MGMT Ostracizes Fanbase Because They Don't Want To Be Mainstream

Bad attitude, guys!!

MGMT is apparently FAR too hipster for pop music and as a response to the massive success of their first album, Oracular Spectacular, decided to poo-poo the tunes that made them relevant on their second record, Congratulations!

We think experimenting with your sound is totally acceptable if it's for creative growth and not just because you don't like that your fanbase is mainstream!

They also turned down the opportunity to tour with some big names just so they can be "different"!

Bandmember Andrew Van Wyngarden says:

"We've recently been offered support slots with a ton of big bands. Really huge, enormous, big bands - Like Lady GaGa and U2 and Coldplay and Foo Fighters. And we turned them all down. We really didn't want to do any of that. I think on some level Congratulations is a reaction to the success of the first one. I mean, of course we were happy and felt lucky that stuff happened, but it wasn't really what we were shooting for. I think a lot of people misinterpreted and misunderstood what we were about."

Ben Martin Goldwasser agrees:

"Well, we really do feel like we were blown out of proportion by everybody. We don't feel like pop stars, we feel like a rock band. We don't want to play arenas. It's not our mission."

There's nothing wrong with playing in arenas to a bunch of people who want to listen to your music.

Sounds like these retards flunked Business 101.

  2. 2

I have their first album. And with attitudes like that, I don't think I'd support them by buying their next.

  3. 3

Going to concerts at Arenas SUCKS. I totally understand where they are coming from. They're indie. They want to stay that way, good for them. I would love to see them at a small venue!

  4. 4

I agree and suport them for that…i mean i liked them since a while ago and all my friends would look at me weird for listening to their sounds, but as soon as they became more mainstream all my friends were up on them, and its like "wth you dont even like em", lets be honest some people just listened to them because thats what everybody was doing…

  5. 5

I for one now like MGMT even more….and if KOL had any dignity; they would have went this route two albums ago

  6. 6

Perez. If the fucking members of the band want to keep it low-key/indie/hipster/ street-level, then you should applaud them for valuing integrity and creativity over greed and fame. Who do you think you are, everyone's fucking band manager? I wonder how many great fucking bands broke up because of some dipshit "manager" telling them what to do all the time. Personally, I don't ever go to arena shows, ever. I even turned down the Rolling Stones. Arena shows are too huge. I can't see the band or enjoy myself, so what's the point? I want to EXPERIENCE MUSIC AND REBEL AGAINST THE GREEDY CAPITALIST MACHINE THAT SEES BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES AND PRODUCES LAME THEATRICS.

  7. 7

While I admittedly do not listen to MGMT or even care to, there is a different side to this story, at least in theory. When Pink released her first album it was pure hip-hop. This was not the genre she chose for herself and it was more or less forced on her, yet she developed a large fan base quite rapidly. While she is certainly much larger now, as is her fan base, many of her original fans felt that by trying not to "sell out" she in fact did just that, changing everything about both her appearance and style. Other artists have been put in the same place, while still others simply decide that the direction their careers have taken is not the one they ever intended. Again, I cannot disagree or agree with this band's decision, but wanted simply to put out there that it is entirely possible that this is not a band trying to ostracize fans, but merely a band who wants to do what it is that they believe they are meant to do and to be who they really are.

  8. 8

to be honest, perez needs to butt out of the alternative/ indie music scene. this website is about celebrities, but not every performer wants to be famous. first you call vampire weekend douches for not blowing their number one record out of proportion, and not MGMT? it's not like they're saying "fuck everyone that likes us". it was probably just weird for them to be so successful since they never thought they'd become so mainstream.

  9. 9

MGMT get your head out of your asses!! You arent THAT big!

  10. 10

I agree with them. If they were to tour with say… Lady Gaga, they would have lost all credibility with tons of their true fans. They are a psychedelic rock band, not a pop band. If Lady Gag is the true artist she claims to be, then she should understand where they are coming from. Good move MGMT! Don't be pigeonholed as a pop group!!!!

  11. 11

Long live MGMT. Congratulations. Keep up the good work. Perez has horrible taste in muzak. F Slimy.

  12. 12

Why do you even write about music here when you're completely clueless? Playing arena concerts with media whores like Lady Gaga is not for everyone.

  13. 13

There's nothing wrong with what they're saying - actually they sound pretty smart to me!! Thank GOD they didn't tour with Gaga - they would definitely have lost my respect.

