Ronald McDonald Retiring?

ronaldwenn2193146.jpg

That's what some folks want!

A group of parents, health professionals and corporate advocates are throwing the iconic fast food clown Ronald McDonald a retirement party this afternoon in Chicago, hoping the McDonald's corporation will take a hint.

These folks are a part of the Corporate Accountability International group and they are seeking the spokes-clown to step down in an effort to stop his influence on children and childhood obesity.

Ronald didn't show, but a spokesperson for McDonald's said that the company never received a formal invitation and even if they had, they have no intention of having their icon step down. The rep explained:

"He is the heart and soul of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which lends a helping hand to families in their time of need. Ronald also helps deliver messages to families on many important subjects such as safety, literacy and the importance of physical activity and making balanced food choices."

That sounds fair. He is a very charitable guy! We think he should stick around!

What do U think?

definitely! Its up to the parents to make sure kids are eating healthy anyways.

  2. 2

YES get rid of Ronald so they can make something children will like EVEN MORE the mascot.

    good thinking.

  3. 3

Good, always hated that creepy clown……..

  4. 4

Well– we know where to find a bunch of incompetent parents this afternoon. Raise your kids your own way– don't rely on companies take responsibility because you feel overwelming. Grow a set. You make rules.

  5. 5

    Um, he's not a real man…

  6. 6

"I feel badly about what I've done with young people. I was the happy face on something that was horrendous." —Geoffrey Gulliano, former Ronald actor who later embraced vegetarianism

McDonalds can hide behind their charities, but the fact of the matter is, that fugly clown represents eating burgers and fast fried food. Talk about exercise all you want, no amount of exercise can undo nasty sub-rate meat burgers fried in grease.

  7. 7

McDonald's should hire Marilyn Manson as their new Clown spokes person!

  8. 8

He's OK if you like clowns, but as far as that goes, JACK rules!

  9. 9

He always creeped the hell out of me as a kid…

  10. 10

Perhaps parents should stop blaming the corporations and start taking responsibility for their own children . . . get them off the sofa/video games/computers and make them go outside and play like us "older folk" and they won't get fat!

  11. 11

Omg what are they food nazi's? It's the parents who should be teaching their kids how to eat healthy. If people want to eat McDonalds and all kinds of fatty foods they should be able too (Just don't give it to the children)

Time for the parents to step up to the plate and take responsibility for what they are letting their kids eat. Ronald McDonald isn't the one buying it for them. If they get rid of him for causing their children to be fat then they need to also get rid of every ad for every fast food out there.

  13. 13

Here's the thing. It says that parents also want him to retire. Well isn't a parent's responsiblity to monitor what their children eat?
Granted I don't like clowns, but come on, Ronald has been around forever, you can't just "retire" him! Keep the clown.

  14. 14

Who is next on the hit list? Stay Puff marshmallow guy? Mr. Peanut?

  15. 15

This is ridiculous. Last time I checked kids didn't get to McDonald's on their own someone has to take them there. What's next getting rid of the ham-burglar because he promotes theft? Ronald doesn't add to obesity, negligent parents do. Do these people really have nothing better to do?

  16. 16

    He's creepy!

  17. 17

Get yourself a red wig and a yellow clown outfit & you'll have an in with the kiddies you pedo-perv.

  18. 18

He better not go anywhere!!! He's creepy as hell but I do like that crazy b astard!

  19. 19

Ronald should definitely stick around, as I'm positive that he will. McDonalds offers healthy meal choices, and reasonable portion sizes for items like french fries and kids meals. I am on a diet, and am able to enjoy the salads, fries, hasbrowns, and yogurt & fruit parfaits..because of how healthy they are in comparison to all of the other fast food resturaunts. Just take a look at McDonalds nutritional information, it speaks for itself! Children cannot drive to McDonalds or purchase the food without the assistance from their parents, so it it us up to the parents to take control of their childs eating habits! McDonalds should be a treat, no more than once a week. Unfortunately parents are too lazy to prepare healthy meals, and are addicted to McDonalds themseleves. Not Ronalds fault ;)

  20. 20

He was always kind of creepy

  21. 21

Don't blame the clown for your inability to make sure your children eat properly. It's always someone else's fault…never their own.

