Lt. Dan Choi And Capt. Jim Pietrangelo Arrested!

This is so sad…

After publicly protesting the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy by chaining themselves to the White House fence, Lt. Dan Choi and Capt. Jim Pietrangelo have been arrested.

Authorities reportedly informed the growing crowd of protestors that if they didn't leave the vicinity, they would all be arrested, leaving the two heroes to be taken into custody.

Watch the video of the arrest above.

We are so proud of them for standing up for gay US citizens everywhere!! Our country's leaders should be ashamed of themselves.

Equal rights should be for everyone!

      ITA!

    2. 2

They are not hero's because they chained themselves to the fence. They are for serving our country. Anyone that chained themselves to the fence of the white house would be arrested so why should the leaders be ashamed??

    3. 3

This is completely ridiculous and disgusting - beyond a human rights violation. LT Dan Choi is a hero who served his country proudly and then was fired for who he is and now is arrested for protesting it. OUTRAGEOUS!

    4. 4

They chained themselves to the White House gate…they should be arrested. This is stupid!!!

    5. 5

good for choi and pietrangelo. i hope those fucking pigs who arrested them felt like total shit for what they were doing to these two HEROES who serve our country despite the fact they that are discriminated against. this policy needs to be changed NOW.

    6. 6

i hope someone gets them out soon, its sad how you can be arrested for expressing your opinion

this is so disgusting. what kind of sickening world do we live in that people cannot be accepted for who they are. i am straight and i accept every person for who they are. fat, thin, black, white, heterosexual or homosexual… a human being is a human being and there is no need for this kind of disgusting behavior!!! especially from law enforcement officers!

    11. 11

Hey, Mario! Why don't you go chain yourself to the White house fence.
Maybe then you'd also get arrested.

    12. 12

Oh no, say it isn't so! Hmmm, maybe if they didn't try to force their PREFERENCES as 'rights', then they could go out and make something of themselves…what a waste of time

    13. 13

don't ask don't tell was one of the stupidest policies to ever come out of the white house. Another time gays were promised rights and that was the best that came from it. Don't you guys feel used? being told you are getting all these rights to get your vote and then this lame crap comes out? I would rather be told NO upfront and protest that. At least the republicans are truthful right from the start that they do not want to give rights in the military instead of making promises.

It reminds me of when women wanted the vote and got arrested for protesting in front of the white house!!! equal rights for everyone!!!

    17. 17

Re: Aussieone – wow. that's really depressing. thank you for posting that. too bad we suck as do so many others. i'll never understand why people hate other people because of who they love. it's pathetic.

    18. 18

What about the rights of the soldiers not wanting to share showers with him? Once again…the right's of one man overshadowing the rights of all other men.

Has anyone ASKED the soldiers how THEY feel about it? My brother-in-law sells new homes up the freeway from a Marine base. The majority of the Buyes are military. HE'S asked them. 100% have said the same thing: "Never going to work unless they make separate quarters."

I am not military and never have been a member of our military. Thing is, I would assume that less than 5% of those on this site are military and we ALLLLLLLLLL know Perez is far from it! VERY, VERY, VERY easy to shout "Hero!" and "Down with DADT!!" while sipping a Latte on Sunset Blvd. Try doing that in the Middle East. No friggin clue. None.

    19. 19

He meant to be arrested. It is civil disobedience. Martin Luther King, Gandhi, and Jesus all meant to get arrested. That's how the deal works.

It takes a lot of chutzpah in the era where the DHS can throw your ass in jail for fucking ever to do what he did.

I'm not a big fan of the government, the way the military is run, etc, but I think it takes cojones do do what they do and he certainly seems to have them because he is breaking the law and will go to jail over it unless he gets a presidential pardon.

AND IF he gets one, I'll be slightly pissed that Leonard Peltier NEVER got one and neither did MLK.

    20. 20

I thought Prez Obama fixed this. What did I miss?

    21. 21

Not sad at all. This is what civil disobedience is all about. He knew what he was doing before hand, he is not a stupid man. Standing up for what you believe in, there may always be a price. KUDOS to him for being willing to do it, in uniform even.

    22. 22

      Hero

    23. 23

wait didn't they start the repealing process of the Dont Ask Dont Tell already?

    24. 24

Re: brooke_sari – Chain yourself to the White House fence and see what happens. My mother would be arrested for it and she's never even had a parking ticket. Derrrr….

    25. 25

I am proud of them both for being so brave and honest. today and in the military - it really is a gross shame that people cannot serve openly…in these times especially. it's about time this was repealed.

    26. Visa says – reply to this

      26

Looks like they are getting equal rights to me. Both were equally read their miranda rights. They were equally told they have the right to remain silent, and that anything they say will be used against them in court; they were cleary informed that they have the right to consult with an attorney and to have that attorney present during questioning, and that, if they are indigent, an attorney will be provided at no cost to represent them. Seems pretty equal to me. Of course since they are not civilians, miranda rights can get a bit sticky.

