredibly talented musically, the thing that draws me to her is that larger than life persona. that mix of attributes that all great pop stars before her have/had: sex, confidence, insecurity all the while untouchable. almost intangible. in the end, people identify with them. they want to have that confidence/sex appeal. they identify with the insecurity. they want to be adored. they want to be the alpha female. madonna did it. janet did it. she's doing it. let her have her moment and do with it what she will folks.

Even though I like Lady Gaga, I totally agree with everything he said. She's terribly overrated.
Completely agree with this. Lady Gaga has no musical talent that has not been heard from other pop stars (madonna, kerli, britney). She masks her music with this avant garde style she has but lacks any musical note. I'm an old sole and love Led Zeppelin and many other talented rock musicians. This music is just a lack of purpose and soul in it that it has no meaning. When she actually forgets about the look and focuses on the music maybe she can actually start producing great tunes. But until then she needs to go away.
Gaga's music is nothing special AT ALL - it is the same pop crap they've been playing on the radio for years. If she didn't make her videos, performances and persona so theatrical and over-the-top, she would be absolutely nothing.
She is undeniably a talented pianist and singer - I just wish she would start utilizing her talent and writing music that means something. Singing about dance floors and DJs is not art.

I agree with Michel, if you just listen to her music there's nothing stand-out about it. In fact, if some other performer was singing these songs the same way but without all the bullshit costumes no one would think twice about it.

sorry but Michel Gondry is great in what he does and what he says it's true. I love lady gaga, telephone was a good video but nothing else, it doesn't have that thing that for example madonnna's videos have as you are trying to say, lady gaga is not a legend, she's not an icon…not yet and her videos are sometimes too much… i'm not saying that are bad videos, i actually like them but they are not masterpieces and they are not well edidted like telephone..too much pauses because she cannot be a icon and a legend riht away.

Hold on, why is Gondry, apparently, so much better than Akerlund? They've both made wonderful videos but when it comes to directing a music video, Akerlund wins as far as I'm concerned and he has the Grammy to prove it. Gondry created magic in Eternal Sunshine and The Science of Sleep was good as well, but Be Kind Rewind was a bit of a letdown. Comparing him to Akerlund isn't really fair seeing as Akerlund has only just made the leap into feature films whereas Gondry has been doing feature films for a couple of years. And don't call either of them geniuses (or Gaga for that matter), they haven't been around long enough for anyone to come to that conclusion.
He's right, the video makes it's more interesting. If it didn't have a great video gaga's songs wouldn't be hits. I love bad romance though, the video makes that even better. The rest are just blah blah

Not everyone likes Lady Gaga! Get over it. You talk about her as if she is the second coming - she's not that great! There are many more deserving people with talent out there. Just because they don't dress for attention or shock value doesn't mean they aren't talented. Get over yourself and thinking that you are so knowledgeable about the music industry and the fashion industry for that matter.

why is 'surface' or 'conventional' music bad? i would say the large majority of artists are what we expect, and everything that's been done has been done before it's just human nature to take inspiration from things in the past. At least Gaga's trying to do something a bit different and definitely putting in the effort!
