President Obama Speaks On Cuba

As the human rights abuses in Cuba become ever more plentiful, President Barack Obama has finally released a statement calling for an end of an oppressive era.

He said:

Recent events in Cuba, including the tragic death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo, the repression visited upon Las Damas de Blanco, and the intensified harassment of those who dare to give voice to the desires of their fellow Cubans, are deeply disturbing.

These events underscore that instead of embracing an opportunity to enter a new era, Cuban authorities continue to respond to the aspirations of the Cuban people with a clenched fist.

Today, I join my voice with brave individuals across Cuba and a growing chorus around the world in calling for an end to the repression, for the immediate, unconditional release of all political prisoners in Cuba, and for respect for the basic rights of the Cuban people.

During the course of the past year, I have taken steps to reach out to the Cuban people and to signal my desire to seek a new era in relations between the governments of the United States and Cuba. I remain committed to supporting the simple desire of the Cuban people to freely determine their future and to enjoy the rights and freedoms that define the Americas, and that should be universal to all human beings.

you and your mother and fat sister should head back on the floating door

  2. 2

glad he's so worried about cubans, meanwhile he doesn't give a flying fuck what the American people want for their country……..

  3. 3

"Perez" - I loved you on "The Facts of Life!" When is the reunion show?

  4. 4

did he use a teleprompter and speak like a minister? Just guessing he did.

  5. 5

here's an indea: Let's use the billions we spend trying to "defend" the USA from Cuba and use it for the healthcare plan! Cuba is no longer a threat to the USA (well no more than Mexico or Columbia) and it is high time we lift the restrictions. It is indeed a new era and time to stop thinking like the Commies are still a threat. Time to move on to focus on our real enemies.

  6. 6

    He should
    be more concerned
    over bigger shit piles
    in his administration
    than be worrying
    about what's going
    on in Cuba.

  7. 7

Yet we continue our ridiculous embargo on Cuba, crippling their economy. Somehow a country like Russia or China can do the same things and we will still do business with them. America doesn't give two shits about any country they have no economic interest in.

  8. 8

i love how he created the universal health care and now wants to have relations with the cuban government… yeah, definitely not a communist at all…..

Give them your voice, wtf? Cuba is not our problem, we have our own problems to deal with. Either walk around the White House, take up a collection, have everyone pitch in a few bucks, and go buy Cuba, it shouldn't cost anymore than any of those "as seen on TV" offers, 3 easy payments of $19.99. Or better yet, go be their President.

  10. 10

He's just a talker — says things people want to hear. he loves to hear himself talk. thinks he's MLK.

i liked the days when Obama brokered disputes between a cop and a professor, took Airforce One out for dates with his wife, had happy hour at the White House, body surfed in Hawaii….anything to keep him away from making policy.

  12. 12

Creating a DISrespectful and REPRESSED society is this man's bailiwick. My God. Are we the only ones who see the irony?

  13. 13

Re: Visa – "Or better yet, go be their President." - amen……too bad it isn't that easy to get rid of him……..

  14. 14

wow….it'd be great if he thought US citizens should also be able to determine their future

    You go Obama.
The rest of you haters can fuck off. Boo Hoo healthcare…whine whine…bitch…bitch. This Tea taste delish when it's filled with your tears. lol!!

  17. 17

most other countries don't care what he thinks. blew off the aisian countries last week. Biden was 3 hours late for a dinner in his honor in Israel 2 weeks ago. CHINA is telling US not to borrow anymore money or do the healthcare because we owe too much. Russia has printed in their newspapers that we are making the same mistakes that they made 90 years ago and history repeats itself, but we are too arogant to see that and they are laughing at us. So, of course, as obama reads off a teleprompter with all the pazzazz of a semi comatose hospital patient, everyone is going to say YES, WE MUST!….embrace a communist country. Time for obama, pelosi and reid to get out of their bubble and see that people are angry and don't care what congress and washington are saying.

