Man Refuses Prize After Solving World's Most Complicated Math Problem

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True

This guy is so AWESOMELY insane!!

We LOVE it!!

A reclusive genius, Dr. Grigori Perelman, famously solved one of the world's most complicated math problems, the one-hundred-year-old Poincaré conjecture, and is now refusing to accept a $1 million prize from the Clay Mathematics Institute for doing so!

The 44 year old man apparently prefers to live in St. Petersburg, Russia with his mom and sister, and has been given the nickname Mathsputin.

HA!

According to neighbors:

"He always wears the same tatty coat and trousers. He never cuts his nails or beard. When he walks he simply stares at the ground, rather than looking from side to side."

"I was once in his flat and I was astounded. He only has a table, a stool and a bed with a dirty mattress which was left by previous owners — alcoholics who sold the flat to him."

However, there's no denying this man is an effing genius! Perelman solved the Poincaré conjecture in 2002, and it took YEARS for experts to confirm he was correct!!

When reporters attempted to contact him, he responded, "You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms."

We are officially in love with this guy.

Damn the man, you do what you want, Grigori!!

  2. 2

Sounds just a little eccentric to me.

  3. 3

    PUNK IS ALIVE

  4. 4

Now that is a true person not in it for the money. Very refreshing!

  5. 5

This is old, and boring, news. We want celebrity gossip, anything on the rumours Beyonce is pregnant, or should I check back next week?

  6. 6

I am in love with him too!! xoxox to Dr. Grigori…now leave him to his mushrooms and mathmatics!

  7. 7

    It's the mushrooms :)

  8. 8

all geniuses are weird, and the smarter they are, the weirder. He probably has asberger's syndrome, they say Einstein had it.

  9. 9

    WOW! thats amazing!!!
he's like Finny from 'A Separate Peace"
    simply incredible

  10. 10

Awesome! Einstein was wacky like that too.

  11. 11

    Wild–

  12. 12

    Sounds schizophrenic to me.

  13. 13

He's got more of worth going on in his head than most of us can imagine. He's allowed to think we're imaginary.

  14. 14

looks like Tom Selleck in serious need of grooming

  15. 15

very likely autistic and most definitely amazing!

    16

He's a true individual. It's refreshing to see someone who is happy doing their own thing and doesn't give a shit what the rest of the world says, wants, thinks or does.

  17. 17

Re: soam108 – Thinking the same thing.

that is just brillant. his name is will be known not for money but his god given intelligence alone.

  19. 19

Great job genius. This story is only about a week old. Yawn :0

  20. 20

I love genius! I think it's hysterical that it took them years to check his work.

  21. 21

hahaa crazy but I like the whole picking mushrooms!

  22. 22

Eddie Murphy gets 10 million to play a donkey named Donkey.

    Now who's the ass.

  23. 23

omg i am in lovee! hahaha lets go picking mushrooms

  24. 24

Why do I love eccentric people like that?

  25. 25

that's the type of crazy critter you always seem to run into after you've picked mushies (I saw Jesus one New Years eve on the Gold Coast *pre-police state/nanny-state crackdown* as the clock struck midnight & every motherfucker surged from Cavill towards the beach…I got a little bit frightened & tried to go the other way but the tide of humanity was pushing me straight to him)

  26. 26

MAKES PEREZ LOOK PRETTY DAMN STUPID. THAT MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM IS NOW SOLVED!! THANX DOC.

  27. 27

    Re: Fathom – WORD!!

  28. 28

awesome guy but dang dude get a fucking haircut :D

  29. 29

i thought this was joaquim phoenix

  30. 30

Re: soam108 – i have AS and i do not look like that. quit being a prick.

  31. 31

He looks like an older version of the guy from the Hangover. This fucker is going to kill us all one day. Mark my words. His evil plan will soon unfold.

  32. 32

lmao "I am picking mushrooms". wtf so random hahaha

  33. 33

The ultra high IQs shun mainstream society like this.

Many, many kudos to him for the exceptional being he is. Accolades shouldn't come in the form of prizes and approval from certain elite groups, but within one's own heart and mind. We could all learn from someone like him. Thank you for posting this, Perez.

