Donny Osmond Slams GaGa's Telephone!

donnygaga.jpg

Although he was once a strong opponent of censorship in the music industry, Donny Osmond was taken aback by the content of Lady Gaga's music video for Telephone.

He says:

"I'm all for freedom of speech and against any form of censorship, but all I know is that I'm a parent and I'm upset about this.

Unlike 20 years ago, in today's modern, viral world in which content becomes instantaneously available irrespective of age, I wonder whether the music industry might need to rethink its marketing policies with regard to making an explicit music video containing profanity, sexual exploitation, nudity, and graphic violence available to anyone with Internet access.

I wouldn't want my child to watch this video. Would you? What do you think? Should these two extremely gifted female role models for millions of young girls, maybe, have given a little more thought to the effect it might have on their core audience?"

Parental discretion is advised, Donny!

Do U think he's prude or just plain old?!

Hes not a prude or old - hes right.
and if you didnt have your head up gagas ass…you'd be sayin the same thing.
if this was…lets say…Mariah - you would bash that video for a year.

    2. 2

      he's a Parent and a Mormon…that can get scary

    3. 3

I think the video is intended for 18+. Kids won't really understand it. It shouldve been marketed as such.

    4. 4

      AGREED!

    5. 5

      He is sooo right!!

      6

I think like everyone else.. he's probably got an on/off switch on his TV/computer!! Use it!

    7. 7

If he doesn't wanna watch it don't watch it!
I'm 16 years old, and I just worship Lady Gaga and everything she does, she's just incrdible. I should be able to enjoy her music, shouldn't i?

    8. 8

eh I'm just offended how horrible the video was.

    9. 9

What I don't get is everyone seems to be talking about the "nudity", with which I find nothing wrong, but I rarely hear about the gratuitous mass murder portrayed in the video. Now, that's what I find shocking. At any rate, I'm fine with the video, and against censorship.

    10. 10

I would go for the he's right option you douche.

    11. 11

I agree with him 100 percent. We push and push and push the boundaries til there are no longer any boundaries left. The problem is not with adults viewing these videos it is with young children having such quick and easy access. This video is not appropriate for young, impressionable pre-teens. Where is the sense of decency anymore?

    12. 12

This is stupid. They are taking this shit way too far!

    13. 13

Theres nothing wrong with showing a little sexuality. Our kids are exposed to more then just this video. You dont want your child to watch music videos then block the channel. Its just not this video but there are others that are explicit. So Shut the Fuck up and be happy lady gaga and beyonce are giving you something to look at.

    14. 14

It's ART you prude. No, it's not for my kids either, but they are minors. I'm the decider when it comes to what they are exposed to. Man up Donny and monitor your own brood.

    15. 15

      I think he's right!

    16. 16

That's why you teach your own children to know what they are and aren't allowed to look at on the net, and if they can't respect that, they shouldn't be allowed to use the internet. Quite frankly if they can find a Lady GaGa video on Youtube, they could just as easily find porn on Google.

    17. 17

      censorship = NO…………. parental guidance = YES

I have children, I have limits as to what they can watch/listen to or partake in……… it's MY responsibility to be up front and honest with them about everything…….. ART is ART….. either painting, music, dance…. etc…… it's all ART……..

would we put covers over any of the masterpieces in museums due to them being NUDE??? no….. I would tell my children that there are nude images and that they're too young to see…….

CAN IT CENSORSHIP………… let these artists ROLL with their CREATIVITY…..

KEEP YOUR KIDS OFF TV IF YOU FIND IT OFFENSIVE.

times are 'a changing…… get with the program…….

    18. 18

He is both! Old and prude!

    19. 19

I love her and her videos. But as a mother of a 2 years old, I would definatly not encourage my kid to watch Gaga's videos. Even if nowaydays you can easily have access to sexual content.. It's not a reason for me (as a parent) to let my kid watch anything they want…

But I LOVE her vids, and it is totally appropriate, for ADULTS.