  14. 14

Frick, MGMT. This pisses me off. Why would you NOT want to make money from music you write? So stupid.

  15. 15

its about their music, perez and not the money. if you were creative you would understand but you don't.

  16. 16

Yeah, MGMT. You are so under the radar. Fucking PLEASE. These guys should move to Brooklyn, wear nothing but scarves and American Apparel tight pants and have a threesome with Devendra Banhart.

  17. 17

Well fuck off then you hipsters, and don't bother making any more shitty music.

  18. 18

You stupid fucking children. When you grow up, you'll recognize that this whole "idie" crap is just your own dillusional effort to be relevent. If you want your music to be heard only by a true fan base, then give it the fuck away. Play on the side of the road and eat off the dollar menu until you die of scurvy. But one look at the vapid looks in their eyes and the fact that they attend "industry" events, they're just posers like the rest of you frauds. Enjoy your day, and remember, I don't want to be responsible for you. Get jobs and take showers. Peace out.

  19. 19

dumb kids. will so regret this as they get older.

  20. 20

you're just a famewhore and you love exposure because you're a blogger. you're not a musician who needs to avoid compromising to opening for pop bands because of the hollywood rock machine. if they want to attach a different meaning to their product, let them. you suck.

  21. 21

sorry, but i'll have to disagree. being different is what i do and MGMT is one of my favs. i dont want other douche bags listening to amazing music.

  22. 22

Interesting… I saw them open for PAUL MCCARTNEY at FENWAY STADIUM in Boston.

Anyone ever heard of either of those two artists?

  23. 23

Interesting… I saw them open for PAUL MCCARTNEY at FENWAY STADIUM in Boston.

Anyone ever heard of either of those two things?

  24. 24

Re: asquared – because its not about the money, obviously. if it was, they would take those big arena slots. they just aren't into that.

  25. 25

I can see where they're coming from. A lot of fans actually stop liking a band after they become mainstream. It does suck when your favorite band is all over the radio and EVERYONE is listening to it. However they did pass up a pretty good opportunity..I'll still liking them. They might not be the brightest but there music is amazing.

  26. 26

that makes me like em more!
it should b about music and not $$$

  27. 27

They sound too cool for school - I don't get it. Doesn't music come from the heart and soul no matter where the place? I could understand if they came out and said that they feel the most themselves when they play small venues where they feel like they can interact with the crowd, but to say they're a rock band and not pop stars makes them sound like they think they're better than Lady Gaga, U2, Cold Play. Reality check: Lady Gaga >>>>> MGMT, anywhere, anytime.

  28. 28

Good for them for knowing what they want to do, and not doing anything to satisfy the masses.

  29. 29

Re: BitsyBites – They seem pretty humble, actually. It seems more like they don't want to be as big as those.

At least they're real, unlike Lady Gaga.

  30. 30

i hate this band so much. their music sucks balls. it pisses me off that they play this shit in skateboard videos. i grew up in a time when music was good in skate vids. now all these kids are listening to wack shit like that kids song. makes me want to give someone a thousand papercuts and pour salt on them if i hear that stupid ass song again. they think they're cool and underground but they're not. say hello to the next chumbawumba

  31. 31

I respect that they want to maintain their artistic integrity and are at least pretending to not be playing music for money and fame but to play music. Then again, this is perez so chances are it's a desperate attempt to stay relevant. I hope it's because of music though.

  32. 32

say hello to the next chumbawumba. they think they're all underground but they're not. they suck balls! i can't stand that kids song. it makes me want to give someone a thousand papercuts and sprinkle salt on them and rip what's left of my hair out

  33. 33

If their mission is to look like they shop at goodwill & get fashion tips from bag-ladies, I say mission accomplished.

  34. 34

By them doing that, it just shows me that they're actually in this business for the music and not the money. I like them even more now.

  35. 35

So HAPPY…that they are going to play smaller venues…i dont think alot of people actually got their music, they just hear the catchiness of it but not the words.

  36. 36

Once again Perez, you're a dipshit. Nothing in their statements sounds ungrateful or like they think they're too cool. They simply don't want to be in that super star world. They don't want that lifestyle. It's not for everyone. It takes over you. They just want to make music, is that so horrible?

  37. 37

Pig Face, they should be listening to you because you've been such a BRASILBALL, AMAZEBALL, HIGlarious success promoting Slimy?