  35. 35

EVERYTHING PEREZ POSTS IS A LIE!!!!!

Re: soam108 – actualy if someone has Asbergers Syndrome they like talking to people. They tend to talk ur ear off and can talk about anything they are interested in for hours. He might have some mental disorder though that deals with being social.

  38. 38

    Re: Lulu Doom – LOL!

  39. 39

MOST GENIUSES TEND TO BE CRAZY, ODD, AND USUALLY SUFFERING FROM SOME MENTAL ILLNESS.

  40. 40

    Re: blacklily.of.the.valley – LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. 41

Re: soam108 – I was thinking the exact same thing re asperberger's (sp?)

  42. 42

    Re: SeeMe
really? I thought that was Charles Manson at first glance to be honest. There is always a fine line. If you like at super geniuses they are always either awkward or walking the tight ropes to nutsville.

  43. 43

They say it's a fine, fine line between insanity and genius.

  44. 44

I would totally fuck him if he would just give me that money

  45. 45

I have found Dignity and its name is Dr. Grigori Perelman.

  46. 46

    RAINMAN LIVES

  47. 47

    sounds like he's has aspergers…

  48. 48

    Aspergers?

  49. jho36 says – reply to this

    49

hahah this guy is my hero! they seriously need to make a movie about him.. starring daniel day lewis

  50. 50

Re: realshitt – no SHIT PERFECTLY PUT!!! hey let me give this guy a makeover…he can fly to l.a. i bet when im done he will look decent! my worst subject was math…well when it came to algebra!!!!!!!!!!!! he could make a killing here being honest and a genius!! WHOA~~~

  51. 51

The smartest people I know are Kookoo. I say this guy takes the money and gives it to family or a charity - a Russian orphange.

  52. 52

i love people who are smart and successful enough to be socially retarded

  53. 53

    vodka and mushrooms for everyone!

  54. 54

    haha shrooms! fuck yes!

  55. 55

    how refreshing. what a character

  56. 56

This weirdo is not a genius - he's an eccentric freakin' social outcast who's great at math. That's it. He has no clue how to relate to the rest of the human race.

  57. 57

Love it!! He's smart and lives simply. Is he probally messed up?? Yes!! But whatever. Its a thin line between genius and insanity and you see a lot of people who are actors, painters, and musicians straddle that line. I mean I am a die hard Michael Jackson fan and would never talk badly about him and I think he was normal but I also think he straddled that line….I mean I think he was normal, sweet, caring, giving, pure, and genuine but he was also so creative and GENIUS and as Alice says "You're entirely bonkers, But I'll tell you a secret: All the best people are." I also think its the same with Johnny Depp, he is so creative and dedicated and brillant and he is crazy off-beat and eccentric. Anyone who is creative and an artist feels things a different way then normal people and things effect them alot differently.

  58. 58

I would think he would be smart and donate the money to science for cures for cancer or something like that. But he's just letting the greedy ass government keep it.

  59. 59

Re: AliciaMay – lol By the time you check back next week, the news will probably be days old before slow boring nuts Perez posts it.

  60. 60

    Definitely too cool for school!

  61. 61

Ha, I guess he just likes to do math!! ;) And yes someone said it all Geniuses are a eccentric! :) Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and so MANY OTHERS!!

  62. 62

i admire that he's also smart enough to know whose opinions of him don't matter—ours.

  63. 63

    Functioning savant.

  64. 64

Autistic? Possibly, Asperger's No… He's a recluse, while there are different levels of the disorders, people who have Asperger's love to chat away if you give them the chance. People with Asperger's usually have a particular subject or item that they are fascinated with and can chat for hours about the one topic. They can also hold regular jobs with no problems, and can lead a very normal life. Having a disorder that makes him kind of a recluse would make sense. Schizoid Personality Disorder would probably be the correct disorder

  65. 65

I think he suffers from Schizoid Personality Disorder which make more sense to his situation

  66. 66

Ok so he's a genius at math but how can you call someone who turns down a million bucks SMART?? Wtf!! Even if he didn't use the money on himself he could have at least given it away/donated it to charity or whatever.