    20. 20

I think he's a parent that doesnt want his young children to see two girls grind on each other in prison. Ga Ga and beyonce are very main stream, and they shouldnt have to stoop to this level to sell records, well maybe they do? Just bcasue you LOVE it doesnt mean everyone has too!

    21. 21

I sort of think he's right. I turned on MTV at 8 in the morning and it was on. I like Gaga but it is a little too graphic to be putting out there for anyone to see. Just sayin.

    22. 22

He's a parent you moron! This vid should be banned. It's disgusting and ridiculous. I love all her other stuff except for that silly vid she made but this takes the cake.

    23. 23

i do agree with him to some extent BUT he has to understand that the target audience is alot older than hes thinking…p.s. your so full of shit perez, when miley cryus was dancing on a pole you were all over that shit, but when ever Gaga does ANYTHING its deemed acceptable and art..

    24. 24

rofl, what a stupid guy, then every porno should be locked and censored cuz every teen or 10 year old kiddo can watch porno in the net.

    25. Visa says – reply to this

      25

It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to figure out anything this mutant is connected with is going to be worthy of censorship. If you are a parent and you catch your children watching any thing this tranny has done, yes use descretion, ground them, punish them, take away their computers and cell phones for a year, minimum. Force them to read a classic novel.

    26. 26

I don't think he's a prude OR just plain old, you flamer bag of stinky gas. I think he's a man who sees the correlation between "anything goes" and the deterioration of manners and respect in this society. I think he understands the value of class, taste, and restraint (none of which GagMe has, asshole). And there's not a damned thing wrong with him expressing his concern and his distaste for the message sent to impressionable youth because too few parents actually parent anymore and so their children aren't taught any better. You, being an irresponsible, stupid, and gay man with no child-rearing experience can't possibly understand or appreciate that. You're part of the problem, Parasite. Now STFU.

    27. 27

Re: Bannah – No, at 16 you shouldn't be watching this. This is borderline porn.

    28. 28

When I was 13, I saw worse content on the internet than Gaga's video. As much as I would not want my kids to watch this video, they probably would. I know they aren't going to go on a half-naked murder spree with poisoned honey. Why? BECAUSE I CAN FUCKING RAISE MY KIDS PROPERLY. Christ. Blame the kid, not the content.

    29. 29

He sure the hell didn't mind the fact that when he was on DWTS last season that all the women on the show are dressed in 'Barely There' outfits, did he? And it's safe to assume that DWTS is a 'family show', right? So I can respect his view as far as from a parents perspective (i'm one too). But don't be a hypocrite.

    30. 30

      Re: Bannah

And you my dear is who he is talking about! You worship Lady Ga GA? Nice. You must have a shitty home life.

    31. 31

      Re: so_infamous

      I totally agree with you

    32. 32

I think that is wrong….as a parent it is his responsibility to "police" what his child views. If he is choosing to let them on the internet unsupervised, then it is his problem. I agree that musicians should be free to make the music/videos they choose. They are not asking to be role models…. they are doing what they love… we choose to make them role models.

    33. 33

      CaCa is a:
WHORE, SKANK, TRAMP, TRANNY, DOUHE BAG, SPERM BREATH, TROLL0P, BANSHEE, BATTLE-AXE, GUTTER TRASH, HOOCHIE, SPINSTER, DYKE, BUTCH, BITCH, SLUT, HO, BIMBO, SHREW, OLD BAT, BROAD, CRONE, WENCH, HAG, PRUDE, FAKE, STREETWALKER, FUGLY, TWAT, HOODRAT, SCUM BAG, POLE DANCER, HOOKER FACE

    34. 34

I kind of agree. The video is a little over the top. I don't mind as a 22 yr old female, but I would DEFINITELY shy kids away from it.

    35. 35

He has a point. It's very easy for a child to get to youtube and view any video they want. I think she should be careful or she will lose fans. Be a role model not a freak show… you'll get a lot more respect.