  38. 38

How come they didn't have a problem opening for PAUL MCCARTNEY at Fenway Park!!!

  39. 39

What a novel thought!! Next time, I'll just tell my boss to keep my raise because, quite frankly, that's not what I'm about. SHUT THE HELL UP, MGMT. Feel lucky ANYONE goes to your shows. In 10 years, you'll be playing those tiny bars you want so badly and that'll be the best you can get. Is that going to pay your bills? Probably not. Work now and save your cash.

  40. 40

Naturally, someone who is 100% about money and fame wouldn't get why they wouldn't want to play arenas. Everyone has their own reason for making music, and some of us do it because we just fucking love it. Not for money. Some of us would be happy playing on a street corner if it were our only option. It's their careers, and they don't want to be what Perez Hilton and the Gaga pop market thinks they should be, they want to keep it real and play for the fans on a more intimate level. I don't see why that's a big deal or how that makes people feel like they shouldn't support their music. Oh noes guys. You won't be in row ZZZZ and feel like you should have just stayed at home and listened to the record because you can't even see the band. Booooo. If people are buying records because of how famous the band wants to be, they're buying music for the wrong reason anyway.

  41. 41

I DON'T BLAME THEM, A LOT OF ARTISTS LOSE A LOT OF "SUPPORT FROM THE BEGINNING WHEN YOU BARELY HAD A PENNY IN YOUR BANK" FANS WHEN THEY START GETTING MAINSTREAM. THEY DON'T GET THE 'TRUE' RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY USED TO HAVE WHEN THEY STARTED WITH BARELY NOTHING. THEY CARE MORE ABOUT THEIR MUSIC THAN MONEY AND FAME. SOME PEOPLE ONLY LISTEN TO THEM BECAUSE IT'S WHAT EVERYONE IS DOING, AND CLAIM TO BE A "FAN" WHEN THEY'RE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF FAKES AND POSERS WHO ONLY KNOW 1 OR 2 SONGS FROM THEM WITH OUT EVEN KNOWING THE MEANING OF THE LYRICS AND APPRECIATING IT.
EXAMPLE: THIS DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MUSIC, BUT I'M JUST GIVING YOU AN EXAMPLE OF A SITUATION THAT ACTUALLY OCCURED BETWEEN ME AND 2 FRIENDS.
WHEN I STARTED WEARING BLACK NAIL POLISH LIKE YEARS AGO, MY FRIENDS USED TO MAKE FUN OF ME FOR IT. CALLED ME "EMO" AND SHIT(NOT IN A GOOD WAY EITHER), ALSO USED TO SAY "EWW!". I DIDN'T CARE, BUT I JUST FOUND IT REALLY IMMATURE AND ANNOYING. A YEAR LATER WHEN RIHANNA AND OTHER BIG CELEBRITIES STARTED WEARING BLACK NAIL POLISH, THE SAME FRIENDS THAT SAID "EWW" AND CALLED ME "EMO" STARTED TO DO IT TOO. I CONFRONTED THEM AND CALLED THEM A BUNCH OF SHEEPS AND FOLLOWERS. THEY LOOKED GUILTY AND KNEW I WAS RIGHT. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF FOLLOWERS. THEY ONLY DO THINGS WHEN IT'S COOL AND EVERYONE IS DOING IT. BUT WHEN IT'S NOT IN, THEY LAUGH AND TEASE YOU. LAME AND SAD.

  42. 42

Not everyone wants to be an obnoxious pop star. There's nothing wrong with that, either.

  43. 43

Well shit, i do. I can sing, want to play arenas and i'm skinny and hot. make me famous instead of ingreats like mgmt. –not that i don't love their music

  44. 44

Well, whatever, so long as their 2nd album doesn't suck

  45. 45

This is the exact same attitude that groups like The Strokes have and it is why their peers, Kings of Leon, have surpassed them. The Kings of Leon have embraced their popularity and they are GRATEFUL for it. Its refreshing to see coming from a band that was once so obscure. These are bands that deserve to be heard by the masses because they are talented! MGMT need to get over their too cool for school selves. If they didn't want a huge fan base they should have stayed in their garage!

  46. 46

mario is confused by the concept of creative & personal integrity over money because he would sell his nanna on the street for a buck…

  47. 47

Who the fuck is this guy and his sister?

  48. 48

What the HELL did you get into music for if you DON'T want to play arenas!?! They are being MAJOR douches.