  67. 67

The full story is that he has already ethically refused a different prize, the top award in mathematics, in 2006. Now people are calling on him to come forward, accept the $1 million prize, and donate it to Russian charities; he has yet to do so. Still a hero?

  68. 68

    hahaha "you are disturbing me…."

  69. 69

So awesome… proves right here that there are a good people (peculiar, but good) still among us. So awesome to hear.

  70. 70

    picking mushrooms hahaha.

  71. 71

Good for him! Screw those people. Who cares? It's his life. Maybe it means more to him than material riches. Or maybe he genuinely doesn't like attention. It sure beats seeing all these people killing eachother over greed.

Right on. Go pick your mushrooms man.

  72. 72

    That's Noel Gallagher of Oasis!

  73. 73

Sounds and looks like a true mathematician. yuck

  74. 74

I heard about this guy on the radio. I guess you gotta be a little crazy to be so smart.

  75. 75

i'm in love with him too! u got competition :P

  76. 76

finally!! someone i could look up to!!

  77. 77

    I love insane geniuses

  78. 78

Just me or does he look like Jude Law + extra hair. "/

  79. 79

It sounds like he has autism, probably asperger's syndrome. It's very common with geniuses.

  80. 80

re Carlops54 ~ yeah , I always think of Noel Gallagher as a genius

  81. 81

take the $ and donate it to some school or math program for underprivledged kids or charity or something. I love the mushroom quote. That made my morning. Yes, sometimes I am easily amused.

  82. 82

im noticing all the positive comments about this story. its interesting that the best is brought out of people when they hear about good normal people in the world. (okay grigori is not quite "normal"… but he's not a celebrity).

i think we are all suffering so much that we wish everyone in the world kept it real like this Dr… then we wouldnt have to try to constantly compete for money

  83. 83

btw, i think under all that hair hides an actually handsome man.. too bad he doesnt care about any of it…lols

  84. 84

He's a genius , he's supposed to be insane. I mean , Van Gough cut his ear off.

  85. 85

So easy a caveman can do it.

  86. 86

oh great my first comment didnt even come through… lovely

  87. 87

With that much money it's never a cut & dry exchange. Sure they wanted him to do talks, interviews… He just doesn't want to sell his soul to the media. I was a math prodigy till high school, but gave it up for modeling-travel since was too young to drive to university where I had a scholarship (was 2 years ahead in school & parents didn't help). Know first hand the change in life style isn't always for the best. Although it worked out well for me since I become more social-happier, but for a guy much older think he should just hang back. Keep doing his work. Maybe someone can send him math books, computers & a new mattress instead of contracted cash! Great comments you all, I'm new on here :)

  88. 88

awesome i had to go on wikipedia to see what the problem was yeah hes a genius lol

  89. 89

Just because he does not conform to social standards does not mean he is crazy. He is probably just above most of it. Honest to god I cannot believe some people here thinking brilliant artists and brilliants minds have to be straddling the crazy, usually its just a smoke screen, a load of bs to pull in silly twats like you who love the drama. Not everyone thinks material possessions are important - news flash!

    90

    awesome

  91. 91

All the people in history who have either done great things, or been geniuses have been a little eccentric. Hopefully he will use his gift to do something great!

  92. 92

take the money and give it to me

  93. 93

Living at home w/his mommy? Prolly doesn't work or pay any rent. Bet his mom is real pleased that he didn't take the money.

  94. 94

Re: SWEETPIECE! – you were NOT thinking that, idiot.

  95. 95

love eccentric people. "I am picking mushrooms" hahaha. way to go bud!

  96. 96

It is so cool to me how the smartest people in the world are always the odd ones. Good for him though. Im sure having the title of that is good enough for him!

  97. 97

Well hell i would have just said ..give me a couple hours ,till i am done picking the lovely wonderful, mind altering shrooms ,then i 'll give my interview and then i want my million . but i am a mushroom lover too and a million bucks couldn't hurt anyone i know

  98. 98