    27. 27

i love my gays TRUST ME! i live for them (former flight attendant and always a fruit fly) but what people do not understand is that this rule is in place for their safety. repealing the don't ask don't tell policy is going to do nothing but destroy the sanctity of the military. I always wondered why they couldn't get rid of it and my husband explained so many good reasons (i am an army wife). allowing this to be open will allow so many more bad things to go on. right now in the military cheating is grounds for permanent dismissal, but if we repeal DADT then swingers will come out and say that we need to allow them freedom too. what next? the military doesn't punish people for being gay, they just don't want to know. not everyone in the world can be as accepting as some of us.

    28. 28

Re: !!whuh – Those whose 'PREFERENCE' it is to have sex with and fall in love with people of the opposite sex have the right to serve in the military openly and get married. So their preference is their right. Which means not everyone has the same rights.

    29. 29

Re: Indrid Cold – Nice try, but it's not the rights of ONE man. It's the rights of many men and many women. These military men shower next to gay men every day, but just because they don't know it it's okay? And, I don't know about anyone else, but for me personally, if I was stationed in the midst of a war zone, I don't think I'd be spending all that much time worrying about who I'm showering next to…

    30. 30

Re: postcardstocali – Hi. Apparently you are not familiar with the UCMJ-Uniform Code of Military Justice. LT Dan Choi has broken not just civilian law by chaining himself to the White House fence, he has broken UCMJ by "protesting" IN UNIFORM. He knows, as all military personnnel know, that it is against the UCMJ to protest while in uniform. So, instead of getting an other-than-honorable discharge (which is given to those who break DADT, he's going to be court martialed, and will end up with a dishonorable dischage, which will in turn cause forfeiture of any military benefit he may have gotten with the OTH discharge. When he goes to get a civilian job, he's going to have many problems, due to the fact that employers will ask why he was discharged from the military, and in fact, will ask specifically what kind of discharge it was (and will ask to see his DD214 for verification). I admire him standing up for his rights, but the fact that he did it in uniform is wrong. That's not heroic, that's a lawbreaker.

    31. 31

Re: Indrid Cold – what are the heteros so scared of? what is going to happen if they are in the same shower? do you really think gay people just lose their minds when they see someone of the same sex naked? do you really believe that they spend every minute of their day looking to rape somebody? that's ridiculous and frankly, people with this attitude need to get over THEMselves, thinking that they are so attractive that people can't stop themselves from slavering over them at the very sight. attitudes like this kept racial segregation going for WAY too long. homophobes need to be FORCED to get over it just like racists were FORCED to get over it. it's embarrassing to read this kind of attitude from my fellow heterosexuals. someday, years from now, when we are all finally over this discriminatory bullshit, people are going to look back at these paranoid assholes who are so afraid and hateful toward gay people and see them in the EXACT same light that we look back and see racists from the 50s and 60s. all of these people who love to fling around the hate will be seen as embarrassments by their ancestors. the history books will not look kindly on all the ugliness and hate-mongering by homophobes determined to deny civil rights and dignity to gay people. grow the fuck up, you sad losers.

    32. 32

Re: PacDan – "…You don't think…" Meaning neither you nor I would know as neither of us are military. Very, very easy for us to cry REPEAL DADT from the air-conditioned comforts of a free country.

Again, I go back to ASK THEM!

    33. 33

Re: tigrrrlilly – Tigrrrlilly: Please tell me why we have separate facilities for men and women then? By your logic, we should not because, and I quote, "what are the heteros so scared of? what is going to happen if they are in the same shower? do you really think gay people just lose their minds when they see someone of the same sex naked? do you really believe that they spend every minute of their day looking to rape somebody?"

REALLY interested in hearing what response, if any, you might have.

For the record, I am not a homophobe, racist or any other kind of idiot. I know you weren't accusing me of being one, I just wanted to state that for the record.

AT THE SAME TIME however, I don't live in La-La Land either. I don't believe anything can make everyone happy. I don't believe that Jihadist terrorists wanting every man, woman and child in the West dead "just need a hug". And I don't believe there is a pretty little simple answer to all of life's problems that will make everyone happy.

    35. 35

So Perez, R you still going to swing the Presidents ball sack? You pumped him up as someone that was going to make MAJOR changes for Gay Rights, and look, right in his own front yard!

    36. 36

If people come out then the fair thing IS to give them separate quarters like men and women are separated now. They are separated because of the harassment that comes from putting people in high stress situations and then asking them to justify behaving themselves.