  49. 49

Re: trinityjade05446 – pink is just as manufactured as the rest of them! please

  50. 50

They're not indie. Sony? Columbia? They're actually mainstream. But I can't see the problem. I actually think it's nice that they didn't tour with U2, Foo Fighers and Coldplay just to earn money. But I guess you think they're douchebags for not playing with your dear Gaga, right? Fuck you.

  51. 51

Really okay so they want to be my fucking ass, just wait 3-6months and they will retract that bullshit statement bc they will realize that they actually are d-bags their manager probably did fit this publicity for them, and I love their music, but they will come back and say the oppsite just wait. Haha lame

  52. 52

    Re: riotgrrrrl1288

I don't understand. If you like a band, wouldn't you want other people to listen to them to support their music?

Also, they suck ass live. They wouldn't sell out arena shows anyway. Smaller venues are perfect for them.

  53. 53

Really you don't understand what they are about? They're simply some dudes that made some electro songs 8 yrs ago in college that caught on to "top 40 listeners" as yourself. Right now they are defining themselves musically, stripped down this is who they are. Oh Wait!!! Yeah, I forgot you're a fat retard. You don't understand real music. You just follow gimmicks or what everyone else likes…

  55. 55

I actually love this band, they are sorta showing a new, unique side of pop music! Taking it in to the next generation in a way.. but if they are not interested in having me as a fan then I am not interested in supporting them. They need to chill and just appreciate the success they have. Besides the hipsters thing is such a fucking played out fad. And BTW Passion Pit, Daft Punk and Bear Force One are all way better than MGMT! The music we love binds us together as human beings!!! The most magical thing in the history of man, is the power of music to light up everyones soul! They seem more interested in their image than their music which is a classic bullshit hollywood/celebrity move. Just appreciate your fans! Appreciate that you get to make music for a living. I know tons of struggling musicians who would give their left nut for your success and would love each and every person who supported them even if they were not their 'ideal fans' (whatever that means) You should be happy that people are moved by your sounds! If thats not what you are looking for then quit playing music and go back to your mothers basement and jack each other off. You can't ever, ever choose your fans. Im disappointed by this truthfully. it kinda breaks my heart that these guys think that certain people are unworthy. Way to alienate your fans guys. Way to sit up in your ivory towers passing judgement on the 'mainstream' ants below you.

    56

This is the refreshing story I have ever read on your website perez. Mock them if you will, but they are far more talented than most "artists" you support (i.e. Ke$ha) . What is wrong with avoiding generic over packed arenas to keep it real and avoid the bullshit. Not everyone strives to sell out with the likes of the bad girls club, you manorexic douche. If you had half the integrity of MGMT you might be considered a mediocre journalist as opposed to a self righteous, jealous fan. Your schtick is molding.

  57. 57

i was sooo excited to see these guys live and they sucked ballz. haven't listened to their album ever since…

  58. 58

My respect for MGMT just went up even more.

  59. 59

Why bash them down because they want to remain indie?
    It's their artistical choice INDEED.
I loved them and I still love them for the music they create.
It was good then and it's good now.
Not everyone wants to go mainstream.
Not everyone feels fit for mainstream.
It's their prerogative to fit the shell they feel like belonging to.
    They still create great music.

  60. 60

    retards and crap

  61. 61

MGMT, unlike you, Perez, don't give a shit about what people look at them as. They're creative and amazing as fuck and who the hell cares that they don't wanna play big arenas. We don't want them to turn into cocky fucks like yourself, now, do we? You're NOT a musician, and frankly I think you have no idea what it's like to be a musician, a creative one, who isn't blown up by the mainstream. MGMT can keep it real. Obviously, you can't.

  62. 62

The headline is irresponsible. They are not "ostracizing their fanbase" as Mario suggests. I don't think he understands the word.
This duo do not want to get caught up in the whole arena rock scene. 90% of the fans who come to these type of shows come for the headlining act. The opening act typically get 40 minutes to play in a cavernous, mostly empty arena while most of those attending are somewhere else pounding beers or smoking up.
I think they should be congratulated for their integrity and not grabbing the easy money. Obviously Mario knows little about the music industry or perhaps more importantly, integrity.

