Steven Spielberg Sounds A Little Bit… Crazy!

We don't know…this sounds a little too crazy!

Former Variety writer Nicole LaPorte is releasing a book about Steven Spielberg called The Man Who Would Be King, and in it, she claims the director has major issues with secrecy and paranoia - so much so that he has a motorcycle parked outside his office in case he needs to escape!

WTF??

LaPorte writes:

"His passion for secrecy sometimes suggests a burgeoning near-paranoia."

Some other claims include:

"In Spielberg's office, hanging above his desk, a plexiglass half-moon keeps sound from reverberating so that his phone conversations remain ultra-confidential. When an assistant once asked what the funny thing over Spielberg's desk was, a security guard referred to it as a 'dome of silence.' "

"When . . . Spielberg's longtime editor views footage in the screening room, a black cloth is draped over the projection booth window to hide the screen."

"Every document that leaves the office — a script, development report, even a memo — is coded, so that should it somehow get into the wrong hands . . . the person responsible for the breach can be identified."

"When Spielberg isn't at [his office], live-cam images are streamed to his home. There are also measures to protect against earthquakes or attacks, as Spielberg believes in being prepared . . . At one point, employees were given survival kits including gas masks and other amenities."

Ca-raaaaazy.

A rep for the director claims:

"This description is so far from the real world of Steven that it doesn't deserve a comment. If the rest of the book is like this excerpt, readers can expect very little of what they read to be true."

What do U think?? Is this all bull or Spielberg a nutso??

and now we know what happened to Tom Cruise…

  2. 2

If you remember back about a decade ago, he had a stalker who had an elaborate plot to kidnap and rape him… it was a VERY strange story. This is from a news story of the time:
"Police have testified that Norman was carrying handcuffs, duct tape and a box cutter at the time of his arrest. They said his car contained two more sets of handcuffs, razor blades — items prosecutor Rhonda Saunders called a "rape kit." Authorities also found a notebook stuffed with photos of Spielberg, his wife, actress Kate Capshaw and their seven children. "

If he's paranoid, it's not without a reason.

  3. 3

i would believe this. people who have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much money tend to lose their nut and get weird and paranoid about shit. look at michael jackson.

  4. 4

SO? SS is worth zillions, and has kids. Who knows what threats he has recieved. And he is a highly regarded movie maker,I am sure he protects his latest projects. There are some scum in H'wood. Right Perez?

  5. 5

That doesn't actually sound crazy at all. Everybody wants to know what he's doing and what his moves are going to be about. He's one of the most influential directors in Hollywood. The secrecy makes sense. And preparing for earthquakes in California is pretty reasonable too. Nothing weird there. Try again.

  6. 6

Aside for the gas masks, I see nothing crazy about his actions for a man of his position and wealth.

  7. 7

HEY FAT BOY!! DON'T FUCK WITH STEVEN SPIELBERG!!

He's gotta be careful. He's in Hollywood and surrounded by snakes. You can't trust anyone in that business.

  9. 9

Smart as a whip..not crazy. All of his movies people have wanted to rip off, he's pretty clever..and of course rich enough to pull it off!

scripts are coded? not that uncommon, makes a lot of sense. Windows are covered when they view new footage? Wow, that's crazy. This guy writes a book and dupes you into hyping it? Not too weird either

  11. 11

he's autistic this could be part of it, the paranoia and routine.

  12. 12

Well, Spielberg did have a stalker that walked around with duct tape and ropes. I can see where he is coming from….

  13. 13

If it's true, NO, he's not nuts. His movies don't get leaked, do they? Don't think so- so he's doing something right. The media and scumbags dig into every nook and crany like a rodent always finds it's way into your house thru the smallest crack- so he's wise to be prudent. Cleaning up the mess After the fact takes far more energy and it takes very Little effort to use preventative measures, so why not do it, even if nothing ever comes of it! Excentrics are always Far more interesting anyway. :-) Who wants to be centric??? meh.

  14. 14

Sounds like something I would do if I had some money… Does that make me crazy? D:

  15. 15

He has Asperger's Syndrome and if you knew anything about the disorder you would understand that his paranoia is part of the anxiety that goes along with it! Don't judge him for being on the spectrum!!!

  16. 16

gas masks are useful for more than just gas. if an earthquake flattens stuff there will be ickies floating thru the air for some time- asbestos and the like from old buildings, and other assorted goodies. a gas mask will aid in breathing and is smarter than a pulling your shirt up over your mouth and nose.

  17. 17

Even if he did/does these things, so what? It doesn't sound crazy. With reporters up every celebs ass and rival studios always wanting to discover what projects are being worked on, I don't blame him for wanting secrecy. I hate when you know everything about a movie before it comes to the theater. He values his privacy, and isn't a fame whore.