  22. 22

Stupid f'ing people. As if Ronald is the one shoving a million calories down their kids throats seven days a week. It's mom and dad clocking in at 350 large and filling their toddlers baby bottles with coke who've got the nation in this mess!

  23. 23

Re: mlle.eve – that is EXACTLY what I wanted to say-lol.

  24. 24

Re: Jupiter*Girl – You're on a terrible diet if you still frequent fast food restaurants. Go to the grocery store and make a salad yourself, you lazy cow.

  25. 25

It's funny because you used the word "professional" when regarding the parents who are included in the brigade.

  26. 26

Stop feeding your children McDonalds period! That crap is pure garbage and it's the reason your kids don't know what fruits and veggies look like. And it's the parent's fault for feeding them that shit. Parents who feed their kids fast food suck.

  27. 27

Re: mlle.eve – Geeze, mlle.eve. The problem is McDonald's uses Ronald to get around "gatekeeprs" — what executives use to describe parents who try to make healthy choices for their kids. The guy is a deep-fried Joe Camel for the 21st century. He's everywhere, especially in places that parents can't monitor, and he's the best at making children desire what they're told they can't have. Give parents a break — they're up against a multi-billion dollar company!

  28. 28

keep the creepy clown away from the kids!

  29. 29

It is not corporations responsibility to make kids eat healthy, that falls to the parents, just like what kids watch on tv. Stop doing whatever it is you're doing and parent your children, make better choices. If you have to work, choose people you trust to watch your kids and follow through with your wishes.

  30. 30

I think some parents should stop putting the blame on everyone else for their child being fat… Thats what I think.

  31. 31

Great idea, Corporate Accountability International! Ronald is a marketing strategy through and through. Childhood obesity is now at epidemic proportions and the lives of hundreds of thousands of children are being detrimentally effected. Obese children suffer all their life especially as they get older. Why would we wish this on anybody?? Don't we want people to have happier lives??? Retiring Ronald is just one small step–but it is a positive step.

  32. 32

This sounds like a bunch of bored (and probably rich) stay at home moms. Get a hobby. Seriously.

  33. 33

How is it this clown's fault? I hate when parents blame their out of control kids on coporate, television, movies, music and video games and not take responsibility. I grew up with many negatives things around me, I am a healthy proper lady, because my mom has raised me well. I say instead of holding a party as such, they all need to spend some time in parenting classes.

  34. 34

I hope he doesn't go he's an Icon at Mickey D's .. He is freaking looking.

  35. 35

Thats like trying to take down Barbie, its just not happening!

  36. 36

Re: crankthatup – Ha! Seriously? You think that McDonald's is the reason kids don't know what vegetables look like? Always someone else's fault, huh? Parents decide what their children eat. They cannot continue to foist their responsibilities on to anyone or anything else. We see right through you "it's not my fault" types.

  37. 37

It's not the CLOWN that causes childhood obesity… It's the parents who buy the fried foods, etc…instead of the more heart-healthy options they have available now… Leave the clown alone and have a "reitrement party" for the parents!!

  38. 38

it's not Ronald McDonald's fault your kiddies are fat ya clowns!!

  39. 39

This is ridiculous. It's called personal responsibility. Having a happy once a week as a treat isn't going to kill you, or make you fat. It's people bringing their kids there everyday and then in addition to that eating crap at home.

  40. 40

NO! Keep the clown! This is so ridiculous, this is like when they wanted the Cookie Monster to eat fruits. Parents, YOU are responsible for your kids, NOT tv! Ronald McDonald is iconic.

  41. 41

Kudos to Corporate Accountability International for taking on this necessary campaign. I agree it is time to retire the clown and other marketing icons that are hooking our children on products from cradle to grave.

The big problem is McDonald’s uses Ronald to get around “gatekeepers,” the terms executives use to describe parents intent on making healthy choices for their kids. He’s a deep-fried Joe Camel for the 21st Century. He’s everywhere parents can’t constantly monitor and he’s effective at making children desire what they’re told they can’t have.