  63. 63

They are NOT a rock band. Rock bands get sweaty on stage with electric guitars in front of thousands of screaming fans. But right, rock bands don't do arenas. I guess that makes Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth etc all pop bands

  64. 64

I TOTALLY get what they are saying and where they are coming from, and support them one hundred percent. Music and artists get ruined by becoming 'main stream.' Sure, they make awesome cash..but there true and long loving fans lose interest in their music most of the time after popularity sits in. They just want to kind of stay underground I think, and I will love them more for that.

  65. 65

    Good for them!

  66. 66

you're mad at them because they aren't interested in making shitty pop music? why? i think the new song is great - much better than the shit on that last record.

  67. 67

They're indie and want to stay a small gig band, I prefer that to huge arena's. Love MGMT even more now.

  68. 68

SPOILED, SPOILED, SPOILED!! Oh god I can hardly keep myself together after reading this. Why don't these spoiled little douche farmers turn back time, ensure nobody buys their album, work in a coffee shop for the rest of their lives, and then ponder what their lives would have looked like if their album HAD become recognized. Then maybe they would have been more appreciative of their success. There is NOTHING with enjoying success or appealing to a mass audience. Why not take this opportunity to try and change what 'popular' music means. Make quality music that drives people away from the typical dribble that has been polluting our airwaves for years?! I understand not wanting to become something disposable, but if you work hard and are honest with yourselves that will never happen. I just dont think these guys trust themselves… and DEFINITELY don't know themselves very well. They are young. They will regret their grand standing when nobody gives a shit about them anymore. Foolish… SO foolish, because they are actually quite talented.

  69. 69

Re: Your Father – OMG!! I totally agree with you. You said it better than I could have. Perfectly said. Perfect!

  70. 70

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH MAINTAINING YOUR STANDARDS AND NOT WANTING TO SELL OUT TO CORPORATE MUSIC.

NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO BE AN ILLUMINATI PUPPET. SOME PEOPLE HAVE MORALS.

  71. 71

they are totally right love the attitude =)

  72. 72

thanks MGMT for being original. you guys are amazing and i love your music! why is that every band/music artist that perez disses or hates i LOVE? i guess it's "time to pretend" your taste in music is any good at all Perez.

  73. 73

    These guys are jerks!

  74. 74

As much of a fan that i am of MGMT, i believe that the guys are being hypocritical..
First off, mgmt music plays on the MTV airwaves.
you have a collaboration with Kid Cudi and most recently with Jay-Z…
    (both mainstream artists)…

it's a bit absurd that the guys are making these allegations when they have done what i mentioned don't you think?

  75. 75

That makes me like them more, and yeah i wish KOL did the same….

  76. 76

Jesus i hate all these too cool for school indie fuckers.
I really do. They are even worse than the mainstream pop artists. Atleast they know what they want and are greatfull.

There is seriously nothing WORSE than a band or solo artist that has had success an then hates on the people who have got them there an then they want to be left alone from the paparazzi etc everything that they FULL WELL KNOW comes along with fame. Then they are forgotten about but always want to come back…

    Fucks me right off.
    These seriously suck.

  77. 77

I saw them last night in Dublin….such a let down. The support band were waaaay better.

  78. amani says – reply to this

    78

Okayyy Perez is totally misinterpreting their words… How is sticking to what you believe is right, and what you want to do and be as a musician the same as hating that your fanbase is mainstream?

    79

They should've said yes to the Lady Gaga preshow, and play a VERY extended version of Lady Dada's Nightmare

  80. Vita says – reply to this

    80

wow you guys really dont understand the basic point of MGMT, they dont wanna be some popular band, they wanna make music, they wanna be weird, and they wanna be different. its kinda their choice. they dont wanna be the stereotype. i love their music, they're my favourite band, and if they went all mainstream, all of their fans (from the beginning) would be PISSED. so stfu perez, and dont you dare mention MGMT on your website again, actually.

  81. 81

heard the new album, not impressed, what a bummer…

  82. 82

i agree with the not touring with those bands. who cares if their big, the music just doesn't fit together. I've been to a few shows that had big names but mixed with bands of a different genre and it just suffers because of it. you don't even try to look at things from the other sides point of view, do you Perez?

  83. 83

As a musician that has been at it for awhile I don't see the logic here. Nobody will even know who they are in two years. They should have went big while they had the chance! This life is once guys.

I personally got quickly turned off by the band because they were over-hyped but I still think it's better to be over-hyped than still on college radio. I streamed the new album because of the hoopla and it is actually interested sounding, though very over-the-top retro.