    36. 36

i think he has a point to some degree. HOWEVER, at this point, being a young mom (29 in may with 2 little boys), i firmly believe parenting should be left in the hands of PARENTS. i'm so sick of hearing how the content on family guy or south park is bad, musical lyrics portrays this or portrays that. You don't want your kids listening or watching it…..then put on your adult panties and parent. i don't understand why everyone wants to blame media. parenting starts at home, so lets stop being lazy and blaming everyone else for what you're allowing your kids to do as they please. i can't tell you how many times i'll go to the mall and these teenie bops are barely wearing clothes, they have no manners. god forbid they say Thank You for holding a damn door, etc

    37. 37

Donny stfu. then every porno should be bloked cuz every 10 years old kiddo can watch it.

    38. 38

He is right, as a mother of two, I would not let my kids watch the video but they can listen to the song, nothing to do with freedom of expression and by the way, the video has nothing to do with the lyrics anyway.

    39. 39

OMFG IM SOO TIRED OF THESE DAMN MOMMYS AND DADDYS COMPLAININGG…IF U DONT WANT UR KID TO WATCH THIS STUFF THEN CHANGE THE CHANNEL U IDIOTS!! GEEZ..STFU ALREADY

GAGA IS DOING WAT SHE LOVES SHES NOT GONNA STOP FOR ANYONE!!!

    40. 40

I think he has a point. I myself as a Mormon was shocked when I saw that video, I watched it a couple of days ago with a group of Mormon Missionaries, we all agreed it was way out there, it could have done without that lesbian stuff, the rest was alright. I think Madonna has done this all before, Gaga is just taking it to a trashier level.

    41. 41

I'm 25, and I couldn't even watch the whole video- it's just too crass.

    42. 42

Fuck you Perez. If this wasn’t about his precious lady Gag me, he wouldn’t be talking about it. Hypocrite! Go fuck yourself and die.

    43. 43

All this crap has been going on since the invention of video. Madonna was slammed for Justify My Love and Like A Prayer. If I remember correctly they said she had no decency. Then other artists crossed the boundaries of what puritanical society sees as acceptable. Donny Osmond has a right to raise his children as he sees fit however he has no right to offer any opinion on what is right for others. Lady GaGa is not trying to be a role model for pre-teens. She is making music period. And expressing her views as she should. If your pre-teen is exposed to this type of visual imagery I wonder where the parents are. What are they doing other than explaining that sex and violence have been a part of society for thousands of years. How about instead of slamming what you don't like you have communication with your family. Communication, its what you do when you're not drinking, smoking or cursing at sailors!

    44. 44

Perez, if Gaga fellated a turd on camera you would call it Art. He is entitled to his opinion and he expresses it very well. He has concerns. He doesn't advocate censorship but he is expressing his concern.

    45. 45

      He's RIGHT, you ass.

    46. 46

I have to agree with him. The video is too much and i have to be super carefull that my kids dont watch this video. Some video are opening the youths eyes to quickly and they are not mature enough to handle it.

    47. 47

When CaCa was conceived, her mom should of swallowed instead.

    48. 48

      neither, he's right.

    49. 49

He is a parent … NOT prude or plain old. Your opinions dont give ppl options. Perhaps your close minded to that fact that not everyone wants their kids exposed to videos like this. He's allowed to voice his opinion.

    50. 50

He's right. The oversexualization of music today is appaling. Even if he is a Mormon, that doesn't change the fact that a 10 year old watching that video (or rap «music» with halfnaked girls) cannot, contrary to what so_infamous writes, «just take it for what it is». Kids are not born with an innate sense of values.

    51. 51

Gaga's work IS NOT appropriate for young kids-that's why my kids don't watch MTV and I am with them when they are on the internet. I don't think Gaga necessarily WANTS 8 year olds to be watching her stuff or idolizing her and I don't recall ever thinking that she was marketed as "family friendly". All of her songs have very adult themes and language. My daughter's dance class tried playing her stuff for them to practice to-I told them it was not appropriate for little girls (8) to be singing along to "I'll get him hot, show him what I've got"…just sayin'. She's very talented and I don't think she should be censored in any way, but parents need to be up on what these songs really mean and actively decide what you kids can listen or view. I think Donny is a bit misguided to suggest that these types of videos not be made for fear of who will see them. Rather, he should suggest that parents actively listen and view these pieces of art and decide if they are really appropriate for their 8, 10, 12, 14 year old to watch.