No matter which way you spin it Ronald is the chief promoter of a brand that has hooked kids on unhealthy food, spurring an epidemic of diet-related diseases like diabetes.

  42. 42

Yeah, because it couldn't be a parenting issue………..

  43. 43

Clown! Scary! Couldn't the replace him with the hamburgler? That would be a step up.

  44. 44

They just need to retire Ronald and get some new clowns. I would suggest Insane Clown Posse

  45. 45

Good, it's about time, and btw those burgers have glucose and fructose so you'll be addicted to them .YUCK! No wonder America is fat.

  46. 46

Go sit in a McDonald's for a while and watch parents bring their 5 year old kids in and let them order whatever they want and let them wash it down with a large sugary soft drink. If you check it out you'll notice Ronald is nowhere in sight. You can stay at home and have much healthier food choices but you can go to McDonalds with your kiddies and teach them to think about what they order. Start with water for a drink.

  47. 47

Oh yeah and I forgot to say that Ronald McDonald House is an absolutely awesome charity. If you've ever known anyone who had a sick child in a hospital far from home and they were able to stay in a Ronald McDonald House you'd understand.

  48. B2R says – reply to this

    48

Another example of people wanting decisions made for them. Why don't you parents get off your fat asses and tell your kids no once in a while, orr is it the parents are too lazy to fix the kids a healthy meal? The clown isn't the problem, it's the parents. I know, why don't you just have the government, or parents groups tell you exactly what you can and can't eat, when, how often etc. Then you won't have to do anything.

  49. 49

Whatever haha, Whenever I take my kids to Mcdonalds it's like the biggest freakin deal ever. Because it is a TREAT, the way junk food is SUPPOSED to be. If most parents now would stop overindulging their children and turning them into obese little sugar addicted freaks, we wouldn't have to worry about stupid things like this happening. As the parents, we hold the control. But there is always someone who can't handle taking the blame for their own doing, so they try to ruin the fun for everyone else.

  50. 50

    what do I think?
I think that children are not the one's dishing out $3.99 for the fucking "Crappy Meals" It's the lazy ass parents who are too self-absorbed, or too stupid to put a decent meal on the table…
Furthermore, Ronald McDonald is really not that prominent in their advertising anymore…they have taken to using atheletes and celebrities to hawk their garbage…
here's a better idea, try PARENTING your kids you useless fucktards…they don't know how to take care of themselves- that is YOUR job, not the media's, or restaurant chains, or a tired-ass clown…

  51. 51

This is ridiculous. Parents should take responsibility for what thier children are eating. You and your children shouldn't even be eating enough McDonalds to get fat off of it anyway. When I was a kid, fast food was something we got as a treat for a good report card, it wasn't an everyday thing. These parents should stop blameshifting, and cook thier children some proper nutritious food.

  52. 52

This is a joke. The problem with kids being obese is the PARENT'S fault. Maybe if they didn't give in every time their little puke cried for fast food, they wouldn't be fat! How about introducing fruits and vegetables from when they are young and ensuring that they are exercising on a regular basis. It is always easy to point the finger instead of looking straight into the mirror!

  53. 53

Re: Terps1985 – When my Mama said I wasnt getting McDonalds … I wasn't getting McDonalds. And all fussing fighting and crying would do is give me a headache, and get me put in the time-out corner for ten minutes. The parents make the rules, million dollar corporation or not. They are responsable for the health of thier children and they should never blame some corporation for thier ineptitude.

  54. 54

    Clowns are hawt.

  55. 55

It's not McDonald's fault you aren't feeding your child well. No one is FORCING you to go there.

  56. 56

how is Ronald McDonald promoting obesity? the burgers and toys promote obesity not a clown.

  57. 57

"These folks are a part of the Corporate Accountability International group and they are seeking the spokes-clown to step down in an effort to stop his influence on children and childhood obesity."

Yes, because it's the CLOWN'S fault your kid is morbidly obese. Try parenting; teaching limits and getting your kid off the couch.

  58. 58

Raise your hand if: Ronald McDonald put a gun to you/your child's head and told you to eat his greasy burgers or get blown away. That's what I thought.

