Donny Osmond Slams GaGa's Telephone!
Although he was once a strong opponent of censorship in the music industry, Donny Osmond was taken aback by the content of Lady Gaga's music video for Telephone.
He says:
"I'm all for freedom of speech and against any form of censorship, but all I know is that I'm a parent and I'm upset about this.
Unlike 20 years ago, in today's modern, viral world in which content becomes instantaneously available irrespective of age, I wonder whether the music industry might need to rethink its marketing policies with regard to making an explicit music video containing profanity, sexual exploitation, nudity, and graphic violence available to anyone with Internet access.
I wouldn't want my child to watch this video. Would you? What do you think? Should these two extremely gifted female role models for millions of young girls, maybe, have given a little more thought to the effect it might have on their core audience?"

What I don't get is everyone seems to be talking about the "nudity", with which I find nothing wrong, but I rarely hear about the gratuitous mass murder portrayed in the video. Now, that's what I find shocking. At any rate, I'm fine with the video, and against censorship.

I think that is wrong….as a parent it is his responsibility to "police" what his child views. If he is choosing to let them on the internet unsupervised, then it is his problem. I agree that musicians should be free to make the music/videos they choose. They are not asking to be role models…. they are doing what they love… we choose to make them role models.

I myself as a Mormon was shocked when I saw that video, I watched it a couple of days ago with a group of Mormon Missionaries, we all agreed it was way out there, it could have done without that lesbian stuff, the rest was alright. Then other artists crossed the boundaries of what puritanical society sees as acceptable. Donny Osmond has a right to raise his children as he sees fit however he has no right to offer any opinion on what is right for others. Lady GaGa is not trying to be a role model for pre-teens. She is making music period. And expressing her views as she should. If your pre-teen is exposed to this type of visual imagery I wonder where the parents are. What are they doing other than explaining that sex and violence have been a part of society for thousands of years. How about instead of slamming what you don't like you have communication with your family. Communication, its what you do when you're not drinking, smoking or cursing at sailors!

Even if he is a Mormon, that doesn't change the fact that a 10 year old watching that video (or rap «music» with halfnaked girls) cannot, contrary to what so_infamous writes, «just take it for what it is». Kids are not born with an innate sense of values.
Gaga's work IS NOT appropriate for young kids-that's why my kids don't watch MTV and I am with them when they are on the internet. I don't think Gaga necessarily WANTS 8 year olds to be watching her stuff or idolizing her and I don't recall ever thinking that she was marketed as "family friendly". All of her songs have very adult themes and language. My daughter's dance class tried playing her stuff for them to practice to-I told them it was not appropriate for little girls (8) to be singing along to "I'll get him hot, show him what I've got"…just sayin'. She's very talented and I don't think she should be censored in any way, but parents need to be up on what these songs really mean and actively decide what you kids can listen or view. I think Donny is a bit misguided to suggest that these types of videos not be made for fear of who will see them. Rather, he should suggest that parents actively listen and view these pieces of art and decide if they are really appropriate for their 8, 10, 12, 14 year old to watch.

I sort of get what Donny is saying but as an adult, I don't find it offensive….creative, entertaining yes. As a parent, I don't think I'd want my young children watching it…so they don't. If you know what your kids are looking at, you can protect them. However, if they do see it I think I would be able to explain to them that it's just art..it's not real. My kids are stupid enough to think they should do what they see on tv.

He's not really talking about the video itself, but its accessibility to minors. If a video was risque 20 years ago, it was either banned or relegated to late night viewing on MTV (although some seemed to have made it through). Now MTV doesn't play videos hardly anymore, so it's up to the artist to market their videos themselves, which they're doing via the Internet. I'm against any form of censorship, and I was the least offended by TELEPHONE. But there was so much pre-hype about this video, yet there was no warning or disclaimer before the video was shown that it just might be offensive to some. That's what should have been done. That being said, it's up to the parents to monitor what their kids view on the Internet anyway.

I have two young boys and as their parent it is my responsibilty to control what they see in our home. HOWEVER, I am not always around them and there are many kids out there who do not have parents that exercise responsiblity….how do we protect them if they can see videos this easily?
This does not go for just Lady GaGa videos..but for everything else that is material not meant for children's eyes.

As a parent I watched this WITH my daughter of 13 because I do not see a problem with her seeing women kissing or being in control of their own lives…are there some images that we talked about, yes that is my job. I think he's right. As much as these artists may wish that 25-35 year olds are lovin' their stuff, the truth is, it's mostly tweens and early teens. This kind of video is just not suited to them at all. It's dance music not social commentary or avante garde film. Just dance, Lady, just dance.
The music video was just ridiculous. Regaring the content, I've seen things far worse, in film and such. However, I agree with him. I have a daughter, shes 5 years old and loves to hear Lady Gaga on the radio. I wouldnt want her to watch the video either. However its hard to monitor your kids 24/7, eventually they will see it and hopefully as a parent you are there to discuss what they just saw with them. If the video comes on first thing in the morning while we are getting ready I cant just run and turn it off, that will just make her (and any kid) all the more curious. SO when its over, I just tell her some people act one way others another, some things are ok and some things arent. Adult do crazy things and you being a little girl (or boy) dont need to concern yourself with it. I am raising my child to be an idependent mind not worship and copy others. Be her own person. First off, the video was fucking amazing and I wasn't offended in the least. You see worse shit in movies, very realistic killings and murders. The video was just that - a music video and it wasn't realistic at all. You see more nudity in movies these days too. If you don't want your impressionable children to see it - DON'T FUCKING LET THEM! Increase your parental controls on your computers and shut off the fucking television. My 3 1/2 year old daughter asks to watch "Lady GaGa on TV" every single night before bed. Every night we watch a video (Telephone, Bad Romance, Poker Face and her favorite - Paparazzi). We sing along and dance to videos. There is nothing gross or naughty about it…it's completely innocent - like singing into your hairbrush in front of the mirror. My daughter is so cute when she does her best Lady Gaga impression, "Once you kill a cow, you got to make a burger". Not to sound mean, but frankly the Osmonds are the LAST people on earth who should be giving parenting advice. If he doesn't want his kids watching it, that's fine but musicians are not out to make music that HE deems appropriate for HIS children.

I think he makes a valid point….back when I was a teen in the 80's and of the Madonna generation there were a number of video's that could not be aired until after…let's say 10pm…now with the internet it's opened up.

our kids are being exposed to so much at such an early age. A junior high school here were I live found out that students were participating in a "Rainbow Club" sneak over to someone's house at lunch or after school before parents get home…boys form a circle of chairs..sit down..drop their pants….the girls all wear different colors of lipstick…and well…do their thing to the boys…so that there is a "rainbow" of colors….the kids were ages 13-15…. why can't our kids be allowed to be kids and save certain content for 10pm plus viewing…maybe videos need a "rating system" similar to movies? Rated R..etc??? no easy answer.

My friend has been letting her daughter watch r-rated movies since she was 5. At 8 1/2 she pretty much told her teacher what she could do to herself. I believe it was a quote from an R-rated movie.