It is very hard to do what they do every day. They break and cross so many moral ethical lines. Women are harassed in the military. That is why they do separate them. It is not because they look different. It is to allow that sanctity and privacy.

That said, I don't think it should matter if they separate them if they are allowed to be open about their preference. It would save a lot of headaches and move the process along.

I would not want to be naked in front of a straight guy OR lesbian because of the sexual tension. I would and have been naked in front of my gay roommates because there is zero sexual tension. I don't think they are "sexually" judging me.

I dunno. I'm for them being able to say who they are EVEN tho I can't understand why anyone would join today's military after all the BS Bush and Cheney pulled. I just think if they choose to come out they will need to make changes.

    37. 37

Re: ickychicky – Don't forget to factor in the fact that Capt. Pietrangelo was discharged in 2004 which means that by him protesting in uniform, he is in fact impersonating an officer.

    38. 38

Re: PacDan – Rookie…yeah…not everyone has the same rights. Get used to it. To withhold special benefits is not to violate someone's civil rights. Our laws and policies routinely "discriminate" (or "differentiate") between people. We give special benefits to homeowners, to operators of low-emission vehicles, to people who make charitable contributions, to people who carpool, etc. The intent of these special benefits is to promote behaviors that are in the best interests of society. To use special benefits to encourage favorable behaviors is not to violate the civil rights of those whose behaviors are not equally incentivized. Encouraging some practices over others is not the same as depriving people of equal protection under the law. There is a difference between "protecting" behaviors and "promoting" behaviors.

    39. 39

notice this story didnt get on any media site either– I would expect it to be front page CNN.
      Interesting its not…

    40. 40

      The are NOT heroes!

    41. 41

Well, duh! Isn't that what happens when you chain yourself to poles? Same thing would have happened if it were straight people…

    42. 42

Not that their cause isn't legitimate, but anyone who had chained themselves to the White House would have been arrested. They are lucky the authorities let them stay chained for that long.

    43. 43

Yippi we are all impressed..Now get back in the closet sissy boys!!!!!! are they navy boys who have been out to see too long ??

    46. 46

Re: Indrid Cold – well i am military and have been in the army for 4 years. I shower and live with straight soldiers. Not one complaint against me…you want to know why just because im gay doesn't mean i will hit on every many i see. Im gay but when i put on the uniform Im a soldiers first. I just want the right to love who i love without being penalized for it….just understand that

    47. 47

Re: loveliivelife – as a gay soldier who fight for this country i just want the same rights given to my straight peers

    48. 48

DOD Instruction 1334.01 prevents the wearing of the uniform in demonstrations like this. This guy should be court-martialed for breaking the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

      Article 88: Contempt towards officials,
Article 90: Assaulting or willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer,
Article 117: Provoking speeches or gestures,
      Article 125: Sodomy?
Article 133: Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman,
      Article 134: General Article

When he gets in trouble he's going to cry about how the military court-martialed him because he was gay.

    52. 52

Re: cyatic910 – lol as a paralegal in the military let me say you are absolutely right….and im sure Lt, Choi would care if he wasn't already being kicked out of the military for being gay. Oh yeah and as for Sodomy, Im sure alot of soldiers could be charged with that both gay and straight. Lt. Choi is a West Point graduate, he is no dummy, he knew exactly what hes doing and god bless him for it.

    53. 53

Re: KLWhite – i might be wrong but i just think he was discharged from the military. He didn't lose his commission as an officer. So he wasn't impersonating a officer, he is simply an officer who was kicked out of the military. Thats not what we consider impersonating an officer

    54. 54

Okay Bitches! You asked for it and now your gonna get it! Now Mary is going to call in the Gay Liberation Army and it's not going to be pretty! Balls to the walls Girlina! Mammas taking out the trash!

    55. 55

Actually, you really don't give a shit or you would have been there.

    56. 56

Re: Indrid Cold – just becasue someone is gay doesnt meant that they are attracted to every single person of that sex
it has nothing to do with sharing showers… the person is gay, not perverted!

    57. 57

What happened to the right to peaceful protest??

    58. 58

Re: Alliestp – actually not everyone who cares could be there… not everyone lives in DC and hardly anyone now can afford to fly out there to protest for an hour… it just doesn't make sense. but not being there def. does not mean you don't believe in the cause.

    59. 59

Re: tigrrrlilly – RIGHT!! That's everyone's excuse "oh i don't want some gay guy/girl checking me out". Bitch, you ain't hot shit- they don't want you. Homophobes are so ignorant.

    60. 60

Re: Indrid Cold – you are so dumb. you really think any gay guy would join the military just to creep around the showers? Grow up and get a grip. you have a seriously skewed view of humanity.

    61. 61

Re: kristieq2 – how does being gay make you a swinger? You think gays are just sexual freaks? obviously you DON'T know any gays or you wouldn't be so ignorant.