  59. 59

    Re: RonaldMcDonald House Charity.

Someone needs to audit them. Here in NYC they charge these cancer stricken people to stay there, then give the appearance of 'charity'. Hmmmmmmmm?

  60. 60

oooo hells no Ronald McDonald's stays!! he is American brand icon leave the clown alone parents need to take accountability for what their kids eat…

  61. 61

well crap, even tho hes creepy its fun anyways. If they take him away tho, they should bring back the Moon guy! Remember him?

  62. 62

parents complain about stupid crap so they dont have to blame themselves for bad parenting…. keep ronald mcdonald, he's an icon, mcdonalds isn't mcdonalds without ronald :D these parents need to get a reality check and stop blaming video games, fast food, tv and music for their shitty parent skills….because media doesn't parent your children people, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO, beee responsible…. or is that too hard?

    63

Food police are getting very annoying. No harm in eating fast food now and then as long as you eat healthy otherwise. Even the best doctors are ok with that.

  64. 64

I have always found him creeeeepy!!!

  65. 65

I think pennywise is less creepier than ronald! really!

  66. 66

Some people need to get a life.

  67. gnuts says – reply to this

    67

more excuses by a generation of kids turned parents who reluctently were thrown into parenthood. these losers are like everyone is saying deadbeat and or just plain bad parents who probably have very difficult spoiled kids. when i wanted mcdee's and my mom though it was too much junk food she did something amazing ……..she said no. these people should not be allowed to have children if they can't be parents.

  68. gnuts says – reply to this

    68

we are turning into a culture with no joy in life. we are eliminating are freedoms because they are unhealthy. (this coming from a bunch of politicians who snort, pop and drink themselves silly.) let us choose to be fat or not. its like when gore tried and get music banned because it had cuss words instead of having parents not let their kids buy or listen to it. a small group imposes there opinion onto others

  69. 69

I think you should go to mcdonald's website and go to the nutrition facts section. Then, check how much sodium, calories and fat there is in a SMALL fry and hamburger. HINT: There is more fat, sodium and calories in a Happy Meal (AIMED AT KIDS!!) than they should be eating in a WHOLE ENTIRE DAY! On top of it, there is NO GOOD NUTRITION! McDonald's needs to be at least partially responsible for all the fatties in your country.

  70. 70

So, would you let Joe Camel peddle products to your kids if he became the face of a charity? RMHC does a lot of good, but it is funded by McDonald's selling of products that are bad for our health, the environment, workers, farmers, and animals. Parents do have a responsibility to govern what their children eat, but McDonald's should have the decency to be transparent about its motives and stop whitewashing their underhanded techniques by harping about their charity work. Sorry, apple slices slathered in caramel are not healthy subsitutes - simply the lesser of two evils.

  71. 71

It's not like HE'S telling kids to have cheeseburgers and fries at every meal. Parents need to take responsibility for their kids; teach your kids healthy eating habits and stop using friendly cartoon characters such as the Cookie Monster and Ronald McDonald as scape goats!

  72. 72

it's not ronald's fault that kids are eating McDonald's… the blame should be put on the parents who don't teach their kids proper dietary and nutritional lessons

  73. 73

I fuckin hate Ronald MacDonald he's horrendous.

  74. 74

How about this…. PARENTS ACTUALLY STAYING HOME A MAKING DINNER. Imagine what it would be like to live like our ancestors, Moms popping open a can of biscuits, dads got some hamburgers on the grill, little suzy is setting the table and mikey is getting the beverages. Wow if only we could get parents to do that again… imagine not having to work 2 jobs to support your bad eating habits.

  75. 75

i guess you can blame mcdonalds and a clown for being fat if your someone who is easily swayed into buying products by television commercials. you have a responsibility to yourself and your children to make the right choices for your health. it only figures that these people would put the blame elsewhere, rather than on themselves.

  76. 76

I don't think the fucking clown matters. It's McDonald's that should change. They should stop making their food so unhealthy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they should just serve salads but would it kill them to make it a little healthier? One burger there is equal to the amount of salt you're supposed to consume in a day.