  18. 18

Re: IvyLeagueBitch – but, but, but we are going to make BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS by spending money!!!! Isn't that the way it always happens? make people spend money and we save money? Count the savings twice that don't exist and the deficit will go down to nothing. You know, they can make it into a nursery rhyme (?) and hit the road with it. do a little dance and maybe hypnotize everyone with it. stop the violence and everyone will be happy. well, at least the ones in CA., only if they get pot legalized statewise

Re: LordKain – Its not considered 'haters' if you love America and think the guy in charge is fucking it up. but sorry, i forgot, liberals all of a sudden take the high road now that a leftist agenda is in full swing. no more disrespceting the office of the presidency or the man that fills the seat. liberal thinking always makes me laugh.

  20. 20

    Do it!
    What a handsome man. Wow!

  21. 21

Re: buck – Keep trying BUCK THE FUCK! The depth of your ignorance has only just peaked the surface.

  22. 22

Re: LordKain – LOL! Their tears can not dissolve the lumps of sugar so they have no idea, how sweet it is!

  23. 23

    What's with North Korea?

  24. 24

17 states filed a suit against the fed government on the basis that American's constitutional rights are being violated by penalizing people in the case they don't purchase health insurance. what's "mr. president" have to say about that?

  25. 25

And that was just about the Guantánamo prisoners. Next he'll be speaking out about Cuba's human rights abuses

  26. 26

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – People will be penalized for not getting health insurance only when they could easily afford to pay for it. If one of those people who could afford to pay for health insurance but doesn't gets sick, everyone would have to pay for their care, so yeah, they should be penalized…I don't want my tax dollars to go to someone who was too stupid to get health insurance.

  27. 27

Re: buck – What's actually funny is that conservatives were the ones saying that your patriotic duty is to stand behind your president, but now that the tables have turned are acting like petulant children.

  28. 28

    Re: NumberPronk

But doesn't being an American mean the government can't force things upon us? Such as health care? As of right now, our tax dollars don't pay for people who refuse to get health care, they have to pay for themselves if something were to happen to them. Though it's not a smart thing to do, don't we all have a right to choose whether or not to get health care?! Whether or not we want to spend our money or anything we choose?

  29. 29

Re: NumberPronk – there should be two options, buy health insurance or don't. if you get sick and don't have insurance, too bad too sad…..to penalize anyone for not buying something just sounds stupid and ridiculous. obama is gung ho on taking away every single american right and turning this into a communist country. i don't think anyone should be penalized for not buying something (regardless of what it is) nor do I think you and I should have to pay for someone who, in your words, "was to stupid" to get health insurance. not really sure why you're attacking me as I believe we kinda agree…….always remember, opinions are like assholes and everyone has one

  30. 30

I just went to Cuba and the US is making it look worse that it is! The people are taken care of. Yes maybe they dont have all the ammenities that we have in CAnada nad the US but they laugh and dance and are happy. Everyone is equal. Thats their way of life and they like it! No one should tell them that they should be something different! By the way it is illegal for Cubans to go to America not the other way around! They have NO BEEF its just the states! Get over it…. sore losers! Cuba is the only county that has stood against the US and is proud of it and can survive with out them! They've been doing it for years and have happy people who are taken care of!

  31. buck says – reply to this

Re: NumberPronk – it seems like its not just conservatives who are 'acting like children' when over 60% of Americans don't like the direction Obama is taking us. Someone is wrong here and I'll stick with the educated majority on this one.

  32. 32

He's a pretty amazing President. I am glad to see him standing up more for issues he said that he would without letting the other 'politicians' stop him. He has successfully put us on the road to healthcare just over a year in office, pretty awesome since that should have taken 2 years. Cuba does need our help, and we help them, they help us.. etc. That's how it works people - it isn't just about 'America' - if we think that way we will go downhill so fast we will be embarrassed to admit we live here. It takes the whole world working together.

  33. 33

Re: LordKain – YES! Thank you…… where are these people coming from anyway? Stop whining… A million small children with low income families will now be insured, get checkups, have clean teeth. But you bitch. bitch, bitch… because you are not educated on the facts. It takes 5 minutes. Look it up before you bitch.