    52. 52

He's right - she's slutty and her song is smutty.

    53. Rosi says – reply to this

      53

I sort of get what Donny is saying but as an adult, I don't find it offensive….creative, entertaining yes. As a parent, I don't think I'd want my young children watching it…so they don't. If you know what your kids are looking at, you can protect them. However, if they do see it I think I would be able to explain to them that it's just art..it's not real. My kids are stupid enough to think they should do what they see on tv.

    54. 54

I think when we look at lost little girls and boys like Lindsay, Britney, etc we wonder where their parents are. Donny is doing his job as a parent.

    55. 55

I don't think he is either prude or 'old'. I'm young open minded and a big fan of Gaga, but the video is something I wouldn't like my son to see. It's violent, bitter, and raw in an aggressive way. It reminds me of "Thelma & Louis go Natural Born Killers"
Let the kids to remain kids until they are entitled to be, just like we did!

    56. 56

He's not really talking about the video itself, but its accessibility to minors. If a video was risque 20 years ago, it was either banned or relegated to late night viewing on MTV (although some seemed to have made it through). Now MTV doesn't play videos hardly anymore, so it's up to the artist to market their videos themselves, which they're doing via the Internet. I'm against any form of censorship, and I was the least offended by TELEPHONE. But there was so much pre-hype about this video, yet there was no warning or disclaimer before the video was shown that it just might be offensive to some. That's what should have been done. That being said, it's up to the parents to monitor what their kids view on the Internet anyway.

    57. 57

Perez, please post more CaCa so we can hate this over exposed piece of gutter trash. Please, please, please… for the sake of her career… keep on posting Sperm breath!

    58. 58

Well I find it funny how he refers to Gaga and Beyonce as role models. Just because they are famous and great artists does not mean they should be considered role models. I doubt they got into the business to be "role models"

    59. 59

I agree with him. It is certainly for 18 +

    60. 60

      He is 10000% right.

    61. 61

      I think he's a responsible parent.

    62. 62

However, I see more violence in the video games kids play than I did in this video.

    63. 63

In some ways, I think Donny is right…when does it become too accessible and too much?

I have two young boys and as their parent it is my responsibilty to control what they see in our home. HOWEVER, I am not always around them and there are many kids out there who do not have parents that exercise responsiblity….how do we protect them if they can see videos this easily?

This does not go for just Lady GaGa videos..but for everything else that is material not meant for children's eyes.

    64. 64

Give me a break! As a parent I watched this WITH my daughter of 13 because I do not see a problem with her seeing women kissing or being in control of their own lives…are there some images that we talked about, yes that is my job. Lady Gaga is a woman who girls can look up to, we don't have to listen to idiot conserv, men to tell us what images are right and wrong

    65. Woko says – reply to this

      65

I think he's right. As much as these artists may wish that 25-35 year olds are lovin' their stuff, the truth is, it's mostly tweens and early teens. This kind of video is just not suited to them at all. It's dance music not social commentary or avante garde film. Just dance, Lady, just dance.

    66. 66

The music video was just ridiculous. Regaring the content, I've seen things far worse, in film and such. However, I agree with him. It was nothing more than GaGa walking around naked in various ways covering up her lady parts. It was a dumb video overall anyway. Which is sad, cause I really like her music.

    67. 67

Um, he's right Jackass. You're just upset cause it's your beloved Gaga.

    68. 68

I have a daughter, shes 5 years old and loves to hear Lady Gaga on the radio. I wouldnt want her to watch the video either. However its hard to monitor your kids 24/7, eventually they will see it and hopefully as a parent you are there to discuss what they just saw with them. If the video comes on first thing in the morning while we are getting ready I cant just run and turn it off, that will just make her (and any kid) all the more curious. SO when its over, I just tell her some people act one way others another, some things are ok and some things arent. Adult do crazy things and you being a little girl (or boy) dont need to concern yourself with it. I am raising my child to be an idependent mind not worship and copy others. Be her own person. Isnt that what sesame street has been saying all these years. LOL

    69. 69

They didn't ask to be role models for children they are not kid friendly so if you don't want your kids to like them or watch them shelter them otherwise shut the fuck up

    70. 70

oh shut up donny…If you dont like it or agree with it then change the channel.