  18. 18

What would you do if you were him? Think about how much he stands to lose if someone stole a script akin to "Indiana Jones" or "ET" or any of the huge films he's made. You don't become successful and stay on top by being flippant and passive. I think I'd be just as "paranoid" if I were a high-powered head of a huge production company.

I'll kind of give you the gas masks being a little much, but you're going to rag on him for earthquake kits? Any kid from LA had one growing up! Nothing wrong with being prepared.

  19. 19

Spielberg has MASSIVE EGO DISEASE that results in preachy, overblown, dull movies.

  20. 20

Well normally the greatest minds are always a little weird,Kookie. Ever notice that pretty much every genius in the world or just a really smart/artistic person is always weird? Yeah..

  21. 21

As a sci-fi writer I totally believe this. When you create these imaginary worlds or end of world scenarios you make them so real that you believe that not only is the event possible, but it may very well happen in your lifetime. Preparation is key, folks!!! Dude, if I had his money I would have a survivor colony in the Tennessee mountains that was completely self contained: solar, wind, and hydro powered, vast farm lands, livestock, deep fresh water supply, a huge electric fence surrounding the property, and plenty of weapons! I'd have a jet on call 24/7 to whisk me away to my colony in the event of invasion, virus, or nuclear war. I'm serious and I'm not crazy. I just have a super active imagination and I'm sure he does as well.

    22

how is it "crazy" to protect anything valuable in a town where everything is stolen and overheard and peeped on? Steven Spielberg isn't successful for no reason. He's a genius and I wouldn't question any of his practices.

    23

    Re: lub155 – Totally agree!

  24. 24

pulease - he TOTALLY ripped off the original Get Smart: the Nude Bomb movie with the Cone of Silence…. I think he needs to pay somebody some royalties!

  25. 25

What we don't know is how many times Spielberg has had people cross the line. Everyone knows him. It's not paranoia if it's true.

  26. 26

    Perez? What?
I wish my employer gave me a a gas mask and a survival kit in case the worst happens. I' mean c'mon it's California, earthquake zone, Cascadian Mountain volcanic threats. You know Yellowstone is slated to blow up, i mean the whole fucking park is a ticking time bomb.

I don't see how this is at all beyond the pale.

  27. 27

Hollywood success steals your soul people!

  28. 28

Well, he DOES do deals that would benefit from extreme confidentiality, and I don't see what's so weird about giving earthquake kits to your employees when you live in a city where there's earthquakes all the TIME! Keeping an eye on the office while you work at home? I don't get it. What's weird here? I don't really like the guy, but not one thing you've mentioned strikes me as odd, other than it's strange that he would give a shit about his peons well-being in a time of disaster, most moguls wouldn't care about the serfs!

    29

There's probably some truth in this and for good reason. He's keeping the lid on major high concept movies with huge budgets and doesn't want any detrimental info leaking out. Woody Allen does it. Hitchcock did it. A lot of them want to keep a tight ship. I don't blame them.

  30. 30

If you're worth over two billion dollars and have experienced stalkers in the past, you have every right to be paranoid about these kind of things!

  31. 31

a friend of mine worked for him as a PA a while back and he never mentioned anything about him being nuts … I don't know if the stuff in the excerpt is true, but with all of the script/book/info leaks in H'wood (remember what happened with the 5th Twilight book??), who can blame him if it is? I don't think it's crazy at all.

  32. 32

Despite one thing or two, all of that sounds kind of reasonable to me. In this industry there are lots of rats making bucks out of confidential information. If something important leaks, it could be worth millions in losses. It's not crazy to not put that at risk…

    33

Re: LisafromOP – Right Lisa, you and Steven have a lot in common, ROFLMAO

  34. 34

Actually, if this is true then I consider him a fucking genious!!! You can't trust anybody these days, and I applaud him for thinking ahead and protecting his ass. Kudos!

  35. 35

i don't blame him for being paranoid, he has been stalked and threatened by those wacked out Star Wars geek fans!! stay safe i say!!

  36. 36

"Doesn't Deserve Comment" is the same thing that all the publicists say when a story is true and they don't want to OFFICIALLY lie.

  37. 37

Gee Mario….36 comments and not one person agrees with you. Now, what does that make you? I know your desperate for tidbits, but please….have some common sense.

  38. 38

    Did he died?

  39. 39

Oh please…..what's wrong with him being extra careful?

  40. 40

Even if everything written here were true, there is nothing all that strange about it. He works in a business where people are constantly trying to rip off others ideas to make them selves rich. None of this is even remotely out of line in accordance with keeping industry work safe from theft. Especially for someone as famous as he is. Totally a non-story.

  41. 41

That's "Cone of Silence" from the classic TV show Get Smart! And if anyone could create a real life version, it's SS.