  34. 34

He may only reunite relations with Cuba so he can get all the fugitives from justice out of their country back behind bars in the U.S. where they belong.

  35. 35

Re: buck – Wow 'Buck' I'm surprised to find you here on this site. Who says he or anyone else is a Liberal? sounds like you're another whine, whine, bitch bitch disaster. Sigh. Well 'Buck', maybe it's time to do something smart with those fighting words. What do you say?

  36. 36

Re: Kai Kai – Yes, and if those "happy people" say ANYTHING against the government or any local official they are thrown into jail. If those "happy people" are gay, they are thrown into jail. It is illegal to be gay in Cuba. If those "happy people" who are journalists print any truthful stories of dissidents or even local anti-government events, they and the event participants are thrown into jail. You, as a tourist, only see the "happy people" who smile at the tourists to try to get a free soda out of them, because their own wages don't pay them enough for adequate nutrition.

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – You do get a choice.

  41. 41

    Re: ameliaferrerRe: ameliaferrer
This has nothing to do with him being a communist and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that people in Cuba are being TORTURED for speaking out against their government. Case and point, Orlando Zapata Tamayo. And he gave his life for this cause.
Everyone who is calling Obama a communist on this thread just because of his concern for the well-being of Cuban activists, open up your eyes and do some research. You are all clueless as to what people on Cuba have to go through each day. Obama is right is showing his concern- you should, too.
    Quit your whining.

  42. 42

    Re: Kai Kai

That's their way of life and they like it?…. What you must have seen was the fun little tourist area in Cuba.
Next time you go, check out the real neighborhoods and tell me how much they like living there.

  43. 43

Re: Kai Kai – And, if their "way of life is like they like it' then they should be allowed to have free elections, so that they can have a say that that's how they like it. But, there are no free elections in Cuba, there is only ONE PARTY! And, much coercion and fraud. Let them have free, open elections, over-seen by the U.N. to ensure no fraud, with multiple candidates for President (not just a Castro family member) and then we'll see what the Cuban people really like. Right now, those "smiley faces" say nothing, they're not allowed to speak lest they be thrown in jail. That's what the term "political prisoners" means. Check out Amnesty International and they'll tell you about the number of political prisoners in Cuba. Political Prisoners are people who's only crime is speaking out against something they don't like about the government.

  44. 44

Re: lol777 – Well fucking said. Period.

  45. 45

Get a clue people! The Cuban government is purely COMMUNIST! If anyone (such as Obama) speaks out AGAINST the Cuban government they are being ANTI-COMMUNIST. Jeez, people, this is just basic knowledge. Obama, in this speech, IS BEING ANTI-COMMUNIST.

  46. 46

Re: buck – So, let me get this straight. You actually think the President's approval rating is down because everyone thinks like YOU?
I told you to stop being STUPID. Get your head out of your ASS!
You know why his approval rating went down for me? Because he was being a WIMP and not pushing his proposed agenda-you know, the one that won him the election- through in his FIRST 15 MONTHS!
I truly hope he is DONE playing that ridiculous nowhere game with the Republicans. Fuck them.
I love Obama I voted for him and I expect RESULTS!

    Re: Kai Kai

Hey Kai Kai, news fucking flash- the people you see that are "happy" and "dancing" are those who are part of the communist party. The people of Cuba have two choices- join the communist party or live a miserable, scared life. You think those nice hotels, beautiful beaches, and quality business establishments are owned by the Cuban people? You think the Cuban people see a fucking dime of your tourist money? THEY DON'T. It goes straight to the communist party, to fuel government crack downs like the one in 2003 where 75 INNOCENT men were taken as political prisoners because they have an opinion the government doesn't like.

You think they're happy? How happy would you be if you had to live in constant fear in your own COUNTRY? Open your eyes.

  48. 48

Re: ameliaferrer – You are an idiot! Do you even know what "Communist" is? Bet you just picked that up somewhere and thought it sounds cool. Probably because you are racist and can't just come out and say the "N" word. This country will NEVER be communist and that's the last thing Obama is trying to do, jackass.
What he is trying to do here is set an atmosphere for world peace, MORON.
Something we all almost forget about in the last 8 years!