    71. 71

he has the right to express his opinion, just like you perez.

    72. losky says – reply to this

      72

so for children everyone else should be denied to watch what they want towacth at an adult age. Lady Gaga is not meant for your 5 year old kid. thats why there is parental shit online where you can block what your children watches. if we are going deep into this then we need to get rid of movies such harry potter because each film has death in it. and kids flying on brooms, dont want your kids doing that. get of twilight because its talking about eating people. get rid of video games because in call of durty and grand theft atuo its alls about shooting and killing hos. why not just get rid of everything for children? as a parent you are in control, if there are sites and things you dont want them to see then you take care of that. the media should not have to parent your children. my parents never blocked anything from me, i was allowed to see anything and play anything i want and im not a mass murderer or into drugs or drinking. and coming from him its ridic, worry about your own family and how they raise their kids because apparantely not that well that his sisters son had to kill himself. Mormon freaks.

    73. 73

it's a goddamn MUSIC VIDEO. get over it, jesus christ. if you don't want your kids to watch it, don't let them. simple as that. seeing it isn't going to end their life. it's art, it's creative, chill the fuck out.

    74. 74

Fuck off donny. you are not relevent in any way in todays entertainment culture. bitter jackass

    75. 75

I think generally the direction society is going in is not a good one. It's all about promiscuity and violence, and frankly it makes me sad that as the years go by, the younger and younger generations are being exposed to these things. Perez, if you weren't busy worshiping and sucking up to Lady Gaga, you would completely agree. But because she is your precious "Gagaloo", you're not going to say a word. If anyone else did it, you wouldn't have left it alone. I think Gaga's music is really catchy and great, but that video was too much.

    76. 76

      I think she's disgusting, and He's right.

    77. 77

he's just a mormon. not exactly known for being tolerant of anyone else. mitt romney? glenn beck? that's what i thought.

    78. 78

Donny really needs to STFU. Its just a video ! deal with it

    79. 79

I hate to say it, but I agree with DONNY OSMOND. Good lord, i didn't think I would ever say that. I think the video is great but would be HORRIFIED if my girls saw it.

    80. 80

i completely think Donny should shut the fuck up lol :)

    81. 81

First off, the video was fucking amazing and I wasn't offended in the least. You see worse shit in movies, very realistic killings and murders. The video was just that - a music video and it wasn't realistic at all. You see more nudity in movies these days too. If you don't want your impressionable children to see it - DON'T FUCKING LET THEM! Increase your parental controls on your computers and shut off the fucking television. Don't expect the general public to censor themselves because you chose to be a breeder. Protect your children better and you wouldn't have to worry about any adult content corrupting them. Sheesh.

    82. 82

I'm Team Donny on this one. GooGoo has a sense of showmanship at the margin, but as a talent she's a BooBoo.

    83. 83

It's 14 minutes of stupid. What any of it has to do with the lyrics to the song, I have no idea. I turned it off after 3 minutes. I wouldn't let my children see it.

    84. 84

Re: Visa – Got that right. There are avenues in which a child should be steered down. The internet, is not one of them.

    85. 85

      not for kids…that's for sure.

    86. 86

At least he was respectful; he's welcome to his opinion. But as someone who's seen yet ANOTHER nipple grace the advertisements in a "fashion" mag the other day, I think GaGa's the least of our worries. At least she's promoting a positive message… if that's how you interpret it. It could just be seen as sex and violence too, I suppose. But as a mother of 2, I say be more interactive in what your kids look at. Promote honesty and TALK to them about how they interpret media images!

    87. 87

Re: MarthaKicks – If you have children aged 12-16 you would be watching there every move on the computer or telivision at all times? I highly doubt that, most people on this site that have children probably just let them run rampant around their trailer park.

