Erykah Badu Defends JFK-Inspired Video
Erykah Badu showed a video for her single Window Seat and it's definitely sparked some controversy. The singer takes off her clothes along Dallas's Dealey Plaza and feigns being shot in the head. She falls to the ground exactly where JFK was assassinated.
She took to her Twitter to set the record straight.
Erykah said:
"I would never disrespect JFK. his revolutionary thinking is my inspiration. my performance art has been grossly misinterpreted by many."
Yet she gave a pretty vivid play-by-play on the shoot, which makes it sound like she was pushing the limit.
She Tweeted:
"There were children there. i prayed they wouldnt b traumatized."
"yelling, THIS IS A PUBLIC PLACE : YOU OUGHTA BE ASHAMED : PUT YOUR CLOTHES ON : DAMN GIRL! etc…"

I can't believe this is being criticized while trash like Lady Gaga's Telephone has been widely received as an endearing and revolutionary piece of art. While Gaga throws signs in there to reference popular icons in different demographics, underwriting it as a message promoting equality and freedom of expression, she ends up stereotyping tons of identity groups within that video (The minority prisoners are wild and riled up and only the empowered white girls dance, and the black girls in the yard are taken aback by the powerful Gaga and Heather, also white… The guards are brutish with deep voices and obsessed with sex)
Yet this has an outstanding message behind it, and she's not acting as a revolutionary–She DIRECTLY CREDITS HER INSPIRATION. She's not just throwing things together so people think she's intelligent or of good taste.

the reality of the situation is that the products intention was art. She does in fact have rights to freedom of speech, and many other rights that were created with this video.
However, we only attain those rights when were are responsible with them. We all have the right to bear arms, but when you haul off and shoot a bunch of people, you loose that right. We all have the right to peaceful demonstration but when you become violent, you break the law, and you loose that right. You have the freedom of speech, and in that you must maintain laws, so getting naked or " indecent exposure" you break the law. So, in that she must face her consequences, and if she is willing to face the consequences of those actions, then awesome, art it is.