  49. 49

And to everyone else, be damn grateful that you can go around talking smack about the American government and don't have to worry about being thrown in jail, tortured, or killed for it. We are so used to being able to say whatever we want and pretty much DO whatever we want that any type of political change gets your panties in a bunch.

I'm not here to talk about Healthcare- HELL! Obama didn't fucking mention healthcare. This is a human rights issue and you as HUMANS should realize that you're being both ignorant and mean.

Re: brat93111 – Its wrong on so many levels but lets start with the fact that the government should never mandate its citizens to buy anything, let alone buy it for other people as well. Now lets consider that in our current HC system if a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer 92% of the time she is being treated within6 months. In Canada that number is 55% and in Europe its about 60%. The difference of 30% of the people will equal a lot of deaths so i would thiink liberals would be crying for those people.

  55. 55

Barack Obama. A clear and present danger to the United States of America.

  56. 56

I agree, he needs to focus on America and do his job!!!!

  57. 57

If Barack Hussein Obama was trying to set an atmosphere for world peace, why is it 65% of the population in the USA are not at peace?
A win in Wasington DC does not last forever. We're coming for you in November. Keep telling us it's George Bush's fault, it's really winning us over.

Re: supersongbird – okay, whatever you say "supersongbird"……you're attacking me b/c of a screen name on perezhilton's website…..classy…no ones ever used that before……dumbass……

  59. 59

There are indeed two Americas: one of them works and pays taxes, the other one consists of leeches like supersongbird.

  60. 60

Re: supersongbird – wow - i've read your attacks to everyone else on here that doesn't agree with you…..you really are an idiot…..

  61. 61

Re: brat93111 – @ 40 - what choice would that be? buy health insurance or be penalized?? fantastic choice!!!

  62. 62

Re: buck – Where are you getting your information? And nothing you're saying is adding up..

  63. 63

Reading over these comments, I am both horrified and slightly entertained by peoples different information that they are screaming, and bitching. 60% this, 65% that… well since you're all saying different percentages, someone has to be wrong! And if you look it all up, ha ha, you're ALL wrong. So funny. I guess the lesson here it to educate yourself before you publicly state untrue facts because after that you just look… well, dumb.

  64. 64

Re: brat93111 – you should clearly know how that feels considering you've done nothing but blab yourself……

  65. 65

    Re: DesireeRogersX-WH Fckruppr – @ 59 - best/funniest comment I've heard all day…….

  66. 66

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – Healthy people need some sort of prod to get them to buy health insurance, which, oddly enough they WILL eventually need as we all do. Otherwise the people who really need it, people just like you or myself, won't get it. And we will be back where we started. Down the road, everyone, everyone, everyone get's sick. You can make the choice of, Ok I will NEVER Get sick, I am immortal, so I will pay the fee and say screw health insurance. Or I will be smart and accept it, so that down the line when (you) get prostrate cancer your balls will be covered… literally.

  67. 67

"If you set up a situation where there's a de minimis charge, and that people feel that they can afford to stay out of the system until they're sick, we're going to end up right back where we are today, which is that people don't have, necessarily, and incentive to purchase coverage when they're young and healthy, leaving the cost to skyrocket for people who are older and sicker."

    - Karen Inagi

    She said it well

  68. 68

Re: RobPnMeShouldBRe: RobPnMeShouldB – I wouldn't call proper spelling and grammar in my responses blabbing (wink wink). Even in responding on a blog I make sure that I respond maturely, and not like a 15 year old hiding out in a dark bedroom, or 40 year old man in his underwear sitting at his computer munching a giant bowl of cereal.
It is important that people have their say and share opinions. But even more important is how we go about stating them. We can attack one another, or educate those who need some educating. I vote for the second.

  69. 69

Just because Obama wants universal heatlh care does not make him a Commie.
Wake up people are you that ignorant.
And if you are afraid of Commies and Dictatories maybe you should tell your govt to stop doing business with North Korea and China. SOme of the worst human rights violaters around.
ANd you pick on a poor litte country like CUba.