    88. 88

My 3 1/2 year old daughter asks to watch "Lady GaGa on TV" every single night before bed. Every night we watch a video (Telephone, Bad Romance, Poker Face and her favorite - Paparazzi). We sing along and dance to videos. There is nothing gross or naughty about it…it's completely innocent - like singing into your hairbrush in front of the mirror. My daughter is so cute when she does her best Lady Gaga impression, "Once you kill a cow, you got to make a burger". Not to sound mean, but frankly the Osmonds are the LAST people on earth who should be giving parenting advice. If he doesn't want his kids watching it, that's fine but musicians are not out to make music that HE deems appropriate for HIS children.

    89. 89

      Neither…HE'S A CONCERNED PARENT!!!

    90. 90

Personally… Has anyone seen the Human Nature video by madonna? It had S&M in it too. I remember seeing this video when I was a little girl, and I turned out fine.
All of you seem to be missing the point. As an artist, Lady Gaga has every right to make her video any way she wants.

    91. 91

Re: HungUpBoyToy – YOu need to get to church. Your no Mormon. Stop claiming you are. Anyone dedicated, would know as much, that she has a mental condition, in which she is making millions off of it. She's demented, and disrespectful. And I can also say, that any missionary, that watched it with you, should be exempt from continueing on with his service. We both know, if your any part a mormon, that during their mission work, they are not allowed to watch any t.v.

    92. 92

I think he makes a valid point….back when I was a teen in the 80's and of the Madonna generation there were a number of video's that could not be aired until after…let's say 10pm…now with the internet it's opened up.
I agree that it is an "Art form" However my issue is with videos, movies, tv etc as a whole….when is it too much? Is it necessary..why can't the music stand on it's own if it's really that good?
our kids are being exposed to so much at such an early age. A junior high school here were I live found out that students were participating in a "Rainbow Club" sneak over to someone's house at lunch or after school before parents get home…boys form a circle of chairs..sit down..drop their pants….the girls all wear different colors of lipstick…and well…do their thing to the boys…so that there is a "rainbow" of colors….the kids were ages 13-15…. why can't our kids be allowed to be kids and save certain content for 10pm plus viewing…maybe videos need a "rating system" similar to movies? Rated R..etc??? no easy answer.

no he's right Perez, i'm sorry you're biased about any lashback against your "wifey"

the fact that parental discretion is advised doesn't mean shit, a kid's not going to be like "oh I'm not old enough for this here i'm gonna turn it off now"

Re: La Garse – STFU Lag Arse! What does being gay have to do with anything?

why are "prude" and "old" the only options- couldn't he just be a concerned, NORMAL parent?? Why is it weird to have kids keep some of their innocence, and NOT see half-naked girls and people being poisoned, all to the soundtrack of a popular song? ridiculous, perez…

I think people with real talent shouldn't need a gimmick to be famous.

Re: mattyesmateo – Well said. But you know as well, as I. That barely anyone gives a rats ass about their kids. Look at how many run around without anyone watching over them, and 5 and 6. People need to take responsibility. And it doesn't start, at a stupid video. It begins at the very moment you decide to have a child. And continues on until, they are old enough to make their own decisions.

While as a parent I can see his point, but at the same time, it's not the artist's job to raise your children; it's their job to create art, that may be cutting edge, but every generation has that cutting edge person that changes the world. Elvis, Madonna, the beatles and so on and so on.

Not only is a prude and no longer connected to pop culture… but let's break it down… he's a member of a church that beleives that Jesus came to USA. That an angel showed their prophet golden tablets buried in the ground, in Upstate NY, that only the prophet could read (convienent). They used to beleive that the black and native american races were inherently evil (and made so intentionally by God)… until that whole pesky "civil rights movement" thingy happened.

PS… I grew up in Upstate NY…. God has nothing to do with that place.

He is right. Unfortunately, most parents don't do their jobs these days. I made sure everything was age appropriate for my kids. They are normal adults now. My friend has been letting her daughter watch r-rated movies since she was 5. At 8 1/2 she pretty much told her teacher what she could do to herself. I believe it was a quote from an R-rated movie.