ANd speaking of Cuba, as long a the USA stays out of CUba I will keep on visiting Cuba every year and enjoy a beatiful country that has not been ruined and spoiled by the AMericans and the greedy money hungry hands

  70. 70

Re: brat93111 – Unfortunately for you, post # 66 shows just how immature your thoughts are…..don't put me in the same category as you. I'm not only a fairly healthy individual but I'm smart enough to understand that I need health insurance coverage. I'm also smart enough to realize that I shouldn't have to pay for the deadbeat, welfare cases because they are the ones too lazy and dumb to not only get a job but to efficiently care for themselves. Maybe if they went to school, paid attention and tried to make something of themselves, they'd be the smart ones too. Now I'm told I have to pay for them to have coverage or I'll be penalized. They can't pay everyday bills, what makes anyone think they're going to buy insurance and then when they don't, they're gonna pay a fine???? Lemme know how that works out……
Also, "prodding" and "requiring" are two entirely different things - the healthy citizens of this country are most definitely not being "prodded", everyone's being "required".

  71. 71

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – Sorry, but day after day post after post you drone on and on about the same point and it isn't even close to FACT! Try looking at other points of view. I have!
Your paranoid, ignorant attitude is inciting VIOLENCE in this country! Have you heard about "Bring your gun to Washington day" yet? Have you seen what these teabaggers are up to? DO YOU CONDONE IT?????
Saying the president is taking away rights and he is a communist isn't an opinion it is BLANTANT LIE! WRONG on so many levels. You just heard that somewhere right?
Unless maybe you just don't like a black president. Then that makes you a RACIST. If that is the case, I take back my apology.

  72. 72

Eloquently said, Mr. President! Thank you.

  73. 73

Re: supersongbird – i don't like you and your self entitled attitude -end of story

  74. 74

Re: NumberPronk – Not all conservative rhetoriticians started out with this mindset. My husband and I were uber liberal, graduating from SUNY @ Stony Brook (a VERY liberal NY school!) Views can change. It's an adult right.

  75. 75

Re: DesireeRogersX-WH Fckruppr – Oh that is factual. Nice!
I happen to have worked all my life, put myself through college and own a home. That enough taxes for you? You call ME a leech? Fuck you!
Let me ask you this imbicile- The way things are now, before HCB passed, who picks up the healthcare tab for those who at the poverty level that cannot pay? HUH? Don't know? AMERICAN TAXPAYERS! You are too stupid to know THAT? REALLY?
Your paranoia and ignorance would be quite entertaining were it not stirring up violent behavior in my country. You know NOTHING about this issue other than what you have been told and what you choose to believe!
I wish people like you could be exempted from this healthcare. Be too funny when you come crawling back!

    Quedio Perez Hilton,

Thank you for posting this, and for standing against a dictatorship of 51 years. Cariños,

  78. 78

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – Dear 'Rob', Referencing my post 66 is a compliment, thank you. I do take care to think of my responses. I think it's sad that you still have a problem with this issue, but I can't do anything to change your mind. I do hope this is not a race issue, as for many it is and they will find anything to complain about toward our President to cover it up. However, it comes to this: you may 'hate' poor people, which is also racist and cruel, Hitler-ish even, but it doesn't matter what you feel about them. They are human beings, they deserve health care. People like you terrify me. Hate is what kills us more than anything.

All I can do is hope for you, that someday you will be educated.

P.S. Many, many middle-class people need this insurance. People making $100,000 a year might need this insurance. Emanicipated teens, Nannies, Caregivers, Assistants, private workers, they need it. YOU don't decide who deserves it based on 'bigot' views. The End.

  79. 79

Re: supersongbird – at least we agree on something - hope healthcare slaps you in the face

Re: brat93111 – Your right, having Americans without health care coverage sucks. But this proposed Health Care reform is not the answer. This proposal is not much different than if the goverment forced you to buy a GMC vehicle or Bank at Citigroup, and if you didn't they would fine you.

  81. 81

Re: brat93111 – I don't care what color the president is - I have friends of all races and I don't discriminate. I don't hate poor people, I hate people that feel entitled to spend my hard earned tax dollars while they sit at home and get high. In my state, you can be on welfare indefinitely. I've known girls that have 5 kids, no "baby daddies" around, no job but they surely have their stash to get high while their pregnant with the 6th. Why in the hell would you want to provide anything at all for a leech like that????!?!?!?!?!? These woman have children so the youngest "has a playmate" so they don't have to take care of them. And now we have to pay for all of them to have health insurance coverage when "mom" got high on coke/weed/meth/etc. the whole time. Now it's my problem that child has health concerns?? I have no problem helping those that need a quick pick me up - pick me ups don't take years. I've struggled but I never asked the government for help because what they give me they can take away. I ate less, turned lights off, didn't have cable and drove only when necessary. It's called being responsible and having pride - something up and coming American's know nothing about. Nowadays its a fucken trough feeding day in and day out………

  82. Visa says – reply to this

Re: supersongbird – Your promoting this HC reform package like its a global healthcare plan that Isreal or other European countries have. Its not even close. I estimate there will be over 500 amendments to this proposal when its all said and done. I read the first amendment to it last night, 74 pgs, and as a small business owner, its scares the hell out of me. This will effect hiring decisions for companies. Small business owners like myself would be more inclined to hire young, single males with no dependents, and lay off those that are supporting families, just because it will save me thousands of dollars in insurance coverages. What it would cost in state unemployment taxes will pale in comparison. This is just a terrible proposal, top to bottom.

  83. 83

Re: Visa – You make some good points, but I will say this: while I am not 100% behind the plan itself, as I believe there are some problems with it, we as a country would still be better off with it than without. (Even though RobPnMeShouldB has a very harsh view on who is deserving which is embarrassing for them, but at least they are honest). The country was challenged to come up with a better plan and it didn't. So now, here on message boards like this, ignorant people use fighting words and poor grammar to initiate non- face to face battles as I don't believe any of them have ever protested or gone beyond their computer. It is good that you voiced your opinion, and that I did as well. But my God, there are some major idiots on here today… Or maybe I'm just a lot nicer than some of them :)

  84. 84

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – So these people with 5 kids and 'baby daddies' are your friends then? Because you said you know them. So you would deny these kids healthcare? People that you know? You would rather see sick? You know they don't get your money directly, right? It is literally into the health care system. They can't buy drugs with your money. Instead, these 5 kids with no 'baby daddy' can stay healthy. If you don't believe they deserve that, well, I have no words for that. You would rather see these kids sick. Wow.

Well I am off to work to a job that pays me well and makes me proud to support people, especially children, who need it. I am of mixed background, I was fortunate to go to a great school, and now do well financially, and I am happy to do my part. I do not fall into the stereotype you have commented of. I plan to make a difference outside of the 'blogs'.

What are YOU going to do today?

Re: Visa – Yes, you voted for you congressperson and senator and president, and the majority elected in those elections then voted for the health care bill. That's what our constitution requires, we have "representational democracy", not "direct democracy" (as in being able to directly vote for a law). Direct democracy has never existed on national issues, it's not in the constitution. Direct democracy only exists in state referendums. And, anyway, I didn't post anything about the health care bill…I'm not taking a side on that argument. I just think the Cubans should be able to have representational democracy like we do.

Re: electrastar – Oh man, do I agree with you on a lot of this! The current Supreme Court is horrendous, deciding elections, over-turning long-held precedents, there have been incidents of voter fraud…the corporate elites have gone back to the old robber-baron days of the late 1800's (before we had reform that cleaned a lot of that up, but we've slid back), we are in horrible shape, but i'm trying to maintain hope. At least we can vote for more than one party, voter-fraud is not endemic, and we're not thrown in jail or sent to the gulag for speaking out against the government and holding demonstrations. So we're not (yet) a dictatorship…but, that's far from saying things are rosy…shit sucks right now…agree with you on a lot.
